Smoking and HRT
Hey, I look horrible in this but it is real life and I have been very stressed lately and it clearly shows :) I am quitting smoking in the hopes of improving my HRT results so ima do a timelapse for 6 months or a year uploading an update of progress monthly. Currently 3 years 5 months into HRT so it'll be interesting to see what happens without smoking during it from now on. It's expensive, it makes your hair and clothes reek, and, honestly, it's just so 90s. But the biggest reason to butt out? Obviously, your health. You already know that smoking kills, but you may not realize just how dramatically quitting smoking can improve how you feel. You'll go through physical withdrawal. Time to rip off the band-aid: Quitting smoking can really suck in the beginning. People may not realize how addictive nicotine is until they stop using it. If you're quitting smoking cold turkey, it may be a tough time, at least in the beginning. Physical symptoms of withdrawal include headaches (that are suspected to be a result of stress) , dizziness (from a drop in blood pressure and heart rate) , fatigue, hunger, nausea, and coughing. You may also have an increased appetite and have trouble sleeping. All of these symptoms subside over time, usually sometime between a few weeks to nine months, depending on how much and how long you've been smoking. You'll go through psychological withdrawal, too. you may also face some psychological withdrawal symptoms. Mood swings, depression, confusion, a shortened attention span, jitters, irritability, and powerful cravings – both for cigarettes and for food – can be expected. Just remember: All of this is temporary! For most smokers, psychological withdrawal symptoms start to fade after about two weeks, and they'll likely be completely gone in nine months. Your blood circulation improves. Get this: Just two hours after you quit smoking, your blood circulation improves drastically. Nicotine raises your heart rate and blood pressure, and within just hours of quitting (sometimes just 30 minutes) , your heart rate and blood pressure lower to a normal, healthy rate. Your stroke risk drops dramatically. Smoking increases your risk of suffering a stroke by narrowing your blood vessels, which hinders your blood circulation to your brain. Though it's a gradual improvement, know that within 18 months to 15 years after you quit smoking (depending on how much, how often, and how long you smoked) , your stroke risk drops back down to that of a non-smoker. It's also important to note that if you're on hormonal birth control, you should not smoke under any circumstances as these combined behaviors present a potentially deadly stroke risk. You'll breathe a lot better. The good news: Your lungs will start improving in as little as a few weeks to a few months after you quit smoking. Norman Edelman, the chief medical officer of the American Lung Association, explained that within this period, "The little hair-like projections in the airways that we call cilia – which are paralyzed by smoke – begin to work again. Breathing will get better. Exercise capacity will get better." Food tastes better. Since your sense of smell improves when you quick smoking, this directly connects to your sense of taste, which can dramatically improve within days. Studies show that smokers' sense of taste is diminished and they have limited taste bud regeneration, especially with bitter flavors. Even though we are consuming iodized salt, still thyroid problems are prevalent. What is the cause for the increase in these problems? Is it stress-related like diabetes or hypertension? Can we overcome these conditions with hatha yoga, or kriya, or being in a consecrated space like Isha Yoga Center? What are the things we can do to come out of it? Sadhguru: I think a whole lot of people have come out of it with hatha yoga practice, no question about it. Being in a consecrated place definitely adds to it. But, this pretty widespread manifestation of thyroid imbalance. See, we must understand this. What you’re calling as thyroid - in yoga, we don’t look at the glands like that but medically, what you’re calling as thyroid is that secretion within you, which is trying to calibrate your system on a daily basis. It’s just calibrating how much digestion should happen, how much energy should be produced, how much fat should be produced, how much muscle should be built, everything, it’s trying to calibrate your physical structure. Your physical structure is very closely related to your psychological structure. Today, there is substantial evidence to show you that if you sit here and think of the mountain, your glandular function will happen in a certain way, if you think about a tiger, it’ll happen another way, you think about a ocean, it’ll happen another way, you think of a man or a woman, it’ll happen another way. Just a thought – nothing, no contact with mountain, no contact with tiger, no contact with man, woman or ocean – just a thought will fluctuate the glandular function. I’m saying that is how fine the system is that it is trying to calibrate everything to keep you in a good place. The problem with you is you need a bullock cart because you are the missing link (Laughs). You need a bullock cart but they gave you a fine spaceship, tch. Every