First plan sales were in 2001. Intended for first time buiders as well as first time pilots, the UltraCruiser is an easy to build and even easier to fly aircraft. The design can be built straight from plans up to, and including a full kit. The kit includes predrilled laser cut components. All parts are formed prebent, or welded. Wheels, tires, brakes, harness, and even the seat cushion is included. Wing Spar is pre-assembled. The kit is very complete. Everthing is included to complete the aircraft less the engine, prop, spinner, and instruments. Grand Spree R an all metal low wing ultralight aircraft.

http://www.ultralightnews.com -- While at Airventure in I came across an ultralight on display in the Ultralight area across from the Red Barn. The plane was called the Grand Spree and was designed and build by Max Bennett. It took Max over a year to build the Grand Spree, in his living room. Max has built several aircraft in the past including a Lazair and Zenair CH 701. Both of these aircraft use metal in their construction, so since Max was familiar with this type of construction he decided to build The Grand Spree in metal. During the design process Max was more concerned with the look of the aircraft than its performance. Thus he designed the Grand Spree to be as showstopper! While Max knew how to work with metal he did not have the necessary skills to design and test I wing. To overcome this problem he decided to purchase a set of plans for the wing assembly of a Hummel UltraCruiser. The UltraCruiser uses and all metal low wing in a tractor configuration and the speed and weight of an UltraCruiser are very close to that of the Grand Spree. To get the look that he wanted required the molding of approximately 50 fiberglass parts. He also had to design and fabricate a motor mount for the 30 hp twin cylinder Kawasaki two-stroke engine and belt reduction system. The Murphy Aircraft Radical Design Philosphy It has been designed and built to be a true rugged STOL bush aircraft incorporating the best ideas and design practices of all the Murphy aircraft. When Darryl Murphy and Dick Hiscocks (lead aeronautical design engineer of the dehaviland Beaver, Otter, Twin Otter, etc) started the design for the Murphy Rebel the utmost importance was placed on ruggedness and STOL performance. The Murphy Aircraft Radical Usefulness was also a high priority. Over the years this philosophy was continued in the designs of the Murphy Elite, Maverick and Super Rebel line of aircraft. The Radical design continues this philosophy. Although tandem seat aircraft based on the original Piper Cub are very good performing aircraft, they do have a number of drawbacks. Many have reasonable useful load capabilities but when flying two up the space available for load carrying is very limited. This is definitely not a problem with the RADICAL. The side by side seating leaves a cavernous space behind the seats available for load carrying. The space is so large two can sleep comfortably on the double floor. No longer will your flying partner have to sit in the trunk. With the side by side seating they will be able to sit up front where the action is with full access to controls and instruments. Bede Corp, Bede Aircraft, BD-4, BD-6C experimental aircraft kits. Starting as a side project in Mr Bede's shop while the engineering department was occupied with other tasks, the BD-6 was designed and flown in the mid-1970’s. It was constructed with the same bolt- together angle method as the BD-4. The high wing, all-metal, single place, aircraft incorporated a Hirth engine (same engine utilized briefly for the BD-5) and a 2/1-belt reduction drive that applied all the functions of the BD-4 into a condensed single seat craft. The prototype had a cruising speed of 149 MPH and recorded over 150 flight hours with excellent results. Unfortunately in 1993, the prototype, was damaged in a flood in St. Louis, but was rebuilt after a short time.The BD-6 is still undergoing a painstaking restoration process. The BD-6 is closely related to the BD-17 in overall size and even incorporates some of the same parts, but features its own set of complexities that make this plane unique. The BD-6 plans are currently updated and all parts are available. There are two recommended engines, the 60 HP HKS or 80 HP Jabiru. Now Quick Build Time Estimates Updated to 350 hours Use of metal skins improves performance, reduces build times to as little as 350 hours, increases aircraft value.May 17, 2018—Wichita KS – The Chipper STOL, a two place EAB aircraft kit from Belite Enterprises, is now available with a metal wing option. This option substantially reduces build time, reduces drag, improves performance and will improve the resale value of Chippers. The metal wing option is offered for $1320. Application of the metal skins is bonded by the builder in a simple process which may be done in four hours per wing skin. The net weight difference adds 15 pounds to the aircraft. In comparison to conventional fabric, the builder will save several hundred hours