Special Report: Birth Control Controversy
WEST MICHIGAN (NEWSCHANNEL 3) - Its a procedure more than 750,000 women have had over the last 12 years--and according to doctors, most with desired results. But now, more and more women are coming forward, blaming pain and mystery medical issues that had gone undiagnosed for years on Essure. In a special report, Newschannel 3 takes a look at the product, the procedure, and the problems that some local women say they suffered because of it. 25-year-old Danica Nieuwenhuis knew, beyond a doubt, when she was done having kids--she sought out a doctor to discuss having her tubes tied. "That was the first thing that came out of his mouth, was Essure," Nieuwenhuis said. "And I thought, oh, okay, well new baby at home, no downtime, sure why not?" Video from the manufacturer, Bayer, shows how the procedure works. Metal coils are placed in the fallopian tubes. The body has an immune response to a material in the coil, and over time creates scar tissue--blocking the tube, and preventing pregnancy. But Danica, and other women from West Michigan, say Essure--sold to them as a time and money saving measure--ended up causing immeasurable pain and suffering. "Cramps, all the time, my periods were so much heavier," she said. "I had lots of tingling in my arms and my legs, and my fingers would go numb," said another patient, Kirstin Howell. "I didn't want to get out of bed, a lot, just depressed, and I didn't know what was going on with me," said Jamie Heggie. The three women describe many shared symptoms that went undiagnosed for each for years. "Testing and more testing and more testing and nothing coming up, and just like, am I crazy? Am I imagining this?" Heggie said. "When everything started getting really bad, I thought that I had ovarian cancer," Danica said. "So I went to the doctors, they tested me for everything under the sun, and I was the healthiest sick person there was." Desperate for answers, the women took to the web, and found a Facebook page that seemed to offer them. "On there, they directed me to posts that they had tagged with symptoms, went into my doctors office with a note, I probably had 12 or 15 problems on there, I said this is my problem, I think it's Essure," Howell said. "He said, okay, we'll do surgery." "It just hit me like a brick wall. That's what its been this whole time," Heggie said. All three went to doctors to have Essure removed--through hystorectomies. All three now say-- their symptoms are gone. "Before then, I really didn't know that all of my problems were caused by Essure," Danica said. "Now that its out, I know every single one of them was caused by it." Doctor Jennifer Carman, of Bronson OB-GYN performs Essure, and she acknowledges that serious complications can arise. "That coil can actually perforate through the fallopian tube or uterus and can or can be expelled in the abdominal cavity sometimes, leading to an invasive surgery to remove the coil," she said. Dr. Carman adds that fewer than five percent of patients have adverse effects, though. "The risk for complications are actually pretty small with the Essure procedure," she said. "You know, we have some case reports of some bad complications, but they're pretty rare, most patients do well with Essure." And Bayer stands behind its product, saying all adverse affects are listed in the product information. "This fact has been confirmed by the Food and Drug Administration, whose review of our five year safety data for Essure found that it did not demonstrate any new safety problems or an increase incidence of problems already known," said Dr. Edio Zampaglione, who works in U.S. Medical affairs for Bayer. While they may not be "most patients," these women say their suffering should be more than enough to warrant a closer look at the product and the procedure. "Who would want to sell you a product that is going to have all of these terrible side affects?" Howell said. "It's not a good option," Danica said. "It definitely needs to be taken off of the market." Essure was approved for use by the FDA in 2002. From that time through October of last year, 943 "adverse events" were reported to the FDA related to Essure--the most common were pain and hemorrhaging. In August a woman, who was admitted to the hospital with abdominal pain after having the Essure procedure, died from toxic shock syndrome. The attending physician ruled that the cause of death was not directly related to Essure. All three women we interviewed for this story say they are considering becoming part of a medical tort claim--which would be filed against the federal government. Access to Birth Control Sparks US Political Controversy
Women's access to birth control pills has emerged as a hotly-debated topic on Capitol Hill and in the 2012 U.S. presidential campaign. The Obama administration fueled the debate by proposing that all employers -- including religious institutions such as hospitals and universities, but not churches -- be required to offer health insurance plans to their employees that include free contraception. VOA Correspondent Cindy Saine has more.