little thing will do a world of things. Simply if you touch it, it’ll go boom, waves of stuff happening in the system. Simply if you look like this (Gestures) and make one conclusion about the tree, this (Referring to oneself) will go into many varieties of chemical and other kinds of variations. Glandular functions will change. Wherever you may be, whether you’re in Mumbai, or New York, or London, wherever – just look at the situation in which you’re walking. Maybe socially, you’ve gotten used to those things. But look at the kind of atmosphere you’re walking in, the number of things that are happening. None of them are conducive for this life (Referring to oneself). You might have gotten adjusted to it, maybe now you can’t live out of those cities, that’s another matter but the life that you are, is not seeking that kind of atmosphere. So the number of variations that are happening within you are not in your favor. Glandular dysfunction is just one manifestation. A very highly calibrated function of glandular function, one thing is the thyroid. It’s easily noticeable, the first thing, your physiological and psychological parameters get thrown off a bit, simply because disturbance. And another dimension is what’s the disturbance that’s happening from within you – your own psychological patterns. Another dimension of disturbance is what kind of food is getting into you. Perhaps you can't party as hard as you once did, and the hangovers are getting worse. Maybe you've developed a beer belly. Possibly, there's a deeper issue at play, and you don't want your drinking to get out of hand before it's a problem—unless it already is and you just don't realize it. Whatever your circumstances are, you're here, and you're ready to kick the sauce. Let's break down what happens to your body once you quit drinking. 1. It may get worse before it gets better: If you are a heavy drinker, you may not be out of the woods after 48 hours. Between 48-72 hours is generally when the onset of 'delirium tremens' occurs for some. Delirium tremens is sudden confusion that may be paired with hallucinations, shaking, irregular heart rate, and an increase in body temperature, so high that it can sometimes lead to seizures. If you are a heavy drinker, it is important to detox from alcohol under the supervision of a medical professional, as the withdrawal from quitting cold turkey can lead to death. 2. Physical symptoms will subside: While hangover and withdrawal symptoms can be uncomfortable, and at times dangerous, the good news is, that after peaking at around 72 hours after the last drink, the last of these symptoms will generally start to subside. At this stage, your body begins to create a new equilibrium, that does not include alcohol and its effects. 3. You'll sleep better: It may take a week or two, but after you quit drinking you'll ultimately sleep better. According to research, drinking increases brain wave patterns, that usually happen when you're awake. In normal deep sleep, the brain activity is in delta waves. Consuming alcohol causes brain activity during sleep to happen in alpha waves. Alpha waves are generally only seen in brain activity when we're awake, but resting. We all know that resting on the couch isn't the same thing, as getting a good night's sleep, so it's no wonder that people who drink regularly often feel tired and fatigued during the day. 4. You'll lose weight: If you stop drinking and change nothing else about your diet, or level of activity, you're likely to lose weight. It's partially the simple concept of calorie counting—alcohol, especially beer, contains a lot of calories. A single IPA may have as many as 200 calories, and a margarita could have roughly 300. If you suddenly drop hundreds of calories a day, the pounds will drop off over time. Plus, you'll overeat less. Research shows a link between alcohol consumption and heightened senses. Being intoxicated sends the hypothalamus in the brain into high gear, which makes the body more sensitive to food smells. That, combined with alcohol's famous ability to remove inhibitions, leads to extra eating. 5. Your skin will look better: Alcohol is a diuretic, meaning it causes water to exit the body. Not so much "cause" as "force." In short, it's severely dehydrating. It decreases the production of a hormone that helps the body absorb and hold water. This is why water is needed during a hangover. Over time, less water in the body leads to noticeable effects, such as parched and dry-looking skin, rosy red cheeks, dandruff, and eczema. I'm not here to advocate that anyone smoke or not smoke pot, and my only goal here is to give the objective facts as I see them. Also keep in mind that we're specifically discussing bodybuilding and marjiuana here and nothing else. Whatever other health effects it may or may not have are beyond the scope of this post. The main areas of concern when it comes to weed and bodybuilding revolve around levels of important hormones such as testosterone, growth hormone and estrogen. However, the current research that is available (references below) simply does not show any significant, long-lasting effects as a result of marijuana consumption. Testosterone: All we see here are short term decreases that return to baseline fairly quickly, and