Strengthening strategic delta planning processes

01:34
Project summary: Strategic delta planning is a relatively novel approach that is increasingly used to support long-term integrated and adaptive management of urbanizing deltas, for instance in the Netherlands, Vietnam and Bangladesh. Although strategic delta planning is generally initiated as a concerted effort during a limited period of years, it does not take place in a vacuum. Delta planning needs to fit within a longer history of past planning efforts, societal structures and existing policy environments if it wants to secure a successful implementation throughout its longer-term planning horizon. This project aims at a better understanding of the nature and specifics of strategic delta planning processes, by studying three crucial elements that together influence the fit of delta planning within society: the formation and change over time of various stakeholder coalitions; the role of technological advances and innovative solutions in longer-term delta management processes; and the availability of tools and approaches that support participatory processes. Strong links with practice are forged to ensure the empirical grounding of research, uptake of results and contributions to policy practice. Therefore, the project is linked to real-world strategic delta planning processes in the Netherlands, Bangladesh and Vietnam. These linkages are secured through the involvement in these processes of the various members of the project consortium. And as delta planning requires the combination of delta-level coordination with national level planning and local level actions, the project looks also at specific areas. These are characterised by the prevalence of polders, which demand new innovations in management and/or technology because of the ongoing pressures from urbanisation, growth and climate change. Capacity building is embedded in the involvement of various stakeholders throughout the project activities, as well as through the international networks and educational platforms offered by the project partners. The Urbanising Deltas of the World research programme Urbanising Deltas of the World (UDW) is a research and innovation programme that aims to contribute to global water safety, water and food security and pro-poor sustainable economic and urban development in river delta’s worldwide, by providing effective and efficient responses to increasing pressure and rapid changes related to climate change, population growth and increasing economic activities. The programme funds integrated inter- and transdisciplinary research projects. The programme started in 2012 as a cooperation between several divisions of the Netherlands Organisation for Scientific Research (NWO) and the Directorate General of International Development (DGIS) of the Netherlands Ministry of Foreign Affairs. It is governed by a Steering Committee (SC) composed of representatives of the funding agencies, and managed by a small secretariat based at the NWO division WOTRO Science for Global Development. www.nwo.nl/udw

Tagaytay, Cavite Province - 60 kilometres (37 miles) south of Manila 1. Wide of news conference 2. Mid shot Vietnamese, Japanese and Chinese delegates at table 3. Journalists and cameramen 4. Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar delegates 5. Wide of delegates at table 6. SOUNDBITE (English) Segfredo Serrano, Under-Secretary of Department of Agriculture, Philippines: "The ministers agreed the HPAI (highly pathogenic avian influenza) outbreak requires an all out coordinated regional effort and the ministers also agreed that the HPAI task force will work closely with international organisations such the FAO (UN Food and Agriculture Organisation), the OIE (World Organisation for Animal Health) and the WHO (World Health Organisation). The ministers expressed confidence that with financial and political commitment this disease can be effectively controlled in the region." 7. Wide of Serrano 8. Close up Japanese minister 9. Wide of delegates from China, Japan and Republic of South Korea STORYLINE: Southeast Asia's agriculture ministers endorsed a UN plan on Friday to combat bird flu - a move they hope will win enough international aid to halt the disease before it becomes a catastrophic epidemic with the potential to kill millions of people globally. The ministers from the 10-member Association of Southeast Asian Nations said in a statement that "the highly pathogenic avian influenza," which has ravaged poultry populations in large swaths of Asia and killed dozens of people, requires "an all-out coordinated regional effort." The meeting in the Philippines resort town of Tagaytay ended with the endorsement of a regional plan for control and eradication of bird flu and directed a new task force to urgently formulate "a detailed action plan for implementation and proceed to identify potential sources of funding," a joint ASEAN statement said. The three-year plan was drafted by the UN Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) and the World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE) in May, and will be presented to international donors in December for implementation early next year. The two-day meeting comes hot on the heels of an urgent warning from a UN health official about the disease's potential threat to human life. Dr. David Nabarro of the World Health Organisation (WHO) said on Thursday that political leaders must take immediate steps to prevent a human flu pandemic, which could strike if the bird virus mutates into a strain that is both deadly to humans and easily spread among people. IRRI: Rice genetic diversity and discovery