Essure Birth Control Pulled From Market After Thousands of Lawsuits
Bayer Healthcare announced that they will stop selling their controversial birth control treatment called Essure. The company says it's because it wasn’t selling well, which is likely because it was destroying the lives of women. Ring of Fire’s Mike Papantonio and Farron Cousins discuss this issue. The company says it's because it wasn't selling well, which is likely because it was destroying the lives of women all over the country. That's really why they're doing this. This is a simple story to understand, okay? This company, Bayer, has made this product. They know it's a birth control, it's totally and unnecessary birth control. There are more birth controls out there that whatever the problem is that a woman is having with a particular kind of birth control, there are other alternative out there for them. Essure was one of these lookalike kind of deals. Other people are doing something similar, we want to try this ourselves. Now what they're finding is the Essure that's embedded in the body is breaking off in the body, migrating throughout the body and causing real serious injuries to people. That's why they're pulling the product from the market. As you know, I handled the, years ago, handled case against Bayer for another birth control pill and the problem with it sometimes is, they're always looking for that cash cow. They're always looking, this was called Yaz. It was a pill called Yaz. This is not a pill. This is, it's implanted in the body, this Essure. But they're always looking to get on the very edge of the new cash cow. That's what happened here, isn't it, Farron? It absolutely is and now they're saying well, this cash cow stopped giving us milk. It has nothing to do with these 16,000 lawsuits we're facing over this product in the US alone. No, no, no, it's because it wasn't selling well. And there's a reason. It's because, as you just pointed out, it's destroying the lives of women like so many other products that we see. Essure is a permanent form of birth control. It's this implantable device and just like every other implantable, small, metallic device we see in bodies, it breaks apart. IVC filters, the same thing. IVC filters is a great example. Same kind of deal. Breaks apart, moves systemically through the body. Lodges in organ systems, including the brain, by the way. The heart. This is the same problem here with Essure. They knew. They've known the science of implant fracture for ages. They know the science on it. They know it's bad. They know there's never been a good experience with this. Due to the location of the device in the Fallopian tubes, most of the injuries that they're seeing involve, there's a lot of kidney damage, a lot of abdominal pain, because usually when it breaks off it'll embed almost immediately wherever it can get to. Sometimes it will migrate. It will go to the brain. It will go to the heart. If you're lucky enough, it's not going to go there and immediately kill you. Instead, it'll ruin a kidney. Right. It'll ruin a bowel, a bladder. Anything it can latch itself onto and Bayer knew it. Actually pierce the bowel. That's one of the bigger problems. Yeah. Let me tell you a quick story. I think this is pretty instructional about Bayer as a company, generally. I've been toe to toe with Bayer on several occasions that's the same culture. It is a culture of, we want to follow the cash cow. We're going to make as much money as we can. We're going to leave what I call quick profits, horrible risks. Quick profits for the company, horrible risks for the consumer.

