It helps doctors and drug manufacturers understand how it can affect different parts of the body. With this, they can adjust the chemistry of the drug to improve its performance or remove unwanted side effects. Gabapentin is the generic version of Neurontin. It is a drug used to prevent and control seizures. The drug can be taken on its own or as an adjuvant to other anti-seizure medications. Aside from that, adults can also consume it to alleviate neuropathic pain. Two of its known unverified uses include treatment for migraines and insomnia. However, although not a controlled substance, Gabapentin has also been the subject of substance abuse. Known on the streets as the “gabbies,” some have been taking advantage of this drug’s side effects to feel euphoria. WHAT IS EPILEPSY AND NEUROPATHIC PAIN? To fully understand how Gabapentin works, you must first know and understand the diseases it aims to prevent: epilepsy and neuropathic pains. Epilepsy is a disorder affecting the nervous system. It causes the sufferer to become unconscious suddenly and to have violent and uncontrolled movements in the body. If we think of it regarding electricity, epilepsy is like your body short circuiting. Now, let’s discuss neuropathic pains. This type of pain happens when the nervous system or nerves undergo an abnormally quick rate of degeneration. Doctors usually link it to other diseases such as herpes, shingles, or even diabetes. As you can observe, both the diseases Gabapentin treats are problems mainly on the nervous system, giving you an idea of how this drug works. HOW IS GABAPENTIN PROCESSED BY YOUR BODY? The body handles Gabapentin in the same way it processes other drugs. Once you take the recommended dosage of Gabapentin, it goes to the stomach where it breaks down into smaller particles. The components of gabapentin work by being absorbed in your intestines. The blood vessels carry the absorbed Gabapentin along with the other nutrients to the liver. Now, the drug goes through a “screening process.” As it is a foreign object, the liver will do its job and block a certain amount of it. Once transported into the brain, Gabapentin will stabilize the electrical impulses that fire within the central nervous system. Now, the way neurotransmitters send messages to the brain is now affected. Gabapentin does that by altering the amount of GABA, a “nerve-calming” agent produced by the body. At the same time, it inhibits the production of glutamate, a “nerve-exciting” agent. Experts blame this neurotransmitter as the reason why epileptic seizures happen. WHAT ARE ITS COMMON SIDE EFFECTS? Although quite effective in preventing epileptic seizures, it comes with some side effects that may range from very mild to severe. Some of them happen naturally as a result of how the drug works. Drowsiness: Knowing already what GABA and its function in your body, it makes sense to feel drowsiness as an effect. It is the reason why some have also used it to cure insomnia. What GABA does is calm the brain, thus causing drowsiness. Gabapentin/Neurontin Review

07:05
Gabapentin/Neurontin, is a medication used primarily for seizure disorders and pain associated with the nerves. It can be used for nerve pain related to the herpes virus or shingles. It is also commonly used by diabetics who have suffered nerve pain. I find that this medication continues to work wonder for me, even after daily use for 3+ years. It helps prevent my migraines (at least it seems to) and once I have one, it helps the dull the pain. It also has help with occasional back pain problems. It has been a life saver for my insomnia. I am able to cope better with my day to day task because this medication helps me cope with my Clinical Depression, of which has haunted me since the passing of my father. There is no such thing as a miracle pill or a miracle cure for anything, but this medication has been a huge help for me over the years. Thanks for reading/watching my video.

Gabapentin for dogs: is it a dog pain killer that works?

