Better space, better education? Japan's alternative kindergarten (Learning World: S5E41, 1/3)

03:02
The architecture of this Japanese kindergarten is striking: it has an oval shape which frames a garden, trees are growing through the roof of the building. Slides lead the way into the garden and animals are part of the establishment. There are no internal walls, so the children hear the noises from neighbouring classes, helping them hone their concentration skills. But what is the purpose of this odd architecture? Its architect, Takaharu Tezuka, has designed it to fulfill the need for doing the same thing over and over again. Through repetition, children investigate the world: the roof serves as a running track, as a place to interact with the trees growing below. It offers a room to the children where they can learn about the risks of growing up...learn more about this special kindergarten! What role do trees, plants and outdoor spaces play in a child’s cognitive development? https://youtu.be/YTL3IJ4dXQ0 Can exceptional architectural design make a difference to the way we learn? https://youtu.be/unSw_u7KEfQ Learning World is brought to you by euronews: http://www.euronews.com/learning-world SUBSCRIBE to get more videos from WISE: http://www.youtube.com/WISEQatar?sub_confirmation=1 World Innovation Summit for Education (WISE) is an international, multi-sectoral and action-oriented platform for innovation in education that connects innovators, nurtures new ideas, and recognizes and supports successful initiatives that are helping revitalize education. Solar-Powered Floating Schools in Bangladesh

03:31
The non-profit organization Shidhulai Swanirvar Sangstha introduced solar-powered floating schools in Bangladesh to ensure children's uninterrupted education even during the height of the monsoon season. In addition to 'Transforming Education', the initiative was judged to have best provided innovative financing of primary education. From the outset, the guiding principle was that if children cannot come to school, then school should come to them. The floating school is a combination of school bus and schoolhouse. The boats collect students from riverside villages, dock at a final destination and provide on-board small-group instruction. After class, the boats take students back to their homes and then go on to pick up other groups. Each boat school has a classroom for 30 students, an Internet-linked laptop, a library and electronic resources, and provides basic primary education up to grade IV. 2012 WISE Awards Winner SUBSCRIBE to get more videos from WISE: http://www.youtube.com/WISEQatar?sub_confirmation=1 World Innovation Summit for Education (WISE) is an international, multi-sectoral and action-oriented platform for innovation in education that connects innovators, nurtures new ideas, and recognizes and supports successful initiatives that are helping revitalize education. 'What if Finland's Great Teachers Taught in Your Schools?' Pasi Sahlberg - WISE 2013 Focus

16:55
Many governments are under political and economic pressure to turn their school systems around for higher rankings in the international league tables. Canada, South Korea, Singapore and Finland are commonly used models for the nations that hope to improve teaching and learning in their schools. In search of a silver bullet, reformers now turn their attention to teachers, believing that if only they could attract "the best and the brightest" into the teaching profession the quality of education would improve. This presentation argued that just having better teachers in schools will not automatically improve students' learning outcomes. Lessons from Finland and other high-performing school systems suggest that we should also protect schools from prescribed teaching, toxic accountability, and unhealthy competition, so that all teachers can use their professional knowledge and skills in the best interests of their pupils. Paul Tough: "How Children Succeed - The Hidden Power of Character" [Special Address]

19:46
Paul Tough, author of "How Children Succeed" addresses the challenge for educators to provide their students with a different set of skills, which are necessary to succeed in life. People's thinking about education has often been misguided by emphasising "intelligence" as a prerequisite to success, often measured by passing standardised tests. According to Paul Tough, this is a wrong strategy to best develop skills and abilities of children. Instead, educators should focus on training and improving their students' non-cognitive skills like creativity, persistence, curiosity, conscientiousness, self-control and optism to equip them best for life. In his special address, he reports from a number of case studies and examples how teachers can foster and nurture these essential skills in children. Innovation in India: Learning in the school without walls (Learning World: S5E30, 1/2)

Syamantak’s "University of Life" is a very special centre of learning, situated in Maharashtra, India. Its students work together on solving everyday problems by taking on a practical approach and by finding innovative solutions. Some work on marketing local food products, while others work in agriculture, eco-construction and engineering. The origin of this approach roots in the belief that members of a community should not have to migrate to other places in order to find work. Instead, children should be equipped with the wisdom and knowledge of creating self-employment in order to stay in their home villages. The students benefit from this alternative 'learning by doing' method: rather than being bound to a fixed curriculum, it gives them the space to become creative and innovative. Feel the music: Deaf children sense sounds in Switzerland (Learning World: S5E20, 3/3)

03:57
"Feel the music" is part of the Mahler Chamber Orchestra’s "Beethoven Journey" concert series. Deaf and hard of hearing children are sensing the sound of a drum or the vibrations of a cello with their whole body. They touch them, sit under the piano and conduct the musicians. This time, three schools from Zurich and around Lucerne in Switzerland are participating. A life-enhancing project for both - children and musicians: "Touching the instrument I could feel it through my hand and my arm in my whole body. But also all the other instruments have transmitted vibrations to my body" says one of the students. The idea for the workshop with deaf and hard of hearing children was born because of Beethoven, who himself turned hard of hearing in his 20s and later deaf which totally influenced his compositions. Since May 2012, there have to date been workshops in eight European countries. Around 150 children have taken part. After the experience and surrounded by the orchestra the schoolchildren are invited to draw their impressions. A deaf teacher explains how he is trying to bridge the gap between hearing people and those who are deaf or hard of hearing - watch this episode:http://youtu.be/hDnLQBpVCVs How can deaf children learn to love reading if they have never read a book in their native language? The Elbinselschule in Hamburg, Germany, uses multisensory learning methods to teach its pupils. The primary school specifically trains the teachers to use these in class and combines them with movements, for a variety of subjects. Pupils spell words while jumping or roll around the corridors to do math exercises. Hopping from pad to pad while spelling words is not just for fun. As the Christoph Boris Frank, the school's principal points out: “Movement fosters interconnections in the brain. And interconnection in the brain enhanceds the learning process and sharpens memory! Morocco: Preserving Amazigh Culture (Learning World: S4E4, 3/3)

