Kidney Cancer Survival Rate

Click on http://stayhealthyvideos.com/kidneydiet to get detailed information about a kidney healthy diet. Transcript: Kidney Cancer Survival Rate The kidney cancer survival rate depends on a number of different factors related to both the individual patient and to the kidney cancer itself. In estimating a kidney cancer survival rate, medical researchers must consider a general range of variables, including the type of cancer, the stage, the grade, and the location. There are also influential variables that are specific to each patient, including age, general health, and individual response to treatment. This said, medical researchers have been able to come up with general kidney cancer survival rate numbers. The statistics in this article focus on the most common type of cancer of the kidney, which is known as renal cell carcinoma. Calculations for the kidney cancer survival rate are expressed as a percentage of patients with a certain type of kidney cancer which has reached a certain stage Statistically, patients with kidney cancer of a certain type at a certain stage may generally expect to survive for at least a certain period of time after being diagnosed. Of course, as is the case with most studies, the kidney cancer survival rate is based on analysis of a large number of patients. It's impossible to accurately predict outcomes for every individual. The standard survival rate used for cancer of the kidney (and many other diseases) is a five-year interval. In other words, the percentage of kidney cancer patients will still be alive five years after their diagnosis. The percentage does not consider whether the patient still has kidney cancer, or whether he or she is completely in remission or free of symptoms. It only reports whether or not the patient is still alive. There are different ways to calculate kidney cancer statistics. The numbers below are based on a measure of the survival of kidney cancer patients in comparison to the general population. The time period in this study was 1995-2001. The overall kidney cancer survival rate for this period was 64.6 percent. Broken down by race and gender, the numbers were: 64.7 percent for Caucasian men 64.5 percent for Caucasian women 61.8 percent for African American men 65.9 percent for African American women. It's also important to consider how far the disease has progressed in calculating a survival rate. The degree of progress is known as the kidney cancer stage. 53 percent of kidney cancer cases are diagnosed while the cancer can only be found in the kidney. It has not spread to other parts of the body (metastasis). 20 percent of cases are discovered after cancer has spread to lymph nodes or directly beyond the primary area (known as the regional stage). 22 percent after has already metastasized in another organ or area of the body (the distant stage). Staging information was unknown for the remaining percentage. As you would expect, a higher percentage of patients whose kidney cancer was diagnosed in the earlier stages typically survived the longest. Other kidney cancer statistics include the following: 90 percent reached the five year survival mark when the cancer was localized in the kidney. 60 percent for regional 9.7 percent for distant 32.2 percent for unknown or undiagnosed stages.

🇺🇸 US study links poverty to low cancer survival rates | Al Jazeera English

01:58
A new study by a group of researchers from the United States suggests that poverty makes minority children less likely to survive many types of cancer. The study looked at 32,000 black, white and Hispanic children with 12 types of cancer between 2000 and 2011. It found that racial differences alone could not explain the sometimes wide differences in survival rates. The next step is to get my DNA Sequenced, so as specialist medical researchers can see if we can find the needle in the haystack to treat this. Not everyone can get the same type of treatment, not everyone is able to have chemo, radiotherapy, immunotherapy and the likes. I am one of those with a rare form of cancer that can't be treated by conventional means. There is litterally no research into this type so it's important to me, to document everything and record it all, so that if something can be done and someone spots it, we have that added bonus! https://www.gofundme.com/peeweetoms ------------------------------------------- Need Proof? Prostate cancer survival rates very high regardless of treatment, study finds

