56 - Sad at Dr Y leaving Breakspear - My lyme disease and rheumatoid arthritis journey

12:39
General rambling discussion about Dr Y leaving Breakspear and my Organic Acids Test results. Still doing well on paleo diet, despite flare caused by stomach bug. Someone asked what medicines I'm taking at the moment: hydroxychloroquine (400mg/day) and prednisolone (7mg/day). Unfortunately the prednisolone is necessary as my own body stopped making cortisol after too many years of steroid taking. I used to take clarithromycin, minocycline and Arcoxia (anti-inflammatory) as well, but stopped these last September.

Systemic Sclerosis (Scleroderma) Overview and Diagnosis Challenges

03:11
Yuval Cohen, PhD, CEO of Corbus provides and overview of systemic sclerosis (SSc), a rare and serious systemic autoimmune rheumatic disease with an unclear etiology. Systemic sclerosis affects approximately 90,000 people in the United States and Europe, with disease onset typically in mid-life. About 80 percent of SSc patients are women. The disease process in systemic sclerosis includes activation of the immune system, with damage to small blood vessels and fibrosis of the skin on internal organs, including lungs, heart, kidneys, gastrointestinal tract and musculoskeletal system. Chronic disease burden, morbidity and mortality are significant. Ten-year mortality rates are high at about 40-60%. Cardiopulmonary disease is the major cause of death in SSc. Immunosuppressive medications such as oral corticosteroids, mycophenolate, methotrexate and cyclophosphamide are used to treat patients with more severe signs and symptoms of disease. Currently, there are no FDA-approved treatments specifically indicated for the treatment of systemic sclerosis, other than pulmonary artery hypertension secondary to connective tissue diseases such as systemic sclerosis.

Stacey's First Chemo

03:24
This is my wife's first chemo. She called her breast cancer fight 'Her Journey', and wanted everything taped. She wanted to use her experience to inspire others and inform young women that breast cancer can affect them too. She was wonderful in spirit and full of positive energy. Unfortunately, her journey ended far too soon. On Oct 2nd, 2007 a few weeks after this video was shot, Stacey passed away from pneumonia after her 2nd round of chemo. She leaves behind a 2 year old and 4 year old son who were her everything. She was truly an angel and will be missed greatly.

lupus

07:46
Lupus erythematosus is a name given to a collection of autoimmune diseases in which the human immune system becomes hyperactive and attacks healthy tissues.[1] Symptoms of these diseases can affect many different body systems, including joints, skin, kidneys, blood cells, heart, and lungs. The most common and severe form is systemic lupus erythematosus. Under normal function, the immune system makes proteins called antibodies in order to protect and fight against antigens such as virus and bacteria. Let us know the Symptoms of SLE Symptoms can vary and can change over time. Common symptoms include: • Butterfly rash on the face, • appetite loss, • hair loss, • fever, • photosensitivity, • Raynaud's phenomenon, • pleuritis, • pericarditis. • severe fatigue • joint pain • joint swelling • headaches • anemia • blood-clotting problems • fingers turning white or blue and tingling when cold, which is known as Raynaud’s phenomenon Other symptoms depend on the part of the body the disease is attacking, such as the digestive tract, the heart, or the skin. So what causes SLE: The exact cause of SLE is unknown, but several factors have been linked with the disease. Such as Genetics The disease isn’t linked to a certain gene, but people with lupus often have family members with other autoimmune conditions. Environment Environmental triggers can include: • ultraviolet rays • Smoking. • certain medications • viruses • physical or emotional stress • trauma • Uv rays from fluorescent light bulbs • Exposure to silica dust • Sulfa drugs,. diuretics • Sun-sensitizing tetracycline drugs: • Penicillin or other antibiotic drugs: • Infections • Cold or a viral illness • Exhaustion • Injury • Emotional stress, such as divorce, illness, death in the family or other life complications • stress to the body such as surgery, physical harm, pregnancy or giving birth Sex and hormones SLE affects women more than men. they may experience more severe symptoms during pregnancy and with menstrual periods. So medical professionals believe that the female hormone estrogen may play a role in causing SLE but not confirmed.. 3) Biomarkers Biomarkers are another significant area of lupus research. Researchers have identified the following as potential biomarkers:10 • Anti-double-stranded DNA antibodies and complement C3a - both found in blood tests - as biomarkers for flares • Proteins in the urine of people with renal disease caused by lupus. • C-reactive protein (CRP) made by the liver, Diagnosis of SLE The symptoms of lupus help in diagnosis No one single test is diagnostic for SLE, but screenings that can help your doctor come to an informed diagnosis include: Blood test for lupus In people with a positive ANA, more tests are usually performed to check for other antibodies that can help confirm a diagnosis. doctors usually order an ANA panel, which checks for the following antibodies: • Anti-phospholipid • Anti-double-stranded DNA • Anti-Smith • Anti-U1RNP • Etc. Diagnostic tools for lupus include: • Medical history • Complete physical exam • Laboratory tests including complete blood count (CBC), erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR), urinalysis, blood chemistries, complement levels, and other autoantibody tests • Chest x ray • Skin biopsy • Kidney biopsy. Living With Lupus and Treatments 1. Treatment Overview Your treatment will depend on how severe symptoms are, whether organs are involved, and if your daily life is affected. 2. Home Treatment Reducing your daily stress will help you control lupus symptoms. 3. Medications While medications can't cure lupus, they can control symptoms -- and possibly prevent organ damage. 4. Surgery Surgery is only considered when lupus has seriously damaged the kidneys. 5. Other Treatment Relaxation therapies can greatly improve your quality of life. You may need specialist doctors to treat the many symptoms of lupus. Your health care team may include. • Rheumatologist - doctors of joint problem and arthritis • Clinical immunologist - doctors who treat immune system disorders • Nephrologist - • Hematologist - • Dermatologist - • Neurologist - Cardiologist - • Endocrinologist - • Dietitian • Occupational therapist • Nurse • Psychologist • Social worker. Types of medications used in the treatment of lupus include: • NSAIDs • Antimalarials • Corticosteroids • Immunosuppressives • Hormonal therapies such as (DHEA) • Intravenous immunoglobulin According to Cleveland Clinic, specific medications used to treat lupus include:13 • .. Steroid creams that can be directly applied to rashes • Hydroxychloroquine (Plaquenil) • Cyclophosphamide • Azathioprine • Methotrexate (Rheumatrex) • Cyclophosphamide (Cytoxan) and mycophenolate mofetil • Belimumab and Rituximab) Do not try any of these medication without talking to your doctor.

VF Extraordinary Vasculitis Stories: Elizabeth and Cryofribromangina

06:52
Elizabeth and Cryofibrinogenemia Vasculitis Elizabeth gives a stark explanation of what it's like to experience a flare up with Cryofibrinogenemia Vasculitis. " It's like this---when I'm having a flare it feels as if someone poured gas on me and lit me on fire. I can't take a cold shower because I break out worse. If I take a hot shower it feels as if I'm on fire." In this video, you will learn how this rare vasculitis first manifested in Elizabeth. She also talks about the challenges of a disease that can systemically trigger a reaction from a change in temperature, or exposure to an air-conditioned room. Despite the negative impact of the illness on her life, Elizabeth shares an upbeat message about how she no longer takes something as simple as walking for granted now. She also talks about how the Vasculitis Foundation has become her "second family" because it has put her in contact with other vasculitis patients. Produced by Ed and Mary Becker for the Vasculitis Foundation.
