How aircraft flaps work
A whiteboard explanation of the theory behind lift and flaps in what is the first of a series that attempts to explain the science behind the technology we use in our RC planes. I've tentatively called this series "Theory Thursday" but it might also be Technical Tuesday or Whiteboard Wednesday -- you tell me :-) And if you've got ideas for new theory videos, mention them in the comments below. Also, if you have any questions about this video, ask-away and I'll do my best to answer them.

Remove cat before flight
Un baptême de routine, jusqu'à ce que...de l'importance de regarder dans les ailes avant chaque vol. Pour info le chat va très bien, il continue avec application son rôle de mascotte du club Au club ULM 16-34 de Kourou, Guyane Française A standard flight until... i still don't know if it got in after the pre flight check or if i missed it. The cat is doing well, she is still our mascot. Edit : Ok some details : - the cat was INSIDE the wing, not on it. she was actually pretty safe in there, the danger was if she wanted to get down to reach us.. - i was the pilote, the woman was on her first flight as a passenger. she smile and giggle a lot, well because that's what flying does to people sometime. -i told her not to reach for the cat. i told her not to move at all actually. i trusted the cat to not move if we didn't try to reach for her. -you can see me smile shortly before landing. I was pretty assured by then that the cat wouldn't move and there was a relieve of tension; and the radio exchange with the control tower was kinda hilarious, i couldn't contain a smile. -cat is a female. -the flight was normally 20minutes long To use this video in a commercial player or in broadcasts, please email licensing@storyful.com

Airflow across a wing
"It is often said that the lift on a wing is generated because the flow moving over the top surface has a longer distance to travel and therefore needs to go faster. This common explanation is actually wrong." Here, aerodynamics expert Professor Holger Babinsky from the University of Cambridge's Department of Engineering debunks a popular, yet misleading, explanation of how wings lift. For more information, read the accompanying story published by the University of Cambridge http://www.cam.ac.uk/research/news/how-wings-really-work/

Flight funny
Fun Flight Facts for Kids Check out our fun flight facts for kids and learn how planes fly as well as interesting information about aviation history, the Wright Brothers, animals that fly and much more. Find out about supersonic flight, the forces involved with flying, lift created by an airfoil, airships and even flying fish! Read on and enjoy all our cool facts related to the world of flight. ------------------------------- While birds have been flying for millions of years, it's something relatively new to humans and we rely on some important scientific principles to achieve it. Beginning with simple kites, humans have moved on to develop gliders, airships, helicopters, commercial planes and even supersonic flight. Supersonic flight (breaking the sound barrier) is achieved when an object travels at a speed faster than sound (1235kph, 768mph). The Wright Brothers, Orville and Wilbur, were American aviation pioneers who created the first successful airplane, thanks in part to their invention of 3-axis control, enabling the pilot to effectively control the plane. While a number of flight pioneers were working on their own powered flight at the time (including New Zealand's Richard Pearse) the Wright Brothers are widely credited with the first controlled and sustained human flight on December 17, 1903. Planes have wings that feature an airfoil (aerofoil) shape, this is important as it helps overcome the effect of gravity pulling down on the plane. The wing creates lift as it moves through the air, a process that can be explained by Bernoulli's principle. Because of the airfoil shape, air flows faster over the top than the bottom, creating higher pressure underneath the wing which then pushes the plane up through the lower air pressure. Disturbed air and friction create drag as the plane moves forward, slowing it down. An engine provides thrust to move the plane forward at a speed great enough to overcome drag and allow the wings to create the lift necessary to fly. Airships and blimps are lighter than air and use buoyancy for flight. They are typically filled with gas (such as helium) that is less dense than the surrounding atmosphere. The only living things capable of powered flight are insects, birds and bats. While some can glide, bats are the only mammals that can achieve sustained level flight. Flying fish have been known to glide for hundreds of metres thanks to enlarged fins that act like wings. Check out this cool flying fish video! And if you really want to be amazed check out a gliding snake in action! For more on flight check out our cool flight lesson plans or try making a parachute.

