Cataracts in Dogs | 5 Year old Blind Stray Chihuahua

Cataracts in Dogs | 5 Year old Blind Stray Chihuahua Should Your Get Pet Insurance? :http://bit.ly/1Eghr2x What Are Cataracts? ASPCA logoA cataract is an opacity in the lens of a dog’s eye, causing him to have blurry vision. If the cataract is small, it won’t likely disturb the dog’s vision too much, but cataracts must be monitored because the thicker and denser they become, the more likely it is they will lead to blindness. What Causes Cataracts? Cataracts can develop from disease, old age and trauma to the eye, but inherited conditions are the most common cause. Cataracts may be present at birth or develop when a dog is very young-between one and three years of age. A high-incidence of cataracts is also often attributed to diabetes. How Can I Tell if My Dog Is Developing Cataracts? If your dog’s eyes look cloudy or bluish-gray, you should take him to the vet for an exam. Be aware, though, that it’s natural for a dog’s lens to become cloudy, or gray, with age. This condition, called nuclear sclerosis, doesn’t put a dog’s vision in as much danger as cataracts might, and treatment isn’t usually recommended. However, any cloudiness at all in your pet’s eye is a sign for you to take him to the vet. Continue reading below... What Happens When a Cataract Goes Untreated? An untreated cataract may “luxate” or slip from the tissue that holds it in place, freeing it to float around in the eye where it may settle and block natural fluid drainage. This can lead to glaucoma, which can cause permanent blindness. Cataracts may also begin to dissolve after some time, causing deep, painful inflammation in the eye. Which Dogs Are Prone to Cataracts? Though dogs of all ages and breeds can develop cataracts, they are more commonly found in Smooth Fox Terriers, American Cocker Spaniels, Havanese, Bichon Frise, Silky Terriers, Miniature and Standard Poodles, Miniature Schnauzers, and Boston Terriers. Dogs with diabetes are also especially prone. How Are Cataracts Diagnosed? A preliminary eye exam by your veterinarian will tell you whether you are dealing with a cataract or another condition that causes cloudiness in the eye. You should then consult with a veterinary ophthalmologist to determine the extent of the cataract and what steps to take to manage the problem. How Can I Help Preserve My Dog’s Vision? In most cases, cataracts cannot be prevented, but there are steps to take to ensure that your dog’s vision can be preserved, especially if they are caused by a medical condition like diabetes. Examine your dog’s eyes regularly. Take your dog to the vet if his eyes look cloudy or bluish-gray. Take your dog to the vet if you suspect she’s having trouble seeing. If possible, find out the medical history of your dog’s parents, since cataracts are often inherited. Be aware of any conditions your dog has that may cause cataracts, such as diabetes or eye trauma. http://pets.webmd.com/dogs/cataracts-dogs

Blind Dog's Eye Surgery (Removal) Makes for a MUCH Happier Pet

07:26
RIP Rudy 11/14/2016 Delaying surgery with medication for my dog's glaucoma might not have been a wise decision. I was giving him two different eye-drops 2-3 times daily and that seemed to work for a few years.. I could tell his eyes bothered him a bit lately, even with medicine, but a few weeks after the surgery he seemed like a young dog again in spirit. Besides using area rugs of different sizes, shapes and textures and using verbal commands like right and left when we walk or play fetch, living with a blind dog hasn't been that difficult. Is your Dog Diabetic? Signs Of a Diabetic Dog

