My cat was coughing frequently, multiple times throughout the day for a few months. I got worried and took her to the vet. After an evaluation, it was determined that it was an allergy. I decided to change the wet cat food and started purchasing Iams exclusively. My Demi stopped coughing completely after a few days since I eliminated a cheaper cat food from her diet. Some ingredients in it must have been irritating her stomach and/or esophagus. It was a great lesson for me to spend more money on cat food than putting my cat under health risk now and in the future. Also the vet recommended to try mixing Claritin RediTabs 5 mg every 24 hours with her wet food, but I never really had to. Below is a link to Iams cat food that all of my 3 cats highly enjoy and that does not give any food allergies. Cat Allergies?, Try this Cat allergies in people are caused by a reaction to allergens produced cats most often when they lick their fur. Symptoms of an allergic reaction to cats include swollen, red, itchy, watery eyes; nasal congestion, itchy nose, sneezing, chronic sore throat or itchy throat, coughing, wheezing, asthma, hay fever, hives or rash on the face or chest, or itchy skin. Besides people taking allergy medications or allergy vaccinations and giving your cat a cat bath, sometimes in certain cases supplements and vitamins can help minimize a person's reaction to the dander from cats. Two main vitamins for cat allergies are vitamin C and vitamin D. Btw "Putin the Cat" is very likely an Blue Abyssinian cat and not a Russian Blue. I got him at Judy's Pet Rescue in Florida. His marking are very much like the Blue Abyssinian cat. Btw both Abyssinian cats and Russian Blue cats are considered more non-allergenic cats than most cats. Abyssinian cats are popular in the USA and are easier to find. They are also a very dog-like cat. "Putin the Cat" is very loyal and dog-like and that is actually a strong trait in the Abyssinian cat.

In case you love your pets and want to take good care of them and keep them healthy, pay attention to even the slightest changes in their behavior and take necessary measures immediately. For the sake of your pets and to protect them, keep an eye out for these 10 warning signs your pet needs help. There's a cough-like sound you might hear from time to time in smaller breeds of dogs and cats. This is called reverse sneezing, and it can indicate a slight throat irritation. It typically goes away on its own as well. But persistent coughing or reverse sneezing that lasts for more than 2 weeks is never a normal thing. It may be related to heart or lung disease, heartworm, bronchitis, pneumonia, or a tracheal collapse. Although a distended abdomen could simply be a sign that your pet has eaten too much, it can also indicate a digestive disorder, peritonitis, hormonal imbalance, or even internal bleeding. A swollen belly in dogs can also be a symptom of an extremely dangerous condition called Gastric-Volvulus. If left untreated, this problem can turn out fatal for a dog within hours. Chocolate is highly toxic for pets, usually resulting in theobromine poisoning. If you think your pet might’ve gotten into some chocolate, take it to the vet immediately. Dogs occasionally lick strange surfaces if they’re having some gastrointestinal issues. Licking behavior in cats is often provoked by mental health issues like boredom, anxiety, or OCD. If your cat or dog urinates too little or has troubles with the process, it may be suffering from bladder stones or a urinary tract infection. These problems are extremely painful and potentially life-threatening. If you notice your pet constantly scratching its ears to the point that the hair is coming off, take it to the vet right away. Laboratory testing will pinpoint if it’s parasites, hormonal issues, or some sort of yeast or fungal infection. Blood in the vomit is a major red flag that could indicate your pet has gulped down a sharp object that’s irritating its stomach. -Undiagnosed abnormal swelling in the stomach could potentially be life-threatening as it puts additional pressure on the chest cavity and makes it hard for your dog or cat to breathe. -Weakness or lethargy in dogs and cats usually accompanies all kinds of infections and serious diseases like diabetes, hypoglycemia, and anemia. -If your dog or cat is being anxious or looks scared for no reason and is constantly pacing, shaking, or whining, this can point to a range of health issues including mange, rabies, Cushing's disease, or heart problems. -If your dog or cat has lost 10% of its normal body weight, it could be a sign of a serious issue, such as a metabolic disorder, kidney or liver problems, neuromuscular disease, or cancer. -The most common reason why your cat or dog is excessively cleaning the same spot could be from pain or itching caused by fleas or an allergy. -If your pet is peeing more frequently than it used to, it can be a sign of diabetes. -If your cat or dog starts losing hair on or around its ears, this can be a sign of fleas, ticks, ear mites, or mange. -If your pet hasn’t touched their food for more than 24 hours, it can be a sign of stress, pain, or fever. PLEASE, if your cat has a cough like this, go see a vet. For Dakota, it was a cancerous tumor. Dakota, my 20 year old cat passed about a week after this video was taken. For a 20 year old cat, she was only in discomfort for the last couple days of her life. We miss her a lot. If your cat is coughing like this (and nothing comes up), please take it to the vet.

