How to Survive Natural Disasters. Here’s a list of survival tips that can save your life in an emergency. We live in a time when natural disasters occur more and more often and get more and more devastating. Many of us believe we should blame the human race for that. Whether it’s true or not, we all want to know how to survive when those disasters happen. Some rules are universal for most natural disasters. A national campaign called Ready was started in the United States to inform the population about how to get ready for and survive in different emergency situations. It recommends having a basic survival kit to provide you with the most important things just in case. Remember you will need to have enough food, water, and other supplies for at least 72 hours after the disaster. “Other supplies” include a battery powered weather radio, flashlight, first aid kit, a whistle, a dust mask, personal sanitation items (such as moist towelettes), pliers, can opener for food, maps of your area and an emergency cell phone with backup batteries. TIMESTAMPS Hurricane 0:40 Tornado 1:45 Tsunami 3:15 Flood 4:10 Avalanche 5:03 Wildfire 6:00 Earthquake 7:00 SUMMARY - If a hurricane starts while you are driving, leave your vehicle and find a building to shelter in, or a ditch. Stopping in an overpass will not save you. If your home is a trailer and there is enough time to flee to a safe area – do it. - If a tornado starts when you are in a public building, follow the same rules. You want to stay as low as possible. Avoid windows and open spaces such as auditoriums, gyms, and large hallways. Desks and benches can give you some extra protection if you get under them. It is impossible to outrun a tornado. - Tsunamis are so fast they hit the coast minutes after the earthquake. Remember that tall buildings, including hotels right in the beach area, can provide an excellent shelter. In case a tsunami finds you at sea, stay there instead of going back to the coast. It won’t be a safe haven. - Don’t try to be the bravest person around and stay in your house once you hear the evacuation warning. Leave for safety in higher grounds with your important papers in a waterproof container. If a flash flood gives you no time to evacuate and the water is all around you, don’t try to swim across it. - When an avalanche starts, try to move to the side of the slope as fast as you can. There will be more snow in the center of the flow. To move faster, drop any heavy equipment you have on you. If you can’t escape it, try using a sturdy tree to keep you above the snow. - If you find yourself in a wildfire area, it is critically important to ensure that you can breathe. If you fail to do it, you can pass out in the midst of a danger zone. Use a wet cloth to cover your nose and mouth and escape to safety. - If an earthquake starts when you are inside, stay where you were. Experts say that during an earthquake you must drop to the floor, get underneath a table, cover your neck and head with one hand, and hold on with the other hand. Your entire body must be under the table. Don’t try to run out of the building - the exterior of a building is one of the most dangerous places. There are many reasons why a building, or a group of buildings may need to be evacuated including: • Fires • Chemical Spills • Toxic or Explosive Gas Releases, • Explosions • Violent Behaviour, and • Bomb Threats. The larger the building, the more organisation is required to ensure everyone is evacuated effectively and as safely as possible. But regardless of the size or type of building or buildings, or number of employees, every organisation should have a tried and tested evacuation plan. This program covers: • The Evacuation Plan • The Evacuation Team • The Chief Warden • Your Responsibility • Training and Practice Every Building must have a tried and tested evacuation plan, and everyone must be familiar with it, and know their role.