05:58
When it comes to finding a dog pain killer that works, what about giving your dog gabapentin? Is it a true pain killer and replacement for the more commonly used non-steroidal anti-inflammatory pain killers like rimadyl? Or is it like tramadol which works well in people but not in dogs? Get your free copy of my pain monitoring chart to make sure your pet is as comfortable as possible: https://ourpetshealth.com/pain-monitoring-chart-for-dogs Gabapentin is a human drug that is used to treat some seizures and nerve related pain.  We don't know exactly how gabapentin works, although it appears to reduce the release of excitatory neurotransmitters. If a pain signal is blocked from reaching the brain then the result will be a reduction in pain. Gabapentin acts on the nerves themselves unlike some other pain killers like the non-steroidal anti-inflammatories (NSAIDs). Neuropathic pain is essentially pain that is generated by the nerves themselves and results in 2 main conditions.  The first of these is known as hyperalgesia which is an increased sensitivity to pain. The second condition is allodynia and is where something that is not normally painful becomes painful. The good news is that this pain wind up is reversible, although it can take several months.  Our standard pain killers in dogs and cats, the NSAIDs, will help with this.  Gabapentin though can also be used to help your dog or cat become pain free faster, or where our non-steroidals are not enough by themselves. Gabapentin may well also play a useful role in helping keep our pets comfortable after surgery or injury but should probably not be used by itself. Gabapentin is a very safe drug with few side effects to be concerned about.  The most common side effects of gabapentin in dogs and cats are sedation and wobbliness.  Some animals may also develop vomiting. The biggest danger with giving gabapentin is using a human liquid formulation that contains xylitol. GABAPENTIN WITHDRAWAL

10:48
I have been trying to get off Gabapentin. I woke up sick again, I did not take one last night. I have to take two a day so my body does not have withdrawal symptoms...I have been tying for two weeks now to stop but I get sick, very sick. I guess I am addicted to this drug. I don't mean to discourage anyone, it does take the nerve pain away. You got to do what makes you feel normal. I wouldn't say the drug is bad because it has truly helped me so much but the withdrawal is very real.

What Does Gabapentin Withdrawal Feel Like ? Gabapentin Withdrawal Symptoms

What Does Gabapentin Withdrawal Feel Like ? Gabapentin Withdrawal Symptoms Subscribe To Get New Videos Daily: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCi1zZ8_Q7yqKInXImLCLfXw The US Food and Drug Administration states that you should never start or stop taking medicines without talking to your healthcare provider, and this is doubly true of prescription drugs like gabapentin. An Anticonvulsant that can sometimes cause serious side effects when treatment is stopped abruptly, gabapentin’s withdrawal syndrome often feels similar to the syndrome caused by opioid dependence, but it can in fact be much more dangerous. Recognize Gabapentin Withdrawal: Some individuals do abuse gabapentin, an action can possibly lead to dependence, addiction, and other issues. But even if you have been taking the drug safely and as directed, you must never stop the medication suddenly. If you do, the drug can cause many side effects that are similar to those associated with opioid withdrawal, such as: Gabapentin Withdrawal: Anxiety and irritability are common gabapentin withdrawal symptoms. Anxiety. Changes in appetite. Depression. Fatigue. Itching. Irritability. Sleep disturbances. Headaches. Dizziness. Muscle and bone pain. Abdominal pain. Nausea and vomiting. Restlessness. Sweating. Anyone who has experienced the usual withdrawal symptoms associated with opioids will be able to recognize the signs of gabapentin withdrawal. However, there are other, more dangerous symptoms that must be noted and treated immediately for the individual’s safety. For example, many individuals who take gabapentin are epileptic. The medication treats seizures by “decreasing abnormal excitement in the brain” . But when someone with this condition suddenly stops taking the drug, they can sometimes experience intense seizures that do not stop. In this instance, the individual must be taken to the hospital immediately. Gabapentin has also been known to cause serious depression, sometimes more intense than that caused by most prescription opioids during withdrawal. This can lead to suicidal thoughts or actions, requiring that the individual be kept under surveillance at a residential or inpatient center so they will not be able to hurt themselves. Gabapentin withdrawal can sometimes be mild and similar to that caused by opioid depdendence, but because the drug is an anticonvulsant, it can cause a more severe syndrome in certain individuals. People want to know if Gabapentin or Neurontin can cause uncontrollable movements. - An older neurologist, described me; "Ballism, Chorea, and dystonic posture to the right hand. She has never taken neuroleptics. Jerking movements of the head, neck and arms, not so much to the legs. A casual relationship to Gabapentin has not been identified." He said in a referral to a university movement disorder clinic, "This is a very odd movement disorder, and stranger still is its possible relationship to Gabapentin. I have never heard of this possibility." The specialist said, "While Gabapentin is associated with dystonic reactions, these have been reported in the setting of chronic use and resolve when the medication is discontinued." Warning: Don't suddenly stop taking this medication. Always consult your physician.