I think I was in 7th grade(about 12 years old), when my mom surprised me with Moe, I had asked for a cat for a long time. I picked him up and he attacked me, running off into the surrounding neighborhood with friends trying to catch him. Someone we knew had 100+ wild barn cat, Moe was the only one that didn't run and so the only one that could ever possibly be caught. My cat's condition was diagnosed by a veterinarian. This is a legitimate example of what a cat sounds like when suffering from a heart that has become too big for his chest. I created this video in which I talk about my cat's enlarged heart. I also include a couple a different videos that give you an idea of what it sounds like. This video is for informing people on this issue, and should not be used to make a diagnosis. Please take your pet to a veterinarian. There is treatment, but it is extensive and costs more than I can pay. I sincerely believe there aren't enough YouTube videos that provide examples of this. Many of the videos available are of cats with asthma, allergies, or something else. UPDATE: On December 23th 2015, shortly before 10pm Moe's heart gave out. It was quick and happened without warning. I heard him fall down a few stairs (at the time it sounded like he was running down them). A few moments later I heard a strange moan and went to find him laying on a step. He was wide eyed and gasping, but already far gone. I pulled him into my lap and softly told him not to worry, I was here and he could go, after that his body gave one last twitch and went limp. He was about 11-12 years old. I created this video with the YouTube Video Editor (https://www.youtube.com/editor)

Poor Casper. After rescuing this big boy from the outdoors (his previous owner's abandoned him), we found him doing this strange cough. It didn't look like a hairball cough and happened often enough that it concerned us. So we took this video to show our vet. And sure enough, this is the telltale sign of kitty asthma. They also took X-rays to verify. This is what a feline asthma attack looks and sounds like. During an asthma attack, a cat will put his head down near the ground and stretch his neck out (like a seal). This is not a hairball cough. Feline asthma affects approximately 1% of the american domestic feline population. Casper is now taking a steroid, Prednisolone, daily which has helped to decrease the frequency of his attacks. If you see your cat doing this, take him to the vet for a check-up.

Facts about cough in cat's Sometimes we don't care about our cats' coughs and sometimes we get scared, especially if it's a persistent symptom. In fact, coughing in cats can be a sign of different illnesses; it's a good idea to consult your vet. How does a cough occur? This is a reflex action motivated because the airways are irritated. This may be caused by bacterial or viral infection, foreign object ingestion, allergic reaction, feline asthma or collar pressure. Causes of coughing in cats Viruses Some viruses seriously affect the respiratory system of the small cats we have as pets. In addition to coughing, symptoms may include very greenish discharge from their nose, lack of appetite, watery eyes, fever, etc. Irritating effects Although sometimes there is no real cause of cough at home, it can be caused by different bacterial or viral agents. Tobacco smoke or the strong smell of a perfume could be one of these agents. Heart failure Although it may seem like a normal cough, without fever or runny nose, there may be a more serious cause. If the animal has heart failure, the cough will appear continuously. Presence of foreign objects Animals are very curious about things they find in the garden, in the park, etc. There are many things they eat and they cause a reaction in their body when trying to expel it; the difficulty of this expulsion can cause coughing. The collar is too tight It may be because of a mistake or a bad habit of the owner that the cat's collar is too tight. The pressure we put on their little neck will lead to a dry cough. Parasites and bacteria At some point in our cat's life, some parasites may settle on the wall of the cat's lung and cause it to cough. Among other things, this symptom will be due to difficulty breathing. Asthma When there is feline asthma, the cough will be accompanied by the animal's difficulty to breathe, as well as a general decay and an excessive feeling of exhaustion. Allergies Certain medicines, insect bites, and even food can cause allergies in our cat. Along with coughing, it will cause inflammation of the airways, skin, and very red, watery eyes.