of time. Build time estimates have been changed for Chipper. With metal skins, total build time is now estimated at 700 hours. With purchase of a Quick Build kit and by having Builder Assist install the skins, estimated build time is reduced to 350 hours. The FAA has certified the Quick Build kit as compliant with amateur build rules. Wiebe made comments about the utility and performance of Chipper: "Typical finished weight of a metal Chipper is 625 to 630 pounds with a Rotax engine and 21" tires. Useful load is greater than 600 pounds, and engines up to 120 HP may be used. With my upgraded Rotax, I'm cruising at about 92 knots with huge tundra tires and long Alaska main / tail gear @ 5.4 GPH. Furthermore, my Chipper is set up with nearly 50 gallons of usable fuel, allowing a remarkable 8 hour range. This has aided my flying into remote wilderness in northern Canada and Alaska," Wiebe continued. The first Chipper recently passed the 200 hour milestone on James' flight to Alaska. Subcontractors and suppliers are constantly under control as part of a permanent process which is strictly defined, within time intervals each one is verified trough the production chain. Parts, components and devices such as the engines and the propellers installed on our aircraft, are supplied by well-known companies of proven quality, such as TEVESO s.r.o., Franz Aircraft GmbH, WOODCOMP s.r.o. MT propellers GmbH, KASPAR AERO s.r.o.. All incoming components are strictly defined within quality standards. In the case of the internal upholstery of our aircraft this is in compliance with FAR 25.853, with the installation of fireproof materials and components. The testing and the maintenance departments are located right on the Airport LYKA – Kraljevo, not far from the production halls. The workshop is completely equipped for the installation of the power plant which is part of the last assembling step before flying. All types of tests, from the engine ground test to the complete flight tests, are conducted here. http://www.ultralightflyer.com – The M-19 is a single-place, high-wing, conventional fixed gear (taildragger) aircraft powered by the Volkswagen engine converted for aircraft use. Recommended horsepower is in the range of 50-60 HP. Any less than that will probably work, but will be borderline in performance. Any more than that will be extra weight and fuel consumption, and won't gain you much of value. The basic design does not include brakes, wing flaps, or trim. The Barnard M-19 "Flying Squirrel" is the sport pilot's airplane, an affordable, simple, reliable homebuilt airplane that brings with it a return to flying the way it was intended to be. Many other homebuilt and kit designs have made these same claims, but very few have delivered. This one does, and Marvin Barnard is the main reason why. The M-19 was conceived and designed by Marvin R. Barnard, a man who has managed to focus on the most basic of motivations for homebuilding: to create an airplane which can be built quickly and easily using basic materials and methods, at the lowest possible cost. Marvin built and tested the prototype, and flies it regularly. The M-19 was never intended to be a trophy winner in any category but one: SATISFACTION. Nobody has designed a new triplane since the end of WW1 so why not a modern light plane version using the latest technology and engines from the ultralight industry. We are not talking a pseudo copy of an old WW1 plane but a new light sport triplane using as much modern technology and materials as is practical and cost effective. What are the advantages and disadvantages of a triplane? Disadvantages; High drag from wing interference and lift loss from six wing tips. The extra work required to build six wings. Loss of visibility due to the location of the center and lower wings blocking the line of sight to the front and down. Advantages; The high aspect ratio of the wings allows an excellent rate of climb and a good glide ratio if the wing interference drag can be reduced. High roll rate from the short span wings. Good longitudinal stability due to the extra lift centers. Unusual and eye catching aircraft that will attract attention no matter where it is flown. How do we maximize the advantages and minimize the disadvantages? By utilizing a modern airfoil, narrow wing chord, lots of wing stagger and properly shaped wingtips we can reduce the interference drag and the tip loss. Create "quick build" wings using common wood working tools that most builders have on hand. The wings would be built much the same way as a model airplane. How about something much more affordable? A taildragger called Bearhawk has picked up accolades from AirVenture judges and owners appear very loyal. Sometimes those of us close to factory built Light-Sport Aircraft tend to forget about the homebuilt community. However, more pilots exercising the privileges of Sport Pilot are flying kit-built airplanes than ready-to-fly models, a trend that is likely to continue because a kit represents a lower cost option and one where the