Neurontin To Treat Adults with Nerve Pain Caused by Shingles - Overview

00:51
http://www.rxwiki.com/neurontin https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLXxn_pCvHVm5rtYCS2sLMNQ2j1LWbE0_L Neurontin, the brand name form of gabapentin, is a prescription medication used to treat adults with nerve pain caused by shingles. Shingles is a painful rash that is caused by the varicella-zoster virus, the virus that also causes chickenpox. Neurontin is also used in combination with other medications to treat partial seizures. Neurontin belongs to a group of drugs called anticonvulsants, which help treat seizures by decreasing abnormal excitement in the brain. It also works by altering the way the body senses pain. This medication comes in tablet, capsule, and oral (by mouth) solution forms and is taken up to 3 times a day, with or without food. The capsules are taken with a full glass of water. Common side effects of Neurontin include dizziness, lack of coordination, and drowsiness. Do not drive or operate heavy machinery until you know how Neurontin affects you.

Opiate withdrawal remedies. Comfort meds.

02:44
Still day 2. The following are medications and doses I recommend. But that being said again I am no doctor. Just someone who's been here many many times and knows a lot about these medications. If you do have questions the safest bet is to contact your doctor. Any doctor. .1 mg clonodine. .1-.2 mg 2-3 times a day depending on severity of symptoms. I currently only use this at night as it makes me so so weak and tired. It's a blood pressure med and old school bit of withdrawal arsenal. I wouldn't take for more then a week due to possible rebound hypertension. .25-1 mg xanax, or whatever benzo. Don't substitute one addiction for another!!! Use sparingly, and only at night if possible. Don't use for more then a few days if possible. 50 mg trazodone. Old school med used for a variety of things including most commonly depression and insomnia. Some people need a higher dose. 100 mg is really good for me. I wouldn't go higher then 150 mg ever. Above meds are prescription meds that most doctors will give you for opiate withdrawal. 15-30 mg loperamide(Imodium) every 6-8 hours if needed. Or every 12-24 as needed. Dose can be higher or lower depending on severity of addiction. People have become dependent on this. This honestly is only something I do if I have no other option. With the prescriptions that I have during this detox the loperamide isn't usually needed. Last resort...So again don't substitute addictions!! In high doses it can almost completely eliminate w/d for some people. And some only need the loperamide. I personally only take this for a day or two and taper my last couple doses down. As I believe having a BM is better then not, to continue to clean you out. (Please note high doses taken for a long period, or even a short period can prolong the length of your w/d, similar to the way a Suboxone taper would.. So this choice is entirely up to you. Taken as directed will at least help with diarrhea). Other helpful meds and things: ibuprofen. Ginger. Fish oil. Multivitamins. Healthy food. Hot baths and showers. Exercise. Magnesium. Epsom salt. Electrolytes. Sugar and caffeine at times. Marijuana. Distraction. Distraction. Distraction. If I can do this after over a decade. You can to. Do your research. Listen to people's stories of recovery. Find and keep a hobby. Anything. Get your soul back. ❤️

How long does it take to Detox from Opiates?

How long does it take to Detox from Opiates? The answer can vary depending on the severity of opiate dependency. The Opiate detox process commonly uses medication-assisted treatment to help taper off of Opiates in order to reduce withdrawal symptoms. Some common opiate withdrawal symptoms can include: - Restless legs - Body Shaking - Chills - Flu-like symptoms - Extreme body ache - Various gastrointestinal problems - and Headaches Unfortunately, because these symptoms can at times become so strong, it can lead to opiate relapsing. To remedy this, Buprenorphine(agonist) and Naloxone(antagonist) are used to help safely go through Opiate detoxing and minimize the withdrawal effects.