05:02
Is your dog diabetic? Diabetes in dogs is a complex disease caused by either a lack of hormone insulin or an inadequate response to insulin. The most common form of the disease in dogs is Type 1. Here are the signs of diabetic dog. If you see any of these signs you should take your dog to a vertrinarian. Because you love your dog and should take care of your four legged companion. Signs of a Diabetic dog: 1- Change in appetite: if you see any unusual change in appetite of your dog, it may be a sign your dog has diabetes. Loss in appetite not all the time refer to as a sign of diabetes. It can be due to an Illness, Injury, your dog has become older, stress or your dog may have had something it should not eat. 2- Excessive thirst: If your dog is thirsty all the time or drinks so much of water through the day, you should not ignore it. It might be a sign that your dog is diabetic and needs your help. There might be some other reasons your dog drinking so much of water which includes Kidney Problems, Hypercalcemia, Pometra or Cushing's Diseases 3- Weight loss Another sign of a diabetic dog is unusual weight loss. If your dog is losing weight it probably is diabetic. Besides any change in diet could sometimes cause weight loss in your dog. Losing weight in small amount is normal in geriatic pets in their growth process. 4- Increased urination Increase in urination, also referrede to as polyuria, is often refered to as symptom for diabeties in a dog.changes in your dog's bathroom habits may indicate a health concern but not always.but it is wise to consult your vet if you notice your dog urinating frequently to point out any underlying problems. 5- Unusually sweet-smelling or fruity breath if you notice unusually sweet or fruity smelling dog's breath, especially accompanied by your dog drinking and peeing more than usual, then it is defintely an alarming sign and an indicator of diabetes.so better to consult your vet rightaway to determine the underlying causes. 6- Lethargy if your four legged is napping more and have become lethargic than normal, this could as well be a sign of canine diabetes.lack of energy, weakeness, head tilting, drunkedness and restlessness, all these are signs you should never ignore as are classic signs of diabetes in dogs. 7- Dehydration dehyration is a dangerous condition where the tissues are low on water and could indicate canine diabetes.tacky or dry gums are great indicators of dehydration.another way to check if your dog is dehydrated is by pinching the skin, if the skin will not snap back quickly then get your dog to the vet to make sure your buddy isn't diabetic. 8- Urinary tract infections repeated urinary tract infections could also signal diabetes in dogs.because there is more sugar in the urine, therefore greater are the chances that bacteria will dwell in your pooch's bladder causing this uncomfortable condition more often. 9- Vomiting vomitting which is one of the side effects of ketoacidosis, is another sign to indicate diabetes in dogs. If you see your dog vomitting, it probably is diabetic and needs your care. Its better to seek a vetrinarian, because you love your dog. 10- Cataract formation, blindness diabetes can cause the formation of catarcts which gives eyes milky or cloudy appearance. But cataracts leading to blindness is a sure sign of diabetes in canines. 11- Chronic skin infections: Another common symptom in diabetic dogs is different chronic infections. Itchy dog skin or irritated skin might indicated that your is diabetic. Dog Fleas are also the other reason for dog with irritated skin. Its better to consult a vet and take care of your dog. Dog Cataract Surgery | MedVet | What to Expect | Veterinary Ophthalmology