even when test levels do drop, they still stay within the normal range. Heavy ongoing use may be a different issue, but moderate use should not be an issue in this area. Growth Hormone: Decreases only occur when very large doses of pure THC are given. One study actually showed an increase in growth hormone levels as a result of smoking two joints. Estrogen: The results here are mixed, with some studies showing negative effects and others showing no effect. However, very large doses were used in the studies indicating that only heavy, frequent use would likely be a problem if at all. From a direct physical standpoint, I currently don't see any evidence to indicate that moderate marjiuana consumption would have any direct negative effect on your ability to build muscle or lose fat. Heavy frequent use may be another issue, but even then the research is inconclusive. The only situation where marijuana and bodybuilding would overlap is if it causes behavioural changes in you that then carry over to your fitness goals, such as over-eating or skipping workouts. In that case, obviously there would be consequences. However, if all else remains equal (training, nutrition, supplementation etc.), weed and bodybuilding don't seem to be connected in any measurable way from a pure physical standpoint. I’m Cristen, and today we’re going to talk about the human voice. First off, let’s acknowledge that everyone is a special and unique butterknife, and there’s no rule about how men and women’s voices should sound. But on average, adult men’s voices have what’s known as a lower “fundamental frequency” than adult women’s voices. The fundamental frequency is simply the scientific term for how high or low a person’s natural speaking voice is. Sound frequency is measured in hertz, which means how many times something happens in one second. So a sound wave that vibrates 100 times per second produces a tone of 100 hertz. The more cycles per second, the higher the pitch. Babies usually cry at a frequency of around 500 hertz. Children have speaking frequencies in the range of 250 to 400 hertz. By the time of adulthood, however, men have an average fundamental frequency of about 125 hertz, and women about 200 hertz. What happened here? Why the big difference? To understand why men’s voices end up lower than women’s voices, we need to look at how the body produces sound. So let’s take a magical journey to the inside of your neck! Leading from your lungs to the cavity behind your mouth and nose is a pipeline called the trachea. You use it to breathe. At the top of the trachea is a hollow organ called the larynx, or in common parlance, “the voice box.” The larynx is also what allows us to make sound for talking or singing. To do this, you use your lungs to push a column of air through the larynx while using your laryngeal muscles to press together a pair of membranes called the vocal folds, or more commonly, your vocal cords. When you close the vocal folds like this, the air you push out through them makes them vibrate, and this vibration leads to sound. There are several factors that can all have some effect on the fundamental frequency of a person’s voice, like the size of the larynx and differential development of facial bones and cavities in the head, but the most important factor to talk about is the length of the vocal folds. If you pluck a string, the length of the string affects the frequency of the note that plays. Think about a guitar. When you press a string down to a higher fret on a guitar, you shorten the length of the part of the string that vibrates when you pluck it, and this produces a higher note. The same thing happens inside your larynx! The longer the vocal fold, the lower the note. During puberty, both boys and girls experience growth of the vocal folds, leading to lower voices. But the male hormone testosterone, which is released by the testicles during puberty, typically causes boys’ vocal folds to grow longer and thicker than girls’. On average, adult women have vocal folds somewhere around 10 millimeters long, while adult men have focal folds in the neighborhood of 16 millimeters. Consequently, women are up there on the upper frets soloing into oblivion like a high school kid who just learned to play “Eruption” by Van Halen, and men are letting the open strings ring like the intro to “Nothing Else Matters” by Metallica. This is because helium is less dense than air. This affects your entire body - from head to your two, inside and out. Remember, your blood contains oxygen, youthful hormones and nutrients to feed all of your cells. Your Eyes Dart Back and Forth For starters, there are up to five stages of sleep, and each serves a specific purpose in keeping your brain and body in good shape. It's also good to point out that each stage is deeper than the former and you'll start all over again after passing through all five. For the most part, REM (rapid eye movement) is the last and most active phase — it typically starts 60 to 90 minutes after you fall asleep and you're likely to spend up to 20% of your time sleeping in this phase. Now, during REM sleep, your eyes dart quickly back and forth, but you won't even have an idea of what's going on because your mind is totally immersed in what Morpheus has in store for you. 2.
