Stem cell therapy -- beyond the headlines: Timothy Henry at TEDxGrandForks

17:54
There is considerable excitement about the use of stem cells for cardiovascular disease. Stem cells are unspecialized cells with the unique property to self-renew or make copies of themselves and to differentiate into specialized cells. The goal of stem cell therapy is to enhance the body's natural process of regeneration. There are a considerable number of stem cells currently under investigation for patients with heart attacks, angina, heart failure, and peripheral arterial disease. We have made considerable progress but have many questions left to answer. Timothy Henry, MD, FACC, is Chief of Cardiology at Cedars Sinai Heart Institute in Los Angeles, California. Dr. Henry earned his bachelor's degree at the University of North Dakota, graduated from medical school at University of California, San Francisco, in 1982, and was chief medicine resident from 1982--1986 at University of Colorado Health Sciences Center. He completed his training as a cardiology fellow, chief cardiology fellow, and interventional cardiology fellow at University of Minnesota in 1991. His research interests include interventional cardiology, acute myocardial infarction and novel therapies, including stem cell and gene therapy, for patients who are not candidates for standard revascularization techniques. Dr. Henry has published over 250 manuscripts and book chapters and has served on the Research Committee for the Minnesota Affiliate of the AHA and the Emergency Care Committee for the ACC; he currently serves on the Advisory Committee for the AHA Mission: Lifeline Program, the AHA Acute Cardiac Care Committee of the Council on Clinical Cardiology and on the ACC Interventional Subcommittee. He has served as national principal investigator of multiple large, multicenter trials in acute coronary syndromes, myocardial infarction and angiogenesis including several ongoing cardiovascular stem cell trials including RENEW, ALLSTAR and ATHENA. He is also principal investigator for 1 of 7 NIH Clinical Cardiovascular Stem Cell Centers. He is a fellow at ACC and SCAI and a member of Alpha Omega Alpha and the AHA Council on Clinical Cardiology. Health Alert: Oncology Social Worker

02:01
Cancer patients need emotional support as much as physical care. As News 13's Jay Siltzer explains in today's Health Alert, that's why one local hospital now has a certified oncology social worker on staff. Linda Louzon is on the path to recovery with help from her husband John. Still, they can't forget what happened almost one year ago. Linda, cancer survivor, "when my doctor informed me it was breast cancer, it's incredible how that kind of news can just shut a person down." John, Linda's husband, "I was speechless and shocked." Linda, "fear, wonder if I'm going to survive, thinking about my family." But Park Ridge Health Certified Oncology Social Worker Lauren Woodard began thinking about Linda. Lauren Woodard, LCSW, Park Ridge Health, "my goal is to meet the patient when they are diagnosed and to be a support during treatment and then offer survivorship resources after they are finished with surgery, radiation or chemotherapy." During sessions, Lauren helped Linda work through anxiety, depression and concerns about recurrence. Her husband John proved equally helpful, having walked this path with his first wife who died from cancer. John, "it was hard to keep on task and start thinking positive, but I said I've been there, seen it, done it and let's hope this is not the same journey." Lauren, "so many times the chemotherapy is the easiest part of the journey for some patients, it's the emotional aspect that really ongoing problems for patients." Linda, "Lauren has given me tools, education, ammunition to be able to fight my way out of this and look at the positive things of this and how to put this in my rear-view mirror." All while moving forward to a healthier tomorrow. Studies show demand for oncology social workers is increasing faster than most fields in health care.

Neurology: Some of the Nation's Most Advanced Care at Cincinnati Children's

02:40
http://www.cincinnatichildrens.org. Some children struggle with near-constant seizures. Some are born with severe movement disorders. Others are living with brain tumors, growing up with autism or experiencing life-disrupting migraine headaches. All of these children have problems related to their nervous systems. And many of them turn to the Division of Neurology at Cincinnati Children's to receive some of the nation's most advanced care. Brain injuries. Epilepsy. Tuberous sclerosis. Duchenne muscular dystrophy . Our deep expertise in these and many other conditions explain why the magazine U.S. News & World Report recently rated our neurology and neurosurgery services among the top four in the country. It's the closely intertwined missions of clinical care and research that make our neurology team so special. Our physicians use the most advanced equipment in the world to diagnose and treat children. Our scientists use the latest technology to analyze the effectiveness of care, uncover the causes of disease and search for better therapies. Our extensive research projects include leading a national study that determined the best first-line treatment for a common form of seizures. We've made major advances in shrinking the tumors caused by tuberous sclerosis. And our team was recently selected to coordinate the nation's largest study of pediatric migraines. Looking forward, our Neurology team is expanding its work in several specialty areas. These include sleep medicine, pediatric stroke and neuro-critical care. This summer, we also plan to launch a program in neuro-immunology. Few other pediatric medical centers offer such a comprehensive range of expertise. Our goal at Cincinnati Children's is to continue building upon that expertise to improve outcomes for all children with neurologic disease.

