In 2010, I was prescribed the antibiotic Cipro (Ciprofloxacin) for a UTI. Upon the first dose, I experienced negative side effects and eventually discontinued taking the medicine. What I didn't know at the time was that this drug has a Black Box Warning. Even after stopping Cipro, I experienced horrific side effects. April 3, 2015 11:34 PM CBS New York http://newyork.cbslocal.com/2015/04/03/seen-at-11-is-the-antibiotic-cipro-a-prescription-for-danger/ Cipro is a common antibiotic that is prescribed for treating a number of bacterial infections, but some say it may be a prescription for danger. “I wanted to be a firefighter since I was a kid,” Chris Jones said. For 9 years Jones has been living that dream, but the last 5 months have been a nightmare. “My life flipped upside down,” he told CBS2’s Dick Brennan. Flipped upside down, he said, because of crippling side effects he experienced after taking the popular antibiotic Ciprofloxacin or Cipro as it is more commonly known. “I went on a walk with my dog after taking the medicine, and it felt like a bomb went off in my body,” he said. It’s pain that continued ever since, especially in his legs. “His story is so, to me, typical of many of the stories I’ve read about and looked through the FDA files on,” Dr. Charles Bennett said. Dr. Bennett is a professor of pharmacy who recently filed a petition asking the FDA to put broader warnings on Cipro. the medication is part of a class of antibiotics called quinolones, along with the drugs Levaquin and Avelox. “Doctors are not aware of the full range of toxicities that are associated with the quinolones,” Bennett said. Critics also charge that the drugs, which are so strong they can kill anthrax, are too freely prescribed for illnesses that could be treated with less powerful medications. “They haven’t done a good enough job warning the public about how dangerous this drug is,” Jones said. The FDA said it’s logged just 4,500 reports of serious side effects, an exceedingly small percentage considering 23-million prescriptions are filled each year. Drug makers already list side effects including the possibility for tendon and nerve damage on the labels. “I just don’t know if I’m going to get better or not, and no one can tell me,” Jones said. Jones is living with the pain and other side effects, which even the FDA acknowledged may be permanent in some people. “The hardest thing is not knowing,” Jones said. The FDA told CBS2 it’s continuing to monitor complaints. Bayer, the maker of Cipro, said in a statement that they encourage patients to speak with their healthcare providers regarding any symptoms that they may experience after taking a prescription product.

Fluoroquinolone antibiotics (Cipro, Levaquin, Avelox and a few others) are a horrifically destructive class of poisons marketed to the public as antibiotics by Bayer and Johnson & Johnson. They are capable of massive harm, disabling unsuspecting patients for life with as little as a few pills. Previously healthy and active individuals become bedridden, wheelchair-bound or requiring crutches or walkers--sometimes for life. Doctors will not tell you this, nor will pharmacists! DO YOUR RESEARCH! The FDA is not protecting us! Already harmed by Cipro or Avelox? Please email Bayer's CEO Phil Blake directly: philip.blake at bayer dot com or call him at his NJ office: 1-862-404-5018. This man needs to hear from his victims!

It is my opinion only, that the damage these antibiotics are causing to people's bodies may be partially or fully due to the drug's destruction of crucially important healthy forms of bacteria in the gut. This, along with leaky gut which I believe is epidemic, may cause both a fungal version of yeast called candida to breach the barrier in the gut, and give the immune system a particularly difficult time managing it, as well as oxalate to also permeate the entire body causing a potential double-whammy that if addressed, may reverse the condition. Lots to be pissed off about with this situation. But one biggie is in how people are being told this condition is permanent. Although I believe it can be difficult to reverse, I believe it is entirely possible if approached from the above theoretical standpoint. That is how I approached it, and have had tremendous results. See my programs as well as the free info over at http://MaintenanceMotions.com. If you have some organic expeller-pressed coconut oil...or oil of your choice according to options available via Ayurvedic tradition...I'd give oil pulling a try, sticking with it for a solid few months. I have found it to be incredibly effective for joint/tendon issues, with dietary change, gut health with probiotics, and candida management to offer profound improvements. I need to consistently maintain the effort, but it's a part of my lifestyle regardless. Then I added some high quality ubiquinol to assist with mitochondrial damage, and energy production. http://FacelessFatloss.com My Over 40 program: http://Over40andRipped.com And Facebook: http://facebook.com/tim.ripped Love, Happiness, Health and Peace.........Tim .