03:21
Hei Leung, senior scientist at the International Rice Research Institute (IRRI; http://irri.org ), explains the Institute's program on Rice Genetic Diversity and Discovery: meeting the needs of future generations for rice genetic resources. This program provides the foundation for applying rice genetic diversity in the implementation of IRRI's Strategic Plan ( http://irri.org/bringinghope/improvinglives.pdf ). It focuses on three themes: characterization and creation of genetic diversity, and gene-function assignment; conservation and documentation of germplasm (seeds and the genetic material they contain); and enabling access to and use of genetic diversity and associated tools. These activities aim to solve production problems by using genetic diversity and by providing a genetic research platform that enables efficient conservation and use of genetic diversity. Thus, the program, which represents the interface between understanding and applying genetic diversity, promotes a convergence of approaches and innovations. Although the program's activities are driven by the problems IRRI seeks to solve, the research also accommodates exploratory work to serve long-term needs. In developing a public genetic research platform, a key achievement of the program has been the production of more than 150,000 high-quality single-nucleotide polymorphisms (known as SNPs, these are small variations, such as single-base mutations, in gene sequences) across 20 rice genotypes through the OryzaSNP project, a collaborative effort coordinated by the International Rice Functional Genomics Consortium (IRFGC; http://irfgc.irri.org ). To analyze grain-quality and stress-tolerance traits, we are determining the relationship between genetic diversity and phenotype—the actual form the plant takes in the field. We have also improved the efficiency with which indica rice can be transformed (in transformation, a gene or genes from another variety or species are inserted into the genome of the target variety), which will facilitate the testing of gene functions in different rice varieties.

iDigBio: Using Digital Specimen Data in Biodiversity Conservation Planning and Implementation

01:09:39
Gil Nelson, iDigBio, Florida State University Molly Phillips, iDigBio, University of Florida The first two decades of the 21st Century have seen an exponential increase in the generation and mobilization of digital, specimen-based biodiversity data and turned natural history museums and biodiversity collections in academic institutions into major resources of conservation data. Led in the U.S. largely by the National Science Foundation’s Advancing Digitization of Biodiversity Collections (ADBC) initiative, more than 700 U.S. institutions in 50 states and two territories are digitizing their biodiversity collections and serving these data through iDigBio (Integrated Digitized Biocollections), the national coordinating center for digitization and data mobilization in the U.S. The iDigBio portal (https://www.idigbio.org/portal) now serves more than 110 million records representing 300-400 million specimens, and just over 24 million media records, the majority of which are 2D images. These resources expose previously difficult-to-access collections to wider audiences of conservation practitioners and provide access to the best biodiversity data in the modern era outside of nature itself. This webinar will focus on the brief history of data mobilization in the U.S., the data that are now available and accessible to conservation planners, and how these data can be employed in the implementation of conservation strategies. An overview of the iDigBio data portal will be included.

