UPDATE: Please like, comment and subscribe. Also, see my other video for "Five Tips for Fastest Pinewood Derby - THE ORIGINAL." Under my theme of "Five tips for fastest pinewood," I present some common CHEATS. Here I list SIX CHEATS that in some cases may be allowed, but in other packs, they would be considered cheating. Extended Wheel base is the easiest to spot. Riding on 3 wheels is also very easy. But lightweight wheels is one that is hard to detect, and can take a as much as a full 10th off your time. I tested the same car at 3.130 with regular wheels and 3.030 with lightweight wheels shown in video. (Machine lathed from the inside.)

Begins with Cub Scout Pack 296, Den 3 go-kart build and ends with a test run of a new soap box derby car for the annual Soap Box Derby in Rio Vista, California. Thank you for sponsoring the Cub Pack - Laurel Ace Hardware, Economy Lumber, and Bay Bolts in Oakland, California. We couldn't of done this without you. Seats were acquired from a public school in Oakland and removed from broken desks on their way to the dump. A simple drill and screw driver to pry the seats off is all that is required. Takes under 2 minutes per seat. I am a teacher and seems I easily have access to 10 seats per month. Cost of go-karts = $40. From Ace Hardware: Wheel - Sku #7161003 (qty: 4) 5' Nylon Rope From Bay Bolts: Axle - 5/8"x6" Lag Bolt (qty: 4) 5/8" Washer (qty: 8) Steering column -1/2"x4" Carriage Bolt (qty: 1) 1/2" Washer (qty: 2) 1/2" Split Washer (qty: 1) 1/2" (prefer Nyloc) Nut Seat screws: 1-1.5" Panhead Screws (qty: 9) Frame screws: 2.5-3" Wood Screws (qty: 16) From Economy Lumber: 10' 2x4 Construction Grade (qty:1) Dollar Tree: Toilet plunger for the brake (qty: 1) * Recommendation would be for a Saturday build as you will need time. Provide kids pre-cut and pre-drilled wood in advance to paint. Include the wheels, lag bolts, and washers. When everyone meets wood needs to be painted and wheels need to be on axles. ** It is best to use a air compressor/pneumatic driver to install the axle lag bolts as they are challenging. If a person has this equipment, it is very helpful to do this in advance. If this is done, expect a much shorter build time. The same build with another group of friends: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tK-rzL-6cgw The original build: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MNooLgKjwvM

This chair was built out of two pallets. The plans called for 3/4" thick legs. I was worried about the strength of the pallet wood so I doubled it up and went with 1 1/2". I also went with 3/4" thick seat slats as apposed to the 3/8" that the plans called for. The chair seems to be nice and strong so far and I'm really pleased with how it came out. Be sure to check out the playlist for the challenge and check out everyones videos! Thanks for watching and if you're interested in building some of these, here's a link to the plans I used. How to win a Pine Wood Derby... these aren't "cheats" or "hacks," but mostly allowable ways to reduce friction and weight distribution to create a faster car. Check your own Cub Scout or Boy Scout pack rules because they vary. Thanks to my cousin Jim who provided this advice, and his children have won packs and gone to state finals. The basic idea is less about weight (which is usually capped at 5 ounces so nobody creates a super heavy car that gravity favors). It's also less about aerodynamics, although that plays some part. The secret key to winning a Pine Wood Derby is to REDUCE FRICTION. The lower the friction, the faster the car. If a wheel is rubbing against wood or a nail is bumpy, the car will slow down. A well-lubricated, smooth wheel and axle will win every time. 1. Axles (nails): File down the nail (especially the protrusions near the head), then sand them nice and smooth. This is the most important point of friction. 2. Axle Head: File the inside of the head at an angle away from the center, b/c then less of the head will rub against the plastic wheel, thereby reducing friction. I put the nail into a drill to make it faster and more even. 3. Wheel Bottoms: if your rules permit, sand the wheel so the flat tread becomes rounded in a way that very little of the tread touches the road surface, which reduces friction. You want the least amount of wheel touching the track, but most rules forbid making razor sharp wheels. 4. Wheel Friction: watch that inside wheel nub that rubs against the car: file this at an angle so less of it will rub against the car, thereby reducing friction. Some rules forbid this. 5. Weight: this is so important that there's the 5-ounce rule. A lighter car is not an advantage. Make sure your car weighs exactly that maximum weight to get some help from gravity. Be sure to bring attachable magnets or lead so you can remove it if your home scale (or post office scale) is different. It's frustrating to have a car you thought weighed exactly 5 ounces, and suddenly you're panicking to reduce it. 6. Weight Distribution: If possible, design a car that's fatter in the back, and put extra weight over the back wheels. The more weight at the rear, the faster the car goes. Add weights by drilling holes and sticking in fishing weights, or superglue weights, coins, lead, etc. on the top of the back of the car. 7. Wheel Trick: Try to position one of the front axles so the car is only riding on the two back wheels and one front wheel. Why? 3 wheels on the surface instead of 4 = ¼ less friction. 8. Axle Positions: The front of car should be where the axle slot is farther away from the end of the block of wood, because you want to keep those back wheels as close to the back of the car as possible. 9. Axel Tightening: When your car is done, squirt a little superglue between the axle and the slot in which it is wedged. This keeps the axle from falling out after some racing (and it happens). But, be very careful not to let the superglue get near the outside of the axle or touch the wheel in any way. That will slow down the spinning of your wheels. 10. Shape is less important than some think, but every little bit helps in a close race. The skinnier and flatter the car, the faster. 11. Lubrication. Most rules forbid liquid lubricants. But graphite is important, and neurotic parents bring loads of it for last-minute touch ups. Concentrate powder graphite in the wheel tube where the axle goes. Rub graphite on the side of the car and anywhere else where parts are rubbing against each other - makes the parts slicker, reducing friction. Do this repeatedly, including right before you leave for your arrive. Smear your graphitey fingers on the kid you like the least. 12. Creativity. There's usually a "ringer" in every pack (the dad is OCD and keeps his child far away as possible from screwing up the car). So it's sometimes better to focus on making a unique and interesting car. Almost all of the derby racing cars will look like racing cars (yawn), but occasionally you see something memorable and funny. It doesn't have to be a car at all... a stick of butter, a toy or an animal (search Google images for inspiration). It's also fun to see a toy rider if it is a car. Add something selfless (charity) or local flair to win the hearts of the judges. Parents take note: your child is the Cub Scout or Boy Scout, not you. My cousin's child had a blast painting the standard-issued chunk of wood gold by himself, and racing HIS "Gold Brick." Contrast that with the OCD parent whose super-flat wedge won by speed because his dad basically made it. As one dad said: "Your son gets to make HIS car when HE has a son." That's funny because it kinda defeats the whole goal of the event. The collaboration can be fun, but you almost want to see a single-day event where kids are working with help but without parents taking over.