The secret to self control | Jonathan Bricker | TEDxRainier

15:14
Jonathan Bricker's work has uncoved a scientifically sound approach to behavior change that is twice as effective as most currently practiced methods. His new methods are driving new norms and new apps for how people quit smoking and decrease obesity, saving many people from an early death. Jonathan Bricker is an internationally recognized scientific leader in a bold approach called acceptance and commitment therapy. A Stanford researcher called his use of the approach “a breakthrough in behavioral research [that] has major public health implications for the major causes of preventable death.” Bricker and his team, having received $10 million in total federal research grants to study this topic, are rigorously testing this intervention on multiple platforms, including smartphone apps, websites, and telephone coaching. His SmartQuit app for quitting smoking was recently launched and is now in distribution worldwide. Doing our best for cancer - all for one, and one for all: Dr. Tony Blau at TEDxTacoma

16:06
Dr. Tony Blau is a Professor in the Division of Hematology, Department of Medicine and Adjunct Professor in the Department of Genome Sciences at the University of Washington (UW). Originally from Ohio, Blau was drawn to Seattle because of its legacy as the birthplace of bone marrow transplantation, an intense form of leukemia treatment, and the first stem cell therapy. Dr. Blau specializes in orchestrating collaborations across disparate scientific disciplines toward grand goals. As a physician-scientist and husband of a busy community oncologist, he came to believe that our approach to cancer needs to be fundamentally restructured, and for this reason founded the UW's Center for Cancer Innovation (CCI). Grounded in the belief that a single patient can teach us a great deal about cancer, CCI applies the latest scientific knowledge to the treatment of today's cancer patients while using their experiences to benefit all cancer patients tomorrow. CCI recently launched its first clinical trial in an aggressive form of breast cancer called "triple-negative" breast cancer. CCI is a grass-roots "coalition of the willing," comprised of nearly 100 community and academic oncologists, scientists, computational biologists, and other specialists from six different organizations, and owes much of its success to support from the South Sound region. Dr. Blau has served on numerous advisory panels for the National Institutes of Health. He received his medical degree from Ohio State University and completed his residency in internal medicine at Duke University. Gift of Life Bone Marrow Foundation 2014 Virtual Gala and Tribute to Arlene Feinberg

26:03
A true hero was recognized posthumously by the Gift of Life Bone Marrow Foundation for her humanitarian work saving lives through an online broadcast that took place on Sunday June 22, 2014. Like Oscar Schindler, Arlene Feinberg, the organization's matriarch, rescued thousands whose lives were in grave danger. She found them bone marrow donors for their much needed transplants, affording them ---  and their generations to follow --- second chances at life. Arlene Feinberg passed away in January from cancer.   The broadcast was a "Virtual Gala" that came from Gift of Life's headquarters in Boca Raton, Florida, allowing supporters all over the world to witness behind-the-scenes registry operations for the first time. Hosted by Board Chairman Bill Begal and Jay Feinberg, Gift of Life's co-founder, the event featured a donor-recipient meeting, a moving video tribute and the launch of "Arlene's Vision," a $4 million fundraising campaign named in memory of the organization's matriarch.   Please watch Gift of Life's 2014 "Virtual Gala" and see what the organization, its mission and vision are all about!

Kim Rogers's husband was diagnosed with Stage IV colon cancer in 2003. With two young children, her life was changed forever as she assumed the role of caregiver alongside mother and wife. She has learned much through her journey and wants to help as many people as she can that may be in the same position. Kim stresses that you should let no doctor define the amount of time that you have on this earth. You should work every day to do as most as you can with the time you have with your loved ones. Robot Surgeons are the Future of Medicine