03:19
REGULAR monitoring of prostate cancer as a treatment option offers the same chances of survival 10 years after diagnosis as surgery or radiotherapy, a major study into the disease has discovered. The ten year-long trial, which examined men with localised prostate cancer, found survival rates were extremely high, approximately 99 per cent, irrespective of the treatment administered.  There was no spread of the disease in around 80 per cent of men who were actively monitored during the UK-wide study.  But having surgery or radiotherapy reduced the risk of cancer spreading even further, dropping by more than half against those being monitored, to less than 10 per cent.  Researchers said the findings had "major implications" for men diagnosed with localised cancer via the prostate-specific antigen (PSA) blood test, used for cancer screening.  There is currently no routine screening for prostate cancer in the UK, and the study's results will play a key part in the decision on whether to screen for cancer.  But the scientists said the trial results alone would not allow them to recommend whether or not to implement such a programme.  Professor Freddie Hamdy from the University of Oxford, who led the research, said: "What we have learnt from this study so far is that prostate cancer detected by PSA blood test grows very slowly, and very few men die of it when followed up over a period of 10 years - around 1 per cent - irrespective of the treatment assigned.  "This is considerably lower than anticipated when we started the study."  Prostate cancer is the most common cancer in men, with over 47,000 diagnoses every year in the UK and around 10,800 deaths. Between 20,000 and 30,000 men are diagnosed annually with localised prostate cancer through the PSA test.  The ProtecT trial, funded by the National Institute for Health Research and carried out by researchers from the Universities of Oxford and Bristol, is the first to examine the effectiveness, cost-effectiveness and acceptability of three major treatment options for men with localised prostate cancer - active monitoring with PSA testing every three or six months, surgically removing the prostate gland, and radiotherapy.  Between 1999 and 2009, 1,643 men aged 50 to 69 were given one of the three treatments after they were diagnosed via the PSA test, from a sample of 82,429 men, with localised prostate cancer.  The results, published in the New England Journal Of Medicine, revealed exceptionally low mortality rates, around 1 per cent, irrespective of treatment type.  Surgery or radiotherapy reduced cancer spreading by more than half compared with active monitoring, occurring in less than 10 per cent of men rather than around 20 per cent for the monitored group.  Both interventions caused unpleasant side-effects, particularly in the first year post-treatment, but there was no difference in treatment effectiveness between them. Protect YOU AGAINST CANCER By Eating These 4 AntiCANCER Foods To Drop Your CANCER Rates Dramatically