owner can more easily do all repair work. Let me clarify, though. Bearhawk is Sport Pilot eligible (using a term my longtime EAA friend, Ron Wagner, coined); it is technically not a Light-Sport. Bearhawk LSA made its debut at AirVenture two years ago as a prototype constructed by its designer, Bob Barrows. Recently a customer flew the first completed kit. Bearhawk Aircraft owner/builder Mark Goldberg completed the first Bearhawk LSA quick-build kit, N514AK, and flew it to AirVenture. The trip from Texas took 9.7 hours cruising at just under 100 mph while burning 4.5 gallons per hour. Portions of the flight were done at up to 118 mph consuming 6 gph Mark said. Goldberg's Bearhawk uses a Barrows-engineered 105-horsepower Continental Motors O-200 engine under the cowl. Following a four seat model, Bearhawk LSA is "a clean-sheet design with an all-new airfoil, developed by Harry Riblett," said Barrows. Construction is similar to other Bearhawk aircraft, with fuselage and tail surfaces of welded 4130 chromoly frames covered in fabric. The all aluminum, flush riveted wings are supported by a single strut. Bearhawk designs are popular for their solid performance and pleasant flight qualities. The designs are known for short field capability, gentle slow speed manners, yet manage reasonably high cruise speeds. The legions of folks buying Cubalike designs can consider Bearhawk and save a bundle while flying faster, not a bad combination. Bearhawk is available as a quick-build kit from the Austin, Texas company. Empty weight of Bearhawk LSA is 750+ pounds, depending on equipment an owner installs, yielding a useful load of 570 pounds. With 30-gallon tanks full of fuel, payload calculates to 390 pounds. Of course local flying can be done with less than that large amount of fuel; the 31-inch-wide cockpit will accommodate a couple big fellows in tandem seating (photo). As the airplane is designed for a maximum weight of 1,500 pounds, Bearhawk boasts an additional margin at the 1,320-pound LSA limit. A quick-build Bearhawk LSA with no welding required and wings completed to a significant extent — including full riveting of the top skin, fuel tanks, and ailerons — costs $36,000. The welded steel frame has all tabs in place and is primed and painted. Even with exterior paint, avionics, and a new O-200 engine, a completed airplane may cost less than $80,000 or about half of a basic model CubCrafters. Other engine choices (65 to 120 horsepower is supported) can further hold down the expense, especially if you find a good used powerplant. Designer Troy Woodland — of SuperSTOL fame — said he almost got the new bird in the air before Oshkosh and will certainly do so in the next few weeks. It should be market ready by end of year. From some folks I’d find that a rather bold promise but Troy has a proven track record of getting flying machines to market. Up front, Troy mounted the Polini Thor 250 engine, which provides 37 horsepower at 7500 rpm. With an engine weight of barely over 40 pounds and the proper Part 103 airframe weight, this Thor engine should provide spirited performance. Fuel usage is very low; remember, these engines got popular on powered paragliders where the pilot carries engine and fuel on his or her back, so big gas tanks aren’t needed. Troy went with a boom tube to the tailplane to keep weight down and to maintain a genuine ultralight look. Readers who have followed this sector may recognize both the Capella Javelin and TEAM’s AirBike. (Also see this Zlin airplane.) The latter comparison is especially apt because this is one of those airplanes you get on rather than in. Pilots side astride the welded steel forward fuselage with their feet on the rudder pedals out in the breeze, although at a top allowed speed of 63 mph (55 knots), that breeze won’t be particularly windy. Troy indicated they have done all the analysis and much of the testing (wings are done even though they weren’t brought to Oshkosh). He is sure it will make the empty weight challenge of 254 pounds. Before it even flies, no price has been set, but with an engine price well under $4,000 and a simple airframe from a very established builder, it is reasonable to think Just 103 will be quite affordable. The UltraCruiser was designed by Morry Hummel as an all metal ultralight aircraft in 1998. First flights were in 2000. First aircraft plan sales were in 2001. The UltraCruiser was designed for first time kit builders as well as first time pilots, the UltraCruiser is an easy to build and even easier to fly aircraft. The design can be built straight from plans or is available in kit form. The kit includes predrilled laser cut components. All parts are formed pre-bent, or welded. Everthing is included to complete the aircraft less the engine, prop, spinner, and instruments. The Ultra Cruiser can be built from plans, or from kit. Building times are reported to be between 320 and 600 hours depending on what kit the builder is building. The Hummel Ultracruiser can be built and flown under FAR Part 103 Ultralight Vehicles