According to the Center for Creative Leadership’s World Leadership Survey, organizations are looking for leaders who are collaborative, inclusive and team-oriented. Helping your team deal with conflict, develop cohesion and work together will quickly set you apart to team leaders and managers. 2. Lead from where you are. A leader isn’t always identified by a title. One of the most difficult things to do—but something that will get you noticed—is leading while not formally in charge. Improving communications and taking on difficult tasks gets you noticed by team leaders and managers. When it’s time for managers to move on to other opportunities, they will likely think of you first as the right one to move into their position. 3. Be an expert, but learn and master new skills. Performing well in your current role is an excellent way to get noticed. After that, look around and identify what additional skills and jobs you can master. Stay on top of changes in your career field. Senior managers will notice people who have already demonstrated a willingness and aptitude to perform at a higher level, and who are eager to learn. 4. Be open to feedback and criticism, and use it to grow. Ask your supervisor for corrective feedback. It might be difficult, but it demonstrates you are not only comfortable with your abilities, but that you take your career growth seriously and are willing to learn from mistakes. When you are criticized or you make a mistake, own it. Ask your manager to describe what the right approach would have been, so you have a clear expectation of what they would have done. 5. Demonstrate a firm understanding of client needs. Up-and-coming leaders set themselves apart by looking for ways to improve products and streamline processes. Use every opportunity to communicate with customers to find out their wants and needs. Identifying ways to save money, while improving client experience, gets you noticed by senior managers because it also benefits their own careers. 6. Learn to communicate well. Future leaders learn to speak and write well. They convey a clear understanding of what needs to be done and why. Speak truthfully and accurately—rather than emotionally—about challenges facing a task or project, and then give positive recommendations about how to overcome them. 7. Take actions and make recommendations for the good of the organization, not you. Senior managers want employees who are fearlessly loyal to them and their team. When making recommendations that conflict with what’s going on, articulate in a positive way how it will be advantageous for the organization and the client. They speak up and share with others, even if the subject matter isn’t one to agree with. They have the ability to let you know, “I admire your opinion. Let’s agree to disagree.” And they will say this in a non-condescending manner that doesn’t feel intrusive. It’s just a matter of choosing your language and your tone. The likable person knows that words have power, and they will utilize language in the most common fashion without ever feeling attacked. 5. THEY DO NOT JUDGE OR CRITICIZE. These folks like everyone. And, if they don’t understand something, they will accept it as is, but never judge or criticize you for what you are doing. One of the main issues in long-term relationships is when both partners stop making an effort to talk to each other. Instead of having interesting, thought-provoking conversations, all of the conversations start with “How are you? ” or “How was work? ”. While it is okay for some conversations to start like this, a happy couple will also talk about other things such as their interests or hobbies. Small talk about boring subjects won’t bring you and your partner closer together. They feel that they are entitled to this, but in reality, this is unreasonable. Boasting about such things can quickly lead to arrogance. If you feel the need to, perhaps you should evaluate why it is that you’re really doing these things — is out of altruism, or the desire to be praised? 5. Never reveal the secrets of your lifestyle. It’s not worth bragging about how you’ve gone on a diet, or overcome your habit of sleeping too much in the morning, or stopped indulging your appetite for sex. If you’ve given up on worldly pleasures for the sake of spiritual goals, then it makes no sense to talk about this — your emotional condition needs to be harmonious, and such a desire to impress others and receive praise is a sign that it is not. 4. Another thing it is always worth keeping silent about are those moments when you’ve shown courage or heroism. We all come up against various challenges every day — both in the external world and on the inside, in our own minds. Your achievements in dealing with both, should they become known, will be rewarded appropriately. It’s not for you to decide whether they are worthy of recognition — therein lies the lesson. 3. Never share your thoughts on what you consider to be your enlightened knowledge of the universe and on questions of life and death. It’s only your interpretation, rather than objective truth, and the chances are you will only seem condescending to others when you try to convince them that they’re mistaken. Only in very rare cases will someone benefit from your thoughts on this subject. 2. It’s never worth revealing any conflicts or problems in your family life to others. Always bear in mind: the less you divulge such secrets about your family to others, the stronger it will be. Such things can only ever be resolved within the privacy of your own home, between loved ones. The more you complain to others about them the harder they will be to overcome. 