Airplane Crash In-Cockpit Footage: Stinson 108-3
Glenn Pew for AVweb.com. Video of a plane crash as it was experienced from the right seat, inside the cockpit. The accident took place on Saturday June 30, 2012 near Bruce Meadows airstrip, not far from Stanley, Idaho. At the time of this report, information was preliminary and subject to change, but some had been collected by the NTSB. The aircraft is a Stinson model 108-3, a 165 horsepower single-engine high-wing propeller-driven plane capable of carrying four, plus full fuel, and light baggage. All four occupants survived the crash with the pilot suffering the worst injury. The cause of the crash is yet undetermined, but an aircraft's performance is dependent, among other things, on the density of the air it moves through. The pilot appears to have faced "high density altitude" conditions which degrade an aircraft's takeoff and climb performance. New Private Pilot Helicopter Online Ground School Training
Helicopter Ground School: https://HelicopterGround.com Hello. I'm Kenny Keller with Helicopter Online Ground School and I'm excited to announce this week, the middle of May 2016, we're introducing a brand new Private Pilot section. We're taking the training that we've had that was formally based on the Practical Test Standards and we've designed a new course of training that's more specific as far as aerodynamics, navigation, cross country, so on and so forth. I think a lot of you people are going to like it. First of all I'm going to show you how we've divided them up. You're in Introduction now. Number 2. Aerodynamics of Flight. 3. Helicopter Flight Controls. 4. Helicopter's Components, Sections and Systems, RotorCraft Flight Manual, Weight and Balance, Helicopter Performance, Ground and Flight Preparations. Lesson 9. Basic Flight Maneuvers. Lesson 10. Advanced Flight Maneuvers. Lesson 11. All About Autorotations. Lesson 12. Emergency Operations and Helicopter Hazards. Lesson 13. Attitude Instrument Flying. Lesson 14. Night Operations. Lesson 15. Effective Aeronautical Decision Making. Lesson 16. Air Space. 17. Navigation. 18. Weather. 19. Aeromedical and then the stuff that's geared specifically for the Practical Test Standards is now in one section. I'm really excited about this because a lot of members over the years have said, "You know, well ..." They like the visual modules and that was random. Then I went with the Practical Test Standards and it was better, but still the way the PTS is set up, the PTS does kind of jump around and that's one reason they're moving to what they call the ACS, the Airman Certification Standards. After speaking recently with a spokesman from the FAA or a representative of the FAA, he said it's probably going to be 2 years before the ACS comes out for helicopters. They're working on the fixed wing side of it now but the helicopter part is not ready. I was kind of waiting around to see what happened with the ACS and then after I found out, well, it's not going to be probably available for 2 more years for helicopters, I thought, "Okay, for the people that wanted more organization, I'm going to go ahead and get with it." I basically used several different syllabuses that I looked at and came up with one that I liked, that made sense. It's going to be following Helicopter Flying Handbook, which is our helicopter bible and what you should be working with. Let's take a look at the Aerodynamic section specifically because this is one ... I know that over the years when I've met with members or talked to them online or through e-mail or on the phone whichever the case may be, Aerodynamics is the one that they always bring up. When you follow the PTS the Aerodynamics jump around to those 10 sections of the PTS. People want to ... A lot of times, they want to go through Aerodynamics all at one shot so here we go. As of right now we have drag, lift, the lift equation, air foil, translating tendency, pendular action, coning, coriolis effect, gyroscopic precession, air flow and forward flight, the symmetry of lift, the symmetry of lift definition, effective tranlational lift and then we're going to have one more section just on the aerodynamics of autorotation. That's a look at our new Private Pilot Helicopter Ground School, May 2016. New Private Pilot Helicopter Online Ground School Training. We do have a new system now within Online Ground School that we can e-mail direct members of any section in there which is nice, but I also think doing more live events and getting people to interact is going to be another great way to interact and keep people ... A jet landing. They're taking off ... To keep people involved and answer questions and a lot of people know about updates. In conclusion, any questions, put them in the box below. I'll be answering these questions and all week we're going to be uploading content. Right now we have ... Everything that was in the PTS is now moved over and we have new content, never seen content being added and we're also going to be producing some other new stuff this week. A lot of really cool stuff going on. I think people are going to love this.
