Their lives only have meaning if they are reaching out and striving for their goals, at least this is what Aristotle said sometime around 330 B.C. The notion of purpose is the origin of goal setting theory. Let’s start with the basics…what are goals? For our purposes, a goal is “the object of a person’s ambition, an aim or desired result.” Bottom line, it’s something we work towards, something we want to achieve and we put steps in place to do it. Almost an unlimited number of goal types exist. Your business environment and industry may dictate what type of goals your management team sets and flows down into the organization. For example, during a business strategy session, leaders may create long term goals with a typical target timeframe of 5 years or more. They’ll break these down to shorter term goals. Then, your organizations high level long term and short term goals will be broken down at a department level. Marketing/Sales, Finance, Production/Quality, Supply Chain, Human Resources! You got it. You’ll need to develop plans and objectives to support the business goals. That’s a whole other course. And finally, managers and employees can work together on building their goals.

In January 2009, the BC Pubic Service Agency, the central agency responsible for delivering human resource services to 26,000 employees in the BC Public Service, embarked on a significant transformation agenda to: improve organizational effectiveness, reduce overall costs of services by $6 million and support the goals articulated in the Corporate Human Resource Plan. The first step was to transform the service delivery model, creating a single channel for customer services. The second step enabled the allocation of savings to develop and implement new services to support our customers such as performance coaching, investigations, business consulting and executive account directors. Added to the transformation was new self service technology. The BC Public Service Agency leads the way in the public service in Canada through its implementation of a comprehensive and progressive HR service delivery model.

SMART Goal Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, Time-bound Many professions use SMART goals. SMART stands for goals that are Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Realistic/Relevant and Time-based. Specific might be the difference between a goal to “get healthy” and a goal to eat an apple each day. An apple-a-day may or may not equal becoming more healthy, except for the person who eats almost no fruits or vegetables. For that person, the Specific goal is much more useful. Specific often leads to Measurable. We can count if an apple was eaten each day, it is quantifiable as opposed to whether the person was “healthy” that day. Achievable means the goal can actually be completed. A school district with a 65% high school graduation rate that sets the goal of 100% graduation has a very low probability of achieving such a goal. R is sometimes said to be Realistic and other times Relevant. I like Relevant better because there are times when goals don’t seem to make sense in the larger context of the organization. Goals must be prioritized to take advantage of limited energy and Relevant gets at this idea. Time-bound is when the goal is to be achieved. SMART is a simple acronym to keep goals Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant and Time-bound.