1. Here are my favorite simple ways to keep your brain sharp and vibrant. 1. Practice meditation to decrease stress. Studies shows that chronic stress can damage the brain. So you can help protect and strengthen your brain by engaging in activities or lifestyle habits that decrease the firing of your stress response. One of the best ways to do this is through developing a meditation practice, even if it's just 10 to 20 minutes a day. You can practice breath-focused exercises, mindfulness meditation, yoga, Tai Chi, or engage in a spiritual practice or ritual, like prayer. 2. Take up cognitive training exercises. The mind stays sharp when the plasticity of the brain is maintained. Brain plasticity refers to the brain’s ability to constantly change over the course of a person’s lifetime. And this plasticity can be maintained — and better yet, improved — by engaging in cognitive training exercises, which challenge your intellectual capacity. 3. Exercise your body — for your brain. Research shows that physical exercise enhances cognitive function. One reason might be because it increases levels of brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) , a protein that improves learning, memory and higher thinking by stimulating growth of new neurons and helping existing neurons stay alive. 4. Practice deep listening. Any time you're engaged in activities that require communication, your neurons need to fire and synapses need to function. Injury to the brain and even too much stress can challenge this communication highway and make speaking, listening, understanding cues and integrating information more difficult. 5. Ditch the sugar. A diet high in sugar can be harmful to the brain, inducing inflammation, oxidative stress and poor insulin regulation. Your goal, therefore, is to follow a diet that helps you improve insulin sensitivity and reduce inflammation. This means eating fish, some meat, a lot of vegetables, some nuts and seeds, some fruit and very little grains. 6. Nourish your brain with antioxidants. Your brain benefits not only from a low sugar intake, but also from getting more antioxidants, which can help improve your memory, learning and overall cognitive performance. Antioxidant-rich foods include berries (especially blueberries) , fruits and vegetables like carrots, spinach and red grapes, and drinks like green tea, red wine, and coffee, as well as dark chocolate (in moderation, of course) . 7. Sleep on it. We've all had that moment when we're sleep-deprived and can't remember where we put the keys or what we went into the kitchen to get. You can't fully operate when you're sleep-deprived — and this includes your cognitive skills, memory and ability to think clearly or communicate. If you don't feel well-rested, see if you need more hours of sleep or if it's a question of improving the quality of sleep. Consider getting a Fitbit or other gadget that monitors how restfully you're sleeping, or have a sleep study done by your doctor. If you're lucky and you haven't been teased yet, you're likely to experience this annoying and degrading form of bullying someday. If there is someone teasing you and you have no idea what to do, there are ways to reduce it by controlling your reaction. 1. Change your perspective. Others can often perceive someone’s potential reaction to teasing by the way they act under pressure. If your perspective on teasing is the same as theirs—that it makes you get angry—then making fun of your quirks is what a bully is likely to do. But if your perspective is indifferent towards teasing, you may find that bullies don’t think you’re much fun— and they’ll leave you alone. 2. Answer teasing with a one-liner. Instead of engaging with the bully and teasing them back, wait until they are done taunting you throw and a one-liner at them before walking away. After saying your line, shrug, turn and walk calmly away. This displays that you aren’t easily ruffled, making you a boring target. You can try one-liners like these: “Thanks for telling me that.” “Oh, I thought I was cool.” “So what’s your point?” 3. Make your voice strong. Using a confident tone of voice displays your refusal to back down to the teasing. Don’t sound like you are going to cry; don’t sound like you are angry or upset; and don’t whine. Instead—even if you’re shy—raise your voice so that they can hear you and make your tone even and strong. A shaky voice is also an indicator that the teasing has worked to upset you. 4. React in a cool manner. Bullying often gets worse when you get angry in response, so it is a good idea to respond in a calm, cool way. Instead of bursting into tears or yelling out an angry response, try to react as little as possible. Doing so will show the bully that you are not afraid of him or what he is saying to you. 5. Let them tease you. Do an experiment. For one week, take your new attitude with you wherever you have been getting teased ( or keep the new attitude available if you aren’t teased on a regular basis) . Allow the people to tease you without reacting at all, as much as they want. If after a week they haven’t moved on to teasing someone else, you don’t have to use this strategy anymore. 