rules, and meets the maximum empty weight of 254 lbs, with a standard empty weight of 249 lb. The UltrCruiser features standard three axis controls with a center mounted stick, left hand throttle and rudder pedals. It comes in a taildragger configuration, with tri-gear option available The Ultra Cruiser has a cantilevered low wing, (meaning it has no struts), with a 25 foot wing span and 112 sq. ft. of wing area. The cabin width is 23.5 inch wide and is equipped with a windshield for wind and pilot protection but can be fitted with an enclosure for colder weather flying. The UltraCruiser is powered by VW four stroke engine conversions, ranging from 28 to 45 HP. The Legal Eagle which was designed by Leonard Milholland is single seat, high wing, ultralight aircraft first introduced to the U.S. market at Sun N Fun in 1998. The name Legal Eagle came about when Leonard weighted the plane and it came in at 10 lbs less than the 254 lbs weight limit for the U.S. - thus "this Eagle is legal became the "LEGAL EAGLE." The plane features a welded fuselage with an all wood wing, similar to that of a Mini Max, the tail section is aluminums tube using pop rivets and gussets. Controls are standard stick and rudder, with ailerons. The plane is powered by a "better half" VW engine. The plane cruises along at 53 mph, stalls at 19, and according to Leonard is "real responsive and a pleasure to fly." All of the control systems are located outside the fuselage and the wings are completely sealed to prevent "those creepy crawly things" from getting in. "The whole idea of this plane is to be economical - you can afford it if you want to do the work." The plans consist of a cover sheet with the specifications on it, 42 sheets of drawings, and a materials list. Leonard estimates building time to be about 6 months. The engine is unique in that it is not a "half VW" but rather uses a full case. Plans for both the Legal Eagle and the engine are also available. The design features a fuselage of welded 4130 steel tubing, mated to an all-wood wing made from spruce. The struts and tail surfaces are made from 6061 T6 aluminium tubing. The flying surfaces are covered with standard aircraft fabric covering materials. The rear fuselage is normally left as an open truss structure to save weight and to ensure that the aircraft does not exceed the FAR 103 maximum speed of 55 knots (102 km/h; 63 mph). Like the fuselage, the taildragger landing gear is sprung steel. The aircraft has been developed into several variants of the basic design including the XL version for larger pilots and a two seat ultralight trainer and Light-sport aircraft. The MVP or Most Versatile Plane is the latest entry into the ever expanding amphibious light sport aircraft market. The MVP does not put more features (and weight) on an already challenging, weight-restricted airplane instead the design required a paradigm shift from traditional thinking. This different approach is the key to understanding just how the factory is going to achieve the goals set for the MVP. In the simplest of terms, the MVP is not an amphibious airplane that has all of these new features added to it. Instead, it is a highly integrated collection of features, pieces and parts that happen to become an airplane. Once the old adage, “an airplane is 10,000 compromises flying in formation” had been fully abandoned, this new attitude begins to reveal amazing opportunities, synergies, and relationships. Ultimately, the new features become completely intertwined with the parts that make up the airplane. As a result the MVP delivers a diverse feature-set while also delivering a respectable useful load. Flanking both sides of the MVP are nose to tail catwalks that enable movement all over the MVP for on the water preflight of the engine, inspection of the tail and the wing’s aft mounted control surfaces. Or, one can simply access the aft fuselage to deploy and relax in a fitted hammock that stretches between the engine pylon and the tail. The MVP’s most compelling feature is that it transforms into a versatile floating platform. The canopy moves upwards and back on a 4-bar link to sit atop the engine pylon. This frees up the nose of the MVP to resemble the front of a classic bass-type fishing boat. With the canopy open, the MVP’s engine can be run so as to continue to shore or dock, or to motor along to the next cove or fishing spot. This configuration also enables a passenger to step up onto the forward deck to assist in docking and beaching duties. Excellent stability of the hull keeps the MVP relatively flat as both occupants move about. And to create the perfect fishing or observation perch, either seat can be repositioned onto a pedestal up on the forward deck. The Instrument panel is a self-contained pod that pivots up and out of the way, not only to help protect it from dripping swim suits and flip flops, but also to provide a way to create a larger flat deck. Four hinged folding panels (called the origami deck) stow atop the forward deck under the canopy and are able to be