04:25
Share on Facebook: http://on.fb.me/11mi0da DISCLAIMER: Surgical imagery depicted. Not for the easily squeamish! // Medical technology is getting weirder everyday -- in a good way. Robotic surgery and computer-assisted medicine are already doing amazing things right now -- just look at the da Vinci Surgical System! Are you ready to ditch the hospital and buy a robot surgeon for the home? Let's say you have to have a dangerous surgical procedure. Which would you choose? The best human surgeon alive today, or the best robot surgeon from 50 years in the future? Let us know your decision and why in the comments below! -------------------------------------------------------- Subscribe to Fw:Thinking: http://www.youtube.com/subscription_center?add_user=fwthinking For the audio podcast, blog and more, visit the Fw:Thinking website: http://www.fwthinking.com Fw:Thinking on Twitter: http://www.twitter.com/fwthinking Jonathan Stickland on Twitter: http://www.twitter.com/jonstrickland Fw:Thinking on Facebook: http://www.facebook.com/FWThinking01 Fw:Thinking on Google+: https://plus.google.com/u/0/108500616405453822675/ [TRANSCRIPT]: RoboCop, Robodog, Robo...doctor? Alright, medical technology is getting weirder by the day. But I mean that in a good way. Take the iKnife for example. It's a surgical knife that actually vaporizes tissue, and then analyzes the smoke that comes out so that a surgeon can know if she's cutting into cancerous cells, or healthy margins. Or what about mechanical leeches? They pretty much do what medicinal leeches do, only with less chance of a bacterial infection and a lot less...writhing. There's only so much improvement you can do to a tool before you eventually have to turn your attention to the hand that holds that tool. And that's where robotic surgery comes in. So do you remember the autonomous surgery pod in Ridley Scott's Prometheus? How far away are we from something like that? Well, not as far away as you might think. You see, robotic surgery and computer-assisted medicine are already doing amazing things right now. And the potential for what they could do in the future could change medicine forever! One of the most common surgical robots is the da Vinci line. Da Vinci is focused on translating a surgeon's control movements into direct action upon a patient. So every time a human moves, the robot moves. Unless of course a T-Rex happens to be walking by, in which case the robot actually filters out any of those little hand tremors. So that way you get pure control. No error. Another advantage of robot surgeons is the chance for telesurgery. So lets assume that you're some sort of futuristic penguin research scientist and you're on assignment off the coast of Antarctica, when suddenly you need an appendectomy. But your ship is completely trapped by ice and your ship's surgeon has been, I don't know, kidnapped by ice pirates or something. What do you do? Well essentially you Skype it in. A surgeon on the mainland sits down at a terminal and supervises robotically assisted telesurgery via satellite uplink. Another advantage is minimally invasive procedures. Now see traditional open surgery can leave big scars, they can take a long time to heal, and there's a lot of pain involved in recovery. But what if instead of making a four inch incision in your stomach, we were able to do the same procedure using instruments put through little half-inch holes. Now human doctors have been doing minimally invasive procedures for years, but honestly there's only so much human hands can do through these tiny holes in your skin. But robotic precision means those incisions have gotten smaller and smaller over time. And if we continue through this miniaturization rabbit hole, who knows? Maybe one day there'll be barely a notion of what an in-patient procedure is. Now the future for robotic surgery is wide open. Just take a look at what people have created with the Raven line. This is an open-source robotic surgeon and, sure, it looks like a couple of mechanical spider arms, but the important thing here is research. You see it creates a common platform for people to do experiments which will determine the future of robotic surgery. But beyond all that, instead of just talking about robotic assisted surgeries, lets talk about their full potential. We're talking autonomous robot surgeons. With machine learning, a robot surgeon could potentially study all the information from successful procedures in the past and apply that to learn how to do those procedures in the future. And if they prove to be as good or better than human surgeons, maybe we wouldn't even go to hospitals to have surgery. Instead if you expected to have a surgery, you might buy a robot surgeon for the home, or for the office, or for the spacecraft.