6. Act like you can’t hear. One strategy to deal with teasing is to pretend like you can’t hear what they are saying in order to transform it into a joke. If they get in your face and try to force you to respond, just hold your hand to your ear and shake your head. This can turn into a funny situation, especially if you move your mouth without making a sound and perhaps pantomime being in a box or behind a wall. 7. Understand that it’s a game. Although every bully or teaser has a different reason for why they pick on someone, the reason they all choose to tease is because they see it as a game. When you react, they win the game; when you don’t react, you win. Losing isn’t very fun, which is why minimizing your reaction usually makes a bully move on. 8. Acknowledge that it’s fun to them. You have to understand that bullies tease because it is fun for them. It is an entertainment they engage in to make themselves feel good and forget negative feelings. Know that when a person is jealous of you, it has nothing to do with you and everything to do with them. Be confident in yourself. Don’t allow a jealous person to affect your confidence or to create self-doubt. Address haters in your daily life head on. When ignoring someone is not an option, approaching the situation directly may help release the jealous tension. Have a conversation to confront them about their behavior. Set boundaries. Don’t feel like you have to continue to listen to a jealous person vent to you all the time. Set boundaries to distance yourself from the person. Make a mental time limit for how long you will engage with a negative person, then politely excuse yourself from the conversation. Let the person know that you don't appreciate the negativity. While you don't want to be rude and upset the person further, making them aware of how they are making you feel may cause them to change their behavior. Connect with them about your personal struggles. Some people feel like they are the only ones who have negative experiences. Opening up about your own personal pitfalls may help them realize they are not alone and improve your relationship. Help the person improve themselves. Jealousy can come from feeling inferior. Offering to tutor or coach a jealous person to improve their skills in the area in which they are jealous of you may help alleviate the feelings. Be supportive of the other person's efforts so you don't come across as condescending by implying that you are better than the other person. Offer alternatives. If someone is jealous because of what you have or are doing show them options as alternatives. It is not always possible to provide what everyone wants. Be creative in creating alternative options to present to people who are jealous of you. Try offering multiple possibilities to allow them to make a choice. Ask directly what is bothering the person. Politely approach someone who is acting jealous or hating on your success and asks them why. Don’t add more reasons for them to be upset by being rude, but be direct and open for best results. Change your routine so you don't cross paths with the hater. Take a different path when walking, use a bathroom in another hallway, or see if you can switch your schedule to change classes or shifts. Reduce your negative interactions with the person. If you can change your environment or social dynamics it will reduce the jealous person’s ability to influence you. Hang out with people who support you, so the hater is less likely to confront you when you're with a group. When you see the jealous person, be the first to speak with a polite greeting then move on. This is because your brain is overwhelmed with great ideas. Topics that interest you likely include science, art, philosophy, and those are rarely found in small talk. This makes you feel like you are wasting your time trapped in a suffocating, never-ending list of socially acceptable set phrases. All you really want is a like-minded individual to bounce ideas around with about the important stuff. Number 5. You think more than you speak As your brain is wired to look for all possible solutions and answers to a problem, it may take you more time than a person of average intelligence to give your opinion or draw a conclusion. Moreover, if you are not completely sure you’ve got the right answer or a brilliant idea, you won’t speak at all. Your job can easily bore you The need for your brain to be constantly challenged with new, greater ideas and projects can turn your once exciting job into ordinary and boring as you exhaust all ways to be creative with it. This can turn into a day-to-day struggle to finish your tasks. Additionally, in most cases, your boss isn’t so sympathetic to your longings and just wants the job done. number 3. You sometimes have action paralysis It is hard to be a thinker in a world full of go-getters that appreciate action more than great ideas. As you are too consumed with different ideas, you may at times be missing the action impulse. Unfortunately, people tend to mistake this trait as laziness which leaves you feeling underappreciated. Number 2. You are considered socially awkward As if those aren’t enough, your next struggle comes as a result of all the previous ones. If you are feeling uncomfortable during small talk, refrain from speaking if not sure, don’t get inspired by old and exhausted ideas, or if you feel more comfortable with ideas than execution, people tend to characterize you as socially awkward. Little do they know, this only puts more pressure on you making you feel more self-conscious about your social conduct. Number 1. It is hard for you to fall in love Finally, your quest for love is slightly more demanding than that of average people. When your liver doesn’t work 100% on removing toxins from the body, reducing calories and regular workout won’t be of much help as the body stores the unfiltered toxins in its fat cells. Ever noticed how interesting a conversation becomes when you are talking about something you believe in? You don’t stray away