deployed in two halves to fully cover the seats of the cockpit, enabling a completely flat floor from the bow to the back of the baggage compartment. This floor is level whether floating on the water, or parked on level ground. This amazingly big surface on a relatively little airplane is just large enough for two people to stretch out and sleep. Deploying a fitted tent and inflating a fitted air mattress makes spending the night a delight. Traveling from marina to marina on a big adventure couldn’t be easier with the MVP’s on-the-water folding wings. Taxi up close and shut down the engine. Fold the wings, and propel the MVP towards the slip with use of an on-board trolling motor. Integrated within the bilge, is a useful bow thruster to help make docking a breeze. With all these features, one might expect there to be compromises made to the flight and handling qualities of the MVP. Nothing could be farther from the truth. The MVP should prove to be a top performer and a joy to fly in its class. The Fisher FP-202 Koala was designed by Mike Fisher and Wayne Ison in 1981-3 time frame. It was an early Ultralight that actually looked like an airplane - unique in the days of flying spiders made of tubing and sail cloth. Although designed for (US) part 103 Ultralight rules, very few current aircraft make weight as it is common for twin cylinder engines to be used. The single cylinder Zenoah 22hp with it's belt reduction drive engine is mounted behind the wing on the upper root tube and is movable back and forth to provide the proper C of G for heavier pilots. One of the best contenders is the Affordaplane - or 'A-Plane' as this sophisticated, yet ultra-simple ultralight is popularly called. The Affordaplane was introduced in 2001 as a back-to-basics, all aluminum, true three axis airplane that anyone could build, especially those on a tight budget. The design goals for this unique airplane were nostalgic looks (having incorporated the best elements of classic taildraggers such as the Cubs and Champs), ease of assembly, and performance that rivals more expensive ultralights. Safety was also paramount, and resulted in an airframe that surrounds the pilot through 360 degrees. A thirteen year perfect safety record backs up the claim that this is one safe, tough bird. The A-Plane's fuselage structure is based on immensely strong two-inch square tubes, similar to many gyroplanes. A technique known as 'match-hole' drilling is used to join the parts. Cut, drill, and bolt, to get a perfect fit. Many builders complete their airframe in a single weekend, an unheard of achievement in airplane construction! At 5' high, the A-Plane is 17'3" long with a 27.5' wing span. The wing features full span ailerons, for perfect control even during strong crosswinds, that would ground other ultralights. Weight is a legal 254 pounds with a gross weight of 540 pounds. This airplane can easily accommodate 6' plus pilots that weigh up to 240 pounds. Controls are standard three-axis stick and rudder with full span ailerons. The flight envelope was designed to be ultralight legal in accordance with FAR Part 103. Cruise is around 60 mph with a vne of 75 mph. Stall meets the 27 mph or lower minimum. Takeoffs are between 45 to 50 mph and and landing speeds come in around 28 to 30 mph. Climb rates average 1000 feet per minute. Engines recommended in the plans are in the 35 to 45 hp range. One increasingly popular choice is the 1/2 Volkswagen engine. Other motors such as the Kawasaki 440 are also a good choice. Plans for the Affordaplane are very complete, and have been recently revised and updated. http://www.ultralightflyer.com – Even before Continental Motors took over the former ECi, that company’s Titan engine has been turning heads. CubCrafters was first to this party, installing the 180-horsepower engine on their Cubalike LSA, demonstrating very short takeoff rolls before climbing steeply. Since then, quite a few other producers have embraced the potent engine and more are coming. This development is sufficiently interesting that I am at work on an article about three “divisions” of powerplants for LSA, light kits, and ultralights. However, all other users of the Titan are unlike Just Aircraft’s SuperSTOL, which itself has turned many a head at airshow demonstrations. SuperSTOL was able to rivet pilots’ attention when it performed with the 100-horsepower Rotax 912, so imagine the neck-snapping twists that will occur when people get a chance to see how this moveable-slats airplane on tall, telescoping gear performs with 180 horses doing the pulling. The good news is, you don’t need to wait. You can get a relatively unique aft-facing, landing gear view of SuperSTOL rocketing off its factory airstrip at the end of this article. I’ll bet you enjoy that! Just Aircraft reported they started flight tests with the Titan OX-340 engine on their stretched SuperSTOL XL. “Due to a redesigned crankshaft, the Titan develops 180 horsepower with elevated torque levels,” said James Ball, a principal of Engine Components, International or