By Jamie - Age 14 | For seven years of my life, I grew up in the foster system. I had to leave my mom’s house because of the decision to stop being there for her children. At the time, it was just me, an eight year old girl, and my brother, and an eleven year old severely autistic boy. One day the police showed up at our house. They asked me a lot of questions and then told us I would be staying at my aunt's house with her three kids, and my brother to a home for his needs. I stayed with my Aunt and cousins for a year and a half, until one day my Aunt told me to pack some clothes. I thought I was going to spend some time with my other Aunt and cousins, so happily I went and packed some clothes but, once I was done I went to the front room and my Aunt told me and my cousins I was going away for some time. I didn’t know what that meant but, we all cried, and my ??? showed up. My ??? didn’t tell me too much on our car ride there but, for most of the ride I cried. Once we got there, I was greeted by someone I would soon look up to as my sister, and by more people I would soon consider my family. I lived there for 2 and a half years. I wanted that to be my forever home, my forever family. But I found out my biological mom had another baby. He was only 5 months old and the state wanted us to be together forever. I moved in with him and his foster family. ??? threw up, cried, fussed, changed his diapers. I never thought I’d have a little brother, but there he was right before my eyes. I thought that was it for my foster placements but, I was wrong. Something didn’t work in that home and, we were moved after a year and a half of staying there. Now, we were with our very first white foster parent. A single mother, with three cute, but crazy kids. To say the least on that home, it didn’t work and, we left. On my last day of school, we were taken to our next foster home and, our last one thank you jesus. Another white family with four kids. A boy in the eleventh grade, a girl ???, another girl in the seventh grade, and another boy in like the fifth grade. And of course two parents, a mom and a dad and two lovely black dogs. Those people showed me and my brother so much love and care even after our hearts were broken by so many people at so many different times. I’ve never had a father figure in my life, so when I got to this one I didn’t really know how it felt to have a father at all. December 31, 2014, we were adopted by these people. Being here for two years now, I’ve received lots of love, and crazy rules and groundings. I’m blessed to have a place to finally call home Do you LOVE junk food? Tons of people do - especially when we're kids, it's everywhere. And so, getting addicted to sugar is easy. Do you kind of HATE healthy foods like vegetables and fruit? You're not alone. Jamie, up until a few years ago, ate nothing but junk food - all the time - chips, soda, candy, anything she could find that had lots and lots of sugar, or was fried, or processed, or just plain bad for you. It was all she craved. Even though her Mom told her not to eat all that junk food, and tried to get her to eat better healthier foods, she just ignored her and went on eating whatever she wanted. And this went on for a few years, until, Jamie started having trouble hearing. She didn't think much of it, but it got bad enough so that her Mom ended up taking her to the hospital. After the nurse tested her blood sugar - which Jamie hated since she hates blood and needles - she came back with bad news. Jamie had diabetes! It was a diagnosis she did not expect nor a disease she wanted. Her Mom was concerned, but Jamie was just totally confused - she had to learn all about it fast, AND, she had to take medicine - insulin - every single day. So, with a serious fear of needles and shots, Jamie found out that she had to give herself the shots, and monitor and test her blood sugar levels on her own. It was scary, and people would look at her when she had to do it and make her feel different and uncomfortable. But the hardest part of all was that she had to stop eating all of the junk food and sugar and start eating healthy foods. As a diabetic, She had to totally change her diet. And eventually, she got used to her new diet and at making healthier choices for eating and snacking. She even got used to the shots and is really living a normal life - but she does have to take care of herself a little more carefully than most kids her age and manage her diabetes.