Dog Cataract Surgery | MedVet | What to Expect | Veterinary Ophthalmology Learn more: http://bit.ly/1kwuZCP MedVet Medical & Cancer Centers for Pets strives to provide the best compassionate ophthalmology care. The ophthalmology department at MedVet Medical & Cancer Centers for Pets is highly equipped with the best surgical equipment. All of our doctors have completed an additional four years of training after veterinary school, and have undergone rigorous testing to become board certified veterinary ophthalmologists. The doctors are supported by registered veterinary technicians, who have also undergone additional ophthalmology training. Cataracts are any opacity of the lens or its surrounding capsule. This results in a gray or white appearance to the center of the eye, visible through the pupil. It is common for both eyes to be impacted by cataracts, but not necessarily at the same time. Cataracts are a very common eye disease in pets of all ages, and can be due to various causes. The most common causes include diabetes, inherited or genetic cataracts, age, intraocular inflammation, trauma, and exposure to chemicals. Cataract surgery is the only way to remove cataracts and restore vision. At MedVet, the initial ophthalmic exam will be performed on your pet with you in the exam room. Some initial tests will be performed, and drops will be instilled to dilate the pupil for a thorough evaluation. Once the pupils are adequately dilated, the doctor will assess vision. Depending on the severity of your pet's cataracts, they may or may not still have vision. Specialized instruments that provide light and magnification are utilized to examine the intraocular structures in the front of the eye. A complete retinal exam is then performed. All of these tests are identical to you seeing your own ophthalmologist. Other tests included in the initial exam are a tear test to evaluate for dry eye, and tonometry to check for glaucoma, both of which are important in determining your pet's prognosis for cataract surgery. An ocular ultrasound to evaluate for a retinal detachment, and an electroretinogram, also known as an ERG, will be offered to evaluate retinal function. Surgeries are scheduled on a separate day than your initial exam, so that a general physical examination and blood work can be completed to ensure that the risk of anesthesia is as low as possible. The day of surgery drop off your pet early in the morning, so that we may adequately prepare them for surgery. After anesthesia induction, a technician will prepare the periocular area for surgery by clipping the hair around the eye or eyes to keep the surgical field sterile. The eyes are irrigated to remove any excess hair or discharge. Once in the operating room, your dog is placed in a special pillow to position their head for surgery and all possible monitoring equipment. The eye is draped and an eyelid speculum keeps the eyelids open. Surgery is completed under an operating microscope with fine microsurgical instruments. The cataract is removed using the same technology as human cataract surgery. This is called phacoemulsification. After the cataract is completely removed, an artificial lens is replaced to restore normal vision. The success rate for cataract surgery is usually between 95 and 98 percent. However, if the stage of the cataract is advanced, the surgical success rate could be lower. Patients are sighted immediately after surgery, and are usually discharged the same day. Complications of the surgery, although uncommon, include glaucoma, retinal detachment, inflammation, and infection. Your doctor will discuss any possible complications with you before and after the surgery. Dogs are sent home with an Elizabethan collar to prevent them from rubbing their eyes. The E collar can easily be removed with the Velcro attachment on the outside to allow daily cleaning. Your pet will be able to sleep, eat, and drink with the E collar in place. At home care involves applying eye drops several times daily. Four times daily for the first two weeks, then slowly decreasing the frequency of medications over time. You will be instructed to apply a warm compress to the eyes a few times daily, to eliminate discharge that can accumulate. This also helps to keep your dog comfortable and clean. Follow-up appointments are important to help maintain sight and to help prevent complications. The doctor will recommend a follow up at two weeks after surgery, at 2-3 months, and then at least biannual evaluations will be recommended. The frequency of medications is determined at each follow-up visit, but most patients are off all topical medications by 4-6 months after surgery. The cause of cataracts in dogs are usually inherited, age related, or diabetes. The overall success rate for surgery is well over 90 percent. Cataract surgeries are often performed in both eyes, and cataracts do not recur after surgery. Lastly, patients are released the same day as surgery.

Labradoodle - Labrador Retriever Poodle Mix Guide dogs, (also known as service animals, assistance animals or colloquially as seeing-eye dogs), are assistance dogs trained to lead blind and visually impaired people around obstacles. Although dogs can be trained to navigate various obstacles, many are (red–green) color blind and are not capable of interpreting street signs. The human does the directing, based on skills acquired through previous mobility training. The handler might be likened to an aircraft's navigator, who must know how to get from one place to another, and the dog is the pilot, who gets them there safely. In several countries, guide dogs, along with most service and hearing dogs, are exempt from regulations against the presence of animals in places such as restaurants and public transportation. Guide dog breeds are chosen for temperament and trainability. Early on, trainers began to recognize which breeds produced dogs most appropriate for guide work; today, Golden Retrievers, Labradors, and German Shepherds are most likely to be chosen by service animals facilities, although other breeds such as Standard Poodles, Collies, Border Collies, Australian Shepherds, and Vizslas may also be selected. Crosses such as Golden Retriever/Labrador (which combine the sensitivity of the Golden Retriever and the tolerance of the Labrador Retriever)[9] and Labradoodles (Labrador/Poodles bred to help reduce allergens as all breeds shed but levels vary) are also common. The most popular breed used globally today is the Labrador Retriever. This breed has a good range of size, is easily kept due to its short coat, is generally healthy and has a gentle but willing temperament.[

