Science Bulletins: Mapping Emotions in the Body
Feelings are often associated with physical reactions: terror can send chills down your spine, and love can leave you weak in the knees. A recent study has linked specific emotions to physical sensations. Researchers tested emotional responses in hundreds of subjects and then created maps identifying locations in the body where emotions cause physical changes. Science Bulletins is a production of the National Center for Science Literacy, Education, and Technology (NCSLET), part of the Department of Education at the American Museum of Natural History. I'm going to talk you a little bit about how to help children manage anger. So when we talk about anger management for children, again I want to specify that we're really not so much talking about anger, the feeling of anger, in terms of doing away with it. But potentially helping children to maybe become a little less angry, so it's not quite as intense. Or what's even more important is making sure that when they become angry they don't engage in behaviors that might get them into trouble at school or where they might hurt themselves or someone else. So, the first key is to help them really develop an emotional vocabulary. So we want children to learn with their parents, words for the particular experiences they're having that are related to anger. So that might be simply first asking them the kinds of things their feeling in there body, whether its muscle tension or their heart rate coming up and things like that. And getting them to begin to learn and become familiar with emotion words like anger, annoyance, rage. But also other kinds of feelings that might come up before anger like hurt or embarrassment. So that they can begin to describe and understand what changes are taking place in their bodies and know what it’s about. So the first piece is awareness. The second thing and this is critical is that we don't want children to believe that it’s wrong to feel angry and that's a message that comes across a lot in our culture. That you are not supposed to be angry especially at a family member. And unfortunately that creates a lot of problems for children. So they might experience that as invalidating. One, it might in fact intensify the emotion. But the second thing it does is it sends a message to them that they can't trust their own experiences. And that they're not necessary a good judge of understanding what’s going on around them. And that can potentially put them at risk for all kinds of other negative behaviors. So the first is we want to get them aware of their own emotional states and allow them to be able to describe and name those states. Second, we want to make sure they can validate the feeling. We then though want to make sure they understand once they sort of see what these feelings are about, they begin to notice them, that they're able to stop themselves and do one of two things. One, even very young children can be taught to do simple breathing exercises. And it might be as simple as telling them to stop and count to ten, slow their breathing down to try to bring it down. The other thing is if they're for instance on the playground and they catch themselves feeling angry that might be a good time for them to take a timeout. Step away from their friends and possibly go off by themselves and do a little breathing or to go talk to a teacher. So what we really want is to make sure they have some awareness and vocabulary of their emotions. What’s going on in their bodies, that it’s validated so that they understand that it's okay to feel angry. Three, they can do some breathing perhaps to relax and bring down the emotional intensity and perhaps learn to take a time out. And then finally we want them to be able to communicate and talk it through with adults like a teacher and then also with their parents at home and eventually even with their peers. So those are the steps, a few, that began to help children manage anger and aggression.

The price of invulnerability: Brené Brown at TEDxKC
TEDxKC talk synopsis: In our anxious world, we often protect ourselves by closing off parts of our lives that leave us feeling most vulnerable. Yet invulnerability has a price. When we knowingly or unknowingly numb ourselves to what we sense threatens us, we sacrifice an essential tool for navigating uncertain times -- joy. This talk will explore how and why fear and collective scarcity has profoundly dangerous consequences on how we live, love, parent, work and engage in relationships -- and how simple acts can restore our sense of purpose and meaning. Speaker: Dr. Brené Brown is a research professor at the University of Houston Graduate College of Social Work where she has spent the past 10 years studying courage, shame and authenticity. She is the Behavioral Health Scholar-in-Residence at the Council on Alcohol and Drugs and has written several books on her research. www.brenebrown.com/welcome http://www.TEDxKC.org/ About TEDx, x = independently organized event In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized. (Subject to certain rules and regulations.)

How Anger Effects Your Body & Brain ??? Control Your Anger by these Techniques - How to Avoid Anger?
How Anger Effects Your Body & Brain ??? Control Your Anger by these Techniques - How to Avoid Anger? https://youtu.be/wmpE4LzxRyA How Anger Effects Your Body, Control Your Anger, Avoid Anger Anger is a natural emotion. Mild forms of anger include displeasure, irritation or dislike. Anger can come as a reaction to criticism, threat, or frustration. There are times when we fly into a fury, such as when we face an outrageous situation or when we have an argument with a loved one. We may think that our anger is justified (and it probably is), and we have every right to be angry. But do you know what happens each time you get angry? Firstly, the first spark of anger activates our amygdala, Amygdala: the part of our brain that’s involved with the experiencing of emotions before you’re even aware of the anger itself. This begins a chain reaction in our brain which leads to our adrenal glands secreting stress hormones like cortisol, adrenaline, and noradrenaline. • Cortisol is released in response to stress and low blood-glucose concentration. It functions to increase blood sugar, to suppress the immune system, and to aid in the metabolism of fat, protein, and carbohydrates. • Adrenaline increases blood flow to muscles, output of the heart, pupil dilation, and blood sugar. • Noradrenaline increases arousal and alertness, and focuses attention; it also increases restlessness and anxiety. In our body, it increases heart rate and blood pressure, triggers the release of glucose from energy stores, increases blood flow to skeletal muscle, and reduces blood flow to the gastrointestinal system. In a real life dangerous situation like if we’re faced with a robber, the activation of these hormones is a good thing, because all our body’s senses and functions are now channeled to deal with the physical danger. We react quickly, we are more alert, and our heart beats faster — which will help us act fast and deal with the danger. But when stress hormones keep getting released despite no real danger, this creates a chain of negative effects on our body. Negative effects on our body 1. Elevated cortisol causes a loss of neurons in our prefrontal cortex. This keeps you from making good decisions for the future. 2. Elevated cortisol kills neurons in the hippocampus and disrupts creation of new ones. This weakens short-term memory and prevents you from forming new memories properly. 3. Too much cortisol decreases serotonin — the hormone that makes you happy. This makes you feel anger and pain more easily, as well as increase aggressive behavior and lead to depression. In our body anger effects: 1. Our Cardiovascular System: 1. Our heart rate Increase 2. Blood pressure Increase 3. Blood glucose Increase 4. When these symptoms become chronic, our blood vessels become clogged and damage. This can lead to a stroke and heart attack. 2. Our Immune System: 1. Thyroid function Decrease 2. Number of natural killer cell Decrease 3. Number of virus-infected cell Increase 4. Incidence of cancer Increase 3. Our Digestive System 1. Blood flow Decrease 2. Metabolism Decrease 3. Dry mouth Increase 4. Our other body parts: 1. Eye sight Decrease 2. Migraine Increase 3. Headache Increase 4. Bone density Decrease Reduce your intensity of anger in each conflict. Here are some simple tips: Talk things calmly. Find ways to address the issues frustrating you without anger. Be the bigger person. Cut off toxic relationships. Spend more time in nature. Divert your energy to constructive things. How Anger Effects Your Body & Brain?? Control Your Anger by these Techniques How to Avoid Anger?