From Deep Learning of Disentangled Representations to Higher-level Cognition

01:17:05
One of the main challenges for AI remains unsupervised learning, at which humans are much better than machines, and which we link to another challenge: bringing deep learning to higher-level cognition. We review earlier work on the notion of learning disentangled representations and deep generative models and propose research directions towards learning of high-level abstractions. This follows the ambitious objective of disentangling the underlying causal factors explaining the observed data. We argue that in order to efficiently capture these, a learning agent can acquire information by acting in the world, moving our research from traditional deep generative models of given datasets to that of autonomous learning or unsupervised reinforcement learning. We propose two priors which could be used by an agent acting in its environment in order to help discover such high-level disentangled representations of abstract concepts. The first one is based on the discovery of independently controllable factors, i.e., in jointly learning policies and representations, such that each of these policies can independently control one aspect of the world (a factor of interest) computed by the representation while keeping the other uncontrolled aspects mostly untouched. This idea naturally brings fore the notions of objects (which are controllable), agents (which control objects) and self. The second prior is called the consciousness prior and is based on the hypothesis that our conscious thoughts are low-dimensional objects with a strong predictive or explanatory power (or are very useful for planning). A conscious thought thus selects a few abstract factors (using the attention mechanism which brings these variables to consciousness) and combines them to make a useful statement or prediction. In addition, the concepts brought to consciousness often correspond to words or short phrases and the thought itself can be transformed (in a lossy way) into a brief linguistic expression, like a sentence. Natural language could thus be used as an additional hint about the abstract representations and disentangled factors which humans have discovered to explain their world. Some conscious thoughts also correspond to the kind of small nugget of knowledge (like a fact or a rule) which have been the main building blocks of classical symbolic AI. This, therefore, raises the interesting possibility of addressing some of the objectives of classical symbolic AI focused on higher-level cognition using the deep learning machinery augmented by the architectural elements necessary to implement conscious thinking about disentangled causal factors. What is a Local Area Coordinator?

01:35
Hi, Stu here from NDIA. You may have heard about local area coordination. Well today, we’re in chilly North East Melbourne. We’ll be talking with our community partner, the Brotherhood of St. Laurence, about local area coordination and why it’s so important. So come with me and let’s find out what it’s all about. I’m one of the local area coordinators and I’m based in the Greensborough site. One of the main functions is to provide a link to NDIS and the NDIA. The good thing about where we are, we’re location based. So we’re providing a real local experience for our participants. We really are an information point. You will feel as nervous as anything, but don’t worry about it. Don’t underestimate the pre-planning side of things. It helps so much, you would not believe. Focus on any goals, even if they’re five or ten years ahead, because they’re the ones that will get you to where you need to go in the long term. That’s what NDIS are looking for and will help you with. The role of an LAC is to help participants navigate through the NDIS. It’s all about helping participants develop a plan that will help them. It’s an amazing opportunity that we get to meet with participants and learn what an ordinary life looks like for them. And help them achieve it. So we’ve learnt a lot today about local area coordination. If you’d like to know more about local area coordination or just about the NDIS, head to our website. It’s www.ndis.gov.au

Coordinating a mobile team always on the go [Conservation Volunteers Case Study]

03:04
Conservation Volunteers recruits volunteers from Australia, New Zealand and around the world to join important environmental and wildlife conservation projects. CVA were looking for ways to better induct people, collate and distribute information, in a very efficient way that was scalable and repeatable. Of course, being a conservation organisation, they were also concerned with their paper usage and their business effects on the environment. More than anything, they wanted to be ‘mobile’ and to be able to conduct their activities on the go. They deployed a Mobility solution with Telstra, using apps like ARISapp and CANVAS.