Benign prostatic hyperplasia, BPH, benign prostatic hypertrophy or enlarged prostate, animated tutorial, great for patient education. The prostate is a walnut-size exocrine gland of the male reproductive system. It is located just below the urinary bladder where it wraps around the first part of the male urethra. Prostate gland produces a milky fluid that is expelled into the urethra to mix with spermatozoa during ejaculation. The fluid serves as a lubricant and nutrition for the sperms. Benign prostatic hyperplasia, or BPH, also called benign prostatic hypertrophy or enlarged prostate, is a condition in which the size of the prostate gland is increased. It is considered "benign" because it's not a cancer, and it does not increase the risk of cancer. However, when becomes sufficiently large, the prostate tissue may compress the urethra and block the urine flow causing a number of urination problems and urinary tract infection. BPH is very common in aging men: about 50% of men have some degree of BPH by the age of 60, with half of them demonstrating clinically significant symptoms. BPH is a result of hormonal changes and is considered a normal part of male aging. In aging prostate tissue, the rate of cell proliferation induced by male hormones somehow exceeds the rate of programmed cell death or apoptosis. This results in increased number of cells and enlargement of the prostate. There are two main classes of medication for BPH treatment: - alpha-blockers: these drugs relax smooth muscle in the prostate and the bladder neck, thus relieving the blockage of urine flow. - 5-alpha reductase inhibitors: these inhibit local production of Dihydrotestosterone or DHT- the hormone that is responsible for prostate enlargement. For those who do not respond to medication, minimally invasive treatments are available. These non-surgical therapies use heat to cause cell death or necrosis in prostate tissue. The heat is delivered in small amount and to a specific location to minimize unwanted damage. Different procedures differ mainly in the type of energy used. Transurethral resection of the prostate is a surgical procedure for removal of prostate tissue through the urethra. This procedure has been around for a long time and is still considered gold standard for treatment of severe BPH. Nowadays, it is usually performed when medications and less invasive methods fail.

A doctor that prescribes Ciprofloxacin didn't know that the very debilitating side effects would happen to him when he took it. I am making this post because I know 2 people that were recently prescribed Ciprofloxacin for their colds. DON'T TAKE IT. Both had very bad side affects. Fluoroquinolones can lead to arrhythmias. This is especially important if using levofloxacin or ciprofloxacin with amiodarone. You're not sick... You're being poisoned. Seek natural remedies and stay away from prescription meds whenever possible. Sometimes you can't avoid them, But research what you put in your body. Don't just blindly trust doctors. As you can see in this video. This doctor was also unaware of the dangers. I hope this post saves somebody's life. #4biddenknowledge

