Exercise After Weight Loss Surgery - Lower Body Exercises | Blossom Bariatrics | Las Vegas Welcome to Blossom Bodies. Today we have two really amazing guest trainers with us, Kristen and Tiff from Riot Conditioning. They're here to show you some really great tips. Okay, today we're going to talk to you about some lower body movements to start with. We're going to work these major muscle groups. It's really important to start with the major muscle groups because those are key to strengthening your joints. So many of you might have issues with your knees or your hips or your ankles. We start with these movements and do them slow and controlled to make sure that you implement them correctly and that you do the right form to strengthen your quads, your hamstrings, and your glutes. We'll start with a lunge. So, today we're just going to use this bench, but you could use a chair. So you're going to hold on to the chair or this bench and just do the lunge with the knee coming all the way down to the ground, stepping up. We're going to have you do ten on one side and then you'll switch and do ten on the other side. Great, the next exercise will be just a squat. Now you can take a chair right behind you. We'll use this bench again and you're going to make sure your feet are shoulder width apart and you're going to go ahead and sit down in that chair and come up. Now really focus on the muscle that your working right now, which would be my quadriceps and my glute muscles. Make sure you squeeze those and your out of your knees. You're not using your knees. She's also keeping her chest up and not bending over, but sitting back. Again, we'll go for ten reps and you can do that three times. Great, and our last exercise is.. Calf raises. .Calf raises. We can do both feet at the same time, or single legged calf raise. So we're going to squeeze at the top, slowly release it, and we're going to do that for 10 reps, three times. Okay, so those are three lower body exercises you can implement to really start to strengthen those major muscle groups. It's really important to really secure those joints. Given up by her birth parents, Meredith was adopted by a loving couple who eventually had another daughter naturally. The only one in the family with weight challenges, Meredith struggled to fit in. She hopes to lose weight to gain confidence to reach out to her birth mother. She even has her goal weight tattooed on her stomach along with the motto “Believe It-Be It.” If she makes it all the way to her goal of 155 pounds, she will qualify for skin removal surgery and can start fresh. The tattoo will be removed. Meredith is at 314 pounds. She needs help to lose the weight. Well, help is on the way! Meredith has been a lifelong fan of the Baywatch TV series. That’s why Chris Powell takes her for a run on the beach. Emotions about her birth mother arise, but Meredith pushes through with her run to make it to the lifeguard stand in the distance. Chris tasks her with losing 80 pounds during Phase 1. Her family vows to support her with healthy foods in the fridge. Her basement has been turned into a gym with a cool beach theme. Unfortunately, the family support she was promised is bumpy, especially with her sister. Chris realizes he needs to take matters into his hands. He’s moving in. Chris works Meredith hard and helps her eat healthy. He also chats with her about the possibility of meeting her birth mother. She’s not quite ready for something like that yet. At the 90-Day Weigh-In, Meredith comes in at 230 which means she lost a total of 84 pounds in 90 days. Chris tosses her into the pool for a celebratory swim before heading home. He tasks Meredith with losing 50 pounds for Phase 2. Chris also wants her to train for a full marathon. Meredith attacks this challenge by running through two pairs of training shoes. As successful as Meredith is physically, she knows she needs to reach out to her birth mom to heal emotionally. She flies to Arizona where Chris offers his full support. Her parents also have her back on this one. While she waits for a response to the letter she sends, Meredith continues to work hard. Knee issues put a wrinkle in her training. She has a tear in her meniscus. She can’t run over eight miles which is tough because a marathon is 26.2. At the 6-Month Weigh-In, Mefredith comes in at 198. She only lost 32 pounds. Still, she’s come a long way. Chris lets Meredith know that he hired a private information to find information about her birth mom. Seeing a photo gives Meredith a feeling of acceptance. Twins David and Rebecca didnt think that much about their weight as they were growing up in North Prairie, WI. Dave, who weighs in at 470 pounds, and Becca, who weighs 