What You Need To Know About Gabapentin High | Gabapentin High Experience Subscribe To Get New Videos Daily: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCi1zZ8_Q7yqKInXImLCLfXw Many individuals believe gabapentin cannot cause a serious high when taken in large doses, but unfortunately, the drug does have dangerous side effects that some users find desirable. Therefore, it is important to be able to recognize if your loved one may be getting high on this prescription medication. Signs of a Gabapentin High: High on Gabapentin. Staring and appearing confused are signs of a gabapentin high. According to the National Library of Medicine, gabapentin users are urged not to “take more or less of it or take it more often than prescribed” by their doctor. Those who do so often participate in this recreational drug use in order to get high. Gabapentin can cause euphoria as well as a high similar to marijuana’s. A gabapentin high can also cause a person to become zombie-like, drowsy, confused, or extremely quiet. They may stare off into space or stop talking entirely. As stated by the British Journal of General Practice, “The drug’s effects vary with the user, dosage, past experience, psychiatric history, and expectations.” If your loved one suddenly and inexplicably begins showing signs of: Confusion. Euphoria. Drowsiness. Relaxation. Giddiness or giggliness. Talkativeness. Staring or unresponsiveness. there is a strong possibility they may be high on their gabapentin medication. Other Signs of Gabapentin Misuse: If you believe you may have noticed the signs of a gabapentin high but need more proof that your loved one may be in need of help, consider talking to them first about their use of gabapentin and whether or not the drug is helping them. If they are abusing the medication, it is likely that they will not want to talk about it and will keep changing the subject. Gabapentin can also cause serious depressive symptoms when a person withdraws from the drug. If the individual seems extremely happy or content one day and very depressed the next, there is a strong chance they may be abusing the drug. Can the Recreational Use of Gabapentin Lead to Addiction? In addition, your loved one might be obtaining the drug illegally, which would mean they might be stealing or falsifying prescriptions. If they are, they may also have a book of blank prescriptions in their room. Other items that could point to gabapentin abuse include multiple prescription bottles given by different doctors and materials with which to prepare the drug for injection. Someone who begins to exhibit these signs and symptoms and is already taking a gabapentin prescription is probably abusing their medication. However, its recent prevalence as a drug of abuse suggests that someone could find it through illegal channels as well. https://www.addictions.com/gabapentin-abuse/how-to-know-if-someone-you-love-is-high-on-gabapentin/ Music Source: www.bensound.com Watch Popular Videos : How to Tell If You Have a Blood Clot In Leg https://youtu.be/hU7dwIfrdgg Learn About Gabapentin Dog Dosage https://youtu.be/FHl_EMpZrMI Can You Get High On Gabapentin ? https://youtu.be/rHERNWVVdOM Do Boys Get Periods? What Is Phenobarbital? | Epilepsy

Watch more Epilepsy & Seizure Disorders videos: http://www.howcast.com/videos/502062-What-Is-Phenobarbital-Epilepsy Dr. Steve Wolf: Phenobarbital is one of our oldest anti-seizure medications that have been around. It's indicated for both seizure types. The major problem with it is sedation, sleepiness. That's why the newer medications have a lot less sleepiness and side effects and waking issues. Patty McGoldrick: Now it still is used a lot of times in infants, children who present with neonatal seizures, and that's one of the first medications that's given to them. It's also used for people who present in status, which is prolonged seizures, and who may be in the emergency room. Not necessarily as the first medication that's used for that, but somewhere down the line. Dr. Wolf: The problem is in the emergency room, when you use it, it can really knock you out, and put you to sleep. And of course, if you give too much of it, it actually can affect your respiration. Patty: Now, the other big issue with phenobarbital is that we've been using it for years to control seizures in newborns and in infants. And actually, the latest research has shown it can cause much more cognitive damage than we initially thought. So we're trying not to use that as rapidly as we did in the past. We use some of the newer medications. We try to get children off phenobarbital pretty quickly if they were using it. Dr. Wolf: There were studies in the 80's showing that it can affect hyperactivity in young children, as well as reading scores and attention scores. So again, this drug can have a lot of potential cerebral side effects. That's why it's nice about some of the newer medications that are out there that might have less cognitive effects. So it's important to discuss with the people taking care of you whether this is the right medication for you, and what are the other choices.