It has come to the attention of the Pearl District Neighborhood Association's Livability Committee that many of the residential buildings and businesses in our "mixed use" neighborhood do not have Emergency Preparedness Plans in place. As a result, we are ill-prepared to help one another in the event of natural or human-caused hazards. In response, the Livability Committee has done a considerable amount of research and development for an Emergency Preparedness Workshop & Resource Fair for the neighborhood at large. This event will occur in September, which is National Emergency Preparedness Month. The mission for this event is two-fold: 1) to increase our community's level of awareness that risk reduction can be achieved through education and Emergency Preparedness Planning; and 2) a Resource Fair which provides the tools needed for residential buildings, small businesses, organizations and individuals to develop EP Plans which are unique to each setting. For example, there will be take-away information on Evacuation Systems for High-Rise Buildings, Small Business Emergency Planning, Family Disaster Plans, EP for Special Needs Individuals, Ready-Set-Go for Children, Caring for Animals, Emergency Supplies Kits, etc. We are making this special plea to our entire neighborhood to get involved. Please save the date, and join us! We hope to see you there. Video/Slideshow By: Guy Bodin/The Image Factor/Photographer

With the heavy rain and flooding happening around the province, it is very appropriate that next week is Emergency Preparedness Week. Perth County and its member municipalities are taking this opportunity to remind residents that emergencies do occur in Ontario, and they should take the appropriate steps to be prepared. People are also urged to check www.perthcounty.ca/emergency for copies of the County’s Emergency Preparedness Guide. Follow them on Twitter and like them on Facebook for regular alerts and information. FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE May 7th – 13th is National Emergency Preparedness Week, a week Perth County and its member municipalities devote to reinforcing the importance of having a plan - for yourself, your family, your pets, your business, your farm, and anyone important to you. This year Perth County is emphasizing Severe Weather Awareness in the wake of early thunderstorms and wind damage in the area. The season got off to an early start with storms in March, an April 11th tornado in the Thamesford area and wind damage in Perth South and Perth East on April 30th. "Preparing in advance for the emergencies that can happen here is the best way to ensure you're ready when an emergency arises," says Chief Linda Rockwood who heads up the County’s Paramedic and Emergency Management initiatives. "We encourage everyone to spend a few minutes learning about the risks, developing your emergency plans and being prepared." Dave Colvin, Perth County’s Emergency Management Coordinator says "It is important to know what can happen here... have a plan and prepare for it. You can’t prevent a tornado but you can know when one can occur, have a plan, and prepare when one threatens." To learn more about emergency preparedness and download their preparedness materials, visit www.perthcounty.ca/emergency or follow them on Facebook.

Emergency Preparedness And Survival Guide: http://tinyurl.com/chu7uf8 This emergency preparedness and survival guide will prepare you for any emergency in less than 7 days. You don't have to be rich to follow what is taught inside the emergency preparedness and survival guide. How long can you and your family survive without food or water? What if you couldn't even purchase a loaf of bread for $10,000??? Emergency preparedness and survival guide will show you how to stay safe in your own home without ever having to leave the comforts of your home. Start planning and stockpiling the right items right now! No need to bugout! No need to have lots of money. This guide will show you what to do and how to do it yet not draw attention from your friends, family, neighbors and co-workers. This survival was scrutinized by an former Navy Seal. It is now or never, prepare for home emergency using this Emergency Preparedness And Survival Guide. The fact of the matter is that not one person knows just exactly are the specific problems that could eventually result during a major and over all emergency. The best thing one could possibly due is make himself prepare for anything that could happen. Here are the 3 main areas to consider when preparing to Survive in Your Home: Emergency Preparedness And Survival Guide will show you... Having enough food and supplies, without attracting the zombies How to "Quietly" defend your home fortress by being able to recognize and diffuse situations before they turn violent... And if violence is the only way to keep off looters and criminals, you must have a plan to quickly drop the wrath of God on your violators to make sure they are an example How to "Vanish" - when a crisis event happens - you want your neighbors to forget you ever existed, so you can enjoy all your stockpile in peace, without attracting hungry mobs. Master these three, and you're as good as gold. Now I must admit something, I didn't master this all alone... After three years of testing and trials I made friends with a Navy SEAL. As you may know, Navy Seals usually keeps their secrets within their community, sharing only with colleagues... But this guy took a liking upon me because he believed in what I was doing, and more importantly... He felt it was still his duty to share any secrets that could protect American lives... Anyways, after we few days of getting