398 pounds, spent their childhood making people laugh. Behind the smiles there were tears of pain from a difficult upbringing that led them to use food as an outlet. This brother and sister duo need help getting control of their weight. Well, help is on the way! Chris Powell surprises the twins on their 23rd birthday. He realizes theyre extremely co-dependent and enable each others poor decisions, especially when it comes to their weight. After a rough first workout and a tearful goodbye, the twins are split up for a 90-day challenge, with Becca going to Arizona to work alongside Chriss wife, Heidi. At the beginning of his weight loss journey, Dave says hed always wanted to go through Navy SEAL training to show his dad that he was a man. The twins have Phase 1 goal to lose 200 pounds between them. Dave comes home to a completely redone workout room. It’s a much more inspiring place. Chris surprises him with a visit at the 45-day mark. He’s happy to hear that he’s getting support from his dad. However, he still can’t talk to him about his past issues with drugs and suicide. In Arizona, Becca is introduced to Chris’ wife, Heidi and her exercise therapist, Richard. She also meets former weight loss participant Jacqui. Becca hits the track for a rough workout. Her knees take a major beating, but Becca presses on. She takes on bleacher steps, track runs and MMA training. At the 90-day weigh-in, Dave and Becca are reunited. Both are amazed how much weight each of them has lost. David takes to the scale first. He’s lost 112 pounds and is down to 358. Becca started at 398. She needs to lose 88 pounds to meet the combined weight loss goal of 200 pounds. Becca lost 92 total pounds which means they lost 204 combined. For the next phase, Becca must lose 57 pounds while David is tasked with dropping 75. Dave and Becca are together again. The struggle is working with someone who doesn’t follow the same routine as the other. This concerns Chris, who doesn’t see Dave pushing himself like he was before. At the six-month weigh-in, Becca comes in at 248 pounds. She beat her goal by one pound. As for Dave, he came up 13 pounds short of his goal, but he’s now under 300. Chris lets them know that their milestone is taking place right away. They are embarking on some legitimate Navy SEAL training. Dave and Becca must lose a combined 76 pounds for Phase 3. Trouble arises. Dave doesn’t want to always exercise and Becca takes cues from him to possibly binge. The two of them argue about this issue. Becca feels like she’s being sabotaged by her brother. At the 9-month weigh-in, Chris notices the confidence in his clients. He also learns that they are struggling with their relationship with each other. At the weigh-in, Dave is shown to have lost only 28 pounds. As for Becca, she’s dropped 20 pounds. They didn’t meet the goal, but they have chopped a significant chunk of their body fat. Dave is a good candidate for the skin removal surgery, but his sister is not. This has him feeling guilty about how he treated Becca over the past three months. For the final phase, the twins are separated once more. Dave begins his journey by telling his dad about his suicide attempt by drugs. He says that a phone call from his father where he said that he loved him was all he needed to turn things around. His dad saved his life. The time comes for the final weigh-in. Dave steps out to the cheers of an amazed crowd. He gives his dad a hug before taking the stage. Dave hasn’t seen his sister in three months. He’s blown away by how great she looks when she joins him on the stage. Tears flow. Dave steps onto the scale to see his new weight of 258 pounds! He lost a total of 212 pounds over the course of a year. Becca is up next. She weighs in at 192 pounds. She lost 206 pounds! She’s now a candidate for the skin removal surgery. Combined, Dave and Becca lost a total of 418 pounds! They are a new generation wonder twins!

Angela Mahood has been in pain for a long time. “Three years ago, I ruptured three discs and we did a discectomy to fix it. Six weeks later, I ruptured one again,” said Mahood. When the pain became unbearable, Mahood opted for a two-level spinal fusion – major surgery to alleviate her back pain. “I thought we could get it scheduled right away and I wouldn’t have to wait,” she said. But her surgeon said “not so fast.” Mahood said the doctor told her “You need to lose 50 pounds before I will work on you.” It was not exactly what Mahood wanted to hear. She wanted relief right away; her doctor wanted a successful surgery. “When he explained it – why – the chance of infection is greatly reduced when you lose a lot of weight and my recovery will be a lot faster by losing the weight as well,” said