Millions of people suffer from allergy symptoms everyday, which may include itchy eyes, a stuffy nose or a cough. Allergies arise when our body's defense systems react to common environmental exposures. Allergic reactions can cause such medical conditions as asthma, hay fever, sinusitis, reactions to stinging insects, food allergies and hives. These diseases then lead to lost work days, decreased school attendance and overall poor quality of life.

Allergy testing is a fairly safe and accurate procedure for both adults and children. Skin testing is done with plastic devices (no needles) testing for a variety of trees, grasses, weeds, molds and indoor allergies like dust mites, cats and dogs. On the other hand, skin testing is also done for more serious allergies caused by venom from stings of bees, wasps, fire ants, yellow jackets and other similar insects. Allergy Drops 101 - Austin Family Allergy & Asthma

02:14
Allergy drops are a form of immunotherapy commonly known as SLIT. The allergen containing drops are placed under the tongue on a daily basis. Immunotherapy is a very effective treatment as it actually works to make the immune system less allergic over time. The advantage with immunotherapy is you are truly treating the cause of the problem and not just working to relieve symptoms as medications commonly do. Board Certified Allergist Allen K. Lieberman, M.D. of Austin Family Allergy & Asthma, based in Austin, Texas gives an overview of Allergy Drops in this video.

Krystal was always worried when the phone rang that her son Eddie, age 10, was having a life-threatening allergy attack. It seemed almost daily that his allergies and asthma caused him to miss out on school, playing with friends or even just going outside. With the help of Loyola pediatric allergist Joyce Rabbat, MD, Eddie’s allergies no longer control his life. Since starting a series of allergy shots, he hasn’t had an attack in months and has even joined the lacrosse team, something that once would only have been a dream.
