Men and women can both use whey protein shakes to lose weight, find out how! A lot of people think whey protein is only for bodybuilders, bros, and super jacked stick figures like myself. Not true. Whey protein is actually a tremendous tool for those of you looking to lose weight. That’s why today, I am going to show you exactly how to use whey protein for weight loss. Here are the 7 best tips and steps for beginners. 1. Understand what whey protein actually is. Whey is the liquid part of milk that gets separated when cheese is made. If you’ve ever opened a yogurt container and have seen a watery substance at the top, this is whey protein. This liquid substance is what is turned into powder form to create whey protein. Just in case you’re wondering, this process also cuts out the 95% of the lactose so if you’re allergic to dairy, you really have nothing to fear. 2. Understand the different types of whey protein powder. There are three main forms of protein powder: whey concentrate, isolate, and hydrolestate. Concentrate is about 70-80% protein with some milk sugar and fat. Isolate is 90% protein and has a little less sugar and fat. Hydrolysate is also known as hydrolyzed whey, has virtually 0 sugar and fat, and is mixed with enzymes for the faster digestion into the blood stream. So, you may be wondering, does the type of protein matter? Not really. The minute differences between to two are not enough that it should cause you any stress or concern. Leave that sort of worrying for your overall diet and exercise routine. For what it’s worth, most of the studies are done using whey isolate and it’s what I use as well. 3. Understand why protein works so well for weight loss There are 3 reasons are particularly compelling… #1. It will keep you full. Protein can cut down sugar cravings by as much as 60%. #2. It’s easy. As long as you have a blender bottle on hand, all you need to do is add water. Which is great to have on the go or at work where eating healthy is more difficult. #3. It preserves lean muscle tissue when dropping weight. This ensures that when you do lose weight the majority of it is fat. We talk a lot about protein on this channel and this is just the short list of reasons why. 4. Whey protein has lots of other proven health benefits, which helps the body function better and makes weight loss easier. Things like: Improves muscle performance Lowers blood pressure Reduces symptoms of stress Helps you get in more water naturally And contains a small amount of antioxidants. Are additional reasons why whey protein is important and helpful for weight loss. 5. What are the best times to take whey protein? In order of importance. Take 30 minutes before or after your workouts. This has been shown to help with muscle development and recovery after a workout. Take 30 minutes before meals or dinning out. This will help you keep you from binge eating and give you more control over what you eat when out with friends or family members. Finally, you can use it as a healthy snack. Whenever my chocolate cravings hit mid day, I use it to get in my chocolate fix without all the sugar. 6. What should you mix it with? Water or unsweetened nut milks like cashew, almond, and coconut work best. Try to avoid using milk as it has a good amount of sugar. Other great places to use protein is in oatmeal, Greek yogurt, and smoothies for a flavor boost. This really adds a great taste to the otherwise bland healthy foods. 7. How much should you get in? I used egg whites as my protein source and they are safe to throw into your shake as long as they are pasteurized! *You can use this protein and fiber packed smoothie as a meal replacement for breakfast, lunch, dinner or for snacking in between! Just make sure you fit it in according to what your diet calls for calorie-wise, and with the proper timing according to your diet. That is why I used more egg whites in my shake and added a little more of every ingredient! Here's the amount of egg whites I included and what the servings came out to be: 1 Serving of Eggs = 25 Calories, 5 grams protein, 75 mg potassium 3 Servings = 75 Calories, 15 grams protein, 225 mg potassium *Tip: Axe the kale for a superfood that is green like spinach, parsley, broccoli, celery, avocado, to name a few. *Tip: If you want to add dairy to your shake, axe the egg whites for a healthy protein like greek yogurt, or kefir. Well this highly depends on when you're taking it and what your goals are. so in this video I"m going to break down which protein is best based for your goals & your finances because some are much more expensive than others. Let's start first with a very common one... Whey protein Isolate. Whey Isolate and whey protein in general is one of the best protein powders you can take directly after your workout. The reason for this is because your body can digest this protein very very fast, like in under 30 minutes fast. In case you don't know, all forms of whey protein come from cows milk. Whey protein isolate has been filtered in such a way that it gives you one of the purest forms of protein on the market. Whey protein in general contains the richest sources of BCAAs, which include the three amino acids leucine, isoleucine and valine. All three of these are critical for muscle growth and recovery. This is why even if your getting a protein blend with different types of protein you want to make sure whey protein isolate is at the top of the ingredients list. Pure whey isolate will also have less than 1% lactose, so many lactose intolerant people are able to digest whey isolate much better. Whey protein concentrate is different from isolate because it goes through less filtering, which means fewer of the natural carbohydrates found in milk are removed. The result is a whey product that is much lower in protein content and is usually higher in carbs. The big benefit of getting concentrate is that its usually much cheaper than isolate, which is what makes it one of the most popular types of protein. I would be careful though when trying to just go for the cheapest protein powder. Some manufacturers go through questionable protein suppliers. Their protein powder likely contains far less protein and far more carbs and fat than what is even claimed on the label. On top of that these cheap protein powders may also contain impurities and contaminants. Next we have hydrolyzed whey protein, which is pretty much the absolute best protein you can take after your workout, but it's also the most expensive. This protein is already broken down into even smaller particles so your body will be able to absorb this even faster than whey concentrate or even whey isolate. When the protein from milk gets separated you have about 20% whey protein and 80% casein protein. Casein protein is another great source, full of all the amino acids you need, but even though it comes from milk it is very different from whey. Casein is the type of protein shake that you would want to take in the middle of the day as a meal replacement, and also at night before bed. The reason for this is because casein is much slower digesting than whey sometimes taking 5-7 hours to