Not much rally stuff going on these days... so.... the HHRT crew decided to test the first experimental soapbox car at the Farda compound. After an all night build and re-design, it was ready to go. The design is a stripped down Craftsman lawnmower with reworked tires, axles, steering, and seat. The cart used to have brakes from the stock lawnmower, but they have been taken out with bigger and better plans! Heres a short teaser... more video to come.

After the axel repair from steering failure from Trial Run #2 ) we were able to put together a decent run from start to finish. We learned the 36" All Thread rear axel we used was too flimsy to support the weight of the car and driver causing the top of the tires to rub agianst the body of the car. Replaced the All Thread with a 36" long, 5/16th" steel rod. -----Like a typical 8 yr old boy, he refuses to hit the brakes.....lol Feel free to ask any questions. I know building a Soapbox derby style car is new to probably everyone reading this so everyone is welcome to share their experiences. Grow your cub scout pack by recruiting at events like your school's "back to school night" and open house. Its best to set up 30 minutes early...offer the cars to families passing by and they will stay for a while. Invite boys in uniform from your pack to join you. Make it fun and the recruits will invade your outreach table and track while you talk to parents! This pinewood derby track ramp is made out of two lengths of fence boards (6 feet lengths) available at home supply stores like Home Depot. The tower is 18 inches high and ramp sections are 22 inches long, so they fit into the storage bin. The tower is also constructed out of fence board with 2 1/2 inch utility hinges, small T-hinge, velcro, gate hook/eye and a shelf support to maintain the "L" shape. The ramp is held together with twelve #8-32 x 1" machine screws, twleve #8-32 wing nuts, three metal connectors, and one support hinge to prevent ramp sagging. The blue track is from the scout shop at $15.00 for 5 sections (the video includes 7 sections). Cars include the 1/64 scale micro cars (Walmart) and regular pinewood derby racers (kit from Michaels to save time--my 7 year old built them and we painted together...he did not want to "donate" his official derby cars, since they are in retirement). Starting gate is made out of tongue depressors, colored with red Sharpie markers. The storage bin is from Walmart. Hope this helps and have fun! Post your questions and I'll be glad to respond. Brought to you by Pack 179 in Elk Grove, California.

building a high-performance, mid-engine super car from wood. The pinewood derby was created as an event for Cub Scouts in the Boy Scouts of America. The first pinewood derby was held on May 15, 1953 at the Scout House in Manhattan Beach, California by Cub Scout Pack 280C (the present Pack 713). The concept was created by the Pack’s Cubmaster Don Murphy, and sponsored by the Management Club at North American Aviation. Murphy's son was too young to participate in the popular Soap Box Derby races, so he came up with the idea of racing miniature wood cars. The cars had the same gravity-powered concept as the full-size Soap Box Derby cars, but were much smaller and easier to build. The pinewood derby had a sensational first year. The originator of the idea—Don Murphy and the Management Club of North American Aviation—sent out thousands of brochures to anyone who requested more information. The idea spread rapidly, and competitions were held across the country, mainly with recreation departments and nonprofit organizations including the Los Angeles County Department of Recreation. Of all that early enthusiasm, however, only the Boy Scouts of America made it part of an official program

Asked by my grandchildren: “Build us a go kart grandad!” . Old pram wheels are not easy to find so bought new wheels from gokartdaddy.com. The wheels and axles are top quality but the same could not be said about the brake. It is poorly engineered and will not work using the supplied bolt. The solution is not difficult - by adding an extra bracket, mounted on a block screwed to the side of the kart solved the problem. The steering limiters are essential if you want to avoid crushed toes. The ‘R’ pins supplied with the wheels came out the first time the kart crashed into a hedge and a wheel came off. so were replaced with proper cotter pins. The total price for this project: £150. True, you could buy a ready-made kart for less but it wouldn’t be such fun or get the same envious looks, not just from other children but adults also. Have fun but please remember: a fully functional brake is essential and a cycle helmet would be a wise precaution.