ECi. “Essentially, the engine started out as a 160 horsepower Lycoming, but ECi reconfigured the engine to have a larger displacement resulting in more power.” In 2015, Continental Motors announced they expanded more deeply into the Experimental and LSA sectors with the purchase of ECi, a San Antonio, Texas-based manufacturer of FAA-approved engine parts. The deal provided Continental with a strong foothold in the light aircraft market with the ECi’s Titan line of engines including the X320, X340 and X370 models, all of which are based on Lycoming type designs. While Continental already enjoyed a solid presence in LSA and light kits with their O-200 line, Titan adds a very powerful engine choice that satiates the desire of pilots for more thrust. It’s no small irony that one U.S. icon now offers engines based on another American engine icon, Lycoming. Full disclosure: Continental is owned by China’s AVIC. Just Aircraft considers the Titan a good option for the SuperSTOL. “It’s premature to discuss performance numbers,” said XL designer Troy Woodland (seen in the lead photo doing what he does so well at airshows). However, Troy is quick to add, “But there clearly is an improvement in the takeoff roll and rate of climb. We brought our newest SuperSTOL to Sebring 2016 on a trailer to introduce the Titan and the response was very positive and enthusiastic. Since then, we’ve started flying it and we’re pleased with the results.” As is often the case, Troy is being a bit laid-back and modest, as the video below testifies. By Dan Johnson, The big summer celebration of flight has ended. I have more info from AirVenture 2015 and next I plan a summary article. A preview includes the most positive prognosis from industry players I have seen in recent years; strong sales reported by several producers; several interesting developments or benchmarks; and a wonderful week of weather as icing on the cake. My video partner and I put in long days to secure perhaps 30 or more new videos including many on the freshest topics in light aviation. The Shiniest Part 103 ... We shot a video interview on the line of Hummel Aviation light aircraft, including two Part 103 models and one Experimental Amateur Built version. Toward the end of the week, one that had been sheltered in a tent on one end of the sprawling AirVenture grounds was hand towed to the Ultralight Area — called the Fun Fly Zone — so people could see this mirror-finish (highly polished aluminum) UltraCruiser in the air. You cannot imagine the effort needed to make aluminum gleam like this effort by Steve Cole. The gleaming example in the nearby photos was built by Steve Cole from Indianapolis over a three year and eight month period, from plans. It meets all the Part 103 parameters — empty weight of 254 pounds; 5 gallons of fuel; 55-knot (63 mph) cruise; 24-knot stall — yet can climb enthusiastically at 1,000 fpm using its half-VW 45-horsepower engine from Scott Casler. The four stroke powerplant burns only 1.7 gallons an hour. For those a bit less ambitious or skilled than Steve, kits are also available and all models boast truly affordable prices. You may not be able to make yours look like Scott's UltraCruiser, but certainly here is a line of airplanes for those on tighter budgets, and isn't she a pretty thing that still requires no pilot license, no medical, no N-numbers, and a very simple set of rules that fit on a single sheet of paper. UltraCruiser is a Part 103 legal all-metal ultralight, although the company notes that the trigear version will be too heavy to qualify as a 103 as is a model with a full canopy. "UltraCruiser is an easy to build and even easier to fly aircraft," stated Hummel Aviation. The design can be built straight from plans up to, and including a full kit. The kit includes predrilled laser cut components. All parts are formed or welded for you. Wheels, tires, brakes, harness, and even the seat cushion is included. The kit is very complete. Everything is included to complete the aircraft less the engine, prop, spinner, and instruments. "The complete set of plans contains 26 large drawings with all bulkheads, wing ribs and skins [depicted in actual, full] size. A 30-page step by step manual is very complete. Dan Johnson talks to Greg Westberry of Westberry Manufacturing about the Thatcher CX -- 4 single seat experimental light sport aircraft and the soon to be released CX 5, during the EAA Sun N Fun convention held at Linder Regional Airport in Lakeland Florida. Greg is producing kits for the Thatcher CX 4. He is also preparing kits for the Thatcher CX 5 a tandem seating two seat experimental aircraft. The kits that Greg is producing are manufactured using CNC equipment, with matched hole drilling for easy parts alignment. This type of building process means that all of the holes are predrilled and all of the metal comes pre-bent. This means no jigs are needed to build the aircraft as the parts act as the jigs when they are clecoed together. Building from plans using raw materials will take between 900 and 1000 hours