Hypertension (Part 2 of 3) - Pathophysiology

09:12
Moof's Medical Biochemistry Video Course: http://moof-university.thinkific.com/courses/medical-biochemistry-for-usmle-step-1-exam In this video, I discuss some details of the pathophysiology of hypertension, which is still being researched by scientists. I mention how blood pressue is related to cardiac output and peripheral resistance. I also discuss how cardiac output is found from stroke volume and heart rate. Anything that increase cardiac output and/or peripheral resistance will increase blood pressure. I discuss the intrinsic control of stroke volume as it relates to heart size and heart muscle contractility, as well as blood volume. I also discuss extrinsic control by epinephrine and norepinephrine of the sympathetic nervous system. I also mention how heart rate is affected by the sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous systems. Further, genetics, the autonomic nervous system (ANS), the Renin Angiotension Aldosterone System (RAAS), and endothelial dysfunction are all elaborated upon as elements that can and will influence blood pressure. Orthostatic hypotension

07:35
Orthostatic hypotension (/ˌɔrθəˈstætɪkˌhaɪpəˈtɛnʃən/) , also known as postural hypotension, orthostasis, and colloquially as head rush or dizzy spell, is a form of hypotension in which a person's blood pressure suddenly falls when standing up or stretching. In medical terms, it is defined as a fall in systolic blood pressure of at least 20 mm Hg or diastolic blood pressure of at least 10 mm Hg when a person assumes a standing position. The symptom is caused by blood pooling in the lower extremities upon a change in body position. It is quite common and can occur briefly in anyone, although it is prevalent in particular among the elderly, and those with low blood pressure. This video is targeted to blind users. What Is The Definition Of Adrenal failure Medical Dictionary Free Online

01:19
what is the definition of Adrenal failure: A condition in which the adrenal glands do not produce enough of the adrenal hormones that control important functions such as blood pressure. The adrenal glands sit on top of the kidneys. The adrenal is made up of an outer layer (the cortex) and an inner portion (the medulla). The adrenal glands produce hormones that help control the heart rate, blood pressure, the way the body uses food, and other vital functions. The adrenal cortex secretes steroid (cortisone-related) hormones and mineralocortoids that regulate the levels of minerals such as sodium and potassium in the blood. The adrenal medulla makes adrenaline (epinephrine) and noradrenaline (norepinephrine). Adrenaline is secreted in response to low blood levels of glucose as well as exercise and stress; it causes the breakdown of the storage product glycogen to the sugar glucose in the liver, facilitates the release of fatty acids from adipose (fat) tissue, causes dilation (widening) of the small arteries within muscle and increases the output of the heart. Noradrenaline is a neurohormone, a neurotransmitter, for of most of the so-called sympathetic nervous system. The term "Addison's disease" refers to long-term insufficiency of the adrenal cortex. This may be due to a number of different insults to the adrenal including physical trauma, hemorrhage, and tuberculosis of the adrenal, and destruction of the cells in the pituitary gland that secrete ACTH (adrenocorticotropic hormone) which normally drives the adrenal. Addison's disease is characterized by bronzing of the skin, anemia, weakness, and low blood pressure. The U.S. President John F. Kennedy had Addison's disease. The condition is named after the British physician Thomas Addison (1793-1860). medical terminology, medical dictionary, medical dictionary free download, medical terminology made easy, medical terminology song