Visit http://www.urinarytractinfectionsymptoms.pw for more information about UTI Symptoms! UTI Symptoms - Get Rid of Urinary Tract Infection! Urinary Tract Infection, or UTI, is a common medical issue experienced by millions of people every year. It is caused by bacteria, usually E.Coli, infecting the urinary tract though it is, on occasion, also caused by certain species of fungus. Ninety five percent of urinary tract infections are caused by bacteria growing and multiplying around the opening of the urinary tract but on rare occasion it can travel there directly from the blood stream. The most common form of UTI is cystitis, which occurs when the bladder becomes infected. A rarer and much more serious version is pyelonephritis, which is an infection of the kidneys and/or ureters. Urinary Tract Infection Symptoms range from the obvious to the subtle. Identifying them early is the key to getting more effective treatment. Who Is At Risk? Women are much more at risk for UTI than men, most likely because their urinary tract is shorter than it is in men and therefore bacteria have an easier time traveling to and infecting the tract. Women who are highly sexually active are more at risk than those who are not. Spermicides and lubricants are also risk factors, as they can transfer E.Coli if not used safely. Women who have reached menopause are also at greater risk due the decrease in estrogen in the urinary tract lining. Pregnant women, while not more susceptible to the illness itself, are in greater danger of symptoms which may harm the baby or mother. Due to the extra risk to them, all women have a colony of beneficial bacteria in their vagina that create a hostile environment to other bacteria, although this line of defense is not fool-proof. Although women are the most susceptible to urinary tract infection, men and children also contract it regularly. Around twenty percent of all urinary tract infections happen in men. Although not as much at risk, men have a higher chance than women of developing more serious problems and complications as a result of infection. Children account for three percent of UTI cases. Urinary tract infection symptoms are often mistaken for symptoms of other conditions in the elderly. These Antibiotics Cause Nerve Damage And Lifelong Disability The Fluoroquinolones are a group of antibiotics that are usually prescribed for urinary tract infections and respiratory infections, but these antibiotic can cause serious nerve damage. These antibiotics were given to more than 23 million patients in 2011. Fluoroquinolones include: Ofloxacin (Floxin) Norfloxacin (Noroxin) Moxifloxacin (Avelox) Levofloxacin (Levaquin) Gemifloxacin(Factive) Ciprofloxacin (Cipro) The FDA required an update on the labels of these drugs, their side effects of peripheral neuropathy. Peripheral neuropathy This antibiotic kills the bacteria that cause the illness. But according to new research, the risks of these medications are more than the benefits of it. Peripheral neuropathy is when the nerves which send the information are damaged. This damage disables the connection. People with peripheral neuropathy can feel numbness, burning pain in the legs or the arms and tingling. These medications can cause long-lasting damage to the nerves and this can lead to disability. They can get into the blood-brain barrier and this leads to getting into the brain and damaging the central nervous system. In 2010 Levaquin was the most selling antibiotic and by 2011 had more than 2000 lawsuits from patients. SYMPTOMS AND SIDE EFFECTS You will feel the symptoms after only a few days, and you should contact medical help immediately. The symptoms are: Tingling Numbness Burning Weakness Rupture and tendon damage Shooting pains Confusion Muscle and joint pain Hallucinations NATURAL TREATMENT For sinus infection drink a lot of water and teas. You can prepare a natural remedy with lemon juice and apple cider vinegar. And for UTI you must also drink water and teas and take probiotics like kefir, yogurt, kombucha etc. Watch the video for more information.

WSET-TV Mar 30, 2015 11:03 PM Lynchburg, VA - Popular antibiotics used to treat common infections may be causing permanent damage. Fluoroquinolones have been at the center of more than 2-thousand lawsuits in the past year. They are among the most commonly prescribed antibiotics. Levaquin and Cipro are the big ones, and are used to treat everything from anthrax to a simple sinus or urinary track infection. "The most common side effects are nausea, vomiting and diarrhea, which can happen with any antibiotics" said Stephanie Puckett, Director of Clinical Pharmacy Services at Centra. Yet unlike other antibiotics, Fluoroquinolones come with a special 'black box' warning. That's the FDA's strictest warning, alerting patients of the possible nerve and tendon damage the antibiotic can cause. "I would consider the Fluoroquinolones a very strong or potent class of antibiotics because they do cover a large variety of organisms" said Puckett. But patients around the country say these prescription drugs carry more serious side effects than are listed on the label, including psychological effects. They have banded together on the Facebook page "The Fluoroquinolone Wall of Pain", to push the FDA for stronger warnings. Group member Wayne Smith says he only took Levaquin for 3 days and suffered from "depression from hell, crying all day and night for no reason at all… Panic attacks, 24/7 anxiety that would not stop." Similarly Lana Kennedy says she was "in a state of extreme confusion & began experiencing severe panic attacks" after taking Cipro. Patients filed a citizen's petition asking the FDA to expand its warning on Fluoroquinolones. The new warning would include other reported side effects like damage to mitochondria in cells and psychological effects. The FDA says "they are considering the matters raised by the petition and giving it [their} careful attention."

