Why Are American Health Care Costs So High?
In which John discusses the complicated reasons why the United States spends so much more on health care than any other country in the world, and along the way reveals some surprising information, including that Americans spend more of their tax dollars on public health care than people in Canada, the UK, or Australia. Who's at fault? Insurance companies? Drug companies? Malpractice lawyers? Hospitals? Or is it more complicated than a simple blame game? (Hint: It's that one.) For a much more thorough examination of health care expenses in America, I recommend this series at The Incidental Economist: http://theincidentaleconomist.com/wordpress/what-makes-the-us-health-care-system-so-expensive-introduction/ The Commonwealth Fund's Study of Health Care Prices in the US: http://www.commonwealthfund.org/~/media/Files/Publications/Issue%20Brief/2012/May/1595_Squires_explaining_high_hlt_care_spending_intl_brief.pdf Some of the stats in this video also come from this New York Times story: http://www.nytimes.com/2013/06/02/health/colonoscopies-explain-why-us-leads-the-world-in-health-expenditures.html?pagewanted=all This is the first part in what will be a periodic series on health care costs and reforms leading up to the introduction of the Affordable Care Act, aka Obamacare, in 2014.

Rx-Xchange—An effective solution to rising costs of medications
Our business model identifies waste and overpayment for prescription medications and helps employers and employees work together to reduce expenditures. Using our system of medication data evaluation, consumer education and plan design, we can save employers and employees 20%-50% on the cost of medications. There are few new, innovative medications developed each year and the majority of drugs that are brought to the market are "me too" or "follow-on" drugs. Manufacturers make slight changes to an old chemical and charge exorbitant prices for their "new" patented drug. Our team of pharmacists evaluates the myriad of choices in medications and provide unbiased information and strategies to help employers and employees make better decisions regarding formularies, medication purchases and compliance. Improved decisions can result in savings and better clinical outcomes for employers and employees. Read more about Rx-Xchange at http://www.rx-xchange.com/about-rx-xchange

Total federal expenditures under Medicare Part D during that same two-year time period came to $227 billion. Medicare Parts A and B cover hospitalization, skilled nursing care, doctor visits, and other medical services and supplies. Government has spent $3.7 Trillion on welfare since Obama took office
New research from the Republicans on the Senate Budget Committee shows that over the last 5 years, the U.S. has spent about $3.7 trillion on welfare. "We have just concluded the 5th fiscal year since President Obama took office. During those five years, the federal government has spent a total $3.7 trillion on approximately 80 different means-tested poverty and welfare programs. The common feature of means-tested assistance programs is that they are graduated based on a person's income and, in contrast to programs like Social Security or Medicare, they are a free benefit and not paid into by the recipient," says the minority side of the Senate Budget Committee. "The enormous sum spent on means-tested assistance is nearly five times greater than the combined amount spent on NASA, education, and all federal transportation projects over that time. ($3.7 trillion is not even the entire amount spent on federal poverty support, as states contribute more than $200 billion each year to this federal nexus—primarily in the form of free low-income health care.) "Because the welfare budget is so fragmented—food stamps are only one of 15 federal programs that provide food assistance—it makes effective oversight nearly impossible, at the same time disguising the scope of the budget from both taxpayers and lawmakers alike. For instance, it is easier for anti-reform lawmakers to oppose food stamp savings by obscuring the fact that a household receiving food stamps is often simultaneously eligible for a myriad of federal aid programs including free cash assistance, subsidized housing, free medical care, free child care, and home energy assistance. "In the UK, six of the nation's welfare programs have been consolidated into a single credit and total benefits have been capped at £26,000 (about $42,100 per family) in an effort to both improve standards and decrease net expenditures. A similar reform concept in the United States—combining welfare spending into a single credit—would still result in a surprisingly large welfare benefit while reducing expenditures and allowing for reforms that encourage self-sufficiency. For instance, a CATO study found that an average household in the District of Columbia currently receiving the six largest federal welfare benefits (Medicaid, TANF, SNAP, etc.) receives assistance with a converted cash value of $43,000. In Hawaii, it's $49,000. Hypothetically, if net benefits from these myriad programs were combined into a single credit and capped at even 95 percent of that very large amount, it would save taxpayers billions while enabling reforms to promote self-sufficiency, reduce the penalty for working, and make the system fairer for taxpayers."