digest. It won't spike your insulin the way whey protein will, which doesn't make it the best protein to have after a workout, but it will give you a constant long lasting steady stream of protein & amino acids to help your muscles recover. If you want a good mix of whey and casein you can get a milk protein concentrate, which contains both in about and 80/20 ratio. Just like whey, egg white protein has a complete essential amino acid profile, which promotes optimal recovery from challenging workouts. Egg white protein was the most popular type of protein supplement for many years before milk proteins surpassed its popularity due to their better taste and lower cost. This type of protein is great for people that are lactose intolerant because eggs have the second highest bio availability, which means that your body is very good at using protein that comes from this old school source of protein. Of the vegetable protein types, soy, rice, hemp, and pea protein are the most popular. Soy and hemp protein are the only plant proteins currently on the market with a complete amino acid profile. Rice protein ranks highest in terms of bioavailability, but it is not a complete source of protein. One of the best ways to get a complete source of plant based protein is to get a powder with a combination of different plant sources. Proteins is responsible to trigger 3 main fat burning hormones - growth hormone, IGF-1, glucagon. But Proteins should not be consumed in excess quantity as that can stop us from losing weight as that can trigger insulin. The quality of protein intake also determines fat burning so it should be a high quality (no soy), no added sugar, digestible, non-allergic, complete. A high protein diet in the appropriate amounts will ensure is ideal for losing weight and fat burning. Protein does trigger fat burning through 3 hormones; Growth Hormone, IGF-1 and Glucagon. However, there are several rules that apply: Keep your protein at 20 grams per meal, keep the quality high (no soy) and complete, make sure it's digestable and non-allergic and lastely make sure there is NO sugar added to the meal as sugar increases insulin, the opposing hormone. I recommend pea protein if you wanted a meal replacement as it's easy to digest, no allergies, complete and taste pretty good. It may be hard for you to get enough protein from your diet and supplementing with protein powder can definitely help you hit your Macros. It's also great to have after a workout and when you're on the go. There are so many different types of protein that I have a whole video specifically about protein powders that I'll link up at the end. But I really like whey protein because it's cheap it tastes good and your body is very efficient with it. My favorite brand is Optimum Nutrition 100% gold standard whey isolate. If you're lactose intolerant consider an egg-based protein powder instead. The Next supplement that works very well is creatine. Different people will experience different results with different types of creatine and there are a lot of different types. Monohydrate is pretty much the most basic form of creatine, probably the cheapest, and it happens to be the most studied. Creatine monohydrate has proven itself in study after study so it's a pretty safe bet to start with. There are many other types like kre akalybn for example that claim to reduce bloating and claim to eliminate the need to cycle off of creatine. However not one type of creatine has the kind of backing with scientific evidence that monohydrate has. My favorite creatine brand is probably the cheapest one. It's just plain Monohydrate from Now sports. I used to take cell tech hardcore when I used to bulk and it would always help me put on some weight. However this was like 5 years ago so they've probably change the formula by now and the old formula used to have tons of sugar in it. Like I said now if I take creatine it'll be the plain monohydrate from Now sports. Next up are your stimulants and your supplements that give you energy. Nitric oxide, caffeine, vitamin b, and beta alanine again that's all you need. Nitric oxide will help give you a great pump during your workouts and will also give you a bunch of energy and help you squeeze out those last couple reps. Beta alanine will decrease lactic acid build-up in your muscles during your sets. Which will allow you to recover faster between your sets. By decreasing fatigue beta alanine will also be another great tool to help you push out extra reps. The one side effect of beta alanine is that youll feel pins and needles when you first start taking it but it'll become less intense over time. Caffeine and vitamin B you can take anytime.

Effect of Whey Protein on Insulin Whey is one of the two main proteins in milk - the other is casein. Whey, like all proteins, is made up of amino acids, the building blocks of protein. When we consume protein, we then break down these amino acids and use them for muscle growth and tissue repair. Whey contains all three BCAAs along with all of the essential amino acids. Whey is highly insulinogenic - consuming whey leads to a sharp increase in insulin levels. This response does not have to do with blood sugar levels - when a food has a high glycemic index, consuming it will cause a large increase in blood sugar levels. In response to this, the body produces insulin to combat the high blood sugar and allow glucose to enter our cells for energy. This is not what is happening when we consume whey - insulin release is responding to amino acids, not glucose levels. Insulin binds to cells to allow them to take up energy, which can be glucose or amino acids from proteins. The amino acids in whey cause an insulin release. Whey also leads to the release of GIP and GLP-1, two gastrointestinal hormones that also raise insulin levels. This increase in insulin is actually a good thing! Whey is a fast acting protein, and the spike in insulin allows amino acids into the muscle cells to encourage repair, helping us to gain muscle and heal quickly. Consuming whey protein has actually been shown to lower blood glucose levels when consumed during or directly before a meal. A 2005 study in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition found that when whey was combined in a high-sugar meal, individuals with type-2 diabetes had a lower blood glucose level following the meal than if no whey was consumed. This is thought to be because the increased insulin aided the body in glucose digestion. Generally, the better the whey, the higher the insulin spike and thus the more effective at delivering building blocks into the cells for the purpose or repair and growth. Best to consume whey directly following exercise. It is quickly broken down and made available to muscle cells for repair post workout. Whey protein isolate contains 90% protein and thus has less lactose, fat and cholesterol than whey protein concentrate. To get the most out of your protein, go for the whey protein isolate. You will experience less bloating and get more of the benefits - lean, ripped muscles. Too much protein is dangerous, so be sure not to consume excess protein.