New concerns over controversial ESSURE birth control device || Most of ladies complain about this HD
New concerns over controversial birth control device A claim recorded in Nov. 2016 in the Alameda County Superior Court for many ladies everywhere throughout the nation guarantees the organization that made the disinfection gadget ESSURE didn't caution ladies of genuine and life-modifying intricacies. The suit, which additionally names the present proprietors of ESSURE, Bayer, affirms the maker did not forward the greater part of protestations of damage to the FDA as required. The ladies and their lawyers say this kept basic data from patients and specialists. Reference Bayer's disavowals here, either explanation or whatever they've documented in light of the claim. ESSURE is a minor metal curl embedded into the fallopian tubes to scar and close them, avoiding pregnancy. It was affirmed by the Food and Drug Administration in 2002 after clinical trials and Bayer says a million ladies are embedded with ESSURE curls. Since its endorsement, a large number of ladies embedded with the gadget have griped of auto safe infection, torment, unpredictable dying, unintended pregnancies, unnatural birth cycle, abscesses and tumors. "Not exclusively are they confronting physical wounds", said lawyer Holly Ennis, "The specialists don't trust them. The insurance agencies won't pay for evacuation. They get rearranged around to all these diverse masters and they are edgy to have the surgery and have these gadgets evacuated." The ESSURE gadget is a growing smaller scale curl, around 4 cm long, made of stainless steel, nickel titanium and polyethylene terephthalate (PET) strands. The claim affirms that the steel rusts inside patients, the PET strands corrupt at 65 degrees and the nickel enacted hypersensitivities in ladies uninformed they were getting a gadget with nickel. "You know what annoys me? At the point when the item was at first endorsed it had a nickel contraindication (cautioning)," Ennis said. "In 2011 there was a great deal of rivalry from another gadget called Adiana. It didn't have any metal and specialists were inclining toward the Adiana. Whenever Conceptus, ESSURE's proprietors at the time, discovered this out, they connected to the FDA to have the nickel contraindication expelled." Ennis' claim is affirmed by an official statement from Conceptus in August of 2011, in which the CEO of the organization stated, "This FDA name choice will additionally fortify our upper hand and initiative in the lasting anti-conception medication market, and we are satisfied that we could secure it." As grumblings to Conceptus grew, A Facebook aggregate began by a New York lady with 150 ESSURE patients in 2011 swelled to more than 30,000. Angie Firmalino now has 18 executives working the page as a surge of pictures, stories and urgent ladies searching for data fills the course of events every month. "We are as yet observing ladies here 6 years in the wake of beginning this gathering are having disgraceful expulsions," Firmalino said. "The gadgets are being broken inside them, they're being extended, they're being sliced through."on a current trek to Sacramento for a meet and welcome with ladies who know each other just from the Facebook assemble. On a current excursion to Sacramento, the ladies who just knew each other from Facebook met. The E-Sisters, as they call themselves, have been a drive via web-based networking media. They consistently post their Freedom of Information Act solicitations to the FDA, insightful diary articles on ESSURE and distribute Facebook interviews with specialists. Weight from the gathering prompted to a FDA hearing on ESSURE in 2016 which brought about a discovery cautioning for the gadget, which is the most abnormal amount of caution before a gadget is expelled from the market. It was a little triumph for the E-Sisters who say their definitive objective is to get the gadget off the market. "We comprehend development and we're for protected and successful contraception," Firmalino said. "The main advantage to ESSURE is comfort yet when you have such a large number of ladies having results that influence them for whatever remains of their lives, I don't believe anybody's accommodation exceeds somebody's security." The ladies and their lawyers trust they have a decent argument against the now ancient Conceptus and the present proprietors of ESSURE, Bayer. Reports of damage and ailment because of ESSURE should be swung over to the FDA yet on two examinations of the Conceptus offices in 2010 and 2013, the FDA found more than 15,000 antagonistic occasion reports were never swung over to the FDA bringing about government infringement. The new rules continue the undermining of the Obamacare mandate that requires birth control be covered with no co-pay as a preventive service. This could impact many of the millions of women who now receive contraceptives at no cost under this provision. One little shot every 3 months gives you great pregnancy protection — that means that you only have to think about birth control 4 times a year. The shot uses the hormone progestin to prevent pregnancy, but it doesn't stop the spread of STDs, so use a condom along with the shot to help protect yourself. Like other medications, the birth control shot has possible side effects, but they usually go away in a few months. It also has plenty of benefits, like making your periods lighter — or even making your period stop altogether, while you’re using it. The shot is private — only you and your doctor need to know you’re using it. And it’s super effective, as long as you get your shot on time, every time. Want to get the birth control shot? Bayer To Stop Sales Of Birth Control Implant Essure In The US