Allergy is a body's hyperreactivity, an unusually high response of immunity to any effects. Initially, this reaction should be protective. But its severity is so high that the reaction itself becomes a damaging factor. Hyperreactivity of the body can be in the form of skin rashes, swelling of the mucous membrane, coughing and choking, allergic rhinoconjunctivitis. One of the manifestations of allergy in adults and children is an allergic cough. In this case, various substances (allergens) cause hyperreactivity on the part of the respiratory tract (trachea and bronchi). Allergen can become pollen flowering plants, wool cats, dogs and other animals, household dust, medicines. Allergic cough is a manifestation of some kind of disease. It can be eosinophilic bronchitis, a cough variant of bronchial asthma, asthmatic bronchitis, allergic tracheitis and some other diseases. To establish an accurate diagnosis, you need to see a doctor and get a check-up. Symptoms of an allergic cough Certain symptoms of an allergic cough help distinguish it from other types of cough. Allergic cough is characterized by the frequency of seizures after exposure to a certain allergen, frequent nocturnal episodes of coughing, almost complete absence of sputum (sputum). Often an allergic cough is accompanied by signs of bronchospasm, runny nose, conjunctivitis: shortness of breath, sensation of lack of air, copious rhinitis, lachrymation. The signs of an allergic cough in children are the same as in adults. To establish the diagnosis sometimes prescribed radiography of the chest, bronchoscopy, spirography. Symptoms of an allergic cough will be appreciated by the therapist, for further examination, it is sometimes necessary to consult an allergist-pulmonologist. Treatment of an allergic cough The first task in treating such a cough is to search for an allergen that provokes seizures of this condition. Here it is necessary to conduct an analysis of the situation in which most often there is a cough, its seasonality, the connection with the presence of domestic animals. In addition, specially designed skin tests will help in the diagnosis. Standard line of allergens used for this analysis, help to identify the specific cause of the cough. After the allergen is determined, it is necessary to isolate the patient from its effect. If it is a food product - you need to exclude it from the menu, if the animal - will have to give the pet in good hands. Sometimes exposure to an allergen is quite difficult to avoid. In this case, you should try to at least limit the impact of the harmful factor - several times a day to wash the nasopharynx with saline (sold at the pharmacy), use humidifiers. In the fight against allergies, it is recommended to follow a special diet that excludes the main provoking foods (citrus fruits, strawberries, fish, chicken, eggs, peanuts). Patients should refrain from smoking and avoid smoky premises. Also, you should limit contact with household chemicals and use only hypoallergenic cosmetics, cleaners. To treat allergic cough in adults and children, antihistamines are widely used. They can be taken in the form of tablets or injected. It is often necessary to prescribe sprays against allergies. They contain antihistamines, bronchodilators or hormones. Of course, all these drugs should be chosen for the patient specialist. Self-medication is dangerous and can lead to worsening of the condition. Treatment of an allergic cough in children is a particularly important task, because, ignoring the problem, it is possible to provoke a child's development of bronchial asthma.