10:53
Cancer Prevention – These Foods Are The Best Fighters Against Cancer! For many people the thought of cancer is so terrifying that they would skip this article only because they do not want to invoke the devil. Cancer takes millions of lives every year and can happen to you in any age in life and it often affects people who live completely healthy lives. But regardless, the fact is that having information on the prevention is the best thing you can do so you do not have the same fate as the others. About 33% of all cancers can be prevented through lifestyle. This refers primarily to healthy eating and physical activity. Recommendations for cancer prevention: Eat 5 meals of fresh fruit daily (a meal has about 100 grams) Reduce salt intake (max 6 grams daily) Reduce your intake of red meat (associated with colon cancer) max 500 grams a week Fiber intake from a variety of foods such as cereals, fruits and vegetables Increase physical activity Reduce the consumption of alcohol (one drink a day for women, two for men) Do not sunbathe a lot and be sure to apply sunscreen when you are on the beach Keep a normal body weight (obesity is associated with increased risk of cancer of the esophagus, pancreas, and kidney) Do not smoke cigarettes Eat more plant foods instead of animal Breastfeed because breastfeeding has many benefits for the mother and the child Which foods are the best fighters against cancer? Fruits and non-starch vegetables -- against cancer of the lungs, mouth, larynx, esophagus and stomach Carotenoids -- against cancer of the lungs, mouth, larynx and esophagus Tomato -- against prostate cancer White and red onions -- against cancer of the stomach, colon, rectum Folic acid -- against pancreatic cancer Fibers -- against cancer of the colon and the rectum Milk and calcium -- cancer of the colon and the rectum Vitamin C -- against cancer of the esophagus You can even enter the vitamins and minerals through supplements, but despite the supplements the reason why natural food is always recommended is because the fruits and vegetables contain hundreds of other phytonutrients beside vitamins which are not found in multivitamin tablets. Some of these substances are: flavonoids (from citrus, berries fruits, wine and dark chocolate), various pigments with antioxidant activity (from grapes, eggplant, radishes and red cabbage), quercetin (from apples, onions, tea and wine) carotenoids (from carrots, melons and apricots), lycopene (from tomatoes), lutein for the eyes (from spinach and kale)… Natural Cancer-Fighting Spice Reduces Tumors By 81% Used in the ancient Chinese and Indian systems of medicine, curcumin is a naturally powerful anticancer compound that has been found to decrease brain tumor size in animals by 81 percent in more than 9 studies. A derivative of turmeric, curcumin is the pigment responsible for turmeric’s yellow-orange color. Each 100 grams of turmeric contains around 3 to 5 grams of curcumin, though turmeric is a also very powerful on its own. New studies are shedding light on curcumin, and illuminating its numerous benefits on cancer and other diseases. Researchers experimenting with curcumin in the treatment of a fatal brain cancer known as glioblastoma (GBMs) published their groundbreaking findings in the Journal of Nutritional Biochemistry in July. Adding scientific basis to previous findings surrounding the positive effects of curcumin, they showed that the compound dramatically decreased brain tumors in 9 out of the 11 studies examined by 81 percent. Furthermore, there was no evidence of toxicity, whereas chemotherapy and other cancer treatments often result in extreme side effects that are sometimes worse than the actual disease. Curcumin is not only effective against brain cancer, however. According to a study conducted in 2008 and published in Cancer Prevention Research, curcumin also inhibits the growth and spread of breast cancer cells by directly impacting the function of alpha6beta4 integrin, responsible for cancer progression. Another study, performed in 2010, found that curcumin also has the potential to target cancer stem cells. Following the wave of information of curcumin, researchers who posted their findings in Molecular Pharmacology classified curcumin as a pancreatic cancer cell inhibitor back in 2009. Even more interesting is the fact that in most of these studies the researchers concluded that curcumin may also aid many different types of cancer that were not included in the trials. While an amazing anticancer substance, studies have also pinpointed curcumin as a tool against more than 572 other diseases. Some of these include, in order of study count: oxidative stress, inflammation, DNA damage, lipid peroxidation, chemically-induced liver disease, Alzheimer’s disease, and liver fibrosis. Curcumin has even been found to influence more than 700 genes, which could explain its link to DNA repair.

Receptor on the surface of the cancer cells are negative, that means if those receptors are not present, the tumour we sent for histopathology for surgery or post biopsy. The incidence of Triple negative cases is 35% of all the breast cancers and the survival rate comes down from 95% in Triple positive cancers to Triple negative cancers to 75%. So this is the reason why the survival rate in Triple negative cases is very low. So maybe the simple reason triple negativity we have to give chemotherapy to these patients. Similarly if there is no treatment like hormonal therapy which we find in Triple positive cases.

What is the survival rate for colorectal cancer?

00:31
What is the survival rate for colorectal cancer? The survival rate for Colorectal Cancer depends, for the most part, on how far the cancer has spread in the body. For instance, in stage 0 colorectal cancer, the cancer is only found in the inner lining of the colon, and surgery to remove the cancer can essentially cure it completely. In stage 1 and 2 colorectal cancer, the cancer has spread to beyond the inner layer of the colon, and surgery may be needed to remove varying amounts of tissue around the affected area. While five-year survival rates are still relatively favorable, they have decreased to 90% to 95%; even so, these cases are essentially curable. Once the cancer leaves the colon and spreads to the lymph nodes (Stage 3), however, the cat's out of the bag, so to speak, and the five-year survival rate drops significantly.

