However, there are certain foods that are really bad for you and can quickly increase your “bad” cholesterol levels and dramatically increase your risk for heart disease, a heart attack or stroke. So make sure you take a look... However, let’s first start with the 5 worsts, clinically proven - “high cholesterol” foods that you must avoid! Dairy I’ve been saying this for over 2 decades - Milk is for babies and cow milk is for baby cows! Additionally, 99% of dairy products are pasteurized, which kills any benefits milk could have. Not to mention, the toxins, hormones and drugs these animals are given are highly concentrated in the milk - which goes inside of YOU! All of these factors, plus the saturated fat inside milk, increases your cholesterol and stresses your liver. It doesn’t matter if it’s whole, low or nonfat dairy, it’s all the same. Unfortunately, this also includes two of my favorite foods, ice cream and cheese! Fast Foods It doesn’t matter if it’s a burger, tacos, french fries, pizza or anything else - they’re all high in carbohydrates, hydrogenated and saturated fats, using unhealthy and toxic proteins. It’s cheap food. It may be easy and good for your wallet, but it’s bad for your health and cholesterol levels and you’ll pay the price later in life. Animal Protein The saturated fats and “marble fat” found in meat, pork, poultry and shell-fish is horrible for your health and cholesterol levels. I’ve noticed even grass-fed meat and free-range poultry can still cause high cholesterol in some of my patients, especially the “sensitive” ones. Limit your intake and focus more on vegetable proteins and fish - especially wild-caught salmon. Eggs Eggs can be good or bad. All the cholesterol and fat is located in the egg YOLK, which is why most “experts” say you should only consume egg whites. However, most of the nutrients, antioxidants and half the essential amino acids (protein) are also found in the yolk. The problem is when you COOK the yolk - such as hard-boiled, scrambled and fried eggs. The heat oxidizes the egg and damages both the structure of the protein and fat. So the healthiest way to eat eggs is raw or lightly cooked, so the yolk is still runny. Don’t fry it with butter or vegetable fats. And make sure it’s organic, free-range eggs. Baked Foods/Carbs (Snacks Too) Baked foods such as muffins, cakes, breads, donuts, croissants, rolls, cookies, danishes, scones, pie, etc… The types of foods most people eat in the morning when they’re in a rush, or with their coffee or at work as a snack… These are all bad because they contain hydrogenated and saturated fats, as well as dairy. Not to mention, they’re high in simple carbohydrates and sugars. “Bad” fats increase cholesterol. “Bad” fats + carbs/sugar REALLY increase your cholesterol and lead to numerous health issues. Coconut Milk Yogurt with Oats and Cacao Nibs the Ultimate Treat for Digestive and Heart Health

A dairy-free coconut milk yogurt that’s loaded with good probiotics and topped with cacao nibs, and oats. If you love the tangy, creamy taste of yogurt but can’t handle the dairy, there is a simple, delicious solution to getting some probiotic goodness the non-dairy way. Try this simple coconut yogurt recipe with all of its amazing health benefits. If you wish to you can substitute the coconut milk with almond or rice milk. Coconut milk Yogurt Ingredients • 2 high-quality probiotic capsules • 1 14-ounce (414ml) can of smooth, creamy full-fat coconut milk (containing guar gum, if possible) • 100g of oats (Optional) • 1 teaspoon of cacao nibs (Optional) Will make 1 1/2 cups of yogurt. Instructions 1. Vigorously shake the can of coconut milk. Then pour the coconut milk into a clean glass jar or bowl. 2. Empty the contents of the probiotic capsules into the jar/bowl. Use a wooden spoon to mix the contents together. 3. Cover the top of the jar/bowl with a cheesecloth, and seal tight with a rubber band. 4. Leave the jar/bowl at a warm temperature (75 degrees F / 23 C or so). Wait 24-48 hours, as desired. The warmer it is and the longer you wait, the thicker and tangier the yogurt will be. 5. Refrigerate the yogurt for one hour to thicken. If you use coconut milk that does not contain guar gum, the yogurt might have separated into two layers: Creamy yogurt on top, with water underneath. In this case, simply scoop out the creamy layer. 6. Sprinkle oats and cacao nibs on top and serve. The yogurt will keep in the refrigerator for 4-7 days. Yogurt, whether made with dairy or non-dairy milk, is a thick, fermented milk product packed with high concentrations of good, gut-healthy probiotic bacteria, as well as vitamins and minerals. Put together, these components help regulate intestinal health, build stronger bones, and enhance immunity. Additional benefits associated with consumption of probiotics include lower blood pressure and cholesterol, weight loss, and digestive health. Granted, it isn't pumpkin season but we can make do with the canned variety for now and buy the real thing in the fall, which will be here before we know it. I've been playing around with this recipe for awhile now and finally feel like I nailed it. It's got a great combination of sweet, savory and exotic flavors. The egg yolk gives it an almost ice cream like quality... the coconut milk... a nice smoothness, and the pecans add an element of homemade pie. Of course, the pumpkin and spices make up the earthy base where all the other flavors can dance around. It's an all around symphony of delight! (Can you tell I love this one, people?) Here's the recipe for an individual meal or two snack-sized portions: INGREDIENTS 1 cup frozen pumpkin puree (I put in ice cube trays) 1 frozen banana (be sure to unpeel before you freeze) 1 cup light coconut milk (While I'm usually all about the fat, in this instance, the full fat variety would tip this smoothie over the 700 calorie mark!) 1 raw egg yolk from fresh pastured eggs 5 pecan halves Dashes of cinnamon, nutmeg, vanilla extract, and sea salt DIRECTIONS Pour 1 cup of light coconut milk into blender. Chop up your frozen banana and add to milk. Blend till