03:08
WISE, the annual World Innovation Summit for Education, held in Doha, brings together thousands of education professionals to discuss developments and new ideas, and to award projects of outstanding merit. Medersat, working in Morocco, is a prize winner. Two hours away from Casablanca, in Laazib, a school almost looks like a mirage but it is a solid reality. It is a Medersat school where children are taught in their mother tongue Amazigh, the Berber language. Malika Taktouri, a teacher at Laazib School, said: "This school is very different from a state school. Here, all the teachers and directors listen to everyone, to what they say and they know what is happening around us. We have strong relationships with the local population. That's not the case in other schools. In other schools relationships are limited to those between teachers and pupils." Laazib was the 49th school built by Medersat, with the aim of tackling educational under-achievement among Amazigh students in rural primary schools due to language barriers. It's also the first to develop a curriculum in Amazaigh in Morocco. There are now nearly a hundred schools like this across the country and they are not only changing children's lives, they are helping adults too. Said, the village barber, never learned to read and write at school but now he has learned and displays his diploma in his shop. The foundation's aim is to build a thousand schools across the country by constructing 5 schools a year in Morocco and another one somewhere else in Africa, every year. To date, nearly 300 families and 15,000 students have benefited from the Medersat Foundation and last year, 45 Medersat students even got university degrees. Learning Through Play: "Anji Play" (Learning World S6E19, 1/2)

03:39
Playing is an integral part of childhood. Many researchers believe that during a child’s early years, playing can help develop cognitive skills, laying a strong foundation for a lifetime of learning. In our first report we go to China where traditional teaching methods and rote learning have characterised school life for a long time. But one woman has developed a completely new approach that puts play at the heart of early childhood education. “Traditionally, in Chinese education, teachers teach, and students listen. Now we’ve given the kids the right to play. They’ve free to move from indoors to outdoors,” said Cheng Xueqin, AnjiPlay founder and director of pre-school education for Anji County. In AnjiPlay, chidren from 3 to 6 choose how they play and with whom. They can to do things other pre-schools wouldn’t allow, like painting real cars. The concept, named True Play, was found by Xueqin 15 years ago. Since then, it has been extended to the 130 public kindergartens of Anji county. “Our children are happy, and I think happiness is very important for one’s life. They can also focus on a task. They need it during the games. It’s a valuable asset for their future studies.” Watch Part 2 on exploring playing as a tool for education here: https://youtu.be/bJZfD6236BQ Learning World is brought to you by euronews: http://www.euronews.com/learning-world SUBSCRIBE to get more videos from WISE: http://www.youtube.com/WISEQatar?sub_confirmation=1 World Innovation Summit for Education (WISE) is an international, multi-sectoral and action-oriented platform for innovation in education that connects innovators, nurtures new ideas, and recognizes and supports successful initiatives that are helping revitalize education. Stop Teaching Calculating, Start Learning Maths! - Conrad Wolfram

25:57
'Stop teaching calculating, start learning maths' - Conrad Wolfram on how re-conceptualized maths in education can step up to real-world needs. The importance of maths to jobs, society and thinking has exploded over the last few decades. Meanwhile, maths education fails to match-up. Why has this chasm opened up? Computers are central: when they do the calculating, people work on harder questions, try more concepts, and play with a multitude of new ideas. Conrad Wolfram explained why this fundamental shift is needed in education, and described the major project he's founded to build a dramatically new, problem-centric, computer-based maths curriculum. He asked which country could adopt a computer-based approach first, and leapfrog others in STEM. First Lady Michelle Obama on Girls' Education - WISE 2015 Special Address

24:38
US First Lady Michelle Obama gives her keynote speech on educating girls worldwide at this year's World Innovation Summit for Education Opening Ceremony. She focused on the importance of adolescent girls' education and our need to support them as equal citizens with equal potential as our adolescent boys. Gender parity in primary schools across the world has greatly improved but there is still a critical gap between the scolarisation of teenage girls and teenage boys in secondary schools and beyond. For the First Lady, investing in girls' education needs to be accompanied by dramatic changes in our attitude towards the role of women in our societies. "We cannot address our girls' education crisis until we address the cultural norms and practices that devalue women's intelligence, that silence their voices and limit their ambitions." In her inspiring keynote address, First Lady Michelle Obama encourages men and women to hold the same dreams for their daughters as they do for their sons - not just for the girls themselves but also for the development of our societies as a whole. How the Brain Learns to Read - Prof. Stanislas Dehaene

33:30
Cognitive psychology and neuroscience have begun to dissect the neuronal mechanisms of literacy using brain-imaging techniques. During reading acquisition, our brain circuitry recycles several of its pre-existing visual and auditory areas in order to reorient them to the processing of letters and phonemes. The nature of this "neuronal recycling" process helps explain many of the children's difficulties in learning to read. Our growing understanding of the child's brain has important consequences for how education should be optimally organized.