Chicago Industrial Manufacturing Video Production

Video produced for an industrial manufacturing company based in the Chicago suburb of Addison, Illinois. To read more about this amazing mission and our video production, please visit the blog post: http://www.delackmediagroup.com/corporateblog/chicago-industrial-manufacturing-video-production/964/ South Georgia is part of a series of islands in the Southern Atlantic Ocean (near the South Pole). It’s home to many birds, seals, penguins, and other amazing creatures. The only people who live on South Georgia Island are scientists and government officials. The South Georgia Heritage Trust is a nonprofit organization based in Scotland. Their main mission is to preserve South Georgia’s natural and historical heritage. Throughout the 19th & 20th centuries, sealers & whalers used the island as a home base. Although whalers departed the island when whaling operations ceased in the 1960s, they left behind a devastating legacy that to this day scientists are still trying to reverse. When sealers and whalers docked their boats on the island, the Norway (brown) rat was introduced to this bird sanctuary. It was estimated at one point that hundreds of thousands or even millions of rats inhabited the island. Many of the birds who used the island to nest have fallen prey to the rats. Consequently, the bird population has declined at a dangerous rate. The South Georgia Heritage Trust worked with scientists on a multi-million dollar project to blanket the entire island with rat bait. The Trust contacted Bell Laboratories in Wisconsin to help develop a plan for eradication of the invasive species. One of the project’s many challenges included how to physically get the bait from Wisconsin to the South Pole; a journey of around 10,000 miles across land, sea, and rugged terrain in some of the most challenging weather conditions. Enter OX BOX, a heavy duty industrial packaging company based in the Chicago suburb of Addison, Illinois. The company was just in the midst of developing a weatherproof container that could also be compostable. Timing couldn’t have been more perfect. OX BOX was contacted by a trade magazine who wanted to do a feature on the project. As part of their magazine feature, they also wanted to include a digital video component on their website that would compliment the article. We were hired to produce the video. We coordinated with folks at the South Georgia Heritage Trust to interview their lead scientist, Anthony (Tony) Martin. This interview was filmed for us in Scotland by an amazing local crew. The footage was shipped to our suburban Chicago studio; along with footage that was filmed while a documentary crew was following the team during their mission. We also coordinated local production at the OX BOX facility; where we filmed an interview with the company’s President and various b-roll of their operations. We produced the piece, combined it with music, lower third motion graphics, and a final graphic animation of their company’s logo.

The Role of Regional Governments in Climate Change Policy

09:04
There is no effective implementation of climate policies without a coordination of international agreements with local and regional governments. Ibon Galarraga, Professor at Basque Centre for Climate Change (BC3), spoke at COP21in Paris and highlighted how relevant is to understand that addressing climate change need e collaboration a different levels of governance. Regional governments have got great potential in adaptation and mitigation strategies. They have great proximity with citizens, great flexibility to design and implement policies, they are in charge of many of the important areas for climate policy: transport, industry, housing, environment, energy. “From taxes to emission trading, from energy standards to public/private partnerships, from certifications to regulations, and capacity building – Dr. Galarraga said – there are many things that Regions can do, and that they are actually doing to face climate change”. ============ This video is part of the COP21 Side Event “Regions and Climate Change: a major challenge for local communities” – COP Conference Center, Observer Room 12, Paris - December 10, 2015 – was organized by the Euro-Mediterranean Center on Climate Change – CMCC (Lead applicant) in collaboration with the Basque Centre for Climate Change – BC3 (co-applicant) and theItalian Society for Climate Sciences – SISC (co-applicant). Feral cats in Australia: Part 6 - Why few cat control programs exist

03:07
Chris Dickman is a Professor in Terrestrial Ecology at the School of Biological Sciences, Sydney University. He has studied interactions between native and introduced species in the arid regions of Australia for many years. In this video, Chris discusses the difficulties in implementing effective feral cat control problems. Feral cats live, hunt and reproduce in the wild. They have the body shape, acute senses and fine coordination perfectly suited for stalking and capturing prey. These traits have allowed feral cats to adapt to some of Australia's harshest conditions and invade almost all parts of the continent. Cats probably arrived in Australia as pets of European settlers and were later deliberately introduced in an attempt to control rabbits and rodents. Cats now occupy 99% of Australia, including many offshore islands. Feral cats need large amounts of fresh meat to survive and reproduce. In Australia they mainly eat small native and exotic mammals, birds, lizards and insects. About 80 endangered and threatened species are at risk from feral cat predation in Australia. feral cats also carry diseases which can affect humans and other animals. What if... you could save a life? | Diane Brockmeier | TEDxGatewayArch

