A constant pursuit in backpacking is finding ways to lighten your load. One way you can do this is by getting your cooking fuel from nature as opposed to carrying it in all the time. In this video I demonstrate how to make a lightweight wood gas backpacking stove. This design has been around for a while and is constructed in such a way that causes the wood to reach a state of secondary combustion whereby the smoke / wood-gas is burned up due to the super-heated air flowing through the walls of the stove. This completely burns up the wood into a fine white ash afterward. It is incredibly efficient, puts out a lot of heat, puts out very little smoke, and saves you from having to carry liquid fuel in your pack. One of the coolest things about this type of stove is that it takes very little fuel to boil 2 cups of water. And all of this fuel can be picked up right off the ground so long as the fuel is dry. For an awesome written tutorial on how all this works and is put together, head on over to http://theultimatehang.com/2012/12/diy-wood-gas-stove-instructions/ ---------- If this is your first time with us, my name is Dave, and David's Passage is the name of my vlog. As you notice I didn't include an ash tray this time. With the ammo can stoves I've made I noticed I mostly empty out the ash every time I took the stove appart and put it on my pack, not during the use. So I figured its unnecessary putting in the work if I'm not going to use it. And its easier to get an air tight box to control the burn. And last but not least: This is a stove for hikes so no need to burn it for days in one spot. I will know for sure how it works later, so stay tuned for a field test video from my upcoming backpacking hike, as soon as the weather turns colder. The downside with this stove is it doesn't have the normal box shape that is optimal for stoves. Cant be stacked vertically, with as much firewood at once as with the usual shaped stoves. The benefits are there is a huge cooking space on top and the not as bulky flat shape is perfect for the backpack. To be honest I don't stack my ammo cans full with firewood either and the burn itself was just as good, if not better, in this one. After this small field test I think the upgrade will be a damper in the flue with some leftovers from the build. If you plan on building something similar feel free to tell me so in the comment section. I can help with tips and tricks with some crucial steps in the build to make the stove safe to handle in a tent. And please no comments about using self tapping screws. I know about them but in my builds I've learned they are not as good as the normal bolt, nut and washer to keep metal together when its red hot. Be meticulous with the details in a build like this. Everything must fit perfectly. Everything should spark when cutting in it. The melting point of aluminium comes very suddenly and you could have the structure coming down on you in a second. The aluminium I used worked but another flag holder could have a different weaker composition. Also make sure to first burn the stove way harder for an hour than you ever will in a tent. Do it outside. Use hardwood. Keep your distance. This is to "burn it in" (make it tight), to see how and if the metal bend in a good way, and to release the hazardous gases from parts that is galvanized.

The secret behind a smoke free wood gas stove is to burn wood and create hot coals the heat makes the wood create a gas by starving the wood from air give's the gas a chance the sink down and get suck out by creating a vacuum at the lower openings and move up with the air inn between the two tin cans mixing the gas and air burning it on top with no annoying smoke just perfect most of the times except in a forest with lots of snake's inn tree's then you need smoke to scare them away to create a safe place to camp for the night without having them falling on your tent and crawl inn your bed how to build a wood stove is very easy looking at the youtube video of course the building plans is one thing diy making it at home is something els you must keep in mind when you build a homemade wood stove that the size hole's you make shifts the air to fuel ratio so its important to test it a few times with a minimal of holes and see what the air to fuel ratio is to adjust the openings laster on to get the best performance at the end its easyer to make more opening then to close them leaving you space to make extra air or gas hole's later on where needed the get it just perfect making the gas wood stove burn a nice flame on top and burning the gas / smoke instead of burning the gas straight of the wood making it burn real fast creating a lot of heat but don't use the fuel to its full potencial most of the backpackers, have to choose between two main designs gas opening in the underside of the inner can ore vacuum openings in the side wall with my plans showing how to build a wood stove testing witch of the designs is the most efficient and lightweight stoves of boht making the decision for the diy backpacker really easy to make them out of small tin cans to carry in there pocket a other good welcome is the best design being a high efficiency wood stove and having your fuel burn 50% longer saving you money and time on collecting sticks ore buying wood pellets of course there are more people then just backpackers that can make good use out of this lightweight easy portable gas wood stove like a prepper campers and hunters using it for the weekend trips or holiday weeks outdoors camping and best way to make them is using the tin cans you use for dinner at the camp or pre homemade diy smoke free wood burning gas stove out of old used tin cans thanks for reading and watching my video hope you give it a like and subscribe for more video's about diy camping backpacking air rifle maintenance tuning and improve shooting targets