How to Deal With Stage 3 Colon Cancer|colorectal cancer survival by stage

04:18
How to Deal With Stage 3 Colon Cancer|colorectal cancer survival by stage It is best to treat colon cancer, also known as colorectal cancer, in its early stages. There are 5 stages of colon cancer, ranging from 0 to 4. Stage 3, Dukes C colon cancer, is one of the more advanced stages. In it, tumors have spread beyond the colon to the lymph nodes. Stage 3 is divided into 3 subgroups. These subgroups range from least to most advanced with a survival rate ranging from 44 to 83 percent. Your doctor and cancer team will explain what this stage means, answer questions, provide treatment options and help you determine which plan will work best for you. 1 Deal with stage 3 colon cancer in steps. Try not to get ahead of yourself by looking at the entire picture. 2 Admit that you are sick. This is the first step in accepting and coping with a diagnosis of stage 3 colon cancer. It takes time to process this information and the new emotions you're feeling. You may become a little overwhelmed, frightened or anxious. These are normal feelings, so allow yourself a little time. 3 Stay positive. It's normal to feel down or depressed following a diagnosis of stage 3 colon cancer, but it's important to keep a positive outlook. When you find you can't fight the depression on your own, see a therapist or a counselor. Your physician can also prescribe medication that can reduce your feelings of depression. 4 Tell family and close friends about your stage 3 colon cancer diagnosis. Finding the right words is never easy, but it's best to be candid and honest about your disease. SUBSCRIBE TO MORE VIDEOS

Survival rate jumps among Korean cancer patients

02:26
Advances in Korea's medical field have apparently done a great deal of good for cancer patients in recent years. The country's five-year survival rate, a major indicator of how effectively cancer is being treated, has surged. Lee Unshin breaks down the contributing factors including government efforts, medical developments, and most importantly proactive attitude among patients. Korea is seeing remarkable progress in cancer treatment. According to data released by the Health Ministry on Tuesday, between 2010 and 2014, more than 70 percent of cancer patients survived for more than five years after their diagnosis... compared to just 54 percent of them a decade earlier from 2001 to 2005. As for new cancer diagnoses, the report showed decrease of 4-and-a-half-percent between 2012 and 2014. "With cancer survival rates going up, and the number of new cancer cases going down, the overall perception of the disease is slowly changing, especially among doctors, who have high hopes for the continued development of cancer treatments." "In recent years, we're seeing a rapid development of cancer drugs especially in fields like immunotherapy and target therapy. Also, Korea in particular is making speedy progress in cancer research and surgical skills." The doctor says early diagnosis is of the utmost importance… because treating any cancer at the beginning stage is often what saves a patient's life. But another factor is attitude. "Over the years I've treated countless patients who were well-informed about their condition, who were proactive and determined to fight cancer from the beginning. That's also an important reason more patients are surviving longer than 5 years." Meanwhile, the government has also expanded its support measures to improve care. A program announced by the health ministry back in September, but which has yet to start... will provide low-income cancer patients with treatment support worth up to 2,000 U.S. dollars a year for up to 3 consecutive years. For the terminally ill, nursing home care is also provided, which will benefit an estimated 1 in 4 terminally ill cancer patients by 2020. With these measures in place, and with medical science continuing to advance, the Korean government expects another significant rise in the cancer survival rate over the next few years.. Rising Host Resistance in Metastatic Cancer

14:50
Rising Host Resistance in Metastatic Cancer Medicine regards cancer and tumor as synonyms. Tumor is a parasite encroaching on a helpless host until its demise. A more refined analysis of cancer statistics reveals that cancer and tumor are not synonyms Cancer is an interaction between organism (host) and tumor. There are two kinds of cancer statistic: 1. Survival analysis 2. Hazard rate analysis. Note that hazard rate is about 10 times more sensitive than survival. Cancer theory is based mainly on relative or cause specific survival. In another presentations I show that these distributions are flawed and lead to false interpretations of cancer . I shall present now a statistical analysis of colon cancer which reveals the importance of hazard rate analysis, in the understanding of cancer. Cancer hazard rate generally declines with time. Why does it decline? As cancer progresses, tumor burden becomes heavier. We would expect that hazard rate should rise, yet it declines! This decline appears in all cancers irrespective of stage. According to cancer dogma, tumor is driven by random mutations. If so, hazard rate should rise. Yet it does not! I maintain the organism (host) hazard rate down. Host resists tumor progression. Host resistance = 1 - h[cancer]. It rises inn all tumors irrespective of stage. Hazard rate analysis indicates that cancer is an interaction between host and tumor. Declining hazard rate is unique to cancer and does not appear neither in health nor in other chronic diseases. As we age our host resistance declines . Host resistance operates in all cancers and stages. Here is an example : Colon cancer stage 4. How come that host resistance rises and cancer is incurable? Host and tumor is not the entire story. There is a hidden confounding process which actually drives cancer. Cancer is a viral disease, and tumor is a response to the virus. All along cancer progression host control of cancer improves, and his hazard rate declines. Yet his reserves continually dwindle. When exhausted patient dies in a state of cachexia.