14:24
As a long time advocate of organ transplant Diane had the opportunity to make advances in the field...and she did. Why would an organ transplant organization split off and get into the DMV business? How can you save a life? For more than 40 years, Mid-America Transplant has facilitated and coordinated organ and tissue donation, and now serves 84 counties covering eastern Missouri, southern Illinois and northeast Arkansas. It is federally designated as one of 58 such organizations in the U.S. Mid-America Transplant is a not-for-profit organization. As President and CEO of Mid-America Transplant, Diane Brockmeier oversees strategic operations, including key partnerships with more than 120 hospitals in the counties served by the organization. She has been with Mid-America Transplant for 30 years, first as a nurse and organ procurement coordinator and then rising through the ranks to oversee all organ procurement and clinical services as the chief operating officer before becoming president and CEO in February 2016. Strategically, Brockmeier was the driving force in implementing several innovative best practices over the past several years. Her key accomplishments include overseeing the design, construction and use of a first-in-the-nation, on-site surgical suite for organ and tissue recovery. Brockmeier enhanced the initial vision to include on-site catheterization and CT scanning, which led to praise by donor hospitals and transplant surgeons for its enhanced quality control and convenience. Brockmeier was instrumental in quality and organizational changes that resulted in Mid-America Transplant being awarded the Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award in 2016. This prestigious award recognizes the organization for its ability to support the community by saving lives through increased organ and tissue donations, and marks the first time an organ procurement organization has been named a Baldrige recipient. Brockmeier’s ability to anticipate and understand industry trends also has led to her active role in the national Association of Organ Procurement Organizations, where she has chaired and served on numerous committees related to standards and accreditations, strategic planning and procurement. In addition, she is a member of the Board of Examiners for the Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award and is a committee member of the United Network of Organ Sharing (UNOS). Webinar: Springs in the Sky Island Region Inventory, Assessment, and Management Planning Project

49:48
Title: BLM's Rapid Ecoregional Assessments (REA) Presenter: Louise Misztal, Adapt Program Manager and GIS Specialist at Sky Island Alliance. Date: October 2nd, 2014 at 11 am CST Abstract: Springs are keystone ecosystems in the Sky Island Region, exert disproportionate influence on surrounding landscapes, and are known to be biodiversity hotspots. Although they are abundant in this arid region, they are poorly documented and little studied. They also suffer from extensive human modification and are among the most threatened ecosystems. Lack of information on their location, management context, and biological, hydrological, and ecological characteristics hinders effective stewardship of these resources. We developed new information regarding the biological and management status of springs in the Sky Island Region of southeastern Arizona located at the heart of the Desert Landscape Conservation Cooperative (DLCC) region. We employed a combination of expert and citizen science inventories and assessments to collect critical baseline information on known springs in areas of interest and priority for managers in the region. This volunteer-driven inventory program is a model for monitoring climate sensitive resources with limited resources. New information on the spatial location, temporal attributes, and the biological, hydrological and geomorphological status of springs was applied to management through formal adaptation planning. Data collected through this project and previously existing data from the various cooperating agencies is now available online regionally and internationally through the Springs Inventory Database (springsdata.org). This database provides a much-needed landscape level context for making management decisions. Other project components included extensive coordination with resource managers, an interactive map of springs that have been surveyed and survey information (http://tinyurl.com/k9bf8et) and site specific management planning for springs. About the Presenter: Louise Misztal is the Adapt Program Manager and GIS Specialist at Sky Island Alliance. Louise works with land management agencies (federal, tribal, state and local), academic institutions, conservation organizations, and private landowners to ensure conservation-based adaptive land management. She is the principle architect of a regional climate change adaptation workshop series available to resource managers to advance understanding of climate change impacts on Sky Island ecosystems and to develop on-the-ground adaptation actions that can be implemented. Over the past eleven years Louise has worked on a variety of research, monitoring, and conservation projects focused on protecting sensitive species, developing spatial conservation priorities, reducing ecological impacts of roads, implementing climate change adaptation strategies, and inventorying and conserving sensitive water resources.