to know each other, he asked if he would look at my plan... I was confident about what my Emergency Preparedness And Survival Guide had evolved into so we agreed to meet the next Sunday afternoon for me share my plan with him... Less than 10 minutes into my presentation, he had unconvinced look on his face... He slowly shook his head and told me that I was missing critical defensive and strategic ideas that's the foundation of any urban survival plan... He explained what he learned in SEAL training that allowed him to successfully stay in place behind enemy lines for an extended time to successfully complete their mission. I was writing as fast as he was talking... Even thought I've done many research, read books, interviewed many experts... He quite honestly dissected an entire "In Place" survival plan at a level of explanation and analysis I'd never seen before... After our time together, he agreed to help me revamp my Survival Plan into what it is today.... I made massive improvements AND kept guiding principles for what I believe a Survival Course MUST include.... The system I composed together with the help of my SEAL friend help include... Emergency Preparedness And Survival Guide will show you how to... Turning your home into a shield: Secrets to Keeping the peace and comfort inside, and the zombies out... Live like a Ghost: How live like you don't exist so the looters and criminals don't track you down and steal your stockpile... How to Instantly Know if Your in Danger - This lesson alone will save you and your family from ever having to face threatening situations... Communication: You'll be able to know what's going on outside your fortress, and communicate with other patriots like you so you can work together through out the entire ordeal... Developing a survival team - this is not based on who you like it is based on what you will need... Survival Mindset - Your ability to control your mind is 80% of the determining factor if you and your family survive or perish... And what better survival mindset training than that of the Navy Seals? Advanced Survival Skills - Turn toilet water into clean drinking water, Fight like a warrior, hunt like an Indian...Click the link at the the top to see how Emergency Preparedness And Survival Guide can save you and your family's lives.

Watch more Hurricanes & Storms videos: http://www.howcast.com/videos/471526-How-to-Survive-a-Hurricane Don't wait until a storm is heading your way! Survive a hurricane with these safety precautions. Step 1: Plan ahead Plan ahead. Know the location of local shelters and how you'll evacuate if you don't have a car. If you have family members with special medical needs, ask local officials if there's a registry so they get help in the event of power outages. Pick a place for family members to meet in case you become separated, and designate an out-of-town friend as the person everyone calls to report that they're safe. Get flood insurance if you don't already have it. Tip Make sure you know how to shut off electricity, gas, and water in case you're instructed to do so. Step 2: Be prepared Have the following supplies on hand at the start of hurricane season: a 3-day supply of water that provides 1 gallon per person per day; a 3-day supply of non-perishable food that doesn't require cooking; a flashlight and extra batteries; a battery-powered radio that can receive broadcasts from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration; a first-aid kit; and a 7-day supply of medications. Tip The Atlantic and Central Pacific hurricane season runs from June 1 to November 30; the Eastern Pacific is from May 15 through November. Step 3: Get ready If a hurricane warning is issued -- meaning one is expected in the next 36 hours -- bring in anything that can be tossed around by the wind; close and board up all windows and doors with 5/8" marine plywood, unless you have hurricane shutters; clear rain gutters and downspouts; trim trees and shrubs; put your refrigerator and freezer on the coldest setting; and fill your car's gas tank in case you're ordered to evacuate. Step 4: Go to a safe place If you live on the first or 2nd floor of a high rise, make plans to take refuge with neighbors between floors 3 and 10 when the storm begins. Residents who live above the 10th floor should evacuate, as should mobile home dwellers and anyone living on a floodplain, near a river, or on an inland waterway. Step 5: Do last-minute preparations Shortly before the storm is expected to start, fill your bathtub with water so you have an extra supply on hand. Unplug small appliances and sensitive electronics, and turn off propane tanks. Step 6: Ride out the storm When the storm starts, stay away from windows and glass doors and avoid using the phone. Go to your home's lowest level and stay in an interior room, closet, or hallway. Have a mattress or pillow to protect your head. Monitor weather conditions on your radio and don't leave your safe place until local officials say it's okay to do so. Step 7: Avoid post-storm dangers If you lose electricity, keep circuit breakers turned off until power is restored, then check for frayed wires. If you see any, call the power company. Leave the house immediately if you smell gas. If you're returning home, don't enter your house if floodwaters remain around the building; you see loose power lines or structural damage; or you smell a gas leak. If you have any safety concerns at all, stay elsewhere until your home is checked by a building inspector or structural engineer. Did You Know? 2/3 of the hurricanes that hit land in the United States between 1981 and 2011 struck the Gulf Coast. The other third hit the Atlantic Coast.

