Antibacterial Products: More Harm Than Good?

02:59
By Heidi Hatch(KUTV) Many of us look to antibacterial products to keep our families safe and healthy. However, antibacterial products may do more harm than good. The FDA is weighing the risks verses benefits of antibacterial products carrying the chemical triclosan. Although, this has been a topic of debate for decades, the FDA is now saying they are nearing a final decision on whether products in the U.S. can continue to use the chemical. The stepped up urgency has come in recent years with tests indicating the chemical could be a carcinogen, could wreak havoc on the immune system and interrupt the work of the thyroid gland that controls your body€™s hormones. Triclosan is most commonly used in antibacterial soaps that line store shelves, but is also found in other products, including deodorants, body-wash, clothes, toys, laundry soap, and toothpaste. Joshua Redd, a chiropractic physician, is one of a growing number of doctors and activists concerned about what triclosan can do to the body. Redd says a new study on the chemical is, €œpretty alarming, showing decreased heart function by 25% and muscle function by 18%€ when triclosan is introduced to lab animals. The European Union banned triclosan in most of its products years ago over concerns that have been widely reported on for decades. Redd explains, €œOur thyroid hormones are crucial and with triclosan mimicking your thyroid hormones it can cause a slew of different problems in the endocrine system.€ He says it can cause €œearly onset of puberty, and problems with testosterone, estrogen and the reproductive system.€ Nixon was president when the FDA started reviewing the chemical. In 1972, Congress asked the FDA to officially investigate the safety of triclosan. Six years later, the FDA published its first tentative guidelines, saying triclosan is not generally recognized as safe and effective, Flash forward 40 years and studies show triclosan is no better than old fashioned soap and water for cleaning your hands, but at the same time could be creating antibiotic resistant germs. The only thing triclosan has ever been approved for is toothpaste. Colgate uses it in some of their products to fight gingivitis. While it can help in preventing gingivitis, some doctors wonder if it could do more damage as it is easily taken into the blood stream through the mouth. A recent study shows 75% of Americans test positive for the chemical in their urine, as well as in the breast milk of nursing mothers. As for the slew of concerning studies there is one significant problem€”most of the studies have been done on animals as opposed to humans. Dr. Dev Abraham, an endocrinologist who specializes in thyroid cancer at the University of Utah, points out that €œin animal models the dose of compounds is often hundreds to thousands higher than what we are exposed to on a day to day basis as humans.€ Making the connection he says, at this point, may be a leap. He is waiting for a clear ruling from the FDA, but until then, he tells his patients, €œIf you€™re not sure, and concerned, the best thing is to buy is plain soap.€If you want to check the products you use at home, look on the back. Soaps and cleaning products will list triclosan as an active ingredient. In clothes and toys it will be listed as an €œanti-microbial€ product or under the chemical name microban. Because the chemical is used in many products, it also makes its way into ground water where it becomes a chemical known as dioxin€”a cancer causing agent. The FDA has committed to making a decision in the next few months. And while they are looking at science, you can be sure there are large multi-million and billion dollar companies urging them to rule in their favor. Antibacterial products are big sellers and huge money makers that could cost companies who use them. Here€™s what the FDA has said to date: http://www.fda.gov/forconsumers/consumerupdates/ucm205999.htmMayo Clinic response: http://www.mayoclinic.com/health/triclosan/AN02141(Copyright 2013 Sinclair Broadcasting Group)

Don't Buy Products Containing the Anti-Bacterial Triclosan

09:07
Triclosan is the anti-bacterial ingredient in over 2000 products from hand sanitizer to children’s toys. It messes with the hormones in our bodies and has been banned in the E.U. and in the U.S., but American manufacturers still have time to get it out of products. In the mean time, we consumers have to be on the lookout to not buy products containing Triclosan. But the good news is that washing well with soap and water is just as effective as using anti-bacterial products. And hand sanitizer gels containing at least 60% alcohol, and not containing Triclosan, are considered safe.