According to Gizmodo, the pharmacy Bayer has announced it would stop selling its Essure birth control implant within the United States by December 31. The controversial treatment is alleged to have harmed thousands of women in the past two decades. According to reports, the implant can cause punctures in the fallopian tubes or other parts of the uterus. It can also leave the uterus and end up trapped in the pelvis or abdomen, causing pain or triggering allergies. Both types of complications typically require surgical removal. Following outcry by patients and doctors, the FDA required Bayer to place a black box warning on its product back in 2016. https://gizmodo.com/bayer-will-soon-stop-u-s-sales-of-controversial-birth-1827756000 http://www.wochit.com This video was produced by YT Wochit News using http://wochit.com

Long Term Side Effects Of Birth Control Pills | Birth Control Pills Side Effects
Long Term Side Effects Of Birth Control Pills | Birth Control Pills Side Effects Subscribe To Get New Videos Daily: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCi1zZ8_Q7yqKInXImLCLfXw Hormonal birth control has been available to American women since the early 1960s with the introduction of "the pill." Since then, birth control via hormones can also be accomplished with injections, patches, implants and rings, although pills remain the most popular method and the most studied. All hormonal methods are meant to maintain high levels of estrogen and progesterone, which prevent women from ovulating. Controversy exists over what side effects occur with long-term use of birth control pills. Sexual Side Effects: Although women usually take birth control pills to enhance their sexual experience, there is evidence that with long-term use, it may actually make it less enjoyable for many. In 2006, a study was published in the "Journal of Sexual Medicine" that concluded long-term use of birth control pills can lead to sexual dysfunction. Specifically, the researches commonly found decreased sexual desire, sexual arousal and vaginal secretions or lubrication in the 124 women on birth control pills who were studied. The women also reported reduced sexual satisfaction and an increase in sex-related pain because of the reduced lubrication. The same research team also took blood samples from the women and realized they had elevated globulin levels, which was chronically suppressing their testosterone levels. The researchers concluded that the synthetic estrogens in birth control pills may cause permanent changes in the way genes function, resulting in a long-lasting reduction in testosterone available to the body. Cancers: It is known that some cancers need sex hormones to thrive, which is why an increased risk of breast cancer has been linked to elevated estrogen levels in women. The National Cancer Institute states that some studies have shown an increased risk of breast cancer in women taking oral contraceptives, while other studies have shown no change in risk. Generally, women older than 45 years of age who have been taking birth control pills for most of their adult lives have the highest risk of breast cancer for two reasons: long-term consecutive use of the oral contraceptive and use of earlier versions that had higher levels of sex hormones. The National Cancer Institute also notes that oral contraceptive use has been shown to increase the risk of cervical cancer and liver cancer. On the other hand, multiple studies indicate a potential decrease in risk of ovarian and endometrial cancers for women on oral contraceptives. Other Long-Term Side Effects: Other long-term side effects from oral contraceptive use include an increased risk of blood clots, heart attack, stroke, weight gain, hypertension and migraine headaches. These effects seem to be increased by cigarette smoking. Long-term use of synthetic hormones has also been linked to nutritional deficiencies, such as low levels of vitamins B2, B6 and B12, depression and increased feelings of anxiety, according to "Hormone Replacement Therapy and The Brain." https://www.livestrong.com/article/17404-stop-nausea-caused-birth-control/ Music Source: www.bensound.com Health Disclaimer: The information on this channel is only for educational purposes. The TRUTH About the DANGERS of Birth Control | Weight Gain, Depression & Appetite Changes