smooth. Add in ½ of your frozen pumpkin with spices. Blend till smooth. Add other ½ of frozen pumpkin. Blend till smooth. Other risk factors include diabetes, high cholesterol or triglycerides, alcohol abuse, gastric bypass surgery, certain medications and malnutrition. There is no standard treatment for fatty liver but Johns Hopkins University reports that weight loss can help prevent and treat a fatty liver. Fruits, Vegetables and Whole Grains A healthy diet is rich in fruits, vegetables and whole grains. Fruits, vegetables and whole grains are naturally low in calories and fat but high in fiber. According to the American Dietetic Association fibrous foods increase the feeling of fullness that can prevent overeating and subsequent weight gain. Fiber-rich diets can also prevent type 2 diabetes, a risk factor for a fatty liver. Protein and Dairy The best proteins to support weight maintenance and weight loss are from lean sources like poultry, eggs, soy, lean meats, fish, seafood, beans and legumes. Excess fat and calories can be reduced by removing all visible fat and skin from meat and poultry prior to cooking and using healthy methods to cook foods like grilling, steaming, broiling, baking, roasting and poaching. The healthiest dairy products include low-fat or non-fat milk, yogurt and cheese. Low-Cholesterol Foods Cholesterol is a type of fat found in animal products. A report in the August 7, 2011 issue of the "World Journal of Gastroenterology," recommends a diet that is low in saturated and trans fats. Foods high in omega fatty acids such as fatty fish, olive oil and nuts are recommended to help treat fatty liver. The report also recommends foods low in simple sugars and high-fructose corn syrup. Non-alcoholic Beverages Alcohol puts stress on the liver and is closely tied to liver disease. According to the California Pacific Medical Center as little as one glass of beer or wine a week can contribute to a fatty liver. The ALF encourages individuals with a fatty liver to avoid all alcohol. Examples of non-alcoholic beverages include water, juice, soda, tea, coffee, sports drinks and milk. We know some products are really dangerous for our health, and other products are good for us as they are healthy. It turns out it’s not so simple and some of the most promoted and popular foods can, in fact, harm you. Never eat these 10 dangerous foods for the sake of your own health and the health of your family. Even if you see the juice labels “not from concentrate” or “100% pure”, don't let this fool you. Juice, after being squeezed from different fruits, is kept in huge vacuum-sealed tanks where it can sit for up to a year before being packaged! And by that time, the juice has lost all its flavor, which is why manufacturers have to add artificial flavoring to make it taste fruity again. In most cases, cereals are loaded with refined carbohydrates and sugar. Even if the label assures you that it's fat-free and whole grain, check the list of ingredients. You'll most likely see that the product is full of sugar. Despite common belief, most yogurts don't contain probiotic bacteria since the process of pasteurization kills all these microorganisms. When consumed, trans-fats in ice-cream can cause high cholesterol, stroke, heart disease, and even cancer. Ice cream is also loaded with sugar, artificial flavors, and synthetic preservatives. And if it’s pink, purple, or red, it’s most likely been colored with cochineal extract or carmine, additives which can cause bad allergic reactions. Lets discuss some of the amazing health benefits eating honey and bananas regularly can provides. 1. First, eating honey and bananas will supply our body with a tremendous amount of health promoting antioxidants. In fact, this combination is an antioxidant powerhouse. Studies have shown that eating raw honey consistently can help to raise the levels of antioxidants in our body. They are loaded with powerful and potent antioxidants known as polyphenols which can reduce the risk of a number of different health ailments. Raw honey also contains a health promoting antioxidant known as pinocembrin, a power flavonoid. Bananas also contain powerful dietary antioxidants. They are loaded with catechins, which can help with the elimination of free radicals in the body it prevent damage caused by them and disease. 2. This mixture can also support heart health and promote the overall health of our heart a number of different ways. Honey has many different benefits for our heart. Both provide different health promoting abilities, and when combined together, become an immunity and digestive boosting powerhouse. When choosing yogurt, try to consume plain, unsweetened yogurt if possible to keep down calories and sugar. Greek yogurt would also be a great choice. As for honey, raw organic varieties are best as this has the highest antioxidant concentrations. Now, lets discuss some of the incredible health benefits of consuming honey and yogurt consistently. 1. First, raw honey and yogurt are a nutrient and antioxidant powerhouse. This mixture provides many different types of vitamin, minerals and antioxidants that can promote our overall health. Raw honey is incredibly rich in high quality and potent antioxidants. These include organic acids, flavonoids and phenols. As well, honey contains bioactive plant compounds and trace amounts of vital nutrients. Yogurt is incredibly nutrient dense and rich in vital nutrients. It contains high levels of calcium, vitamin B12, phosphorus, magnesium and riboflavin, along with probiotic compounds. 2. This mixture can also promote the health of our heart many different ways. As mentioned previously, honey is loaded with antioxidant compounds that can help to lower both blood pressure and the risks associated with heart disease. Turn off the Instant Pot. Press the manual button. Set the time for 3 minutes under high pressure with pressure valve set sealing. 11. Quick release the pressure. Open the lid and give it a quick stir. 12. Instant Pot Shahi Chhole is ready. Serve it hot with Naan, Rice or Roti. You can make this in the pan too.
