DNA Stool Test for Colon Cancer-Mayo Clinic
Research shows that screening for colorectal cancer saves lives. That's because screening can catch cancer early, while it's still curable. But let's face it, having a colonoscopy to look for cancer or precancerous polyps is not fun. Doctors at Mayo Clinic have studied and improved upon a non-invasive screening test that requires no preparation or procedure. The test detects cancer or precancerous polyps by measuring DNA in your stool.

DNA Screening for Colon Cancer
Research Report: DNA Screening for Colon Cancer. It is estimated that colon cancer will kill 50,000 people in the United States this year. But found early, that number could be lowered substantially. So why do so many still die from it? The answer and the solution can be found in a medical laboratory in Cleveland, Ohio. A team of researchers led by Sanford Markowitz, M.D., Ph.D. at the Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine has found a way to detect colon cancer quickly and non-invasively.

Colon Biopsy
This 3D medical animation shows the removal of a sample of tissue (biopsy) from the colon. A biopsy is usually performed to determine if the cells from a sample of body tissue are abnormal. A major reason to obtain a biopsy is to rule out cancer. Sometimes biopsies are obtained to determine the cause of an unexplained infection, inflammation, swelling, or growth. Item #ANS00189

Mayo Clinic Study Suggests Improved DNA Stool Test Could Detect Digestive Cancers in Multiple Organs
Mayo Clinic researchers have demonstrated that a noninvasive screening test can detect not only colorectal cancer but also the common cancers above the colon — including pancreas, stomach, biliary and esophageal cancers. This is one of more than 100 Mayo Clinic studies being presented at Digestive Disease Week 2009 in Chicago, May 30June 4. Patients are often worried about invasive tests like colonoscopies, and yet these tests have been the key to early cancer detection and prevention, says David Ahlquist, M.D., Mayo Clinic gastroenterologist and lead researcher on the study. Our research team continues to look for more patient-friendly tests with expanded value, and this new study reveals an opportunity for multi-organ digestive cancer screening with a single noninvasive test. The researchers studied 70 patients with cancers throughout the digestive tract. Besides colon cancer, the study looked at throat, esophagus, stomach, pancreatic, bile duct, gallbladder and small bowel cancers to determine if gene mutations could be detected in stool samples. Using a stool test approach developed at Mayo Clinic, researchers targeted DNA from cells that are shed continuously from the surface of these cancers. Also studied were 70 healthy patients. Stool tests were performed on cancer patients and healthy controls by technicians unaware of sample source. The stool DNA test was positive in over 70 percent of digestive cancers, but remained negative for all healthy controls, thus demonstrating the approachs feasibility. Stool DNA testing detected cancers at each organ site, including 65 percent of esophageal cancers, 62 percent of pancreatic cancers, and 75 percent of bile duct and gallbladder cancers. In this series, 100 percent of both stomach and colorectal cancers were detected. Importantly, stool test results did not differ by cancer stage; early-stage cancers were just as likely to be detected as late-stage cancers.

The National Institutes of Health presents Barnett Kramer, director of the Office of Medical Applications of Research, in a discussion of the efficacy and risks of currently available cancer screening processes. Though it is commonly accepted that early detection saves lives, some cancer screening procedures have yet to be proven effective. What harms have been associated with these procedures that are meant to save lives? And why are they often overlooked? Learn what constitutes an effective screening test, and how intuition may play a role in cancer screening.

Primary care physicians can fill gap in colorectal cancer screening
The number of people who need colonoscopies to screen for colorectal cancer is outpacing the number of endoscopists available to perform them, Medical College of Georgia researchers say. A booming aging population has increased the number of people over 50, the age when the American Cancer Society recommends beginning regular screening for colorectal cancer, the third most common and second most fatal cancer in the United States.

Colon Cancer Statistics
In this video, Hans Rosling shows that cancer in the large intestine, i.e. colon, gets more common when countries get richer. The data is compiled by IARC ( International Agency for research on Cancer) in Lyon, France. It reveals that colon cancer is equally common in men and women, that eat similar diets, in high-income countries. Prevention through promotion of health diet have not yet had any big effect but advanced screening programs and improved treatment have decreased the death rate among colon cancer patients in high-income countries. It is paradoxical that high-income leads to a diet that cause this cancer while at the same time only high-income can support a health service that can cure it. Effective prevention could avoid a lot of suffering and save money for health services. http://is.gd/CJKJ - New cases of colon cancer per 100 000 men (with size showing size of population) Help us caption & translate this video! http://amara.org/v/Dxsu/

DiagnoCure's Previstage GCC to improve the staging of colorectal cancer patients
Previstage™ GCC is new molecular test for the staging of colorectal cancer patients. Staging a patient with colorectal cancer is crucial because it determines the patients course of treatment after the surgery. Current standard of care requires that pathologists microscopically examine a thin slice of tissue from each of the lymph nodes harvested during the patient's surgery to see if cancer has spread. Currently, up to 30 percent of patients with no pathologically-positive lymph nodes (stage I and II cancers) later develop recurrent disease, presumably through occult metastases that have escaped detection. Most of these patients do not receive additional therapies such as chemotherapy. With a detection capacity that is close to 100,000 x more sensitive than microscopic methods, Previstage™ GCC provides clinicians with significantly more accurate information for staging a patient with colorectal cancer that will increase their confidence in making critical treatment decisions.