When consulting a doctor because of illness or other health concerns, it stands to reason that you follow the doctor’s advice and take whatever medicine you are given. It’s what most of us do. But do you know that many prescribed drugs can do more harm than good to your body?In fact, prescription drugs are one of the leading causes of death in the world. This might be news for many, but this is reality. The pharmaceutical industry and prescription drugs have their place in our medically advanced society. It is not possible to treat sickness with a prescribed pill, without dealing with the root cause behind the problem. This is one reason why prescribed drugs are causing some serious side effects, compelling doctors to prescribe more pills to deal with those side effects. It is important to carefully analyze the pros and cons of prescription drugs before making a decision of whether to take them. Here are 10 highly dangerous prescription drugs you should know about. 1. Methotrexate and Other Chemotherapeutic AgentsAnother prescribed drug that can be harmful is methotrexate as well as other chemotherapeutic agents. This drug is used alone or in combination with other medicines to treat different types of cancer, such as breast, head and neck, lung, blood, bone, lymphoma and uterine cancers. Methotrexate is also prescribed by many rheumatologists and other practitioners to treat rheumatoid arthritis. This drug comes as a solution for intravenous (IV) injection, which needs to be injected into a vein. It is also available as an oral tablet. The most common side effects of this drug include mouth sores, nausea, fever, dizziness, stomach pain, tiredness, chills and an increased risk of infections. When taken along with other drugs and for longer durations, methotrexate can cause serious, life-threatening side effects. These serious side effects include bleeding as well as liver, kidney and bone marrow damage. During such a situation, you may suffer from vomit that contains blood, black tarry stools, unusual vaginal bleeding, yellowing of the skin, urinary problems, blisters on the skin, peeling skin and extreme muscle weakness, to name a few.2. AntibioticsAntibiotics are a popular class of prescribed drugs that often restore health and even save lives.Antibiotics are helpful in treating infections caused by bacteria, such as some forms of bronchitis, pneumonia and urinary tract infections. Antibiotics work by killing the bacteria or stopping them from growing and multiplying. But overuse as well as misuse of these drugs can cause long-term health problems. In fact, antibiotics are inappropriately prescribed for conditions that do not even respond to them. Long-term use of such drugs has made many infections more virulent and untreatable. Some of the most harmful antibiotics that are commonly prescribed are Levaquin (levofloxacin), Vancocin (vancomycin hydrochloride), Bactrim (trimethoprim and sulfamethoxazole), Cipro (ciprofloxacin), Avelox (moxifloxacin HCL)

http://homefirst.com/ A certain class of antibiotics have been issued a new black box warning because they cause serious nerve damage. Black box warnings are the most serious and often deadly side effects of drugs that are literally outlined in a black box on the package insert. Fluoroquinolones, such as Cipro, Levaquin, and Floxin were prescribed to over 23 million people in 2011 alone. They are commonly prescribed for respiratory and urinary tract infection. These are relatively simple conditions that have many natural and safe treatment alternatives. However, antibiotics are one of the most commonly prescribed drugs in America. Those hoping to find health from a pill are in for a very serious and very dangerous surprise. These drugs cause peripheral neuropathy within a few days of starting the medication. The nerve damage may last for months or it may be permanent even when the drug is stopped. They do not cause this nerve damage in every person who takes them; however, you are playing Russian Roulette every time you take most prescription drugs. You may be the one who is permanently affected. Is it worth the risk simply for a possibly quicker recovery from an infection?