How to prepare to survive a hurricane tips, these are my recommendations, and I hope that they keep you and your family safe. This is my advanced planning for a hurricane or typhoon. Formulate a pre-hurricane plan before a disaster preparedness emergency management notification alert of a tropical storm warning or watch happens. This is a how-to informal, short description of how to accomplish Tempest gale storm preparedness from a preppers perspective, this is greatly simplified from the overall discussion of the topic, and meant for non-experts to help them become a severe tropical cyclone survivalist. Being in a state of readiness for super-hurricanes, hurricanes, tropical depression ,Monsoon, A squall, Gale force winds, storms, violent weather, an act of God, fierce winds, tropical storms with high powered circular winds, A Tropical cyclone in the Caribbean, category hurricane from the Atlantic and or gulf coast, violent windstorm, flooding, and etc. Hurricane mitigation and Cyclone mitigation preparations for basic Prepping for severe weather natural disasters and hazards can help you survive, endure, and avoid common pitfalls and problems. Get to know your local emergency management agency's recommendations if you live near a coastal area, study up on FEMA the Federal emergency management agency's recommendations for a tropical Hurricane Storm. Having a flood insurance policy, before disaster strikes. Stockpile emergency supplies, as your budget allows. Having communications such as a NOAA enabled radio, that is battery powered, solar powered, and crank powered is my recommendation, if your budget allows.Fill your car's gas tank at least a minimum of a day before the storm, in case you ordered to evacuate. If you live on the first or second floor of a high-rise. Before the storm begins, try to make arrangements to stay with your neighbors who live on the third floor and above during the hurricane. If you live in the 8th or above floors try and stay with neighbors who live below you, or seek shelter somewhere else. Generally, I recommend to evacuate if you live near a floodplain, near a river, or an inlet waterway. If you live on a Boat, Secure Your Boat, and Evacuate inland. If you live in a mobile home, I recommend seeking a more sturdy shelter to ride the storm out. If you should lose electricity keep all circuit breakers off until the power is restored. If you should witness any downed power lines be sure to call the power company from a mobile phone to report the damage. If you should smell gas in your home leave immediately, and report this from a mobile device from a safe distance. When the storm starts stay away from all doors and windows, try and stay in an interior room of your house, using a pillow or mattress to protect your head and body. Do not leave the safe place in your home, until you're positive that the storm has passed, not just the eye of a hurricane or until local officials say it's OK to do so.Be prepared ,put together a family emergency plan and emergency kit well in advance of any storm. Get a copy of The Family Disaster Plan. Discuss it with your family members, so that everyone knows what to do when the time comes. These free resources are available from the National Weather Service or the American Red Cross websites.Hurricane watches give 36 hours to prepare, and hurricane warnings give 24 hours to prepare. Watch or listen to hurricane central weather channel and hurricane central NOAA to stay up to date on the lates hurricane tracker from NOAA, or hurricane tracker weather channel to best keep your family safe and get your tropical update to monitor tropical storms and hurricanes and get storm safety and preparedness tips from them and my youtube video here on how to prepare for a hurricane. In this joyful, heartfelt talk featuring demos of her wonderfully wacky creations, Simone Giertz shares her craft: making useless robots. Her inventions -- designed to chop vegetables, cut hair, apply lipstick and more -- rarely (if ever) succeed, and that's the point. "The true beauty of making useless things [is] this acknowledgment that you don't always know what the best answer is," Giertz says. "It turns off that voice in your head that tells you that you know exactly how the world works. Maybe a toothbrush helmet isn't the answer, but at least you're asking the question."
