Shot with The XPX from XProHeli: http://www.xproheli.com#oid=5_1 Please enjoy these shots of majestic Giant Redwoods located in Northern California. Sequoia sempervirens is the sole living species of the genus Sequoia in the cypress family Cupressaceae. Common names include coast redwood and California redwood. It is an evergreen, long-lived, monoecious tree living 1,200–1,800 years or more. This species includes the tallest living trees on Earth, reaching up to 379 feet (115.5 m) in height (without the roots) and up to 26 feet (7.9 m) in diameter at breast height. These trees are also among the oldest living things on Earth. Before commercial logging and clearing began by the 1850s, this massive tree occurred naturally in an estimated 2,100,000 acres (8,500 km2) along much of coastal California (excluding southern California where rainfall is not sufficient) and the southwestern corner of coastal Oregon within the United States. An estimated 95% or more of the original old-growth redwood trees have been cut down due to their excellent properties for use as lumber in construction. Camera: Sony NEX-5r Lens: Sigma 19mm 2.8

Protecting the entrance to Humboldt Bay in Eureka, CA, yhe South Jetty was originally built in 1889, and updated many times since. In November 13 2016 we has a super moon which brought high tides and waves with it, though I think I missed the tide today, as the waves weren’t too big. It’s a great place to hike around, fish, and just relax. Head to head Lav action! http://www.dvcreators.net/sanken-cos-11-lavalier/ I just bought the Sanken COS-11D lav mic from DVCreator's DVStore. I tested it against the Sennheiser ME-2 lav that comes with the G2 & G3 wireless packages. I found the COS-11D to be much more sensitive and open sounding. I put both on simultaneously and used a G2 unit with the ME-2 and a G3 Unit wit the COS-11D. I adjusted the level so that they are at the same level. No processing on the audio.

This is my first informal test of the AT4053b Hypercardioid mic I just bought. In this video I am switching between the AT453b and the Rode NT3. Both mics were placed in pretty much the same place above my head. Make you own conclusions. To me the AT4053b is darker than the NT3. At first listen the NT3 sounds more open and clear, but the AT4053b is more rich and full. I think the fact that my room is treated made the AT4053b sound a bit darker in this test than it has proven to sound in the field.

Looking for a small microphone to use with your DSLR? This is just a quickie comparison of 4 mini shotguns I have handy. I did a much more in-depth shootout with some of the same mics (but not all) here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9aluFqQQ7is Hähnel MK200 - Que Audio Mini Shotgun-Pro - RØDE VideoMicPro - Sennheiser MKE400 Notes: • These 4 mics were set to the boost mode and recorded into a Sony D-50 recorder. • All recordings were level matched in post to highlight the sonic differences of the mics. This is not a comprehensive test of the mics. It's just to hear the different characters of each mic in relation to each other. • I kept referring to the Sennheiser as the "MK 400" when it's really the "MKE400". • I think I was on the edge of distorting the input of the D-50 with the Rode. Normally I would have not used the boot mode with the D-50, but it's pretty clean except when I get loud, then you hear a slight distortion. • The Hähnel MK200 is harder to find in the US, but it can be purchased here: http://www.myphotoaccessorystore.com/Hahnel_MK200_Uni-Directional_Microphone_DSLR_Video.html • Video was shot with a Sony NEX-5n using the 16mm pancake lens.

Recorded directly into my Sony PMW-EX1 camera. This is my second shootout between the Audio-Technica AT4053b and the Rode NT3. I didn't like the results of the last shootout as it was done in a treated room, so I tried it again in a different room. The more I use it, the more I like the AT4053b. I find it rich and full. BUT WAIT!!! I also threw in a shootout between the Rode NTG-2 and NTG-3 used indoors, though shotguns are designed for outdoors. I also A-B-C-D compared all 4 mics used indoors hoping to show how bad it is to use a shotgun indoors, HOWEVER I found that it wasn't that big an issue in this test.

