A Very Simple, Virally deployed Flow-Through, Solar Thermal Water Pasteurizer Could Save Lives In The Tropics. Introduction. (See the other more detailed videos, as well.) How do I build my solar water pasteurizer? You can convert a large sheet of corrugated iron or a sunny part of your actual metal roof into a solar thermal water pasteuriser. (a) First, insulate underneath it with straw or foam. This stops heat from escaping downwards. (b) See the video diagram, tape on top a double, side-by-side zigzag of food grade flexible silicone pipe. This pipe is often used in dairies. (c) Inside the top loop, now fit the thermostatic valve. This only lets clean water flow when it has been pasteurized over 80C. (d) Put a second sheet of black roofing metal on top of it all. Black catches the sun's rays. (e) To stop heat from escaping upwards, over the top of it all, now add some simple glazing, glass or polycarbonate. It must not touch what is below. (f) Block all the gaps around the edges to stop heat loss. (g) Finally, add two empty water tanks: the lower one is for clean pasteurised water. Each should hold enough water for a week. How does this simple solar water pasteurizer actually work? Fill the top tank with river water or pond water, which may contain disease-causing pathogens. The sun heats the solar pasteuriser whenever it shines. If the water inside was not allowed to flow, it would actually boil! But instead of boiling, when the water inside becomes heated to 80C the thermostatic valve opens, and this lets safe, heated (pasteurised) water flow through. The valve needs no external power and automatically shuts again when the water is below 75C, to stop living pathogens from passing through. The top of the panel is much hotter than the bottom, because it contains a "counterflow heat exchanger" of parallel pipes, which recover heat from the outgoing water. Using this design pasteurises much more water each day. The system needs no pump: when the valve opens, gravity makes the water flow from the top contaminated tank to the lower clean tank, always going via the top hot zone, which kills all pathogens. Whenever the sun is too dull to operate the pasteuriser, it usually tends to rain. Rain water, being clean, may be used in preference to pasteurising pond or river water. Short term initial deployments intend to reliably deliver drinking water for three small communites totaling around 100 people, depending on the installations' final size and performance. Longer term, many sensitive assumptions associated with the mathematics of exponential growth come in. If viralised, and assuming the most optimistic a doubling rate of three months, then: Year 0: 100 people will have clean water at the end of the third deployment and if it viralises... Year 1: 1,600 people Year 2: 25,000 people Year 3: 400,000 people Year 4: 6.5 million people Year 5: 100 million people This extrapolation is, of course extremely ambitions, but it might just be possible: market penetration of mobile phones in the tropics happened far faster and has risen far higher. Convenient, safe water is also very important. If viralisation does not happen, then growth be minimal, beyond the initial hundred or so people, or it may slowly extend to a perhaps few thousand people. But if viralization does happen, suitable global press and PR coverage could even radically shorten the above timescale. Beyond the leading issue of access to safe drinking water, many other potentially calculable wider outcomes are also expected to scale up, roughly in proportion both in the short and long term. While, no estimate will be offered here to quantify these benefits, as discussed before, it is expected that these benefits will include: improved air quality, preservation of local scrub or forest biomass, strengthened community confidence, local recycling and micro-enterprise, wealth and resilience, and, of course, the relief of suffering from waterborne diseases, asthma and scalds, and, finally, top of the list, the saving of lives.

small solar water heater I set up that will heat (and pasteurize) water very quickly. made using 50' 1/4" black tubing (black poly pipe). total cost $6.00. water gets to 158F (70C) very quickly. For extra PICS and INFO. go to my YouTube channel page and click on the (picassa photo gallery) "Website Link". Contrary to what many people believe, it is not necessary to boil water to make it safe to drink. Also, it is usually not necessary to distill water to make it safe to drink. Heating water to 65º C (149º F) will kill all germs, viruses, and parasites. list of pathogens and what temperature they are killed: Microbe: Worms, Protozoa cysts (Giardia, Cryptosporidium, Entamoeba) - are killed rapidly at 131F (55C). Bacteria (V. cholerae, E. coli, Shigella, Salmonella typhi), Rotavirus - are killed rapidly at 140F (60C). Hepatitis A virus is killed rapidly at 149F (65C). Worldwide, unsafe water is a major health problem. Over 1 billion people do not have access to safe water. Preventable waterborne diseases are responsible for approximately 80% of all illnesses and deaths in the developing world. Children are especially susceptible, with nearly two million deaths each year