Mahood. “In the beginning, I asked ‘please do it now, just do it tomorrow." Mahood is like millions of Americans – in need of back surgery but not in the best shape for the operation. That’s why CHI Health and the Nebraska Spine Hospital at Immanuel partner on a program called Surgery Readiness where care coordinators who are also registered nurses get patients who need to lose weight, stop smoking, or address other health issues ready for major surgery. “There’s evidence indicating that those with a healthy weight are going to have a better outcome, less surgical complications, less anesthesia complications and just do better post operatively, so that is the reason for the weight loss,” said Robin Olmstead, RN, BSN, ONC, care coordinator, CHI Health Back and Spine Institute. “For smoking cessation, there’s evidence that indicates that they’re not going to fuse post operatively. Most of our patients are having a spinal fusion – probably the most common spine surgery. If they are dependent on nicotine, the fusion is not going to heal.” So lifestyle changes are needed in order to avoid surgical complications. On paper that sounds doable. In reality, if kicking the habit or dropping weight were easy, most people would be skinny and smoke free. So the care coordinators meet with each patient, assess their special needs, figure out their possible roadblocks and come up with a plan that’s tailor made for them. “It can be overwhelming to look at a 100-pound weight loss and ‘How am I going to do this, I’ve tried other plans and I’ve never had success before,’ but they also have never had the support we can offer them every step of the way,” said Olmstead. “Instead of coaching sports, I’m coaching healthy lifestyles,” said Olmstead. And that coach is free. The care coordinators at CHI Health are a vital part of value-based care. They work with patients to get them healthy and keep them healthy – avoiding costly stays in the hospital. "This program is needed,” she said. Mahood will tell you she did the heavy lifting to drop the weight, but Olmstead, her coach, was there to encourage her every step of the way. “I’m getting my life back is truly how I feel,” said Mahood. “I have a husband and two boys and there are so many things I wasn’t able to do with them. So that’s my hope - once I get healed, we’re going to live again.” Before Surgery Readiness, patients would be told to lose weight or stop smoking – and the plan to get there was squarely on their shoulders. Now CHI Health care coordinators are reaching out to patients like Mahood, helping them make lifestyle changes before surgery that will lead to a healthier life after surgery. As someone who has had one inguinal hernia surgery already (and unfortunately heading for a second) I can tell you that it’s not as bad as you think, but it certainly isn’t all roses and rainbows. That said, you can do some things to speed up your recovery if you understand the benefits of the procedure that was done. In my case (and as is often the case) you will get to do the procedure laproscopically. This provides far less disturbance of the tissues and muscle than does an open operation. The laproscope places a mesh on the inside of the cavity that than gets sutured in place and held in place by your own natural intra abdominal pressure. As long as you can deal with a bit of the post surgical discomfort you can be assured that you won’t damage the repair if you develop some normal pressure from the inside out. This allowed me to start some gentle core strengthening exercises like posterior pelvic tilts, modified planks on knees and elbows, and isometric contractions. As soon as I was able to tolerate more work as the pain and discomfort subsided, I moved onto harder and harder ab exercises. I refrained from lifting heavy weights during the initial 4 weeks or so since I didn’t want to compensate on the non operative side and wind up doing damage to it. I wasn’t so worried about the side that had been repaired. The most difficult thing to do was hang from a bar and this took the longest to return to full strength. One need only to try and do this and keep their body still to realize just how much of a demand this places on the abs and the very muscles that have been disrupted in order to perform the surgery. Exercise After Weight Loss Surgery - Body Weight Exercises | Blossom Bariatrics | Las Vegas Welcome to Blossom Bodies. Today we have two really amazing guest trainers with us, Kristen and Tiff from Riot Conditioning. They're here to show you some really great tips. Today we're going to talk about body weight exercises and these are exercises you do with one piece of equipment--and that's you! Your body is the resistance. You