Sen Franken:Why Repealing Obamacare Is A Dumb Idea
Partial transcript of Senator Al Franken's (DFL- Minnesota) speech about Republican threats to shut down the government unless "Obamacare" is defunded. "The fact is, if the law is repealed, a lot of things Americans like will be taken away from them. Americans don't want seniors' prescription drug costs to go up; and they don't want children with pre-existing conditions to be kicked off their health plans—which are just a couple of the things that would happen if the law were repealed. "Last year, more than 54,000 seniors in Minnesota got a 50 percent discount on their covered brand-name prescription drugs when they hit the donut hole. This discount resulted in an average savings of $644 per person, and a total savings of more than 34 million dollars in Minnesota alone. And we're not done—by 2020, the donut hole will be closed completely. That would go away if we repealed the health reform law. "And thanks to a provision that allows young adults up to age 26 to stay on their parents' health insurance, 35,000 young people in Minnesota and more than 3 million nationally were able to keep their health coverage. Those young people would be kicked off their coverage if we repealed the health care law. "Health reform also ended insurance companies setting lifetime limits on the amount of care that you can receive. So if you or a loved one gets sick, you can never be told by your health insurer, that's it—no more coverage for you, go ahead and file for bankruptcy. And guess what—if Congress repealed the health reform law, that would go away too. "I'm not saying the law is perfect. But if there are problems, the American people want us to work together to fix them, not to refight old fights."

Pelosi Quotes George Washington to Demonize Republicans over Budget-Cites Mythical 'Cuts'
Newly elected dem FLAKE Nancy Peolosi continues her mindless charade and demonizaion fo the GOP. Not only haven't the cuts come into effect, the dems are seeking to halt them and may even be COUNTING THEM TWICE. The Budget Control Act of 2011 (BCA; P.L. 112-25) provided for an increase in the statutory limit on the public debt in conjunction with a variety of measures to reduce the budget deficit. Included in these measures was the creation of a Joint Select Committee on Deficit Reduction, which was tasked to develop and submit a plan to Congress containing deficit reduction to total at least $1.2 trillion over the FY2012-FY2021 period. However, because the committee did not report out recommendations, the BCA's automatic spending reduction process was triggered. This process, set to begin on January 2, 2013, would reduce federal outlays over the next decade unless legislation is enacted to prevent it. Both President Obama and some Members of Congress have offered proposals for repealing or modifying the automatic spending reductions. The President's FY2013 Budget Proposal eliminates the automatic spending reductions for all nine years and replaces them with alternative measures to reduce the deficit Following LInk ends in .pdf The link now shows up as infected, non hosted http://www.fas.org/sgp/crs/misc/R42675

Advanced Old Age in America : What Can We Count On?
The recent wave of proposals to reform the health care system and "bend the cost curve" present a tremendous opportunity to improve care for the fastest growing, most expensive, and least well-served age group in the U.S.—our frail elderly. Americans in advanced old age generally have complex health and social situations, limitations in self-care capabilities, and limited financial and personal resources. Yet the health and social services we need when old and frail are poorly planned, unnecessarily costly, and disconnected. As the nation considers different strategies and policy changes to strengthen and streamline health care, we must also include a special focus on the distinct priorities and preferences that we will have when we are old and frail, as well as those of our family members and caregivers. JOHN MAYNARD KEYNES: The Economic Consequences of the Peace FULL Audiobook
JOHN MAYNARD KEYNES: The Economic Consequences of the Peace FULL Audiobook - The Economic Consequences of the Peace (1919) is a book written and published by John Maynard Keynes. Keynes attended the Versailles Conference as a delegate of the British Treasury and argued for a much more generous peace. It was a bestseller throughout the world and was critical in establishing a general opinion that the Versailles Treaty was a "Carthaginian peace". It helped to consolidate American public opinion against the treaty and involvement in the League of Nations. The perception by much of the British public that Germany had been treated unfairly in turn was a crucial factor in public support for appeasement. The success of the book established Keynes' reputation as a leading economist especially on the left. When Keynes was a key player in establishing the Bretton Woods system in 1944, he remembered the lessons from Versailles as well as the Great Depression. The Marshall Plan after Second World War is a similar system to that proposed by Keynes in The Economic Consequences of the Peace. The book was released in late 1919 and became an immediate bestseller on both sides of the Atlantic: it was released in the US in 1920. The scathing sketches of Wilson, Lloyd George and Clemenceau proved to be very popular and the work established Keynes' reputation with the public as a leading economist. In six months, the book had sold 100,000 copies with translations into 12 languages. It restored Keynes' reputation with the Bloomsbury Group which had been tarnished by his work for the treasury during the war. Keynes returned to Cambridge to work as an economist where he was regarded as the leading student of Alfred Marshall.(summary adapted from wikipedia.org - Attribution: http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=The_Economic_Consequences_of_the_Peace&action=history) - SUBSCRIBE to Greatest Audio Books: http://www.youtube.com/GreatestAudioBooks - Become a FRIEND: Facebook: http://www.Facebook.com/GreatestAudioBooks Google+: - READ along by clicking (CC) for Closed Caption Transcript! - LISTEN to the entire audiobook for free!