In our video, we discussed how the antibiotic class of Fluoroquinolones can cause tendon tears in several areas of the body, especially the Achilles tendon. There are several types of Fluoroquinolones, including: ciprofloxacin (Cipro), levofloxacin (Levaquin), moxifloxacin (Avelox), ofloxacin (Floxin), and gemifloxacin (Factive). This class of antibiotics have often been used in the treatment of bronchitis, sinus infections, and urinary tract infections in the past. At this time, it has been recommended that the Fluoroquinolones class of antibiotics be used as a second or third line option for resistant bacterial infections due to the serious side effects. In my physical therapy practice, I've seen several cases of acute Achilles tendinopathy and complete Achilles tendon tears, from one week to six months, after taking a course of this type of antibiotic. This can occur in the highly active athletic population that is more prone to Achilles tendon problems and who typically assume Achilles tendon pain is related to their current training. The other high-risk group is more sedentary, less active individuals with poor tendon health and other co-morbidities such as diabetes. We've also seen these antibiotic side effects in tennis elbow and rotator cuff tendon problems. When initiating physical therapy with this population, you must take a very conservative approach in progressing the strengthening and stretching of the individual. In the cases of Achilles tendon tears and tendinopathies, occasionally we will provide heel lifts, ankle boots or orthotics. One of the difficulties in providing a proper diagnosis is noticing the causal relationship between taking the antibiotics and the resulting tendon pain or dysfunction. Often the patient doesn't link the two events and associates the pain with normal muscular skeletal pathology. In some cases, pain in the Achilles can also be related to a lumbar pathology or referred from a retro calcaneal bursitis, plantar fasciitis and / or ankle dysfunction. At my clinic, we guide patients through a McKenzie mechanical evaluation of the foot and ankle complex to rule out whether some of the Achilles pain is related to another structure in the foot and ankle complex. Upon completion of the evaluation, we hope to establish a movement or position that will increase a patient’s mobility and reduce their pain with certain movements and ultimately restore their ability to function. If you are unsure if you've taken this type of antibiotic, consulting with your pharmacy is a good first step. In cases where you suspect you may be having a side effect from this type of antibiotic, it is imperative that you discontinue any activity that produces pain and consult with a physician.

Don't become another victim of fluoroquinolone antibiotics (Levaquin, Cipro, Avelox, etc)! Demand something SAFER. Something that doesn't have the propensity to cripple you for life. The doctor in this video claims they don't have other options, but that is simply not true. Most doctors are just lazy & therefore reach for the 'big guns' right off the bat without ever trying any of the safer antibiotics first. This all too often results is people becoming crippled over things as simple as a urinary tract or sinus infection. It's YOUR body, YOUR health, YOUR life--YOU'RE the one who will have to live with the consequences of these poisonous drugs, so don't let your doctor bully you into taking them unless it's a life-or-death situation and you've exhausted all other (safer) options. When it comes to fluoroquinolone antibiotics, the cure is often much worse than the disease!

NBC Charlotte 6:09 a.m. EST February 25, 2015 http://www.wcnc.com/story/news/health/2015/02/24/devastating-side-effects-prompt-local-push-to-ban-antibiotic/23977183/ It is a commonly prescribed antibiotic-- doctors offer it for everything from urinary tract infections to sinus infections. But a local mom is pushing to get Levaquin off the shelves after she suffered devastating side effects. And a drug watchdog group is pushing the FDA for tougher warning labels. Shannon Myers is trying to slyly wrap his Valentine's day gift for wife Adrienne. The two are very much in love and very much a team– no matter what. "Every day you push through it, you push through it because you have to," Adrienne says. Adrienne endures grueling physical therapy several times a week; the 36-year-old mother of two struggles to walk. "It's very painful for me, just because my Achilles hurts really bad, so in order for me to not lose strength in my legs, I have to do this. I just have to bear the pain." It started last summer. Adrienne was diagnosed with a sinus infection; doctors prescribed Levaquin, the brand name for a drug called Levofloaxacin. A few days into the prescription she says, "I started having issues with my legs-- my legs hurt, they burn, felt like I walked up hill all day, my feet hurt, I had problems with my eyes, my vision started becoming kind of blurred." It took three months and four doctors to come up with a diagnosis. Dr. Ki Jung, Adrienne's neurologist, says the Levaquin caused tendinopathy and peripheral neuropathy. He says he helped rule other things out and worked on a timeline to figure out what happened. Jung says, "I told Adrienne, let's put a timeline to this and see where we are and then see if we can tease out any correlations; that's really where we were able to get to the notion that this was a Levaquin problem." "So basically the drug attacked her nerves and tendons?" "Correct, in terms of a side effect profile." Adrienne was shocked. "He said unfortunately you have nerve damage from taking Levaquin." Dr. Charles Bennett chairs a drug watchdog agency at the University of South Carolina. He was not at all surprised to hear Adrienne's story. "I'm not surprised. I've been working on this for years. This woman is a story that's replicated in city after city, case after case." He recently petitioned the FDA for new, what's called black box warnings for Levaquin, those are bold warnings meant to grab your attention. The FDA already required black box warnings in 2008, warning of possible tendon rupture and muscle weakness. And in 2013 the FDA required a label change warning of nerve damage. Bennett says the FDA's own stats show 1200 people have died and nearly 100,000 have suffered side effects from Levaquin or Levofloaxcin. "Thankfully it's not life threatening for me. I'm very fortunate that it has not been a life threatening thing for me, so I think about the positive and hopefully my nerves will regenerate themselves and become healthy again," Adrienne says. Her husband Shannon just wishes he could take away her pain. "It makes you wish, just like anybody you love, you could go back and do something about it. Like wish you had more time, researched more, maybe take it off her shoulders a little bit and put it on yours." NBC Charlotte reached out to Levaquin for a statement. They responded Tuesday evening: "LEVAQUIN® (levofloxacin) Tablets is part of an important class of anti-infective prescription medications that have been used for more than 20 years to treat infections, including those that may be serious or life threatening. When used according to the product labeling, LEVAQUIN® has been proven to have a favorable benefit-risk profile." The best advice: ask your doctor and your pharmacist to go over the possible side effects of this drug-- or any other for that matter, and if you have concerns, ask for an alternative.