Watch as Parents Magazine explains these baby care basics! Seasonal allergies may not kick in until your baby is around 1 year old, but more common allergies may be at play. Here are three clues that could mean your little one is suffering from baby allergies. Constant sneezing or sniffling and clear mucus without being accompanied by a fever are all telltale symptoms of allergies. Red and itchy eyes or skin could mean he has some eye or skin allergies. Sometimes these baby allergies target the eyes and skin before affecting the nose and lungs. The final sign to look out for is a family history of allergies. Parents who have allergies are more likely to pass them on to their babies, but their triggers may be different than yours or your spouse's. Closing windows on high pollen days and dusting and vacuuming regularly can reduce the amount of allergens in your home. If an air purifier with a hepa filter doesn't seem to be doing the trick, a trusted doctor can help you find the best treatment options based on your unique baby's needs! Identify the causes of your cat's sneezes with these tips. Step 1: Look for patterns in the cat's sneezing Look for patterns in the cat's sneezing. Does the cat sneeze, for example, only when it uses the litter box, or after you've cleaned the house? If so, the cause of the sneezing may be an irritant or allergen. Step 2: Consider common irritants or allergens Consider the most likely sources of the cat's sneezing. Common irritants or allergens may include cigarette smoke, perfume, pest sprays, cat litter, dust, and cleaning agents. Step 3: Consult a veterinarian Consult a veterinarian if there does not appear to be any pattern in the cat's sneezing, or the sneezing is continuous. Tip Many respiratory infections in cats can be prevented with vaccines. Step 4: Have the cat tested Let the vet take a culture specimen from the cat if there is a possibility of an infection. If there is an infection, the test will be able to determine whether it is bacterial, viral, or fungal. Once detected, your furry friend's irritated sinuses will be on their way to recovery. Did You Know? The respiratory system in cats plays an important role in regulation of temperature because felines do not sweat.

Carefully Selected Balance of Seven Herbs Stinging Nettle Leaf: (Urtica Dioica) This has been a medicinal plant popular with North American physicians throughout the nineteenth century and into the twentieth. Nettle contains about 20 different chemicals, including lectins, phenols, sterols, lignans, and histamines. Eyebright Herb: (Euphrasia stricta) For centuries, Eyebright has been used for its support of the normal inflammatory response and has antihistamine properties to address various problems relating to the mucous membranes of the eyes, ears, nose, throat, sinuses & bronchi. Licorice Root: (Glycyrrhiza glabra) One of the body's defense mechanisms to regulate allergic reactions is the release of cortisone or adrenalin (epinephrine) from the adrenal glands. Yerba Santa Leaf: (Eriodictyon californucum) This traditional Native American herb is used to support the loosening and release of phlegm and the opening of bronchial passages. Mullein Flower & Leaf: (Verbascum thapsus) Mullein has been shown to help tone the mucous membranes of the respiratory system. Osha: (Ligusticum porteri) Another traditional Native American herb, Osha is used to support the body during periods of upper respiratory stress and congestion. Schizandra Berry: (Schisandra chinensis) This berry is a commonly used substance in Traditional Chinese Medicine and is an adaptogenic herb that can work to bring about system balance (similar to ginsengs). Natural therapies like our herbal formulas do not just attack the symptoms of a disorder. Instead they rebuild your companion's total health and facilitate their body's innate ability to heal itself. When natural remedies are used in conjunction with a nutritious diet, your pet can enjoy a healthier life. The effectiveness of Aller-Free 7 Herbal Formula, as with ANY herbal or natural remedy, varies with the health of the animal. An animal being fed a high quality diet with adequate vitamins and enzymes will respond better than an animal on a poor quality diet. Each animal's system needs support in healing from within. Please see our article, "What You Need to Know About Your Pet's Food," for information about feeding the best quality diet. Little Evey had to go to the vet this past week because he has been coughing. I took this video to show the vet, who said kitty is in perfect health otherwise. So, we're going to do some "watchful waiting" to see how the condition progresses - it may be asthma (!). Hopefully he gets better soon!