I’ve been in Oxnard for the last 2 months dealing with my mother’s sickness and eventual passing. My buddy Ben came through town with his new DJI Inspire 1 Professional, featuring the new Zenmuse X5 gimbal/camera, which is a new micro 4/3 sensor camera similar in quality to the Panasonic GH4. We flew the new Inspire around Surfers’ Point in Ventura, CA, and it felt just like the original Inspire 1. I didn’t really notice any loss in flight time either. I didn’t have a chance to dial in the controls, as the sun was going down fast, but we got in 2 flights and combined the best shots into this video. I’d love to get one of these new Inspires myself eventually. The only thing I don’t like is the bitrate is only 60Mbps. For such a nice sensor/lens, I would hope for 100Mbps like the GH4. That would keep the image from breaking down with heavy grading. The 2nd shot (the two girls) of this video looks a little crunchy in the shadows, but that’s mostly due to the original shot being very dark. Music: “See Me Now” by The Kooks. (The lyrics reminded me of my parents who have both passed now).

Here's a look at the HS1-P headset mic from RØDE. The HS1 was connected directly to my Sony EX1 camera using the Micon-5 XLR adapter for most of the review. There is a part where I run the mic using the plug in power supplied by the Sony D-50, and connect using the Micon-2 3.5mm connector. So all the RØDE lavs can be recorded into small recorders with no XLR inputs like the Zoom H1 as long as they supply plug in power. Original music by Chad Johnson Just comparing the 2 modes using my Hero3 for Wide, and my Hero3+ for SuperView. You'll also notice that the color is a lot better on the Hero3+ More Info on the Hero3+: http://abekislevitz.com/whats-new-with-hero3plus/ So the GoPro sensor is a full 4:3 (almost square) aspect ratio, yet most video modes like 1080P are 16:9 (widescreen). This means you're cutting off important visual data on the top and bottom of your video that could actually be captured! In the GoPro we have 4:3 modes that take care of this in the form of 1440P and 960P, but if you're not a computer person, getting those to playback at 16:9 can be pretty confusing. Superview automatically captures a 4:3 aspect ratio (so full height, sky and feet) and dynamically stretches it to fit a 16:9 aspect ratio. It doesn't just stretch it down, everything would look fat, but pinches the center so anything in the center of the frame looks good, while it stretches out the outsides. Superview has the potential for great results as well as some pretty funky looking video. Basically anything POV without a ton of important visual items in the edges of the frame will look good -- examples are motocross from the head, downhill mountain biking from the head or chest, skiing on the head or chest, surfing from the nose of the board, etc. Anything where you start interacting with people or holding it in your hand will end up with some stretchy looking figures. Bottom line for this mode is the more view you have in any of your sports the more immersive and smooth your video will be -- try it out and see how you like it.

Here's a look at my Ibanez AS7312! It's a nice little 12-string electric that goes for 500.00. It's not perfect, but with a little work you can get it playing like a much more expensive guitar. I think it needs a new bridge with 12 saddles as apposed to the 6 saddles it has now. You can't get the intonation perfect unless you have a saddle for every string. Mine also has a nut that has the strings fairly high, causing some intonation issues, but others that have this guitar don't have this issue, so you can always return your guitar if it isn't right. Overall, I like the guitar, and feel it will be great for those times I want some 12 string jangle. Get the BlurFix Air at: http://www.snakeriverprototyping.com I’ve been using Snake River Prototyping’s GoPro Filters for the last couple of years, and I love them. Now I love them even more because they just came out with the smallest and lightest high quality filters available for the GoPro to date. The BlurFix Air is for use with the naked GoPro, and is so light that you can use it with most GoPro gimbals (used in aerial videography), such as the DJI H3-3D or any number of other gimbals available. The filters are so light they don’t affect the operation of the gimbals! The BlurFix Air comes with a few different types of filters: ND, Circular Polarized, and a combination ND / and Circular Polarized. Which filter you use depends on the situation. One benefit of using ND filters is that they reduce jello by slowing the GoPro’s shutter speed. For cloudy or overcast the ND4 would suffice. For bright days the ND8 is better. The CP and combo ND/CP help saturate the color and are great for cutting glare on water, glass or even leaves. Another benefit of using these filters is that they reduce what I call “prop flutter”, which is caused by the shadow of the prop hitting the camera lens. Depending on how your GoPro is mounted on your gimbal, you may want a shorter adapter that allows you to mount the gimbal outside of some fasteners that go around the camera lens. If you need a shorter adapter, you can just cut the inner lip, or sand it down. Also included is a gasket for extra secure mounting.