How Liver Cancer Affects the Body

02:09
Liver cancer is an interesting disease. As with all cancers it affects the entire body, not just where it's centralized. The liver is one of the most important organs in your body. It is located on your right side just under the rib cage and diaphragm. It is the only internal organ that is capable of regenerating itself from as little as 25%. The liver has many functions. The first function is to produce bile, which helps aid digestion. After digestion, nutrients are delivered back to the liver for processing. Some nutrients, such as sugar, are retained by the liver and released if the body needs more energy. The liver also creates coagulation factors to help the body stop blood loss after an injury. Lastly the liver cleans blood by breaking down any toxic substance found inside the blood. Due to it’s many important functions, the liver is essential to sustaining life. Liver cancer, as the name suggests is cancer that affects the liver. Liver cancer often begins in the gallbladder or liver, but in some cases it can be transported through the bloodstream into the liver, where it begins to grow. The symptoms of liver cancer include weight loss, poor appetite, inflated abdomen, a lack of energy, discomfort in the abdomen, and fever. Often times the tumor has grown significantly before being discovered. Liver cancer can lead to liver failure, which can cause the skin and eyes to turn a yellowish color. To check for liver cancer doctors first examine the abdomen by feeling the liver to see if it is enlarged, and a blood sample is taken. If the doctor suspects a tumor they will then follow up with blood tests, an ultrasound, and a CT scan. If the cancer is not spread throughout the entire liver, the doctor may prefer to remove the infected part of the liver. With the liver’s extraordinary ability to regenerate, it can be back to normal size within a few months. If removal is not possible, treatments of radio-frequency ablation, chemotherapy, or alcohol injection may be administered. These can all help prolong the life of a cancer patient. After all, whether you are sick or not, death is inevitable. The pathophysiology of Hepatocellular carcinoma has not been definitively elucidated and is clearly a multifactorial event. Inflammation, necrosis, fibrosis, and ongoing regeneration characterize the cirrhotic liver and contribute to hepatocellular carcinoma development The 1-year survival rate for people with liver cancer is 44%. The 5-year survival rate is 17%. For the 43% of people who are diagnosed at an early stage, the 5-year survival rate is 31%. If liver cancer has spread to surrounding tissues or organs and/or the regional lymph nodes, the 5-year survival rate is 11%. If the cancer has spread to a distant part of the body, the 5-year survival rate is 3%. The liver is the football-sized organ in the upper right area of the belly. Symptoms are uncommon in the early stages of liver cancer. Later, symptoms may include weight loss, belly pain, vomiting, and yellowed skin. Treatments vary but may include removal of part of the liver, transplant, chemotherapy, and in some cases radiation. Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is a primary malignancy of the liver and occurs predominantly in patients with underlying chronic liver disease and cirrhosis. The cell(s) of origin are believed to be the hepatic stem cells, although this remains the subject of investigation.[1] Tumors progress with local expansion, intrahepatic spread, and distant metastases. HCC is now the third leading cause of cancer deaths worldwide, with over 500,000 people affected. The incidence of HCC is highest in Asia and Africa, where the endemic high prevalence of hepatitis B and hepatitis C strongly predisposes to the development of chronic liver disease and subsequent development of HCC. Latest Statistics Indicate Cancer Death Rates Continue to Drop

01:42
The American Cancer Society's annual cancer statistics report has found a steady decline in cancer mortality rates over the last two decades, adding up to a 20 percent drop in the overall risk of dying from cancer during that time span. The report, Cancer Statistics 2014, indicatess that progress has been greatest for middle-aged black men, among whom death rates have declined by approximately 50 percent. Despite the significant progress, black men continue to encounter the highest rate of cancer incidence and mortality rates when compared to all other ethnicities in the U.S. - nearly double those of Asian Americans, who have the lowest rates.