from your opinions for someone else. You lose track of time and you actually enjoy the company. Passionate people exhibit this trait of confidence and assurance. They know what they are talking about. If you spend more time trying to please others, you are not really tending to what you want and need. It’s okay to be selfish once in a while for your own benefit and happiness. Being so caught up in what others think of us or acting in a way that will meet (what we think are) other people’s expectations is detrimental to us because everyone is wrapped up in their own problems and insecurities. It’s much better to try to keep this in mind, as most of what we believe people are thinking are only assumptions our own minds create based on past experiences or incorrect perceptions and interpretations. Being yourself without worrying what others think will go a long way in achieving personal happiness. 2. We Are Constantly Changing Who We Are. It’s easy to think that we are the same person we were ten years ago and will be thinking and feeling the same in another ten years, but we’re not. Our past, present and future selves are all essentially independent because our mindsets change with our lives’ circumstances and experiences. Because of this, we should always be true to our present selves when making decisions. We can never predict what our future self will think and feel, and everything that happened in the past was for our past selves. The power is all in the now. 3. Stop Comparing Yourself To Others. With social media pressuring many of us to post the best moments, it can be easy to start comparing ourselves to others’ seemingly ‘perfect’ lives. In real life, we still tend to show our best side to people rather than showing vulnerability out of fear of being judged or rejected. The truth is we are all vulnerable. We all want to be accepted by others. It is a huge waste of time to believe that people are somehow better than us and have their life sorted out, while seeing us for who we really are. Comparisons and feeling inferior to other people is futile because even the most powerful people have worries, insecurities and uncertainties inside them. 4. Don’t Assume Your Advice Will Be Listened To. Ever seen a friend’s glaring problem and know what they need to do to sort it out? You give advice but it just seems to fall on deaf ears. You feel frustrated because, after all, you just want to help them. The thing is, no one ever really listens to advice unless they happen to be in the right mindset at the right time. At the end of the day, people will only change their mindsets or outlooks through their own realisations and experiences. Sometimes it may come in the form of your advice but most of the time it needs to happen for them at their own pace. Don’t feel ignored or disheartened – you did your bit, now let them work it out. 5. You Can Only Control Your Response. How you react to a problem, event or situation is much more important than the situation itself. In life, attitude is everything in how happy you become overall. You can choose to react in a way that will ricochet throughout your future thoughts, feelings and emotions or choose to acknowledge a better way. In any negative situation, this can be hard, but remembering to take yourself out of it for a few seconds and reset your mind before reacting can help you train yourself to understand the possible repercussions for others and yourself. You can have a relationship and maintain your independence; but any relationship is going require some level of compromise (starting with where to go on date-night, through to bigger things like living situations in the future) . If you’re not ready for that level of commitment, or want to maintain full independence in your decision-making, that could be why you are still single. 3. You need to figure yourself out. If you’re going through a big life change—like going to a new school, starting a new job, living in a new city, or —that could be why you are still single. It is unwise to invite a new partner into your life if you have a lot of house-cleaning to do. Take your time while settling into your new situation: love will be waiting for you when you’re ready. 4. You can’t stop thinking about the past. Holding on to nasty feelings about your former flame will stop you from moving on with life. If you have emotional baggage left over from a previous relationship, let it go before jumping into a new one. Or maybe you still feel love for a person who doesn’t return the favor. 5. You don’t know what you want. Your standards for what makes a person an “excellent” match will change as you mature. There could be times where you’re just plain confused about what you want in a partner, and that’s okay. It could help to go on a date with a few different types of people; you’ll come out with a general idea of what traits attract you to a person and be better able to choose a partner you can be happy with. If you’d like some fun-and-memorable first date ideas. 6. You aren’t comfortable in your body. A lack of confidence in yourself can reflect in how you present yourself (posture, thoughts, behaviors, everything). Be confident in your body because it’s a glorious thing capable of carrying you anywhere in the world. It can be hard to think of a life without sugar as it’s in so much that we eat. There can even be surprisingly high amounts of sugar in foods that are meant to be healthy, like fruit. But what exactly would happen to your body once you cut it out? We looked to science, and here six things you could probably expect: 1) Your skin will look better. The link between diet and acne has been long debated but the latest research suggests that it’s very much present. It isn’t just dairy that can contribute to a bad complexion. Sugary foods are a major culprit too. An overview of studies in 2013 found that high GI foods – which include fizzy drinks, pastries, cakes, and chocolate – have a direct impact on the severity of acne. This is because they absorb into the bloodstream quickly causing a fluctuation of hormones, including insulin, thought to instigate oily secretions (called sebum) that lead to spots. 