This illustration video is about Pseudomonas aeruginosa. This part discusses prevention and treatment. Very use full, beautiful and highly comprehensive illustration with a lot of high yield facts and figures. Treatment Many P. aeruginosa isolates are resistant to a large range of antibiotics and may demonstrate additional resistance after unsuccessful treatment. It should usually be possible to guide treatment according to laboratory sensitivities, rather than choosing an antibiotic empirically. If antibiotics are started empirically, then every effort should be made to obtain cultures (before administering first dose of antibiotic), and the choice of antibiotic used should be reviewed when the culture results are available. The antibiogram of P. aeruginosaon Mueller-Hinton agar Due to widespread resistance to many common first-line antibiotics, carbapenems, polymyxins, and more recentlytigecycline were considered to be the drugs of choice; however, resistance to these drugs has also been reported. Despite this, they are still being used in areas where resistance has not yet been reported. Use of β-lactamase inhibitors such as sulbactam has been advised in combination with antibiotics to enhance antimicrobial action even in the presence of a certain level of resistance. Combination therapy after rigorous antimicrobial susceptibility testing has been found to be the best course of action in the treatment of multidrug-resistant P. aeruginosa. Some next-generation antibiotics that are reported as being active against P. aeruginosa include doripenem, ceftobiprole, and ceftaroline. However, these require more clinical trials for standardization. Therefore, research for the discovery of new antibiotics and drugs against P. aeruginosa is very much needed. Antibiotics that may have activity against P. aeruginosa include: • aminoglycosides (gentamicin, amikacin, tobramycin, but notkanamycin) • quinolones (ciprofloxacin, levofloxacin, but not moxifloxacin) • cephalosporins (ceftazidime, cefepime, cefoperazone, cefpirome, ceftobiprole, but not cefuroxime, cefotaxime, or ceftriaxone) • antipseudomonal penicillins: carboxypenicillins (carbenicillin andticarcillin), and ureidopenicillins (mezlocillin, azlocillin, andpiperacillin). P. aeruginosa is intrinsically resistant to all otherpenicillins. • carbapenems (meropenem, imipenem, doripenem, but notertapenem) • polymyxins (polymyxin B and colistin) • monobactams (aztreonam) As fluoroquinolone is one of the few antibiotics widely effective against P. aeruginosa, in some hospitals, its use is severely restricted to avoid the development of resistant strains. On the rare occasions where infection is superficial and limited (for example, ear infections or nail infections), topical gentamicin or colistin may be used.