can do these anywhere. So we're going to start with a push up. There's different options that we have. We can use a chair, a bench. First we're going to start with the chair. With your legs straight, bring in the body weight down to the chair--the chest down to the chair, or you can also just come to the knees. Push that chair away, hands wide, chest down, head stays up, aligned with the spine. We're just going to push up. We're going to do ten of those, three sets. Okay the next exercise is...we'll start with a crunch. Go ahead and sit down on the ground, knees up high, heels flat on the floor. You can have hands across your chest or behind your head. Now with a crunch you want to come up, chin up to the sky, make sure those shoulder blades come off the ground, squeezing your abdomen. Exhale as you come up and squeeze. Inhale as you let go. (Music plays) If you're ready, come up to a full sit up. Bring it up, whole body up, all the way forward. Come all the way down, shoulder blades down, all the way up, and back down. Again, you'll go for 10 reps, three times. The next exercise we have dips. You can find a bench, chair, anything you have around the house. Keep your feet close to you for support. You're going to go ahead and bend those elbows, making sure they're not coming out, trying to keep them pointed back the entire exercise. You go down to a 90 degree angle and press up. Your body weight is your resistance. If needed, use that foot to help get you back up. Again, go for ten to twelve reps, for three times. Those are our body weight exercises. Well here is a breif information about my story: All my life I have been obese even as a baby I was overweighted. I hated my life it was like hell as people used to mock me for being fat or feel pity for me. I just wished I could disappear from this world. I was obsessed with parkour and free running. when I started Learning them I ended up with a dislocated shoulder and I had to do a surgery on my right knee (torn meniscus) . The doctor said that I have to lose weight as these injuries happened because of overloading on joints, so I tried to lose weight many times but I failed every time. I started to give up hope and I started to surrender to the idea that it is my destiny to stay obese. But one day, I looked to myself in the mirror and asked myself "are you satisfied with yourself?" and then I started crying and said "no". so I started to take care of my diet of course I failed again but the difference is this time I never gave up, It was so hard but where there's a will there's a way.I started with low intensity cardio and started to take it step by step till I was able to finish the insanity challenge. I also saw the inspiring transformation of lazar novovic, chris , dusan so I decided to start calisthenics and build my body naturally with only my body weight. so here I am standing today apart from the day I started calisthenics. At the beginning of the journey I was 122 kg (270 lbs) now I am 82 kg (180 lbs). well I am suffering from excessive skin especially around my belly, It may look terrible but I take it as token of my hard work. I hope I could inspire and motivate others and the journey is still not over. A motivational video that follows Anna Myers as she lost 170lbs; transforming herself from Class III morbid obesity to athlete. This video is a testament of the human drive and ability to change your life no matter where you are. Anna Myers had tried everything to lose weight. Weight loss shakes, high fat diets, low fat diets, countless nationally recognized weight loss diets, vegetarianism, pre-packaged meal plans, and in desperation even starving herself for days. Many of the surgeries we perform as orthopaedic surgeons involve placing implants, whether they are screws, plates, nails, or suture anchors. In this Ask Dr. Geier video, I discuss whether the hardware should be removed routinely after a very common orthopaedic surgery – surgery to fix an ankle fracture. Vikas writes: I broke my right ankle a year ago while playing football. Can I play football while there’s a plate still in? Or should I remove it and then play? After most surgeries, the hardware causes little trouble to the patient. Because people have little fat or muscle over the bones around the ankle, many people can feel the screws there with sports and exercise. If you do have discomfort, removing the screws or plate and screws can relieve that pain. It does take time to recover from the second surgery and return to play. There are situations where orthopaedic surgeons do remove the hardware. Complications such as infection or nonunion (the fracture doesn’t heal) that we would likely remove the hardware from the ankle.