2) You Look younger. Eating a lot of sugar can have an aging effect, it turns out. A study by Leiden University found that those aged between 50 and 70 who had a high level of glucose in their blood consistently looked older than people whose blood sugar level was lower. For every 180 grams of glucose per liter in participants’ blood, their age guessed by others rose by five years. ‘Normally collagen bulks out the skin and gives it a younger plump look, ’ Doctor Ross Perry, a cosmetic doctor at the Cosmedics clinic in London explained to the Mail Online. ‘If you persistently eat a high-sugar diet, then as a result, the collagen and elastin will become more rigid, so it will become easier for wrinkles to form and the skin will lose that youthful plumpness. ’ 3) You’ll sleep better. Diet, sleep, and energy is all things that are interlinked. Once sugar is cut out of your diet, it’s no wonder that you’ll notice a change to your sleep pattern. This 2016 study that examined the impact of different food groups on sleep found sugar to be one of the ones impacting our quality of slumber. Saturated fat and sugar were found to lessen time spent in deep sleep mode. 4) Your heart will be happier. Three times happier, according to research by cardiovascular scientist James J. DiNicolantonio. Looking at the impact of sugar on the risk of cardiometabolic diseases, he found that sugar may as related to high blood pressure and hypertension, as sodium. The research suggests the link could even be greater. Those who consume 25% or more calories from added sugars have an almost three-fold increased risk of cardiovascular disease than those who don’t. 5) You might be in a better mood. That self-loathing after you eat a doughnut may have more of a scientific basis than you would have thought. Studies into the impact of sugar-rich foods on the moods of post-menopausal women found that it was a risk factor in the development of depression. It is caused by the sugar being easily absorbed into the blood that can make you feel irritable and moody later on. Remember, you don’t know what’s coming next. Life is full of interesting twists and turns, but if we continually pursue things that we enjoy doing whether, for a job or hobby, it will make the journey interesting and more fun. Maybe you enjoy making jewelry right now. Maybe you can sell it. In five years, you might be a successful jewelry designer or you might have moved on to another craft. It doesn’t matter. You have the experience of your jewelry design to fall back on and help you with other projects in the future. Try to be comfortable with discomfort. Sometimes life is uncomfortable. Sometimes we don’t have enough money to do all of the things we want to do. If you have something you really want to pursue, then you must be able to live with some amount of discomfort in order to do that. Ask yourself questions. Take some time for yourself. Ask yourself big questions. And small ones. Learn about yourself. Meditate. Write down the things that interest you and things you could see yourself doing if time and money were no objects. Dream big. Quiet your mind and really imagine yourself doing those things. Answer the door. Opportunity may be knocking but if you don’t answer the door, how can you take advantage of it? You must take opportunities when they are presented to you. Sometimes it’s not the right time, but it doesn’t matter. Opportunities happen when they happen. Answer the door or that opportunity might walk on by and knock on someone else’s door. Volunteer or shadow someone. If there is a job or hobby you are interested in — from grooming dogs to being a zookeeper — volunteer or job shadow and see if it’s an occupation you really want to do. All the dreaming in the world isn’t going to help you if you don’t go and get your hands dirty. Sometimes, we think we want to do something and then once we try it, we realize it might not be the kind of work we like after all. Or it might be more involved than we realized. Skin-on-skin contact is the best. If you're married, or living with your significant other, sleeping naked gives a greater chance of skin-on-skin contact, especially when it comes to cuddling. This kind of contact can also lead to a more active sex life. All of this releases copious amounts of oxytocin, which is the neurotransmitter that helps you feel those good feelings about your significant other. 3. It can help your skin. For once your body gets to breathe. Your private parts, armpits, and feet are generally restricted all day and are often covered by multiple layers, even in the summer time. Give those parts a chance to air out and breathe. This can lower the risk of skin diseases, like athlete's foot, that result from wet, restricted skin. 4. Helps you regulate your cortisol. Cortisol is a very strange chemical in the body but it can do a lot of damage. When you sleep naked, it helps keep your body temperature at the optimal ranges so your body can better create cortisol. If you sleep overheated your cortisol levels tend to stay high, even after you wake up. This can lead to increased anxiety, cravings for bad food, weight gain, and more terrible things. Sleep naked so you can keep your body temperature down and sleep well so your body can properly produce and regulate cortisol. 