Empower Haiti, is a program where smalll solar energy plants are built in the U.S. using local labor, packed into shipping containers and sent to Haiti. The Haitian community unpacks the containers and rebuilds the solar power plants, developing their skills. Renewable energy is viable now. A combination such as; solar cookers, solar water purification, solar PV, solar thermal could replace burning timber, coal and diesel. Rebuilding with renewable energy is the path to long term energy independence and an opportunity to show that the world can give a desperately poor country meaningful development, not just aid.

See how long it takes to boil water on my tin can rocket stove. This rocket stove is made of a coffee can and three soup cans. A rocket stove is a super efficient stove, using very little fuel to cook or boil water with. The burning chamber is insulated, which raises the temperature and causes a full combustion of the fuel. There is also an air chamber underneath the feed tube which allows air to circulate under the burning wood. This further improves the combustion and efficiency of the stove. This rocket stove is very simple to make and works quite well. It makes a great survival or camp stove. You can almost always find something flammable to use for cooking in this stove in a survival situation. At the Fall Leadership Conference on October 13th, 2013, Interact District 5170 revealed the International Project theme for the 2013-2014 year. We live in a world dependent on fossil fuel usage. Fossil fuels, however, are not only hazardous causing pollution and global warming, but they are limited: we will run out within the next couple of decades. Our goal with our 2013-2014 International Project, The Answer is the Sun, is to provide people in third world countries with solar technologies NOW so that they can avoid fossil fuel usage and leapfrog directly to solar. Working with Trust in Education, Interact plans on sending 5,170 solar cookits (ovens), each one stamped with the District 5170 logo, to refugee families in Afghanistan. It cost $15 to send a cookit and a Wapi, which a water pasteurizer, to Afghanistan. $15 for us, yet a good 40 cents a day are saved for these families who are trying to get by on a daily budget of $1 or less. Not only are we giving them the tools for a sustainable, cheaper form of energy but we are also saving the families in Afghanistan from the hazardous effects of the wood fires which they currently use to cook. 2 million deaths a year are caused by smoke inhalation, mainly women and children. This year we are putting a new twist on the International Project. Every Interactor will have a chance to create these cookits, the exact ones which we are sending to Afghanistan, at one of the multiple building workshops which we will have throughout the year. Hopefully, with the hands on element, Interactors will understand the importance and the value of the gift which we are sending. $77,550. 5,170 cookits. Together let's empower change. If you can get your unsafe water to 150 degrees and let it cool before drinking while keeping it covered to stop the recontamination you are good to go. The temperature for boiling is 212 degrees which would required additional fuel. This is great tool for camping or any emergency. When the wax melts and goes to the bottom of the container it is pasteurized and ready to drink when cool.

Less fresh water and heating media Focus on: The buffering system called "Hot Buffer with the CHESS heating system" (CHESS in this context is not a game, but actually stands for "Central Heat Exchanger Supply System). And another buffering system called "Cold Buffer". Logically enough, warm water is stored in the Hot Buffer and cold water in the Cold Buffer. The two upgrades together enable fresh water consumption to be reduced by more than 20 per cent -- additional cooling media can largely be dispensed with. We moved to this bare acreage nearly seven years ago with not much more than a head full of homesteading books and a dream. Neither of us had ever built a house, used solar power, kept animals, or built homestead infrastructure by hand. We still feel like greenhorns in so many ways and this video of milking Mabel tells part of that story.