The Chili Cook OFF Teaser Trailer

01:05
On October 25th, 2014 we are doing a Chili Cook Off to benefit some friends who are struggling with Leukemia in their family. Take a read below. One day Mozelle and Jay were sitting at Bennett's Bistro on Mercer Island catching up over a glass of vino... and the subject of Andrea and her husband Scott came up. They just married last summer and received devastating news this summer. We decided that we could help to bring the community together. So the idea of the Chili Cook Off was born. What better way to raise money for a good cause...get a wonderful group of friends together, eat fabulous Chili, raffle off some prizes, drink some wine and carouse all while finding ways to help a great couple. So on October 25th, we will gather at the Island Square Residence Lounge to do just that. Come join us. All proceeds raised will go directly to the Hoffman's to help pay for Scott's care. We are charging a small event fee of $10.00 per person to hold your spot for this incredible cook off. Money will be raised by dollars in a tip jar for each chef also raffle tickets will be available. Going to be an epic night of heart, smiles, laughter and a celebration of life. Tickets available here.. http://events.r20.constantcontact.com/register/event?llr=9l8zfumab&oeidk=a07e9u7af8s0bfaf434&condition=SO_OVERRIDE ***************************** Let's rally around Scott to help raise money for his Leukemia therapy and living expenses. For months Scott had been experiencing deep, migrating pain in various places throughout his body. He was passed around from doctor to doctor with no answers as to why this was happening. Finally, Scott was brought into the ER on July 15, where someone finally took a blood test and immediately knew something was wrong. On July 18 he was diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia, or ALL. Scott's type of cancer is the most common cancer in children but very rare for adults. Being an otherwise healthy, fit guy, Scott's treatment is very similar to that of a young patient... very aggressive. On July 24 Scott was admitted to the University of Washington Medical Center where he began the first of his 6 months of chemotherapy. Under the care of some of the top doctors in the country, Scott's prognosis is good if complications are minimized. Scott spends 4-6 days a week at the Seattle Cancer Care Alliance receiving treatment for his condition. Scott is not able to work or receive pay from his employer at this time. Since he has not been with his employer for over one year, he does not qualify for FMLA benefits or disability, and was recently terminated. The only income is now coming from Scott's wife, Andrea and bills are quickly piling up. With Scott's upcoming loss of insurance coverage, He will have to be added to his wife's insurance plan where out-of-pocket maximums will have to again be reached. Your support, whether financially or through prayer is greatly appreciated. All our love, Andrea and Scott

[Chelsea] I've had two kids and so things weren't the same that they were before and I just wanted to maybe have something back. [Tami] We call each other 'breasty besties'. We decided to go through the whole experience together and kind of take care of each other through the whole process I guess. [Chelsea] It was great, as soon as we walked in the door, everyone was very friendly, welcoming, and just super sweet, with big smiles on their face and it just felt like I was an instant friend. [Tami] I felt everything was very thorough and I was very comfortable, never uncomfortable, right away leaving here I knew- [Chelsea] I was going back and forth about what type and what size and stuff but really Dr. Jonov's recommendations are what I ultimately went with and it turned out exactly how I wanted. Super impressed with that. We've actually already referred quite a few people here. [Tami] I've referred many people, handed out a lot of business cards just because I completely have trust in Dr. Jonov and the whole staff here and I think our word has meant a lot to a lot of other people as to coming here. To just do it, to just jump and do it, it's worth it.

AESAONE:Al Amoudi's AESAONE Employee Quits 6/2014

AESAONE:Al Amoudi's AESAONE Employee Quits 6/2014 Read The E-mail Letter Below: Aklilu Date: Jun 18, 2014 2:20 PM Subject: Goodbye To Bisrat Meskel" To my Aesaone family: I wanted to say goodbye to all of you; I sent my resignation letter to our Chairman earlier today. My goal in this organization had been to institutionalize transparency, accountability, honesty and professional discourse. I have fought all year to get these things in place. However, as the underneath response to my latest request for transparency indicates I have failed to achieve my goal. I will not detail all my concerns here; I have already shared them with the Chairman privately. I hope he will make the necessary corrections. For me however, this is the end of the road. I do not want to be President nor do I want any part at all. Some of you may wonder why I waited so long to disassociate myself if I had such strong concerns. The answer to that is the fact that I had already resigned in March but only returned because I was promised major changes promptly. Unfortunately, the promised changes never came. I waited, waited and waited but now I can wait no more. Effective immediately I want any mention of my name to be taken off from Aesaone web-site, Facebook page or any other communication. I wish you all Godspeed as I join the 2 other "new young leaders" that left before me into early retirement. That makes me the third of the original 4 "new leaders" to leave Aesaone in less than a year. Sincerely, Aklilu Gidey :source: http://www.siitube.com/articles Below is From Akilu's Facebook page : June 20 I have decided to stop associating with Aesaone. I do not want to get into details; I will just say that we did not see eye to eye regarding some issues. I resigned from my position earlier this week. Now time for me to devote more attention to my dear wife and beautiful children. — with Afewerki Tadesse Zenawi and 25 others Sources :https://www.facebook.com/aklilu.gidey?fref=ts Below:Background of Al Amoudi connection to Oromo protesters in south Oromia. Al Amoudi Connection To South Oromia: Background on Sheikh Al Amoudi's Lega Dembi Gold Mine ——————————-- 4. (U) Lega Dembi Gold Mine is owned by Mohammed International Development, Research Companies (MIDROC), a company owned by billionaire Sheikh Mohammed Al Amoudi, believed to be the largest foreign investor in Ethiopia. It is the only active industrial gold mine in Ethiopia. On November 24, 2009 MIDROC signed a 10-year agreement with the Ministry of Mines and Energy for the extraction of 20,483 kg. of gold from the Sakaro area, three kilometers from the existing Lega Dembi gold belt in the Guji Zone of the Oromiya Regional State. Gold is Ethiopia's major mineral, and the government is counting on a six-fold increase in production. MIDROC has reportedly earned USD 466 million from Lega Dembi mine since 1998. The granting of Sakaro Gold Mines to MIDROC in the midst of allegations of pollution and lack of community involvement at Laga Dembi angered residents of Shakiso Wereda. Inside The St. Jude Lab