5. Balances your melatonin and growth hormone. Continuing along that same vein, keeping your sleeping environment below 70 degrees every night can help your body regulate its melatonin and growth hormone levels. These chemicals help the body do things like preventing aging and are essential to good health. When you sleep in clothes, your body heats up and prevents effective use of these hormones. In other words, sleeping with clothes on makes you grow old faster. 6. It can keep your sex organs healthy. For men, the cooler sleeping conditions allow your testes to remain at a cooler temperature. This helps keep your sperm healthy and your reproductive systems functioning as normal. For women, the cooler and airier sleeping conditions can actually help prevent yeast infections. Yeast grows better in warm, moist conditions. We should feel that by holding on to a negative frame of mind, we are inevitably choosing to be unhappy; each negative is a conscious decision to be miserable. If we really value the importance of our own inner peace and happiness, we will aspire to cultivate this through good, uplifting thoughts. Ludwig Van Beethoven was in bed by 10 pm each night allowing himself to wake up and get right to work on his art. An Unnoticeable Change with a Significant Result. Creating an evening routine is about changing habits. It was a drastic change but it didn’t happen overnight. In fact, I started with one simple shift and added more over time. Often, we want to bite off more than we can chew and will never reach our goals. I knew that by changing my habits I could build an evening routine for myself that would allow me to reach my definition of success. I started with going to bed earlier, this required me to shut off electronics sooner and pick up a book. I then shifted my meals naturally and even stopped drinking caffeine at 11 am each day. This became a natural domino effect. Having an evening routine can change the structure of your day. It opens up a lot of space for you to take action instead of sitting back and letting life pass you by. Anytime I wanted to fall back on old habits, I would connect to the benefits of change and would look at the success of others and remind myself that it was their routines that gave them the space to change the world. Your evening routine doesn’t have to be complicated and extreme. Each step in the right direction gets you closer to success. Curiosity will lead you to creativity. Andrew, formerly of Google and now of Baidu, is one who doesn't believe innovation is due to unpredictable flashes of genius. Rather, he said you can become more creative and innovative systematically. "In my own life, I found that whenever I wasn't sure what to do next, I would go and learn a lot, read a lot, talk to experts. I don't know how the human brain works but it's almost magical: when you read enough or talk to enough experts, when you have enough inputs, new ideas start appearing. " 2. Do Something You Love. Stuck for ideas? Not sure what to do? Your life needs some balance to ensure your creativity doesn't suffer. In a letter to his son, Albert Einstein provided a great bit of fatherly insight when addressing his son's interest in playing the piano that is applicable to losing yourself in the creative process: do something that pleases you. "That is the way to learn the most, that when you are doing something with such enjoyment that you don't notice that the time passes, " Einstein wrote. "I am sometimes so wrapped up in my work that I forget about the noon meal." 3. Set the Right Mood. A lack of ideas or being unable to solve a problem can be extremely frustrating. Unless you value complete silence, music can be the thing to give your mood, and your creativity, a boost. Steve Jobs used music to change his moods and keep himself creative. It could work for you, too. 4. Use the Six Thinking Hats Technique. Sometimes you just need to start over. Forget everything and begin anew with a blank slate - break it down using six different colored "thinking hats". Using this process could help you look at things in a different way. It gives you the option to look at things in a "just the facts" manner (white hat) ; where things could go wrong (black hat) ; and possibilities, alternatives, and new ideas (green hat) , for example. By looking at a problem from several unique perspectives may be just what you need to find a solution. 5. Ask For Advice or Feedback. Sometimes you're too close to a problem to figure out a creative solution all by yourself. Asking for help isn't a sign of weakness. Ask for help and advice from friends, peers, and people from your personal network that you trust and respect. Every person has a unique skill set, experience, and knowledge. A fresh outside perspective, or three, or five, may be just what you need. Even if you don't use their advice, it may spark some new, creative thinking that will get you where you need to go. 6. Pick a Terrible Idea. Step away from whatever idea you're stuck on for a few minutes. What's the most useless idea you can imagine? Make a list of the worst ideas you can think up. Now the real challenge to stretch your creativity: what are the best features of these terrible ideas. Your five senses help you process the world around you, so you want them to be working at their best. Like any other skill, practice using your senses of sight, hearing, taste, touch, and smell so that you can use them to process the world around you. Using your senses, you can pick up clues to enhance your intuition just like Sherlock Holmes. 