Sonja Elmquist writing in Bloomberg News reported that Pfizer Inc.’s best-selling drug, Lyrica (pregabalin), “didn’t help patients with the most common cause of back pain,” severe lumbar spinal stenosis, “any more than a placebo in a small study.” The study’s findings, published in the journal Neurology, casts “doubt on the potential for doctors to expand the medication’s use.” The FDA “has not approved the drug’s use for spinal stenosis,” but Lyrica “and similar medicines are often used to treat lower back pain.” Comment: I don’t use Lyrica for back pain. Neuropathy, Nerve Pain and Social Security Disability

07:03
Chronic, intractable nerve pain or neuropathy can be so uncomfortable that getting through a work day will be impossible. Since Social Security defines disability in terms of how your medical problems prevent you from working, neuropathy can be a disabling condition. As I discuss in this video, disability judges expect to see reports from specialists like neurologists, nerve condition study test results and prescriptions for strong nerve pain medications like neurontin. SSD judges also look for causation - what is the source of your nerve pain - is it a disc problem, diabetes, a medication reaction or something else. If causation is clear you may be able to argue that listing 11.14 applies, although in most cases your attorney will present a functional capacity argument - that your nerve pain has so reduced your capacity for work that you would not be reliable at any job. If your peripheral neuropathy cannot be controlled despite your doctor’s best efforts and your compliance with recommended treatment, then your chances at winning SSDI or SSI are good. ===============FREE SURVIVAL KIT==================== Don’t know where to begin? Has Gabapentin Become a Drug of Abuse ? Is Gabapentin A Narcotic?

Has Gabapentin Become a Drug of Abuse ? Is Gabapentin A Narcotic? Subscribe To Get New Videos Daily: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCi1zZ8_Q7yqKInXImLCLfXw Gabapentin is approved by the US Food and Drug Administration for the treatment of epilepsy and postherpetic neuralgia. It is often prescribed off-label for other pain syndromes, anxiety and mood disorders, restless legs syndrome, alcohol withdrawal, and other conditions. Gabapentin is an analog of gamma-aminobutyric acid, a neurotransmitter that slows down the activity of nerve cells in the brain, but does not bind to GABA receptors or affect the production or uptake of GABA. How gabapentin works and how it relieves pain and suppresses seizures are unknown. Gabapentin does not exhibit affinity for benzodiazepine, opioid, or cannabinoid 1 receptor sites, which are often activated in drugs of abuse. Gabapentin is not scheduled as a controlled substance, indicating little potential for abuse and addiction. A small number of postmarketing cases report gabapentin misuse and abuse. Although the Rationale for abuse is unknown, some individuals describe "euphoria, improved sociability, a marijuana-like 'high', relaxation and sense of calm." Other patients report feeling "zombie-like." 5 In 2004, a report described gabapentin misuse in correctional facilities in Florida. A recall of all gabapentin prescriptions at one of the larger correctional facilities revealed that only 19 of 96 prescriptions were in the possession of the intended patients. Subsequently, 5 inmates reported they were inhaling the powder from gabapentin capsules intranasally. A 2007 report described the case of a 67-year-old woman with mood disorders and a history of alcohol abuse who was prescribed gabapentin for pain from polyneuritis. Owing to tolerance, she was prescribed 4800 mg/day, but further escalated her intake to 7200 mg daily. She requested gabapentin without a prescription from pharmacists and visited numerous physicians, exaggerating her symptoms, to obtain the desired quantities. Another report described 3 cases of gabapentin-associated withdrawal symptoms after abrupt discontinuation of total daily doses of 4800 mg, 3600 mg, and 2400 mg. Similar symptoms were reported in 2 patients with histories of alcohol abuse. The first case involved a 33-year-old man taking 3600 mg of gabapentin daily, which was twice his prescribed dose. He had been obtaining gabapentin refills early to reduce his craving for alcohol and make him feel calmer. The second case described a 63-year-old man with a history of alcohol abuse who was taking gabapentin at 4900 mg/day instead of the prescribed 1800 mg/day. After presentation to the hospital and discontinuation of gabapentin, he developed severe withdrawal symptoms. The use of nonprescribed gabapentin by patients attending substance abuse clinics has also been reported. ADDICTION CURE? - NALTREXONE