2016 Lecture 03 Maps of Meaning: Part I: The basic story and its transformations

01:30:28
Twitter: https://twitter.com/jordanbpeterson Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/drjordanpeterson/ We inhabit a story, with a particular structure. That story contains a representation of the desired future, compared to the interpreted present. It exists at different levels of resolution, from low-res abstract ideals, down to the conscious microbehaviors that make up our actual interaction with the world. A story tells about a journey from point a to point b. A revolutionary story, a meta-story, describes how one story was transformed by anomaly and crisis into another.

Saksham Initiative

00:58
Plan India has launched many initiatives which help in enhancing young people's access to market driven vocational skills. Through these initiatives, Plan India aims to achieve decent employment for youth living in poor urban and rural areas and ensure that all new entrants to the workforce, including young girls, are equipped with the knowledge and skills needed for high productivity and high-quality jobs. Saksham project is one such initiative, where youth from disadvantaged and marginalized rural and urban communities are being offered market demand driven 'Job Oriented Vocational Training'. The project is targeted at underprivileged girls and boys in the age group of 18 to 25 years in various resettlement colonies of Delhi. The target locations for project are located at the peripheries of Delhi. The training courses include Customer Relations and Sales (CRS); Retail; Hospitality; Debt Recovery Agent (DRA); and IT-Enabled Services. The course delivery is made more comprehensive with the inclusion of English speaking, basic computer education, personality development, and life skills. The project has been implemented through a tri-partite partnership model between Plan India, civil society organisations, and training agency working on youth employment. Plan India is responsible for the overall management, coordination, monitoring, and implementation of the project. Saksham key intervention strategies Saksham focuses on 'Promotion of market demand driven Job oriented Vocational training'. The key intervention strategies include •Identify potential trades for vocational training through a thorough market study •Identify potential employer (of identified vocational trades) closer to each targeted area of operation •Develop customised (as per the requirement of potential employers) vocational and life skill courses •Create awareness amongst youth about the job opportunities in the market and provide career counselling •Work with families, communities, and employers to sensitize them about gender equity, equal opportunity, and economic empowerment of young girls •Mobilize/identify suitable youth for the appropriate vocational course from marginalized families of the targeted operational areas •Provide vocational and life skills training to identified youth •Provide job placements to the trained youth •Provide post job placement follow up support to youth •Creation of young people's collectives (in the form of youth alumni) to help each other to combat unemployment and underemployment issues at the grassroots level Today the project has established credibility in the community. It has simultaneously contributed in generating awareness among the stakeholders and in community about the importance of the economic empowerment of girls. As result, now more girls are enrolling in Saksham. There is also an increased demand from the employers for Saksham candidates.

The 19th party congress next Wednesday is likely to see a more detailed plan for the development of a collective of 11 cities surrounding the Pearl River Delta, known as the “Greater Bay Area”, followed by the appointment of a powerful commander in charge. Such a proposal came amid concerns that protectionism by individual cities of similar economic functions could hinder Beijing’s efforts to build an economic zone that matches its New York and San Francisco counterparts. “If you want to have efficient coordination between cities and to implement some special policies, a higher level committee needs to be set up, with supervision of a higher ranking official, preferably vicepremier or above,” Regina Ip Lau Sukyee, an executive councillor to the leader of Hong Kong, said on Monday. Ip said she would submit the proposal to Beijing through the financial secretary on Tuesday. Ip’s suggestion is echoed by scholars in Hong Kong and mainland China, as well as business leaders, who think that a powerful central leadership is essential to coordinate works involving two special administrative regions with a different political system and nine mainland Chinese cities. “Integrating the Greater Bay Area has been a sensitive plan, because it is also seen as a political mission,” Ding Li, professor at the semiofficial Guangdong Academy of Social Sciences, said. The formula of “one country, two systems” implemented in Hong Kong and Macau only promises 50 years of unchanged economic and political systems, which expires in 2047. “To implement a complicated plan of such, getting an official ranked vicepremier or above on board is definitely a meaningful approach,” the economics professor said. “But the problem is how important the Greater Bay Area development plan is to the central government. We will have a clearer picture after the 19th party congress,” he added. The answer is “very important” for Professor Lau Siukai, vicechairman at Chinese Association of Hong Kong and Macau Studies. The regional development was mentioned in the address during President Xi Jinping’s visit to Hong Kong in June and the government work report delivered by Premier Li Keqiang in March, Lau s... ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Omur Arslan presents "Clustering-Based Robot Navigation and Control"