Estrogenic #4 Triclosan & APEs (SOAPS) | Plastic Free Mermaid + Dr. Anthony Jay

02:50
#4 Triclosan & APEs (Alkylphenols) or the Soap Estrogenics APEs (banned in the European Union and listed as severely restricted toxic substance by China in 2011) are surfactants, which mean they create suds in soaps, so we are exposed to this estrogenic mostly through detergents or soaps. These products are not required to list their ingredients, so they are extremely hard to avoid. Triclosan is found in many soaps and also toothpastes! Triclosan has been linked to (he even uses the word "causes") spontaneous abortion in humans and mice due to estrogenic properties. Yikes. Now we must think twice before washing our hands! Mermaid interviews Dr. Anthony Jay, author of 'Estrogeneration,' which discusses a class of chemicals called Estrogenics or Estrogen mimicking chemicals and how our daily exposures can cause weight-gains, depression, infertility and other health problems. Chemical used by Colgate Total toothpaste to fight off gum disease is linked to cancer

01:41
FACEBOOK-https://www.facebook.com/newsdailymail?fref=ts A chemical that has been linked to cancer cell growth is being used by millions of Americans in toothpaste every day, it has emerged. The company behind Colgate Total insists that triclosan, which it uses to stave off gum disease, is safe to use because the toothpaste was approved in 1997 by the Food and Drug Administration But the toxicology documents used by the FDA to approve the toothpaste were only released early this year after a Freedom of Information Act lawsuit last year - and reveal the agency relied upon company-backed science to reach its conclusion, Bloomberg News reported In 2010, a student linked triclosan, which has commonly been used to reduce bacteria contamination, to reduced fertility in mice and a 2013 study linked it to lowered sperm production in rats. And a study from 2003 found triclosan in the urine of 75 per cent of 2,517 Americans - including children - who were tested by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention 'We have created a system where we are testing these chemicals out on the human population,' scientist Thomas Zoeller told Bloomberg. 'I love the idea they are all safe. But when we have studies on animals that suggest otherwise, I think we're taking a huge risk.' 'In the nearly 18 years that Colgate Total has been on the market in the U.S., there has been no signal of a safety issue from adverse-event reports,' spokesman Thomas DiPiazza told Bloomberg. He added that, while the FDA had been worried about the chemical's carcinogenicity, a study in 1997 found it did not pose a cancer risk for humans. Colgate said it has no plans to reformulate Total toothpaste. The FDA said on its website that triclosan is 'not known' to be dangerous to humans - but the results found in animals has given them enough of a reason to run tests again. Drug regulators are now reviewing the dangers of the chemical, but they will only re-visit the approval of Total if they find a great enough reason to. In a sign of the concern over the chemical, Minnesota lawmakers banned the chemical in May. Avon and Johnson & Johnson have also announced plans to cut the chemical from its products. In 2010, the European Union banned triclosan in materials that come into contact with food

Soaps and toothpastes may be behind the antibiotic-resistance crisis

04:01
Soaps and toothpastes may be behind the antibiotic-resistance crisis, new research suggests. Triclosan, a chemical found in many everyday products, stops infections responding to the drugs, an Australian study found. The chemical, which has been linked to reduced heart health and an underactive thyroid, is thought to get washed into the environment via sinks in people's homes. Experts have previously warned antibiotic resistance poses 'as big a risk as terrorism'. A lack of new drugs combined with overprescribing is thought to have driven antibiotic resistance, which, according to the World Health Organization (WHO), 'has the potential to affect anyone, of any age, in any country.' The researchers, from the University of Queensland, exposed E.coli to triclosan for 30 days in the lab. Results suggest triclosan causes E.coli's genes to mutate, leading to the bacteria showing greater antibiotic resistance. Lead author Dr Jianhua Guo said: 'These chemicals are used in much larger quantities at an everyday level, so you end up with high residual levels in the wider environment, which can induce multi-drug resistance. 'This discovery provides strong evidence that the triclosan found in personal care products that we use daily is accelerating the spread of antibiotic resistance.' The findings were published in the journal Environment International. Triclosan is a chemical that is added to many personal-care products to prevent bacterial contaimination. It is added to antibacterial soaps, body washes, toothpastes and cosmetics, as well as some clothing, furniture and toys. Studies suggest triclosan decreases the production of certain thyroid hormones and has been linked to reduced muscle function. Triclosan was banned in soaps in the US two years ago. No such ban exists in the UK. The US drug-regulating body the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) declared antibacterial soaps containing triclosan are no more effective than hot water and regular cleansers at killing bugs. How serious is the antibiotic resistance crisis? Professor Sean Brady, from The Rockefeller University, New York, said: 'Despite the wide availability of antibiotics, infectious diseases remain a leading cause of death worldwide. 'In the absence of new therapies, mortality rates due to untreatable infections are predicted to rise more than tenfold by 2050.' The WHO has also classified antimicrobial resistance as a 'serious threat' to every region of the world. Penicillin, the first and most famous antibiotic, was discovered by the Scottish microbiologist Alexander Fleming in 1928. Fleming's discovery allowed doctors to treat and cure infected patients, saving millions of lives. Yet, less than a century after Fleming's discovery, there are precious few antibiotics left and many superbugs are already resistant to all of them. Figures suggest up to 50,000 people die each year due to antibiotic-resistant infections in Europe and the US alone. Globally, at least 700,000 people pass away annually due to antibiotic-resistance complications from illnesses such as malaria, AIDS and tuberculosis.