04:19
Look it up. Naltrexone breaks the cycle of addiction and brings new hope for alcohol dependence and opiate drug addiction. How long will the FDA keep it available? Why aren't we hearing about this? Naltrexone is one of the first anti-craving medications approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for use in the treatment of alcoholism and opiate addiction. In clinical trials, LDN has been shown to halt disease progression in Crohn's disease and certain cancers, including pancreatic cancer, and to reduce symptoms in multiple sclerosis (MS) and autism. Ongoing trials are evaluating LDN in fibromyalgia and HIV/AIDS. Anecdotally, LDN has been shown to improve almost every autoimmune and neurodegenerative condition, including Parkinson's disease and amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). Naltrexone modulates the immune system and promotes healing. Naltrexone comes in two forms: 1) Vivirol®-an injectable time released form of naltrexone that is taken once a month. Visit Vivitrol's website for more information. 2) ReVia© or naltrexone- taken daily in pill form. Here are some of the many benefits of naltrexone in the treatment of drug and alcohol dependence: • Most patients experience dramatic reductions in craving within hours of taking the first dose. • Naltrexone blocks the high of alcohol and narcotics, reducing the incentive to drink or use drugs and significantly increasing treatment success. • Naltrexone is a non-habit forming medication that can be discontinued at any time. • Naltrexone can be given with other medications, especially those used to treat depression and other such psychiatric conditions. • Naltrexone works best when used in combination with relapse-prevention therapies. From a clinical psychiatrist: "Naltrexone does work very well in about 75% of addicts who take it. No detox/hospitalization cost. It only fails in 12% of people who give it a chance. Only 10% of people drop out of treatment since it is so easy. It may not work unless you wait a full hour before you start drinking after taking the pill. A must read on the subject would be The Cure for Alcoholism by Roy Eskapa."

What Is Lamictal? | Epilepsy

01:56
Watch more Epilepsy & Seizure Disorders videos: http://www.howcast.com/videos/502059-What-Is-Lamictal-Epilepsy Lamictal or Lamotrigine is another great medication that's used to control epilepsy. It's been out for a number of years. In fact it is now available in a generic formalization but it's also available in a extended release and in a o d t, which is a oral disintegrating tablet. So it's a pill you can place on your tongue. It's great for little kids and it just dissolves. It's another sodium channel drug which is interesting. It's good for both partial complex seizures as well as generalized seizures. It also has a FDA approval for bipolar disorder as well. And it's really well tolerated. Very few side effects. The big side effect and the big black box warning with Lamotrigine is that you can develop a bad rash from it. It's called a Stevens Johnson reaction. So what happens is if you start the dose abruptly or you try to treat it too quickly and raise the dose to quickly, or if you use in combination with other medications. You can develop this rash that's sort of a red raised rash. Usually on the trunk and the chest. It gets worse, it can spread to the mouth. If that happens it's something that needs to get treated in the hospital with steroids, but usually you can avoid that happening at by slowly increasing the dose, by telling the patients about the possibility of this rash developing. And if the rash develops you hold the medication and give them benadryl. But the rash shouldn't stop you from thinking about using this medication. Very few people get the rash. The rash is usually easily manageable, because it's such a great medication with few cognitive side effects. No weight gain. Only rarely have people complained about insomnia with lymictal. But in overall it's a great medication. It works well and it's used for a bunch of different seizure types. Works on sodium channels. Well tolerated and it's also another one that can be used in pregnancy at lower doses not at higher doses.