In this episode of Abbey’s Kitchen, Abbey is joined by our fav dieter, Debbie! Today Debbie is concerned that birth control is poisoning us and contributes to a ton of toxins in our body. Debbie claims the pill causes blood clots, stroke, depression, loss of libido and even weight gain. Abbey admits that contraceptives can be a very controversial and complex topic, and in the past the pill used to contain scary high doses of estrogen, but over time, scientists have developed much safer birth control pills that have been developed with fewer side effects. Debbie is still not convinced and blames everything on toxic hormones like estrogen and progesterone. In actuality, Abbey shares with Debbie a 2014 Cochrane review found that the combination of estrogen and progesterone found no significant difference in weight gain, but the largest difference in weight gain was about 4 pounds after 12 months. Debbie still sees this as significant and wants to KILL THE PILL. Abbey also found that those who gained the weight were in the less estrogen group, which counters the theory that estrogen causes the weight gain. So, then we assume progesterone is the culprit? However, another review found that the progesterone-only pill did not cause a significant gain weight. However, the only method of progesterone birth control that did cause weight gain was: depot-medroxyprogesterone acetate which found girls were gaining an average of 10 pounds in one year. Debbie still believes that all birth control is bad, and mentioned that her friend’s appetite increased and they bloated up. Abbey looked at the research and found that the majority of studies on appetite were solely perception based. Granted, high doses of estrogen tend to cause water retention, but most pills have pretty low doses. Recent studies have concluded that birth control doesn’t cause significant bloating. Debbie also claimed that birth control causes depression. Abbey checked out the same Danish study and it found that when they observed one million women taking birth control for 6 years, there was a significant correlation between birth control and clinical depression. This is not a new theory, but sadly women’s health is not always at the forefront in the medical community and sadly there’s a lot of politics that come into play. Debbie is no feminist but she’s sure that if men had to take the pill, there wouldn’t be all these side effects. Finally, Abbey and Debbie agree on something. Abbey has found some research with the male pill, but because of the ton of side effects, a lot of that research has been put on hold. It’s a man’s world. Abbey and Debbie both agree that there’s a lot more that needs to be done, but at least studies like the Danish one are starting to lift the veil and giving women a voice and more control over their choices. At the end of the day, it’s a risk and benefit analysis and it’s up to you to decide for yourself whether you can tolerate the side effects and whether it outweigh the risk of having an unwanted pregnancy. As always, Abbey recommends speaking with your doctor about your concerns and continue to read up on new studies because there’s a lot more we need to know to understand all the ways hormones impact our health. For more tips on staying healthy, recipes, dieting, and information fit for consumption by foodies everywhere stop by Abbey’s blog. http://abbeyskitchen.com

Women Working: What’s the Pill Got to Do With It?
At the turn of the century, it was rare for a woman to get a college degree or join, and stay in, the workforce. One trailblazer was Katherine McCormick. She was the second woman ever to graduate from MIT, a suffragist, advocate for women’s education, and later philanthropist. McCormick was also a staunch supporter of birth control, going so far as to smuggle contraceptives into the United States at a time when they were illegal or highly regulated. In the 1950s, the birth control pill was extremely controversial. Funding for its development had been pulled. McCormick stepped in and, over time, contributed nearly $23 million (in today’s dollars) of her own money to research efforts. Her financial involvement was instrumental in achieving FDA approval and widespread acceptance of “the pill.” But what does the the pill have to do with female education or women working? For the very first time, women were in control over if and when they would have children. Since the mid-1960s, shortly after the pill was approved as a contraceptive in the United States, female education and labor force participation rates have skyrocketed. With the ability to control when they will have children, women are able to better plan for their academic and professional future. We may take it for granted today, but half a century ago, the pill changed the game for working women. An App Is Now Being Used As A Birth Control Method
A birth-control app called Natural Cycles has been approved by the US Food and Drug Administration. It's the first time an app has been approved for contraception in North America. The app doesn't involve a pill and contains no medication. It tells users when to use protection based on a woman's daily temperature and period. "Consumers are increasingly using digital health technologies to inform their everyday health decisions, and this new app can provide an effective method of contraception if it's used carefully and correctly. But women should know that no form of contraception works perfectly, so an unplanned pregnancy could still result from correct usage of this device." Terri Cornelison, assistant director for women's health at the FDA's Center for Devices 37 women reported getting pregnant while using the app in Sweden. https://www.businessinsider.com/birth-control-app-fda-approval-controversy-2018-8 http://www.wochit.com This video was produced by YT Wochit News using http://wochit.com