FDA bans import of feces-tainted cilantro

01:05
The Food and Drug Administration is banning imports of some fresh cilantro from Puebla, Mexico, after a government investigation found human feces and toilet paper in growing fields there. The FDA said health authorities in Texas and Wisconsin also suspect cilantro from the region is responsible for more illnesses this year. The investigation also found dirty containers that had held cilantro and, at one firm, water that tested positive for the cyclospora parasite that caused the stomach illnesses. The summer ban will continue in future years unless a company can prove to health authorities that its product is safe.Of course, the news probably won't affect cilantro-haters who rebel against the tiny leaf for evolutionary reasons, as the New York Times wrote in 2010.

Haircolors may contain Paraphenylenediamine that could cause allergy reactions and cancer if it gets into open sores. Per S. Wilhelm, no federal law has been passes to regulate cosmetics since 1938. To find out if the product you are using is safe, go to the FDA website. Some products could be recalled; if so, FDA will state it on its site. Are triclosan and phthalates safe ingredients in your every day use cosmetics and personal care products? According to research done by Wilhelm; triclosan can help create the superbug. Why do you have to request an MSDS sheet from a product company that you order cosmetics from fro your salon? How much lipstick do women swallow in their lifetime: about five pounds. 💪 Top 7 Testosterone Killers In Your Home

Unfortunately, there are many factors that can negatively affect your hormones - food, exercise, stress, supplements and today’s topic - 7 things in your home, that are lowering and killing your testosterone levels and at the same time, increasing your negative, “anti-testosterone” hormones. This is a problem for both men and women, but much more so for men because they are very dependant on testosterone. Basically, with all of these testosterone killers in your home, the end result is that you look and feel older. You’re going to lose your sex drive, lose muscle size and strength, get fatter, feel depressed, increase your risks for various cancers and diseases and basically, accelerate the aging process! And it seems that a primary cause of these problems is excess estrogen, which indirectly lowers testosterone. Also, estrogen is a primary cause of both breast AND prostate cancer. So, it’s a big problem that you want to fix. Now, your body can create its own estrogen internally (endogenously). However, there’s also environmental estrogens, from the outside (exogenously) and that’s what I’m going to quickly discuss today because these you CAN control. Thus, you should try your best to limit or hopefully eliminate the following 7 testosterone killers in your home. 1 -- Bisphenol A (BPA) Otherwise known as BPA, it is probably the most well-known of a family of chemicals used in the production of polycarbonate plastics for its effect of the hardness of plastic. Not only has it been linked to low testosterone levels, but also to erectile dysfunction and cancers, both prostate and breast. You can find it in: Reusable plastic bottles Kid’s sippy cups Clear, hard plastic items The lining of food cans 2 -- Parabens Another large family of chemical, which have a weak affinity for estrogen receptors. They are most present in sun blocking, SPF blocking lotions though... and this is where they have the potential to cause more damage because you’ll be applying these sunblocking lotions all of your body. This is not only a very large surface area, but you skin also absorbs the chemicals quickly. So if you’re out in the sun, please have a gradual exposure or use a parabens-free lotion. You will find those in a wide variety of products in your medicine cabinet: Cosmetics Shampoos Toothpaste shaving gels 3 -- Phthalates Many air fresheners, scented candles but also other items with the mysterious ingredient “perfume” are actually phthalates, a compound also used to make plastics more flexible. You can find them in many cosmetics and personal care items as well. Make sure you stay away from: Non-organic/non-Essential Oil-based scented candles Body spray Most commercial perfumes Air Fresheners Scented bathroom sprays Aromatic personal care products They have also been found in a lot of fast-food items 4 -- Soy This is a main food source for massive amounts of phytoestrogens. Many vegans and vegetarians want to compensate the lack of protein from animal sources by eating more soy, which leads to a host of health issues - one of the worst in my opinion, being a decrease in thyroid levels.1 5 -- Beer Hops found in beer, is actually a rich source of phytoestrogens, and even beer on the weekends does decrease testosterone levels. So regular drinking or large amount have effects on your androgen levels that are compounded by the other health hazards alcohol has. 6 -- Triclosan This is main antibacterial agent found in antibacterial soap. It, and its cousin triclocarban, have a testosterone-lowering by decreasing the biosynthesis of testosterone.2,3 In fact, it’s also a carcinogen (cancer causing). It’s so bad that the European Union has banned this chemical in 2010, and so has the state of Minnesota - but not the other 49 states. 7 -- Benzophenones ========== Thanks DrSamRobbins

Is Your Hand Wash Toxic?