Improving Mesothelioma Survival Rate Malignant Pleural Mesothelioma Survival Rate Mesothelioma Docto

15:35
This Video "Improving Mesothelioma Survival Rate Malignant Pleural Mesothelioma Survival Rate Mesothelioma Docto" is good for those viewers who want to know about mesothelioma survival rates, diffuse malignant mesothelioma, malignant pleural mesothelioma survival rate, mesothelioma cancer attorney, pleural mesothelioma stages, mesothelioma doctors, mesothelioma lawsuit, mesothelioma attorney, mesothelioma lawyer, mesothelioma treatment, mesothelioma prognosis, malignant mesothelioma, pleural mesothelioma, mesothelioma life expectancy, peritoneal mesothelioma, mesothelioma, mesothelioma causes, mesothelioma facts, mesothelioma law firm etc. Improving Mesothelioma Survival Rate Mesothelioma survival rates are steadily improving due to new treatments being developed. Survival rate statistics provide more information to patients about their prognosis. Estimating Mesothelioma Survival Time Patients with mesothelioma are surviving longer than ever before. One key component of survival rates are the statistics that support them. These statistics help explain a patient’s prognosis and determine their outcome. They accomplish this by examining how long other patients with a similar diagnosis survive. Underreported Factors Affecting Survival Rates: Current Survival Results Survival rates don’t always reflect current data. Doctors examine the results of people treated in the past in order to provide patients with survival rates. These survival rates only offer a glimpse into the past, not the future. New Treatment Options Survival rates cannot account for new treatment options. In many cases these treatments were not available at the time the data was collected. Mesothelioma treatment options have been developing quickly through clinical trials in the past decade. Get connected to clinical trials for innovative treatments. Misleading Statistics Survival rates can be misleading because they include patients who didn’t receive treatment or were treated by general oncologists rather than mesothelioma specialists. Patients and families should remember that all statistics (including survival rates) have a degree of error. While mesothelioma survival rates tend to be low, overall survival rates are constantly improving due to innovative treatment options. Location Doctors record survival rates at yearly intervals to provide a guideline for life expectancy. However, many patients live longer or shorter than these intervals. Mesothelioma survival rates based on location of the tumor may be misinterpreted since this disease can be easily mistaken for other types of cancer. If a patient is correctly diagnosed before the cancer reaches later stages, survival rates may not apply. A study by the National Cancer Institute concluded the one-year survival rate for pleural and peritoneal mesothelioma patients is relatively even at about 40 percent. However, following the second year after diagnosis, survival rates for pleural patients drop considerably (11 percent), while survival rates for peritoneal patients only experienced a small decrease (35 percent). This suggests it is equally hard to detect pleural and peritoneal mesothelioma early enough to effectively treat the disease. These numbers also show treatment for a peritoneal patient is more effective than treatment for a pleural patient. Due to the rarity of pericardial mesothelioma, there are no conclusive studies to show survival rates for these patients. It is only known that the majority of patients (90 percent) with pericardial mesothelioma were diagnosed after death. Stage Survival rates based on stage are particularly important for determining a prognosis. There is a strong correlation between mesothelioma stage and patient life span. Patients diagnosed at the early stages of mesothelioma (with less metastasis) have significantly longer survival rates. At age 65 or older, survival rates of mesothelioma patients are 5 times better at stage 1 than at stage 4. Mesothelioma is more often diagnosed in the later stages because of the lack of specific symptoms of mesothelioma. Survival rates at this stage are lower because the cancer is more advanced and more difficult to treat. However, there are numerous treatment options for patients at any stage. New, noninvasive treatments, like chemotherapy and radiation, are frequently being developed and improved in ongoing clinical trials. Cell Type & Histology Mesothelioma can develop as one of three histological cells types or variations: epithelioid, biphasic or sarcomatoid. Cell type is an important factor in survival rates. Generally, epithelioid mesothelioma has the best survival rate because it reacts better to treatment. Sarcomatoid has the poorest rate due to its ability to spread quickly. Beat the Odds - Improve Your Survival Rate Survival rates are used to give patients an approximation of how long people with a similar diagnosis survived.