Virtual GI Biopsy-Mayo Clinic
Colon cancer is a deadly disease that, thanks to screening tools, can be prevented and cured if caught early. One of the current ways to look for cancer or pre-cancerous polyps is with colonoscopy. That's the test during which doctors use a scope to spot and remove polyps which they send to a lab for diagnosis. But now, a new technology allows doctors to determine if you have pre-cancerous polyps without having to remove them first. Doctors at Mayo Clinic say it could save many people from having unnecessary biopsies.

Bowel Cancer - Lets Beat Bowel Cancer
In 2008, much-loved Melbourne-based entertainment and TV personality Geoff Coxy Cox (formerly a drummer in the Little River Band) was diagnosed with bowel cancer. Coxy went on to receive treatment at Melbournes Cabrini Hospital, having a tumour the size of tennis ball removed from his colon, before undergoing a course of chemotherapy that was completed in May 2009. He has since been given the all clear by doctors, and being the big-hearted man that he is, Coxy has now stepped forward to promote the importance of screening for the early signs of bowel cancer. He is especially keen to emphasise the existence of a form of screening called a Faecal Occult Blood (FOB) Test because it is a simple, non-invasive test that can be completed in privacy at home, without any discomfort. Bowel cancer is • Is the most common internal cancer in Australian men & women • Claims the lives of around 5,000 Australians every year (the equivalent of one death every two hours) • Bowel cancer can develop with few, if any, early warning signs. • Bowel cancer is one of only two preventable cancers (the other being cervical cancer) because if detected early, it can be treated (with a success rate of 90%) • The second leading cause of cancer related deaths in Australia after lung cancer. The good news is that if detected and treated at an early stage* it can usually be prevented. Currently fewer than 40% of bowel cancers are detected early^. Clinical trials have shown that population screening for bowel cancer, using Faecal Occult Blood (FOB) Tests can reduce deaths from this disease. An initiative of Cabrini Health, Let's Beat Bowel Cancer is a not-for-profit, community awareness program dedicated to saving lives through improved bowel cancer research, education and prevention.

Study Links Aspirin to Colon Cancer Survival
This is the VOA Special English Health Report, from http://voaspecialenglish.com People since ancient times have used aspirin-like medicines to fight pain and reduce high body temperature. Modern research has found other uses for aspirin. The drug acts as a blood thinner. It can help blood flow past a blockage in an artery. Blockages can cause heart attacks or strokes. As a result, patients at risk of blockages might be advised by their doctors to take a low-strength aspirin every day. And research continues. A new study has shown that aspirin can improve survival in colon cancer patients. It involved about one thousand three hundred patients with colorectal cancer. The cancer had not spread to other parts of the body yet. The study compared patients who took three hundred twenty-five milligrams of aspirin at least two times a week with those who did not use aspirin. The study found that the aspirin users had an almost thirty percent lower risk of dying from their cancer. That was during an average of eleven years after the cancer was discovered. Andrew Chan of Harvard Medical School and Massachusetts General Hospital led the study. Doctor Chan says the effects appeared especially strong among patients with tumors expressing an enzyme called COX-2. Two-thirds of colorectal cancers produce that chemical. Doctor Chan thinks the aspirin works by blocking it. The study appeared in the Journal of the American Medical Association. It was an observational study. In a controlled study, some patients would have taken aspirin. Others would have received a placebo -- sugar pills -- for comparison. Last year, Doctor Chan reported that a long-term study of almost fifty thousand men showed that aspirin can help prevent colon cancer. But the effects required at least six years of regular use. And the greatest risk reductions were in those who took more than fourteen aspirins per week. But the researchers warned that the dangers from such large amounts of aspirin should be carefully considered. Aspirin is a kind of nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug, or NSAID. The earlier study found comparable reductions from the use of other NSAIDs, but not from the use of acetaminophen. All of these drugs have their uses but they also have risks. Aspirin can cause bleeding in the stomach, the intestines and the brain. People who might want to consider taking aspirin as a preventative measure should first talk to a doctor. And thats the VOA Special English Health Report. (Adapted from a radio program broadcast 19Aug2009)