06:21
We wash and moisturise our hands every day. Washing is of course an important ritual for hygiene. And our hands can very easily dry out as they are exposed to the elements every day. But, what’s in that hand wash you use? And is that hand cream in your bag mostly made of petroleum derived ingredients?  Most hand washes contain SLS, SLES, synthetic fragrances, and parabens. All of these are now known irritants, endocrine disruptors and detrimental to our planet, as well as being mostly derived from petroleum. PLUS you will likely find TRICLOSAN. This is now banned in the US and EU, but not in Australia. It is an anti-bacterial ingredient, but has been shown to be highly toxic to aquatic life, and doesn't actually leave your hands any cleaner than using ordinary soap. These are all to be avoided. Hand creams may leave your hands feeling smooth, but that is probably because they are petroleum based and so just leaving a layer on top of your skin. They are not truly nourishing or hydrating your hands. And those sneaky synthetic fragrances creep into these aswell, to make them smell good. In your Wanderess Box you will find high-performing and non-toxic hand wash & hand creams. They contain NONE of these "suspect" ingredients. They are all Australian brands with rich history’s in green beauty formulation. This month’s Wanderess Beauty Discovery Box is HAND WASHES AND HAND CREAMS. 07:23
You will be surprised to learn that there are everyday things you use that are actually toxic! While it’s almost impossible to avoid chemicals entirely, you should err on the side of caution and reduce their exposure as much as you can! Dangerous chemicals are lurking in many everyday things you use that are actually toxic for your health. Toxic substances, such as flame retardant compounds called PBDEs in mattresses, and BFRs in circuit boards, computer and game console casings. Polytetrafluoroethylene in non-stick cookware. While phthalates or PVC are found in shower curtains, plastic bottles and food containers and in power cords of electronic devices. Benzaldehyde, camphor, ethyl acetate, benzyl acetate, linalool, acetone and methylene chloride in perfumes and fragrances. Chemical surfactants in cleaning products. Ethylene-based glycol ethers and paradichlorobenzene in air fresheners. Bisphenol A or BPA in most canned food containers. Insecticides as well as herbicides in genetically engineered Roundup ready crops such as corn and soy. Synthetic preservatives and fragrances in cosmetic. Quaternary ammonium salts in fabric softeners. Perchloroethylene or PCE in dry cleaned clothes. Triclosan in hand sanitizer. These dangerous chemicals in the mentioned everyday things you use that are actually toxic have been linked to headaches, skin irritation, respiratory problems. They also cause brain and reproductive damage, decreased sperm quality, and neurological damage. These chemicals also have been associated with heart disease, diabetes, thyroid problems, and hormonal problems such as infertility and early puberty. As well as impaired memory and sexual development, as well as liver, kidney, and central nervous system damage. Yes! It’s totally nuts!!! What do you think? Toothpaste Ingredient Could Fight Malaria, Research Shows

toothpaste

08:26
Lets compare the Thieves toothpastes. One of the important finds is that these toothpastes do not contain any fluoride, dyes, propeline glycol, sodium laurylsulphate, any dyes or any atrificail sweetners. Lets talk about bad ingredients :The popular toothpaste Colgate Total contains an antibacterial chemical called triclosan, which allows the company to tout it as the "only toothpaste approved by the FDA to help fight plaque and gingivitis But while triclosan has been shown to help prevent gingivitis, the benefit comes at a steep price. The chemical has been linked to concerns over antibiotic resistance and endocrine disruption. Endocrine-disrupting chemicals are a serious concern, as they can promote a wide variety of health problems, including breast, ovarian, prostate, and testicular cancer, preterm and low birth weight babies, precocious puberty in girls, and undescended testicles in boys. Some animal studies showed that triclosan caused fetal bone malformations in mice and rats, which may hint at hormonal effects. Further, triclosan may interfere with a type of cell signaling in brain, heart, and other cells, such that researchers noted it "may not be worth potential risks. The chemical has also been linked to cancer, with research finding triclosan may promote breast cancer progression. The state of Minnesota has already banned most uses of triclosan, but it's still widely sold across the US in toothpaste, hand soap, makeup, and more. Toothpaste appears to be one of the most potent delivery vehicles for the chemical, as research found people who brushed their teeth with Colgate Total had more than five times as much triclosan in their urine as those who did not. Endocrine disruptors: regulation urgently needed at the EU level