03:10
Stream WZTV Fox 17 Newscasts LIVE starting with Fox 17 This Morning at 5am and News at 9pm. Day in and day out Dr. Stacey Ogden has one goal, to help cure childhood cancer. She says making new discoveries here at a St. Jude Children's Research lab is a scientists dream come true! This is the first childrens hospital to put the scientists, the doctors and the patients all under one roof, so the discoveries made right here in this lab can be tried immediately on sick children when time of course is not on their side. Ogden explains it this way, "In drug companies it can take 15 years from identifying a compound to getting it in a clinic. At St. Jude getting compounds into the clinic can happen much more quickly because the basic scientists communicate with the doctors in the clinic on a daily basis." Ogden's work focuses on shutting down the pathway that allows brain tumors to grow in children in the first place. St. Jude willingly shares its research with any hospital or doctor who wants it publishing its findings worldwide immediately after they're made. All in an effort to save more children. Get your St. Jude Dream Home ticket here: www.stjude.org/dhnashville Hurry, don't wait. We're giving away the home June 22.

Groundbreaking Micronutrient Technology - MMF (Military Micronutrient Formula) There simply is no other orally-ingested antioxidant micronutrient formula shown by human clinical data to be as broadly effective as MMF®. Forces all around us and in us—toxins, pollution, ionizing radiation, industrial waste, poor diet, and much more—cause cellular free-radical damage and threaten our health at the genetic level, leading to premature aging, adverse congenital disorders in our babies, life-threatening chronic diseases, autoimmune disorders and untold suffering and pain. It is literally an unseen battle for your life! But you don’t need to fight these battles alone – The Story After September 11, 2001, some of the Military brass back in D.C. realized that modern technology does a fair job at protecting our troops from ‘bullets and bombs,’ but these external hazards are only part of the equation when it comes to protecting men and women in harm’s way. Almost immediately work began to find ways to protect at-risk personnel from the many ‘unseen’ health hazards. This search for biologic protection led decision makers to a well-known team of antioxidant scientists and doctors in the U.S.A. with special expertise in antioxidant science and genetic research. Military brass wanted to have this product solve 4 main criteria. 1. Eliminate Ionized Radiation 2. Rebuild DNA 3. Treat Effectively Oxidative Stress 4. Fight Inflammation The result of the team’s efforts is the totally unique, pharmaceutical-graded, encapsulated antioxidant micronutrient formulation supplement called MMF®, which provided complete success to all 4 of the military’s main objectives in clinical human trials. Whether on the battleground or on the playground, threats to good health are all around us – they’re odorless, invisible and can have a cumulative and life-long effect on our cells (where DNA resides) and tissues through oxidative stress or free radical damage. To fortify ourselves from the multitude of environmental health threats that cause free radical damage, this pharmaceutical-graded formulation of antioxidant micronutrients in their natural isoform, MMF®, was specifically designed to support the body’s protective mechanisms that safeguard DNA and vital organ systems. MMF is pharmaceutical-graded, 100% safe and natural biological isoform, MMF® contains no heavy metals, no mercury contamination, produces NO free radical damage, has NO side effects, and has been shown through clinical human trials to reverse radiation damage, reduce oxidative stress or free radical damage by 71%, promote recovery from brain trauma, repair 58% of DNA double-strand breaks that lead to birth defects, and when taken with a whole food diet in clinical trials offers 100% protection against cancer tumor growth.