55:21
2/17/2016 Abstract: With the increasing use of robots in our daily lives, it becomes even more crucial for autonomous robotics systems to be able to safely move in their workspaces to accomplish given tasks. Two widely used approaches to tackle the safe robot navigation problem are configuration space and sampling-based motion planning methods. While configuration space motion planning requires an explicit representation of the robot's configuration space (all possible allowed robot states that are free of any collisions, and satisfy the kinematic and dynamic system constraints) in terms of standard geometric and topological shapes, sampling-based motion planning avoids this complexity by producing open-loop navigation trajectories using randomly sampled robot configurations and simple connectivity criteria. In this talk, I will introduce the use of clustering for closing the gap in modeling configuration spaces between these two complementary motion planning methods. Traditionally an unsupervised learning method, clustering offers automated tools to discover coherent groups (clusters) in configuration spaces to model their unknown global organizational structure and/or to determine collision free neighborhoods of robot configurations. I will demonstrate potential applications of such clustering tools to the problem of feedback motion planning and control. In particular, I will present the use of hierarchical clustering for provably correct coordinated multirobot motion design, and I will show how the robot-centric Voronoi diagrams can be used for provably correct safe robot navigation in cluttered environments. Biography: Omur Arslan received the B.Sc. and M.Sc. degrees in electrical and electronics engineering from the Middle East Technical University, Ankara, Turkey, in 2007 and from Bilkent University, Ankara, in 2009, respectively. He is currently working toward the Ph.D. degree with the Department of Electrical and Systems Engineering, University of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia. His current research interests include geometric and topological characterization of clustering methods and its application to robot motion planning and control, machine perception, machine learning and data mining.

The NDIS and community partners. Hi, Stu here from the NDIA. You’ll be seeing signs like this pop up around the country and maybe even in your community. The NDIS is building a network of community partners around the country to deliver the NDIS in your community. Today you’ll be hearing from one of our community partners in sunny Townsville, who is working on delivering early childhood intervention, and also from chilly Greensborough in North East Melbourne where we will be talking with the Brotherhood of St. Laurence, who are working with us on local area coordination services. What is an Early Childhood Partner? I’m Petrina, I work for Uniting Care Community. We’re the early childhood partner for the NDIS in Townsville and Charters Towers. I work alongside families to help them connect to the NDIS and help them connect to mainstream services in the community. My name’s Rachael, I have seven children, but my youngest two daughters both have spina bifida. Prior to NDIS, I guess our life very much felt like we were just living in the day to day and the message being, just enjoy what you’ve got. Enjoy them while you’ve got them. Uniting Care Community were the ones that provided my planner, and that was really great. It’s wonderful to be able to actually be excited about their future. Now it’s about “awesome, what can we do to support you to make that happen?” What we do is we get beside the families and we help build their skills and the skills of the child, to help them have the best opportunities later in life and realise all their ambitions and dreams. What is a Local Area Coordinator? I’m one of the local area coordinators and I’m based in the Greensborough site. The good thing about where we are, we’re location based. So we’re providing a real local experience for our participants. So we really are an information point. You will feel as nervous as anything, but don’t worry about it. Don’t underestimate the pre-planning side of things. Focus on any goals, even if they’re five or ten years ahead, because they’re the ones that will get you to where you need to go in the long term. That’s what NDIS are looking for and will help you with. So we’ve learnt a lot today about how our partners in the community are working together with us to deliver the NDIS in your community.
