Laurel Warner Middle- High School Level Vocabulary Lesson November, 2013 I only did a few new vocabulary words, but it still seemed to take up too much time for a 5 minute demo! This lesson would usually take a whole class period to introduce and reinforce the new vocabulary. If I was speaking too fast, I apologize. The speed is much easier to control when there are students in the classroom responding to the lesson!

We’ve put a twist on reading comprehension practice by incorporating a foldable craft.....the perfect brain break after the hard work is done! The students will be required to read the informational text article entitled “The History Behind Thanksgiving”. The reading is followed by a comprehension assessment comprised of 8 multiple choice questions that reflect the Common Core Standards, and a short response question that requires text based evidence. The multiple choice answers are recorded on the Answer Sheet provided and the short response is recorded on our Pilgrim or Native American Craftivity/Foldable template. Next?....the real fun begins!…Students will color, cut and fold their way to adorable Thanksgiving Pilgrims or Native Americans that can be displayed around your classroom or used for a Thanksgiving bulletin board. All paragraphs are numbered for questions that require the student to "look back" and analyze a particular aspect of the text. This passage is perfect for close reading as all paragraphs are numbered for questions that require the students to reread and analyze a particular aspect of the text. INCLUDED IN THIS PRODUCT: An Informational Text Passage Common Core aligned multiple choice questions Common Core aligned short response question Student Answer Sheet Craftivity/Foldable (for short response) Teacher Answer Key Craftivity/Foldable Directions (easy as could be!... and no-prep required) Sign entitled "Thanksgiving- Then & Now” (for classroom/bulletin board display) With this product your kiddos will gain invaluable experience with Common Core reading/questioning AND will be rewarded by designing their very own Pilgrim or Native American craft. This is the tail end of the planning process. It's when I've collected all my material and sorted through it. I've decided who is reading what, and which books I'll read aloud. All that's left to do is put it in my weekly lesson plans. This does take time up front, but it's worth it in the end. You can find the complete list of materials we used for this unit, including pictures, links and descriptions of each book or kit, at my website: https://www.pepperandpine.com/?p=2095 Here's the process I go through when I put together a unit: First I decide what we are going to study. I use the Waldorf curriculum from Live-Education as our default curriculum, so if I'm at a loss, I can always refer back to it as inspiration. You can choose a topic you are interested in, or you can expand on something in your current curriculum and turn it into a unit. Next, I figure out what materials I already have that I can use for the unit. I check our personal library, our games, or other materials. Occasionally, I check the local library, but often, I find it easier to own our own material. After I figure out what we have, I figure out what we want. I love Rainbow Resource and Acorn Naturalists. They have some of the most inspiring material available. I fill a cart or wishlist with everything I want, then I whittle it down. Once I receive all my material, I sit down with it and a pad of full sticky-back Post-its and a pencil and begin the preliminary lesson planning. I look through all the materials and figure out which books I'm going to read to the kids, which books they are going to read to themselves independently and when we are going to do projects. I figure out which supplements or materials I'll need and make a mental note to collect or buy them. I also check to see if there are any field trips or other activities or classes that might enhance the unit. I also figure out how long the unit is going to take. Either I set a number of weeks and work the material into that set amount of time, or I decide how many weeks I think the material will take to cover. Finally, I take all that planning and transcribe into my weekly lesson plan. I use an Excel spreadsheet for my lesson planning. I've used the same format for many years, and while it makes sense to me, I think there might be other formats that work as well or better. I usually write up and print out my weekly lesson plans the Sunday before the week begins, so that if there are changes that need to be made or if we don't get to something, I can easily roll it over to the following week, rather than change all the subsequent weeks. You can also find the complete list of materials used for the geology unit, including pictures and links, as a FREE download at Teachers Pay Teachers: https://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/List-of-Geology-Books-Charlotte-Mason-Living-Books-2726894 Share pics of your projects with me! https://twitter.com/PepperandPine https://www.instagram.com/pepperandpine/ https://www.facebook.com/pepperandpine https://www.pepperandpine.com

This Video: November 14, 2014 | Search Videos by Title/Date. THIS VIDEOS TAB's + LESSON PLAN available on: Sunday November 16, 2014 at: http://www.andrewwasson.com/ Andrew Wasson of Creative Guitar Studio answers a viewers question... Q: I've been testing out scale sequencing when I make up melodies. But, I only seem to keep doing the same types of things over & over. I know there are quite a few ways that scale sequences could be used. So, could you make a lesson covering some things that you like to do when it comes to applying scale sequencing concepts? Thanks! Sebastian - Summerdale, Pennsylvania USA A: Scale sequencing is an excellent composing concept to apply when building any melody, and it can be applied into practically any style of music. Unfortunately, scale sequencing is far too often taught only as an exercise concept for building left & right hand technical skills. When I teach this idea, I'm also guilty of introducing it as an approach to technically develop scales. But, I will quickly get my students to practice this idea on everything from 'phrases,' to licks and different types of riffs. In the lesson, I introduce the basic concept of sequencing, and I run through; Ascending & Descending Phrases, I also discuss Target Tone Sequences, as well as, a unique approach of Sequencing Horizontally using the Pentatonic Scale.