to complete. Building from kits will cut this building time to more than half. The Thatcher line of aircraft were been designed by Dave Thatcher for first time homebuilders, with no special tools or knowledge required. Dave aircraft mechanic, designer and builder is in his 80's and has been involved in aviation since his youth. Both the Thatcher CX 4 and CX 5 are all metal aircraft powered by Volkswagen aircraft engine conversions. Currently there are over 40 CX 4 aircraft flying with approximately another 50 in various stages of completion. This started as a "Fisher Avenger V" and was built from a set of plans from Fisher Flying Products. I've made many modifications from what the plans outline; what you see here incorporates those changes. The engine is a HKS 700E, a 60 HP air and oil cooled four stroke. I believe this is the first HKS installed in a Fisher aircraft. It's been an excellent match to this airframe. Building an airplane just takes common sense, patience and perseverance. In 1989 it purchased the design rights, manufacturing rights, and tooling for the Ag Master from Jack Hutchison of Hutchison aircraft. They then renamed the plane, the AeroMaster. The AeroMaster is a very unique aircraft in that it is designed to be a very rugged and affordable spray plane for farmers. In fact, I had the opportunity to visit Louisiana and fly the AeroMaster. Powered by a Rotax 582 65 hp engine, loaded with chemical the aircraft jumped off the ground in less than 250 feet. Climb rate was well over 700 ft./m, and cruise speed came in at 75 mph. According to the manufacturer the plane will pay for itself in less than four years, when compared to having a commercial sprayer operator come in and spray your property. The aircraft is constructed of 4130 chromoly steel tubing, uses aluminum ladder style construction in the wings, which are covered in Dacron sailcloth. The plane is 18'5" long, 7 feet high and has a wingspan of 28'7" with a total wing area of 145 ft. This gives the aircraft, a wing loading up 6.86 pounds per square foot. When flown without the spray equipment attached aircraft is quite capable of climbing at 1200 ft./m. Stall speed comes in at 25 mph. With the standard 10 gallon fuel tank. You have approximately 2 hours of flight time, or roughly 150 mile range. The spray tank is 30 gallons and has an emergency dump system. Optional toe pedal brakes provide for sure stops and allow a tighter turning radius. The flaps and ailerons and optional brakes allow the Mark III Xtra to be landed, stopped and maneuvered in very tight areas. GREAT VISIBILITY Additionally, the modifications made to the fuselage (an added 12" in length) resulted in more cockpit space, more baggage space, and more leg room. The cockpit ergonomics have been modified moving the instrument panel closer to the pilot. The larger windshield area adds even more to the already outstanding visibility offered by Kolb aircraft. Flaps are standard equipment and decrease the stall speed by 4-5 mph, but more importantly, allow for very steep descents without building up excessive airspeed. This is exactly what is needed to drop into a short field or for an emergency landing. This is welcome news to fans of the popular STOL (short take-off and landing) design who don’t have the time or inclination to build their own kit version of the airplane. The STOL CH 750 was originally offered as a factory-built S-LSA a number of years ago. Belite Chipper, Rotax 912 UL aircraft engine now available for Belite Aircraft Chipper. http://www.ultralightflyer.com – Chipper, Belite Aircraft’s Chipper two seat experimental aircraft taildragger. Belite Aircraft owner James Wiebe, indicated that the Chipper came about because he wanted to both take his wife flying in a Belite aircraft. The Belite Chipper utilizes the reliable Rotax 80HP 912UL engine, according to James Wiebe the Chipper has a top speed with full power of 100 mph, typical cruise speed is 90 mph at 75% power at an altitude of 5500 feet. Fuel burn at that power setting is just over 4 gallons per hour. The Belite Chipper empty weight is 505 lbs.with tundra tires and 28 gallon fuel tanks, which give the Chipper a range of 520 miles with 30 minute reserve. So using his years experience in building single seat affordable light planes he set his sights on "designing an aircraft with a high level of accuracy in parts production, and good repeatability in the build process. The Chipper’s components are produced from honeycomb aluminum sheets. A builder then trims the pre-cut pieces and assembles the plane by fastening them to pre-fabricated aluminum angles. Traditional fabric covering is used on the wings and tail surfaces. Belite uses the Oratex fabric covering system, which does not require painting, but other systems are also available. Belite estimates that a builder, sith some experience with fastening aluminum, can complete a Chipper in less than 700 hours. The airframe and sub kits include everything but the engine, FWF, instruments, and fuel tanks. The first flight for the