Watch more How to Fly a Plane videos: http://www.howcast.com/videos/453011-How-to-Fly-a-Plane-with-Josh-Kallenberg-Flying-Lessons Hi, my name is Josh Kallenberg and I'm here at the Van Nuys Airport in Los Angeles, California. I've been flying professionally for about 13 years, and now I have the pleasure of flying this Gulfstream G450 which is a lot of fun and exciting. Why do I enjoy flying? There's a challenge. One of the reasons that I got into flying was because I wanted to impress the girls. Did it? Not really. You know, I've tried several different types of flying. Some as aerobatics, and that's some of my favorite -- just don't tell my mom that. What's the difference between a pilot and a jet engine? The jet engine stops whining after it lands. As a pilot you'll realize one of the perks is that you get to eat gourmet meals at gourmet restaurants, such as this bar -- this is as good as it gets. This is the Autobot symbol. Actually, this airplane is going to be in the new Transformers 3 movie. You know, you get a sense of freedom. I can climb, I can descend, I can go over there, or here -- and that's kinda cool too. You feel free. And I think that there's not many things you can do in life that give you that feeling.

Today´s topic is one of the most ask passenger question, "Can a passenger land a plane?". There are so many rumours about this question, it´s just not true. So a few facts. My friend Carolin, has no connection to the aviation world besides from flying to holiday once in a while, obviously as a passenger. Now as soon as she sat down, the hardest part was establishing a communication between her and me, the ATC controller. Carolin was totally overwhelmed with all the switches and buttons, that it took nearly 20 minutes to find the push to talk button. In a real-life situation, if a plane does not respond within 20 minutes, fighter jets will be on their way intercepting the aeroplane as it causes a potential threat to national security, depending which land you´re flying across. Once communication was established, I had to give her instructions on how to set up the approach phase for an automatic landing, better known as AUTOLAND procedure. The AUTOLAND allows pilots to perform a fully automated landing in bad visual conditions, known as CAT3 approaches. More about that in future videos. Once the approach set up was completed, I had to give her instructions to familiarize with important levers and switches, such as the landing gear lever, the flaps, flight control computer and much more. Later I guided her via radar vectors towards the airport, constantly descending and reducing the speed accordingly. But see for yourself. My opinion if a passenger can land a plane. I´ll be honest with you! It´s impossible! We needed three attempts to just establish basic communication and Carolin accidentally brought the aircraft into a stall. Don´t ask how! And she was pretty nervous, although she knew it was a simulator. Imagine the anxiety in a real plane!? I know that there are many videos out there where apparently the passenger landed the plane, but all of the passengers had some kind of flying background. And the likelihood of both pilots being incapacitated is very unlikely. Fun Flight Facts for Kids Check out our fun flight facts for kids and learn how planes fly as well as interesting information about aviation history, the Wright Brothers, animals that fly and much more. Find out about supersonic flight, the forces involved with flying, lift created by an airfoil, airships and even flying fish! Read on and enjoy all our cool facts related to the world of flight. ------------------------------- While birds have been flying for millions of years, it's something relatively new to humans and we rely on some important scientific principles to achieve it. Beginning with simple kites, humans have moved on to develop gliders, airships, helicopters, commercial planes and even supersonic flight. Supersonic flight (breaking the sound barrier) is achieved when an object travels at a speed faster than sound (1235kph, 768mph). The Wright Brothers, Orville and Wilbur, were American aviation pioneers who created the first successful airplane, thanks in part to their invention of 3-axis control, enabling the pilot to effectively control the plane. While a number of flight pioneers were working on their own powered flight at the time (including New Zealand's Richard Pearse) the Wright Brothers are widely credited with the first controlled and sustained human flight on December 17, 1903. Planes have wings that feature an airfoil (aerofoil) shape, this is important as it helps overcome the effect of gravity pulling down on the plane. The wing creates lift as it moves through the air, a process that can be explained by Bernoulli's principle. Because of the airfoil shape, air flows faster over the top than the bottom, creating higher pressure underneath the wing which then pushes the plane up through the lower air pressure. Disturbed air and friction create drag as the plane moves forward, slowing it down. An engine provides thrust to move the plane forward at a speed great enough to overcome drag and allow the wings to create the lift necessary to fly. Airships and blimps are lighter than air and use buoyancy for flight. They are typically filled with gas (such as helium) that is less dense than the surrounding atmosphere. The only living things capable of powered flight are insects, birds and bats. While some can glide, bats are the only mammals that can achieve sustained level flight. Flying fish have been known to glide for hundreds of metres thanks to enlarged fins that act like wings. Check out this cool flying fish video! And if you really want to be amazed check out a gliding snake in action! For more on flight check out our cool flight lesson plans or try making a parachute.

This CFD ANSYS tutorial demonstrates how to run an aerodynamic simulation on an airplane wing, it is a basic simulation where the pressure based solver is used with incompressible air as a fluid. Additionally, this simulation will show you how to calculate the drag and lift forces on the wing. There is a mistake I have done when I tried to calculate the lift force by choosing the Y- direction instead of the Z direction.

Today I put everything I have learned into practice and attempt confined area landings and take-offs. Any unfamiliar or obstructed landing zone can be considered a confined area as the methodology is the same. A reconnaissance or ‘recce’ of the landing zone should be conducted prior to approach. This is done by flying a circle (typically 1-2nm in diameter, but is dictated by the terrain) at 500ft AGL with the landing zone off the pilot side of the helicopter at about 50 knots. This allows an unobstructed view of the area without committing to a potentially dangerous landing. The recce procedure is PSWATP, as follows: P: Power check. Confirm maximum power is available as shown on the MAP limit chart by increasing collective. Rotor/engine RPM should remain steady when this power level is held. Confirm minimum power required for flight is available by flying straight and level at BROC speed (53KIAS). Subtract minimum MAP from max MAP. 6” difference allows for out of ground effect hover, 5” in ground effect, 4” zero-zero landing, 3” run-on landing. 6”+ will be required for a confined area landing. S: Area Shape, Size, Shadows (treat as obstacles), Slope direction, Surface condition, Sun direction, Surroundings, Stock (animals or people) W: Wind direction, Wires (look for poles/towers not wires themselves) A: Approach & Departure, do the above factors determine a particular direction for each? Landing directly into wind may be less safe than another approach with a slight headwind component due to LZ conditions. Abort point (use a landmark to determine whether or not to abort, well before you commit to the landing by dropping too low and slow) T: Termination point should be 2/3rds the way into the clearing to allow ample room for tail boom and safety margin for rotor to the front. P: Plan. Using the above factors, plan your approach, abort point, landing and departure from the LZ. Everything should be clear before committing. Execute the plan, if things do not go to plan, you can always abort and go around. When attempting the landing, the exact approach and departure will vary depending on the nature of the LZ, however in the bush clearings attempted in this lesson the logical approach was a double-angle steep landing. Put simply, you approach at one angle and then once you clear a known landmark you descend at a steeper angle until landing. The departure is the reverse of this, although the initial angle is vertical. As I found out, there wasn’t enough available power for a completely vertical takeoff due to full fuel tanks and two PoB (and a little overcontrolling on my part). This was solved by ‘bouncing’ off of the ground-effect cushion and gaining translational lift earlier on in the climb.