02:30
Endocrine disruptors are substances that interfere with human hormones. We are all exposed to them on a daily basis through products such as food packaging, clothing, cosmetics and children's toys. This is why the European Parliament has been working on measures to prevent any harm derived from these substances for several years. When the issue was brought to the EU Court of Justice by Sweden, the court ruled that the European Commission failed in meeting the deadline to identify and ban potentially harmful endocrine disruptors. And yet there is still no plan to speed up this process. Today the Socialists and Democrats in the European Parliament called on the Commission to take up its responsibilities. Interview with S&D Member Gilles Pargneaux and Jytte Guteland as well as with Dr. Roberto Bertollini, Chief Scientist at the WHO.

You can read the details below, but the FDA is basically saying that none of these ingredients clean your hands any better than plain old soap and water. The FDA did not ban triclosan from toothpaste, but you can easily check whether your toothpaste has it by checking the ingredients label. Triclosan would be listed under “Active Ingredients” in the “Drug Facts” box on the back of the package. Most toothpastes don’t have triclosan, so you can choose to brush without it if you’d like. http://www.fda.gov/NewsEvents/Newsroom/PressAnnouncements/ucm517478.htm http://www.fda.gov/ForConsumers/ConsumerUpdates/ucm378393.htm http://www.nytimes.com/2016/09/07/well/live/why-your-toothpaste-has-triclosan.html?_r=0 About Ingredients: Join MIT-trained chemist and science educator George Zaidan as he tries to recreate everyday household products like toothpaste, lipstick, or shaving cream using only natural ingredients… and no recipe! FDA’s new regulations prohibit cleaning agents from making natural and anti-bacterial clai...

01:43
The Food and Drug Administration is prohibiting manufacturers of household cleaning agents and detergents from using the terms “natural, organic, toxin-free, or antibacterial” in product labeling. The new regulations go into effect on May 1st, with failure to comply resulting in a maximum fine of NT$4mn. The large type on this household cleaning product reads “natural and organic” with this manufacturer hopes to attract the attention of consumers. But beginning on May 1st, these words won’t be permitted on product labels.Hsu Chao-kai FDA Division of Food Safety If your product is not 100 percent natural then you cannot label it as “natural”. If only one part of it is natural, this can be specified in the package’s ingredients list together with the percentage which is natural.According to the FDA, that the main ingredient in detergents is a synthetic surfactant, which definitely is not natural. The FDA also says use of the term “organic” can only be applied if a product has passed related certification tests. But many people are likely to misunderstand labeling of products which are billed as “anti-bacterial”.Hsu Chao-kai FDA Division of Food Safety They need to say if the product itself is anti-bacterial or its function for washing items is anti-bacterial. Foods washed with detergent have to be cleaned again. And plates or utensils which have been washed don’t actually have any anti-bacterial effect. The FDA believes the new regulations will prevent the public from being misled. The measures will take effect on May 1st though a one-year grace period will be implemented, and the maximum fine for failing to comply will be NT$4mn.

My stance on "chemicals" in skin care overall: If you are worried about chemicals, first learn what a chemical is. Water is a chemical. Zinc oxide and titanium dioxide are chemicals. Ascorbic acid (vitamin C) is a chemical. If you want to argue against a specific chemical, call it by name instead of saying you believe in "avoiding chemicals". Second, what you eat is infinitely more important than what you put on your skin because of how the skin and digestive tract function, so if you are concerned about your health, I would recommend focusing on that. Ultimately, it's your body. Do whatever you want with it. You don't need my permission to use or avoid anything, but if you spread misinformation on my channel or on my facebook page, my response will be blunt and unsupportive. To those who vehemently agree with the negative opinions of sunscreen: If you disagree with me and would like to share a different point of view, my response will be proportionate to the level of respect you show in your comment and the degree of reason in your claims. If you're being nasty and/or attack me personally, expect a brutal response. I've already gotten a lot of comments over the years about sunscreens and other "evil chemicals" that are little more than personal attacks against me, and I'm sick of it. Put your feelings away and focus on sharing good information. If new scientific information emerges that supports your position, how either of us *feels* about the matter becomes completely irrelevant. That's the point of science. To everyone else, I encourage you to consider both sides and follow your best judgment on the subject. You are the boss of you. And just as an aside, the Environmental Working Group website is garbage, and I do not recommend that anyone use it as a source of information. What they do is not science.