Klebsiella pneumoniae is a member of the Enterobacteriacae family, along with E. coli and P. mirabilis, which together account for the vast majority of community-acquired urinary tract infections (UTIs). It is also a frequent cause of bloodstream infections and community-acquired pneumonia among alcoholics. This video shows outpatient K. pneumoniae resistance to ciprofloxacin, a fluoroquinolone antibiotic that is a first-line drug for uncomplicated UTIs when local trimethophrim-sulfa resistance is known to be high. Resistance rates fluctuate in the early part of the decade before beginning a steep ascent in 2006. Although resistance levels in the Pacific and Mountain states remain relatively low in the beginning of the decade, all three divisions along the East Coast see a sharp increase after 2006 with rates surpassing 10% in New England. This trend follows the spread of K. pneumoniae resistance to other broad-spectrum drugs. Fluoroquinolone resistance is on the increase worldwide, along with the outpatient use of quinolones. Resistance to fluoroquinolone antibiotics is a particular cause for concern because it has been linked to the emergence of plasmid-mediated quinolone resistance (PMQR), a mechanism by which genetic material that encodes for resistance is transmitted horizontally (from one organism to another) rather than vertically (from parent organism to offspring). The rise of PMQR is thought to accelerate the rate at which other Enterobacteriaceae, including E. coli, develop fluoroquinolone resistance. The national average resistance level for outpatient isolates was 4.5%, increasing from 3.4% in 2000 to 5.5% in 2009. The sample consists of 304,789 outpatient isolates tested for ciprofloxacin resistance. Sample size peaks in 2007, then decreasing to 2005 levels. Data are not available for the following states: AL (2009), AR (2008--2009), CO (2006--2009), GA (2007--2009), IN (2006--2009), IA (2008--2009), KY (2008--2009), ME (2000--2003), MS (2007--2009), NV (2009), RI (2000--2004), SD (2004--2009), UT (2007--2009), CT, HI, ID, MO, MT, NH and WY.

Presidential candidate Hillary Clinton is taking the controversial antibiotic, Levaquin, according to medical information released by her team this week. https://m.hrc.onl/secretary/10-documents/05-physician-letter/HRC_physician_letter.pdf Clinton, who was diagnosed with pneumonia, is on a 10 day supply of Levaquin. Levaquin is the brand name for levofloxacin, which is part of a class of drugs called fluoroquinolones, intended to treat major infections like pneumonia, anthrax exposure, plague and urinary tract infections. Call 6 Investigates has been looking into potential safety issues with the drug, including devastating side effects like tendon rupture, nerve damage and psychiatric problems. In July, the Food and Drug Administration officially approved safety labeling changes for fluoroquinolones including an updated “boxed warning,” also known as a black box warning, which is the FDA’s most serious type of warning mandated by the agency. The warnings advise patients that the serious side effects generally outweigh the benefits for patients with sinus infections, chronic bronchitis, and urinary tract infections, and fluoroquinolones should be used as a last resort. An FDA safety review found the drugs can cause serious, disabling, and potentially permanent side effects involving the tendons, muscles, joints, nerves and central nervous system. Call 6 Investigates reached out to the Clinton campaign, but they have not yet responded, so it’s unclear if Clinton was aware of the new FDA “black box” warnings when she started taking Levaquin. Dr. Charles Bennett, a vocal critic of Levaquin who has not treated Clinton, said her doctors should examine the presidential candidate for possible side effects including muscle weakness. Clinton recently raised concerns when she appeared to struggled to walk while leaving a 9/11 ceremony. “It could be a serious drug reaction,” said Bennett. “The best thing to do is stop the drug, I would suggest, if it’s a potential serious adverse drug reaction. You can use many other antibiotics for pneumonia. I would defer to her physicians there.” Bennett said he is surprised Hillary Clinton was prescribed Levaquin, given the recent label changes and serious side effect concerns. “Our data estimates the FDA receives several thousand reports per year of this toxicity, and several thousand deaths,” said Bennett. “This is equivalent to a 747 plane going down once a month.”