Ocu-Glo Clinical Study Results for Treatment for Cataracts in Dogs

01:21
http://www.aldoo.org As pet parents whose dog takes Ocu-Glo every day, we had previously relied on our own experience with Ocu-Glo and the anecdotal evidence by other pet parents that the product was effective in supporting eye health. Our own dog has PRA, progressive retinal atrophy, and we believe that Ocu-Glo has helped slow down the progression of the disease and has supported her eye health for the past two years. She can still see despite several doctors' prognoses that she would have been blind by now. The product was developed by two veterinary ophthalmologists and contains every ingredient known to support eye health in dogs. Research existed up to now that showed the product was effective. However, the study which is highlighted in the video, is clinical proof that Ocu-Glo is effective in treating cataracts in dogs as a result of canine diabetes. This was a clinical study, produced with a test and control group. Ocu-glo has been effective for our dog, but now there is proof that it works for dogs with diabetes, too. Visit our site to read the heartwarming testimonials about the product as well as our dog's journey to maintaining her eyesight with Ocu-Glo.

Diabetes in dogs

02:01
Diabetes in Dogs: Symptoms and Treatment Diabetes in dogs is a complex disease caused by either a lack of the hormone insulin or an inadequate response to insulin. After a dog eats, his digestive system breaks food into various components, including glucose-which is carried into his cells by insulin, a hormone secreted by the pancreas. When a dog does not produce insulin or cannot utilize it normally, his blood sugar levels elevate. The result is hyperglycemia, which, if left untreated, can cause many complicated health problems for a dog. It is important to understand, however, that diabetes is considered a manageable disorder-and many diabetic dogs can lead happy, healthy lives. What Type of Diabetes Do Most Dogs Get? Diabetes can be classified as either Type 1 (lack of insulin production) or Type II (impaired insulin production along with an inadequate response to the hormone.) The most common form of the disease in dogs is Type 1, insulin-dependent diabetes, which occurs when the pancreas is incapable of producing or secreting adequate levels of insulin. Dogs who have Type I require insulin therapy to survive. Type II diabetes is found in cats and is a lack of normal response to insulin. What Are the Symptoms of Diabetes in Dogs? The following symptoms should be investigated as they could be indicators that your dog has diabetes: • Change in appetite • Excessive thirst/increase in water consumption • Weight loss • Increased urination • Unusually sweet-smelling or fruity breath • Lethargy • Dehydration • Urinary tract infections • Vomiting • Cataract formation, blindness • Chronic skin infections

Blue Parish - blind weimaraner dog with diabetes, pancreatitis and gas

01:56
Blue went blind two years ago due to us not being able to control his diabetes. He had other illnesses that were not picked up by the local vet. Luckily we got him to a specialist just in time. He got sick in January 2010, it's only now we feel confident that his illnesses are under something like control. Join him on his journey on facebook. You will be shocked by how thin he got but overjoyed that he is now on the road to recovery. Thank you for watching.

His star wars pal, Jedi, joined the family as a puppy and was trained to alert Luke's parents to any emergencies in his glucose levels.

The vet told us there was nothing that could be done until his eyes had fully crusted over. A few months down the line he was totally blind & we were told the operation would cost between 4 and 5 Thousand pounds. This was an unafordable option & in desperation I started to search the internet for another solution. I found this product & decided to try it. I have not yet told the vets I am using it. The dog is on his 4th bottle & can see clearly in daylight & only has problems with steps in darker surroundings. The vets checked him last week & confirmed that the swelling behind his eyes had gone & they were clearing up. I am waiting for his eyes to get a bit better at night before I tell the vet what I am using on his eyes. This way they will hopefully recommend the drops knowing that they work. If I had heard of them before searching the internet then maybe my dog wouldn’t have had to go blind before I did something about it.” K. Our dog Dime has diabetes and is nearly blinded by cataracts in his eyes (he is only 7 yrs old btw). When he got sick and started losing his sight, our cat Montana started to lick his eyes at least once a day. I finally got it on video :) . Animals are so amazing. they can sense when something is wrong and love unconditionally.