Advanced Treatments For Liver Cancer

01:34
Most liver cancer is secondary or metastatic, meaning it started somewhere else in the body. Primary liver cancer, which starts in the liver, accounts for about 2% of cancers in the U.S. Most people don't experience signs or symptoms in the early stages of primary liver cancer. “Although it’s vitally important and you can’t live without your liver, you can remove up to 80% of a normal liver safely with low mortality rates and the liver will actually grow back to normal size,” says Dr. Mark Bloomston, a surgical gastrointestinal oncologist on Lee Memorial Health System’s medical staff. Dr. Bloomston says this regenerative ability opens the opportunity for advanced treatment techniques: like newly developed staged procedures involving chemotherapy. “We can put radioactive beads into the liver, we can do procedures to trick the liver into thinking it already had surgery. So the good side will start to grow and advance,” says Dr. Bloomston. In the coming decades doctors hope the number of liver cancer cases in this country will drop. Hepatitis C is a driving force behind this disease which is also impacted by alcoholic cirrhosis and morbid obesity. These are lifestyle issues which can be addressed through awareness. Until then, advanced techniques offer the best chance for a cure. “And so patients commonly live for many years after liver surgery,” says Dr. Bloomston. In general, survival rates are higher for people who can have surgery to remove their cancer, regardless of the stage. What Is Survival Rates Of Mesothelioma

02:02
About 40 percent of patients with mesothelioma survive the first year after diagnosis. That survival rate depends on many factors, including age, cancer stage, cancer type, race and gender. Long-term survivors attribute their success to treatment from a mesothelioma specialist, alternative medicine and nutritional changes. How is survival rate measured? Researchers describe the mesothelioma survival rate in several ways. They usually talk about it in terms of one-year survival, the percentage of people who survive for a year after diagnosis. Through their studies, they also look at longer survival times, including the number of people who live two years, three years and five years. Average mesothelioma survival rates Mesothelioma claimed nearly 30,000 American lives between 1999 and 2010. About 40 percent of U.S. patients live to the one year mark. By the second year, about 20 percent of patients are still alive. And by the third year, the number is 8 percent. Learn More About Your Survival Rate View our free services and resources designed to help you improve your prognosis. Learn More Factors That Affect Survival Rate Many patients want to know if mesothelioma is curable, but survival rates for mesothelioma cancer vary by the patient's age, gender, race and several other factors. The location, stage and cell type of the cancer, as well as your overall health, have the strongest influence on your prognosis. Below is a breakdown of some common factors and how each correlates to a patient's survival rate: • Age • Gender • Race • Cancer Site • Location • Stage • Histology • Age Overall, older mesothelioma patients have a much lower survival rate than younger ones. More than 50 percent of patients diagnosed before the age of 50 live one year, but less than 33 percent of patients 75 or older live the same amount of time. Rates are similar for long-term survival. Younger patients have a 20 percent chance of surviving a decade; older individuals have a 1 percent chance. Mesothelioma Deaths by Age Range: 1999-2005 This difference is largely because younger patients are eligible for more intensive treatments like surgery. Older individuals may not be candidates for these procedures because of poor overall health or a high risk of complications. Elderly people often manage one or more chronic medical conditions in addition to mesothelioma, such as diabetes, heart disease and COPD. Survival is generally better for younger people because they are less likely to have serious conditions that may make them ineligible for effective treatment options. It's rare when someone younger than 50 receives a diagnosis of asbestos-related cancer. The average age at diagnosis is 60, and from 1999 to 2010, nearly 80 percent of Americans who died from mesothelioma were older than 65. Mesothelioma Survival Rates by Age When researchers break down survival rates by age, it's easy to see that the long-term outlook is best for patients diagnosed at a young age. National Cancer institute data show that while 43 percent of patients younger than 45 survive five years after diagnosis, that drops sharply — to 14.3 percent — for patients between the ages of 45 and 54. Overall, 5.7 percent of patients ages 65 and older at diagnosis survive after five years. Survival Rates After Surgical Treatment Mesothelioma survival rates are higher among patients who had surgery to remove their tumor. This is because mesothelioma surgeries slows down the tumor’s ability to spread. During surgery blood vessels are also rerouted to prevent metastasis through the blood stream. There are 3 surgeries that have greatly increased survival rates: • Extrapleural pneumonectomy (EPP) – Pleural mesothelioma • Pleurectomy/decortication (P/D) – Pleural mesothelioma • Cytoreductive surgery with HIPEC – Peritoneal mesothelioma Patients eligible for these surgeries are usually those who are in stage 1 or 2. However, late stage patients who apply for clinical trials may be eligible for surgical treatment. Patients who have a combined treatment of surgery and other treatments, such as radiation or chemotherapy, experienced marked improvements in survival. The common survival times after one of these surgeries is typically double the survival time of patients who didn’t have surgery. Jacob Jager Jacob Jager was diagnosed with pleural mesothelioma in 2010. He is now cancer-free thanks to a pleurectomy with decortication and post-operative radiation. Jacob is now enjoying the time granted to him with his family in California. Beat the Odds - Improve Your Survival Rate Survival rates are used to give patients an approximation of how long people with a similar diagnosis survived. They are based on a range of factors from tumor location to the patient’s age. Survival rates may give patients a clearer picture of their diagnosis so they can develop a treatment plan best suited for them. “I knew I was a fighter and could handle whatever happened.” – Mesothelioma Survivor.