3. Examine the world around you. As we grow older, we all start to notice some changes in our ability to remember things. Maybe you've gone into the kitchen and can't remember why, or can't recall a familiar name during a conversation. You may even miss an appointment because it slipped your mind. Memory lapses can occur at any age, but we tend to get more upset by them as we get older because we fear they're a sign of dementia or loss of intellectual function. The fact is, significant memory loss in older people isn't a normal part of aging—but is due to organic disorders, brain injury, or neurological illness, with Alzheimer's being among the most feared. Thanks to decades of research, there are various strategies we can use to protect and sharpen our minds. Here are seven tricks you might try. 1. Keep learning. A higher level of education is associated with better mental functioning in old age. Experts think that advanced education may help keep memory strong by getting a person into the habit of being mentally active. Challenging your brain with mental exercise is believed to activate processes that help maintain individual brain cells and stimulate communication among them. Many people have jobs that keep them mentally active, but pursuing a hobby or learning a new skill can function the same way. Read; join a book group; play chess or bridge; write your life story; do crossword or jigsaw puzzles; take a class; pursue music or art; design a new garden layout. 2. Use all your senses The more senses you use in learning something, the more of your brain will be involved in retaining the memory. In one study, adults were shown a series of emotionally neutral images, each presented along with a smell. They were not asked to remember what they saw. Later, they were shown a set of images, this time without odors, and asked to indicate which they'd seen before. They had excellent recall for all odor-paired pictures, and especially for those associated with pleasant smells. Brain imaging indicated that the piriform cortex, the main odor-processing region of the brain, became active when people saw objects originally paired with odors, even though the smells were no longer present and the subjects hadn't tried to remember them. 3. Believe in yourself. Myths about aging can contribute to a failing memory. Middle-aged and older learners do worse on memory tasks when they're exposed to negative stereotypes about aging and memory, and better when the messages are positive about memory preservation into old age. People who believe that they are not in control of their memory function are less likely to work at maintaining or improving their memory skills and therefore are more likely to experience cognitive decline. How we approach situations and the things we do to feed our brains can significantly improve our mental horsepower. Here are 10 Small Things You Can Do Every Day to Get Smarter. 1. Be smarter about your online time. Every online break doesn't have to be about checking social networks and fulfilling your daily ration of cute animal pics. The Web is also full of great learning resources, such as online courses, intriguing TED talks, and vocabulary-building tools. Replace a few minutes of skateboarding dogs with something more mentally nourishing, suggest several responders. 2. Write down what you learn. It doesn't have to be pretty or long, but taking a few minutes each day to reflect in writing about what you learned is sure to boost your brainpower. "Write 400 words a day on things that you learned. 3. Make a 'did' list. A big part of intelligence is confidence and happiness, so boost both by pausing to list not the things you have yet to do, but rather all the things you've already accomplished. "Make an I D list to show all the things you, in fact, accomplished,". 4. Get out the Scrabble board. Board games and puzzles aren't just fun but also a great way to work out your brain. "Play games (Scrabble, bridge, chess, Go, Battleship, Connect 4, doesn't matter) , " (for a ninja-level brain boost, exercise your working memory by trying to play without looking at the board) . "Play Scrabble with no help from hints or books,". 5. Have smart friends. It can be rough on your self-esteem, but hanging out with folks who are more clever than you is one of the fastest ways to learn. "Keep a smart company. Remember your IQ is the average of five closest people you hang out with, " Saurabh Shah, an account manager at Symphony Teleca, writes. 6. Read a lot. This is not a shocker, but it was the most common response: Reading definitely seems essential. Opinions vary on what's the best brain-boosting reading material, with suggestions ranging from developing a daily newspaper habit to picking up a variety of fiction and nonfiction, but everyone seems to agree that quantity is important. Read a lot. 7. Explain it to others. "If you can't explain it simply, you don't understand it well enough," Albert Einstein said. The Quora posters agree. Make sure you've really learned what you think you have learned and that the information is truly stuck in your memory by trying to teach it to others. 8. Do random new things. Shane Parrish, the keeper of the consistently fascinating Farnam Street blog, tells the story of Steve Jobs's youthful calligraphy class in his response on Quora. After dropping out of school, the future Apple founder had a lot of time on his hands and wandered into a calligraphy course.