Hey guys I know this video is a little different but I wanted to share this cheap ultralight stovepipe that I made with you. It's an easy do it yourself build using only three cookie sheets from the dollar store. DIY stovepipes have never been easier to make, and I was very surprised at how well it worked. We discuss making the pipe, putting it together and taking it apart, as well as get to see it in action. Three cookie sheets and some spare wire and you yourself can make this in less than two hours. The price breaks down to about $1 for every ten inches of pipe you make. It has a diameter of about one and a half inches and was rolled around a piece of PVC to make the tube. The wire is then wrapped around the PVC tightly, then slid over the finished stovepipe. I thank you guys for watching this video I hope you enjoyed it and I hope you learned something. How to make an "All-In-One" cook kit that includes a cook pot, stove, stand/windscreen, and even fuel! This cheap little combo is very easy to put together and is a safe alternative to DIY alcohol stoves. The kit features an 10cm Imusa mug that serves as a versatile cook pot, a stand/windscreen which wraps around the stove/fuel canister for easy storage and transport, and a diethylene glycol fuel canister with a 2 hour total burn time. The materials used for this cookset can be obtained at your local dollar store and Walmart. The liquid "diglycol" fuel used in this system is a great alternative to methanol based gel chafing fuels in that it produces a higher heat output (approx. 890 BTUs), is non-flammable and safe, and can be sealed for later use. The heat output is not nearly as great as with typical backpacking stoves such as those that use alcohol or butane/propane fuels. This stove system does produce a nice mid-range burn however and allows for diversity when preparing meals other than those which simply require boiling water. All-in-all, a good option for the occasional weekend hiker, the "budget backpacker", prepping, or simply as a backup cooking source in an emergency. Using a principle known as wood gasification (or pyrolyzation), the smoke is burned in an afterburner, thus creating the extra heat which makes this wood stove so efficient. The stove weighs only 6 ounces and packs down to 4"×5". The tools needed to make it are as follows: • try square with inch markings • electric drill • step bit with at least 1/4", 5/8" and 3/4" steps • metal snips • marking pen • hammer and nail During construction there is much metal cutting and drilling. Care should be taken to avoid cutting oneself. File down any and all sharp edges. Twigs about ⅓" to ½" in diameter and about 1½" long work well. Once lit, it's important to feed it fuel on a regular basis. We find maybe three twigs or so per minute is optimal. It might need a little experience to get the "feel" for the right rate. The stove is quite insensitive to the type of wood used. We've fed it oak, cedar and yaupon twigs, scraps from woodwork, etc. Whichever fuel is used, it must be dry. After a while, it'll be necessary to empty the ash.

Ready-made stove ▶ https://amzn.to/2NjlpFY This is a video of my DIY ammo can stove. This mini homemade wood stove can burn wood without producing smoke thanks to its secondary burn system and insulated burn chamber. You can buy these ammo cans here ▶ https://amzn.to/2BkRDLl Due to its large primary air intake pipe and its rockwool filled, double skinned construction, this ammo can stove also functions as a 'rocket stove'. Once it is up to its working temperature, fuel can be added without having to open the door of the stove. This ammo can stove is tiny, easily portable, cheap to build, and yet burns wood so efficiently that it produces virtually no smoke. (In an inefficient stove the smoke emitted is indicative of unburnt fuel, which results in wasted energy. This stove burns at a very a high temperature and this, coupled with its superheated secondary air system, ensures this smoke is fully combusted before leaving the flue, increasing efficiency and reducing pollution.) This kind of small homemade wood stove is ideal for many uses: camping, fishing, heating any small space etc. (Carbon Monoxide can KILL: beware of this with any open flame) With the addition of a copper coil around the flue, this mini wood burner could be used to heat water via simple thermosyphoning process. This could provide hot water for showers etc. in remote off-grid locations (as well as boats, RV's, tiny homes etc.). I have no idea if there will be any interest in this DIY wood stove... I have an improved version (which would be my 3rd prototype) in my mind that I will make one day and I can make a video showing you exactly how to make one of these yourself. (These stoves are very cheap and easy to build.) If you want me to do this then please tell me in the comments section below the video. Once I get 100 comments asking me to make the ammo can stove build video, I'll do my best to prioritise this project and make the new stove and put the video on my YouTube Channel for you. (This may take quite a while as I have a very busy life!) Thank you very much indeed for watching. If you enjoyed this video then please share it with your friends! This gas has no smell and can easily kill. (People die every year from carbon monoxide poisoning. Most go to sleep in an enclosed space with insufficient ventilation and then just never wake up.) You must ensure you have adequate ventilation and it is highly recommended that you use a CO detector if using an open flame in any enclosed space. Galvanised steel can also give off toxic fumes at high temperatures so beware of this if using galvanised steel components. #diy #woodstove #rocketstove #secondaryburn #woodburner

FREE gear! I copied this concept from many online videos out there showing wood gasifying stoves. This was free, easy and fun to make. It works great as you can see on the video. I used a drill to make the perforations but you can make them with a nail or a knife. The whole thing weighs only 4 oz. Thanks for watching, HAPPY TRAILS...

This little wood stove is one of my favorite! It's small enough to fit in a water bottle pocket and burns all types of natural tender with almost no smoke. Watch this real time burn performance and see how efficiently it burns leaving only ash in the bottom when done. This DIY stove is smaller than others I've seen. It features a standard small Campbell soup can inside of a Hunts tomato can. Here's a link to see how I modified the cook set to be used as an oven: https://youtu.be/F_XlGx7P2t0 To see how to make this diy stove using a larger outside can than mine check out Intense Angler's video here: https://youtu.be/BxODae_BS74 I love this little stove! Hope you do too. Here's the link to the build and test the lightweight camp oven you see in this video above. It's been very popular. https://youtu.be/F_XlGx7P2t0