How to Cope with Testicular Cancer | Testicular Cancer

03:16
Watch more How to Understand Testicular Cancer videos: http://www.howcast.com/videos/511978-How-to-Cope-with-Testicular-Cancer-Testicular-Cancer Cancer of any type is always concerning to patients and anxiety-provoking, and naturally so. When I see a patient with testicular cancer, the first thing I try to do is reassure them because if there's any type of cancer to have testicular cancer is probably the best one to have. It is highly treatable for patients who undergo the appropriate treatments and the appropriate followup. Therefore it is very rare that we lose a patient to testicular cancer. The survival rate for testicular cancer is well over 95%. The patients who have cancer that is confined to the testicle and has not spread anywhere else, the survival rate is essentially 100%. Even in cases of advanced testicular cancer where cancer has spread to the abdomen, the chest, the brain, such as in the case of Lance Armstrong, many of those patients, well over 80-85% of those patients, will survive the disease. The first step in reassuring patients is to explain to them that it is highly treatable. As I said, if you're going to have any type of cancer, testicular cancer is probably one of the better ones to have. Regardless, in many cases it's still devastating to patients. Patients still have to cope with the fact that they may have loss of the testicle. They may have issues with fertility or having a hard time having children afterwards. For that reason we can also counsel patients to perform something called sperm banking where they donate their sperm ahead of time and have it saved in case they want to have children down the road. We also have to address the fact that they may require additional therapies. Other than surgery, they may require chemotherapy, which can be difficult to go through as well. In some cases, it can be a drawn out process to undergo treatment of testicular cancer. However, the way I explain it to patients. There's a light at the end of the tunnel and once you get through those treatments, then you know that there's a very high likelihood that you're going to be around for the rest of your life, to share that time with your families. In order to cope with these issues while you're undergoing treatments, often cancer centers or physicians that you see will be able to guide you to support groups that may be available to you. Support groups that include other testicular cancer patients. I think it's very helpful to talk to other people who have gone through treatments for these disease process and to see that they're doing well. These people, these support groups provide great resources for you to not only understand your disease, understand what you're going through, but also provide emotional support for what you're going through. There are many resources available to you if you are diagnosed with the disease. As I said, unlike other cancers, which may sometimes be a death sentence, testicular cancer is highly survivable and highly curable if you do all the appropriate measures that are necessary.