I check out the XP2 quadcopter I used to shoot this footage: http://www.xproheli.com#oid=5_1 I was shooting some aerial for Japanese TV at Trees of Mystery near Klamath California, and got lots of amazing shots. I am not authorized to publish most if it, but the director allowed me to post my last flight of the day. This was shot using an XP2 quadcopter, with an XPG gimbal from XProHeli. Footage shot with a GoPro Hero3, in normal mode, with the wide field of view. I was flying around the Cathedral tree, but only got one actual shot of that. The XPG gimbal really made the shots stable, and being able to aim it down really made for some interesting perspectives. The Cathedral Tree: A group of nine trees growing together as one - making this the worlds largest "cathedral" tree! Approximately 800 to 1000 years ago a very large tree stood in the middle of this formation. When it fell it didn't die. The roots and burls of the stump sprouted and these nine trees happened to grow together in a circle around the original mother tree's stump, which has long since rotted away. This tree is the site of Easter services each year and also many, many weddings.

So I finally got my AS7312 worked on to make the intonation perfect. The guitar is decent for a 500.00 guitar, but I found the nut to be too high, causing the G strings to go sharp when I pressed down on the 2nd fret. I just bought this sweet MIDI pickup that converts your guitar into a MIDI controller! I've been looking at MIDI guitars and pickups for years but they were too expensive, so I was really happy to find the Fishman TriplePlay while flipping through the Sweetwater catalog I read every night before bed. The price is right and it's the fastest tracking guitar-to-MIDI solution I've ever heard. Check it out, as there's too much to write about here. http://www.sweetwater.com/store/detail/TriplePlayPU The song is a Chad Johnson original named "Givin' Love". Lyrics/Chords below. For more info, or to order go to their web site: http://macdrones.com/ • If you're serious about jello-free aerial video check out the XP2 Quadcopter I use in my latest videos: http://www.xproheli.com#oid=5_1 Original music by me! The Macgyver RC Mod allows you to fly your AR Drone by RC transmitter, rather than your iPhone. You have much more control and it's so much fun! There are 2 types of mod to choose from. One allows for switching on/off LED lights if you have them, and one mod doesn't. For more info, or to order go to their web site: http://macdrones.com/ Shot with a GoPro camera strapped to my head.

• Check out the XP2 Quadcopter used to make this video: http://www.xproheli.com#oid=5_1 Just got my XP2 put together and took her out for a flight. It was a bit too breezy for my taste. I did not use any smoothing processes on the video so I could see how shaky I was flying....and it was pretty shaky. One minor crash. With no stable mode on the Quadrino board I have to control everything all the time.

I got a test unit of the new Snake River Prototyping filter for the DJI Inspire 1. It’s an ND8/CP which is a combination of an ND filter and a circular polarized that will cut glare on leaves and water, remove jello (caused by high shutter speeds) and enhance the color. The stock ND filter that comes with the Inspire is entirely too light to allow users to set the camera at the proper shutter speed, which should be double the frame rate. So for 30fps the shutter should be 60, and so on. These filters are not cheap colored glass like the DJI filter, or other knock off brands like Polar Pro. These are real filters for camera operators that are serious about their image. The filters have been tested heavily, and do not affect the gimbal operation. They just work. I don’t have a price yet, but they are going to cost more in the neighborhood of what real filters cost. I’ve used SRP filters on my GoPros for years, and I’m excited they are making filters for the Inspire. Philip Bloom and Mitch Bergsma use SRP filters.

So I got myself this thing called a "PinMic" from RØDE Microphones. It's a kind of lavalier that is less visible than your typical lavalier because the cables go behind your clothes, and the capsule just sits on your shirt or jacket looking like a button or something. I thought they sounded pretty good, so on a lark I decided to record a whole song using only the RØDE PinMic (for most tracks), the Lavalier (on lead guitar and kick drum) and their Hs1 headset mic (on backing vocals). It was an exercise to show that used the right way, you can get a great recording without using the traditional high priced studio mics that are the norm. Not that I would really choose a PinMic to use in the studio, but it does show that it's a pretty decent mic. I think it's hecka tight.

Original tune "Jag Jam" by Chad Johnson. This is a cool time-lapse I did using a GoPro camera taped to my rear view mirror. I couldn't use the case to mount the camera because the trip was so long I needed to plug power from my cigarette lighter into the camera.