Mayo Clinic Study May Help Cool Hot Flashes

03:59
A pill used for nerve pain offers women relief from hot flashes, Mayo Clinic researchers report at the 45th Annual Meeting of the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO). They say the agent, pregabalin, decreased hot flash severity and frequency about 20 percent more than did a placebo agent. Thus, pregabalin appears to offer about the same benefit as gabapentin, an older, related drug, as well as newer classes of antidepressants. Hot flashes are a major problem in many women, and for those who opt not to take hormonal therapies or antidepressants, pregabalin appears to be another treatment option, says the studys lead author, Charles Loprinzi, M.D., a medical oncologist at the Mayo Clinic in Minnesota. While pregabalin offers about the same benefit as gabapentin, women who use it only need to take two pills a day, versus three for gabapentin, he says. Side effects can occur with the use of either drug. However, in this study, they were not severe enough that participants stopped using the active study drug any more often than did patients who were taking placebos, researchers say. Dr. Loprinzi has pioneered the field of nonhormonal hot flash therapy, which he began researching decades ago to help breast cancer patients using tamoxifen, an anti-estrogen treatment that creates symptoms of menopause. He is the first researcher to test the use of antidepressants, compared to placebo treatment, for hot flashes. It's based off an old medication, carbamazepine or Tegretol, as you probably heard in the past. It's another fast sodium channel drug and very good for seizures with partial-complex seizures. B: Seizures that start in one area of the brain and spread. It's well tolerated with fewer side effects than Tegretol or Carbatrol, which it's derived from. The biggest issue with that, the biggest side effect is, you can get some drowsiness when you start taking it. That usually goes away within a week or so. B: You start the dose slowly and gradually increase it so there are fewer side effects. There is a risk of an allergic reaction, as there is with any medication. This presents, usually, as a red rash all over the trunk and chest. If that happens, just stop the medication. Take Benadryl, and then, slowly increase it again. There is the most sodium issues, but more in adults than in children. A: It's also called an enzyme inducer. You have to watch what medications you mix this with, because it could affect how the other medications perform. When you start the medication, you might have to increase the dose after a few weeks, to adjust for how the liver is metabolizing it. It's a medication that you need to watch what you're using it with, and watch those rare side affects. B: It can also decrease the efficacy of birth control pills. You need to be careful if you're on birth control pills, that you use some other means of contraception. A: Trileptal or oxcarbazepine is a first line indicated drug, very good for partial-complex seizures, not to be used in generalized epilepsy, with very few side effects and very well tolerated.

Menopause And How To Treat Hot Flashes|Cure Menopause Symptoms With Dr Pam

Menopause And How To Treat Hot Flashes|Cure Menopause Symptoms With Dr Pam. hitp://drpam.com There are several ways to treat hot flashes. Some are prescription medications, some are over the counter medications, and some are just life-style changes. Every doctor is going to have you start with life-style changes first. What is that? Well, layering your clothing to start. Some women like to keep a little fan on their desk at work, or in their pocketbook – just a personal fan to cool them off. Some women like to put their head in a freezer for a minute of two. Sometimes at work, I’ll walk in and see my nurse putting her head in the freezer and I’ll ask her what she is looking for. She will say, “Nothing, I’m just cooling my head off.” That works very well. There are several medications that you can use. The standard therapy is estrogen replacement therapy. Women are pretty educated now to know that there is a risk of blood clots: blood clots that can travel to your lungs causing a pulmonary embolus, your head causing a stroke, or your heart causing a heart attack. There is also a definite association with breast cancer. There is a lot of women who can’t or won’t take that risk – and that’s OK. You have got to talk to your doctor about it. We want you on the lowest dose of estrogen for the shortest amount of time. For those women who can’t take estrogen, there are other medications. There is a new Swedish pollen extract called, Relizen. This is sold over the counter and has had clinical trials which show that it helps hot flashes. There are also some other medications that we use “off-label.” They are not made for hot flashes, but we have found, over time, that women who are on these medications get better. One of those medications is gabapentin, which is also called Neurontin®; another one is pre-gabapentin which is called Lyrica®, and Clonidine®, which is a blood pressure medication. Physicians for some time, have known that low-dose anti-depressants can also help with the hot flashes. Very recently, a new anti-depressant called, Brisdelle®, which is a low dose of Paxil® or paroxetine, has been approved by the FDA to treat hot flashes. Sometimes all of these medications are used alone or in combinations until we can get the hot flashes under control. You have to talk to your doctor about what is right for you.

Hacky Clark, a successful estate attorney explains firsthand how PHN has affected his life and PHN expert Dr. Michael Oxman from the University of California, San Diego describes risks, pain-relieving treatments, and the importance of the shingles vaccine.