Chipper was in June of 2017. At the E.A.A.'s Sun N Fun Convention held at Linder Regional Airport in Lakeland Florida Dan Johnson had the opportunity to talk to James Wiebe about his latest Part 103 legal ultralight aircraft design the Belite ProCub Lite. This is James's third ultralight design. The Belite series of aircraft were originally based on the Kitfox Lite, using a welded 4130 chromoly steel fuselage, with aluminum tube wing spars and wood ribs. To cub down on weight and building times James has modified the design to use an aluminum metal, rivet together fuselage. In the ProCub lite he has also introduced the use of CNC cut foam. The foam is primarily used in the wing, cabin area, fuselage and tail section. For added strength in the fuselage and tail section either aluminum channel or carbon fiber are added. In the wing two inch foam strips are sandwiched between aluminum ribs, connected to either aluminum or carbon fiber spars. Jim has also now offering a new engine model to the design. Easy Riser Foot Launched, Antique, Vintage, Ultralight Aircraft. The Ultralight Flyer takes a trip back in our vaults and comes up with a short clip on the Easy Riser foot launched, ultralight bi-plane. The Easy Riser, and John Moody the “Father of Ultralight Aviation” launched the ultralight movement when he flew an Easy Rise at the EAA Oshkosh Convention in 1978. Some people have inquired about buying Easy Riser plans. Plans for the Easy Riser are actually assembly instructions for the pre-fabricated parts and there are no detail drawing from which the parts can be made. In addition, some of the parts would be very difficult to make from scratch because complex tooling is required to make the parts. Bottom line, a person cannot build the Easy Riser from scratch using the plans provided in the kit.. Larry is only marketing an improved performance, foot-launched, Easy Riser kit as a glider. He had started developing a powered version but ultimately decided to terminate the project. Currently, we don't know anyone offering power packages or landing gear for the Easy Riser so anyone wishing to add power to the Easy Riser will need to design their own unit or copy a previous design. We would go so far as to suggest that a power unit mounting on the Easy should not weigh more than 35-40 pounds and have no more than 15-20 horsepower. We have found that the Hirth F-36 engine (a Solo 210 engine marketed by Hirth, about 15 hp) is an engine currently in production that, along with the 2.5:1 reduction unit and F-4 propeller has made a good power unit for the Easy. This package is used a lot by foot-launched powered parachutes. I use it on my Easy. You can watch me fly it by clicking on "air show video" (above left) then clicking on the Sussex air show movie. I also installed a compression release valve that I bought at a local chain saw store and that made starting the engine a lot easier. The Hirth F-36 engine can be purchased from POWER EQUIPMENT, 419-585-7002 and ask that the engine be equipped with a Tillotson HR carburetor. My 1979 Power Package plans ($30) and/or my 1979 Crosswind landing gear plans ($30) are available for purchase. The plans include detail part drawings and dimensions plus some pictures. They provide a good idea of where we beefed up the Easy Riser's structure, one way to mount whatever engine you decide to use, approximately where I put the thrust line, and one way to mount a landing gear. (Hint: the engine was rotated 2.5 degrees to compensate for the Mac 101's torque.) Plans are supplied on computer CD so add $10 if you want a printed copy of the plan set in addition to the CD. To order plans, send an email to me including your shipping address and I will have PayPal email an invoice to you which you can pay using a credit card (You do not need a PayPal account,). Of course, cash or check mailed to me will work too. A harness is not supplied with the kit but Larry is planning to sell a swing seat type harness as an accessory. The final design and price has not yet been determined. There is a hammock type seat available that works well on the Easy Riser. It was designed by Jack McCornack years ago and can now be obtained (while they last) from Dave Froble, 724-529-0450. Most readers know that carbon fiber is wonderful to combine strength with low weight but preparing the material for use on aircraft is an exacting effort. "We have now acquired a critical part of our production process, a Zund carbon fiber cutting center," said Paul. The Zund cutting machine can cut carbon fiber at an astonishing three feet per second, ink mark part numbers and bar codes to integrate individual pieces of carbon fiber into our inventory system to ensure full traceability and correct placement during laminating." He added that the Zund cutter has the capacity to produce parts for more than 100 aircraft per year. "We looked globally at other industry leaders and concluded that Zund was a stand out within composite manufacturing companies," reported Darryn Todd, VP of Composites for Vickers.
