Lose Weight Before Joint Replacement Surgery!? Why is it important? What happens if you can’t lose weight before surgery? This is a common scenario for those preparing for knee replacement surgery or hip replacement surgery. This is especially true for patients in the age group of 65 or younger. In the younger demographic, surgeons want to maximize the longevity of the knee replacement. A decent weight range for a joint replacement is a BMI of less than 40. If you’ve got a lower BMI, your knee or hip implant will last longer. If you have a BMI above 40 it more than doubles your risk of postoperative infection. About 1-2% of all patients develop an infection after surgery. Infections will always require more surgery. In someone who has a BMI of over 40, the infection rate goes from 1 in 50 to 1 in 25. During the first week, you may find it easy to lose weight by simply switching to a healthier diet. But as your metabolism adjusts, you won’t burn as many calories as you used to. So losing additional weight will become harder. Making matters worse, as the fat melts away, you’ll start to experience an increase in appetite. After a meal, fat cells release a hormone called leptin into the bloodstream. This surge in leptin levels signals to your brain you’re full and should stop eating. But with less overall fat, people who lose weight show a measurable dip in leptin. Brain scans of obese patients who had lost 10% of their body weight revealed that less leptin leads to increased activity in regions of the brain that control our desire to eat. The result isn’t just an increased appetite but an even stronger urge to eat fatty, high-calorie foods, because your brain is trying to restore the body’s leptin levels to normal. However, fighting that early impulse to gorge on pizza and donuts is worth it in the long run. Besides the decreased risk of heart disease, hypertension, high cholesterol and type 2 diabetes, scientists studying overweight people discovered that losing just one pound of body weight reduces four pounds of pressure on knee joints. Losing excess weight also reduces strain on the blood vessels, increases blood flow to the brain, and boosts overall brain function. Several studies have shown that people who underwent weight-loss surgery saw an improvement in memory, concentration, and problem-solving skills in as soon as three months. Plus, brain scans indicate that people who lost weight and kept it off for nine months reacted differently when shown images of high-calorie foods than before they lost the weight. The brain regions that process reward, motivation, and taste didn’t react as strongly, whereas the areas that promote overall self-control had a boost in activity. So fighting those cravings early on might make them easier to control later. Turns out — like anything else — losing weight can get easier with practice.

James Langan, a 60-year-old retired maintenance supervisor, was looking forward to having his weight loss surgery performed by Dr. Seun Sowemimo. He initially attended the doctor's weight loss surgery Informational Seminar to learn more about the different surgical procedures available and ask questions about the process. James attended the seminar with his sister-in-law, Joanne, head nurse in the Surgery department of an orthopedic group, whom he refers to as the 'family doctor'. "Even she was impressed with Dr. Seun and agreed with his assessment that the gastric sleeve procedure was the way to go in my situation," James recalls. An unexpected roadblock Prior to surgery, the Sayreville resident underwent routine testing to ensure he was a suitable candidate for the sleeve procedure. But during a colonoscopy, a mass on right side of James' colon was discovered. James says Dr. Seun took immediate control of the serious diagnosis and simply told him "we would resolve this issue first and then get back to the weight loss surgery." Dr. Seun recommended James get a second opinion from another surgeon before even discussing what action to take. "That really earned my confidence," James says. James did so and the second surgeon confirmed Dr. Seun's diagnosis─stage one colon cancer. Fortunately, the cancer was in the early stages and had not penetrated any muscle. One week later, Dr. Seun laparoscopically removed all of the cancerous tumor in the colon at CentraState Medical Center. Moving forward "The incisions from my minimally invasive surgery were tiny—maybe two inches long. I previously had a knee replacement and surgery to remove an aneurism. But this time, I didn't have to deal with weeks and weeks of recovery from general surgery." James was only on pain medication for a day and a half after his colon surgery and says his scars are almost completely gone today. One month later, cancer free, James was finally ready to move forward with his bariatric sleeve surgery, which was performed without any complications. Today, James has lost 76 pounds in less than three months and has alleviated the need for several medications for previous health conditions related to his obesity; He no longer needs any medication for high blood pressure. He found Dr. Seun's calm and patient demeanor along with the non-stop support of Julie Parrott, RD, the Prime Surgicare nutritionist, pivotal to his rapid weight loss. To prepare him for surgery, James underwent a liquid protein diet to eliminate meals and caloric intake prior to surgery and prepare him for the liquid diet he would consume for a few weeks after surgery. "This helped tremendously during my first week of recovery," said James. James laughs and says that, unfortunately, he deems himself an expert in the world of surgery, after undergoing three major procedures in additional to his bariatric surgery. "Dr. Seun is not a hit-and-run doctor. He is always there to answer your questions, very down to earth, and speaks to you on your level. I recommend him 100% to anyone who may be facing surgery.

So we're going to start with a push up. There's different options that we have. We can use a chair, a bench. First we're going to start with the chair. With your legs straight, bring in the body weight down to the chair--the chest down to the chair, or you can also just come to the knees. Push that chair away, hands wide, chest down, head stays up, aligned with the spine. We're just going to push up. We're going to do ten of those, three sets. Okay the next exercise is...we'll start with a crunch. Go ahead and sit down on the ground, knees up high, heels flat on the floor. You can have hands across your chest or behind your head. Now with a crunch you want to come up, chin up to the sky, make sure those shoulder blades come off the ground, squeezing your abdomen. Exhale as you come up and squeeze. Inhale as you let go. (Music plays) If you're ready, come up to a full sit up. Bring it up, whole body up, all the way forward. Come all the way down, shoulder blades down, all the way up, and back down. Again, you'll go for 10 reps, three times. The next exercise we have dips. You can find a bench, chair, anything you have around the house. Keep your feet close to you for support. You're going to go ahead and bend those elbows, making sure they're not coming out, trying to keep them pointed back the entire exercise. You go down to a 90 degree angle and press up. Your body weight is your resistance. If needed, use that foot to help get you back up. Again, go for ten to twelve reps, for three times. Those are our body weight exercises. This video is the start of my weight loss journey after my tummy tuck and knee surgery. When I went into my tummy tuck surgery (May 10th) I weighed about 161 and about the same when I went into knee surgery (Aug 22nd). Since I have been unable to work out and haven't been watching what I eat following knee surgery I have gained weight. So now its time to get back in the gym and get the weight off. Exercise After Weight Loss Surgery - Lower Body Exercises | Blossom Bariatrics | Las Vegas Welcome to Blossom Bodies. Today we have two really amazing guest trainers with us, Kristen and Tiff from Riot Conditioning. They're here to show you some really great tips. Okay, today we're going to talk to you about some lower body movements to start with. We're going to work these major muscle groups. It's really important to start with the major muscle groups because those are key to strengthening your joints. So many of you might have issues with your knees or your hips or your ankles. We start with these movements and do them slow and controlled to make sure that you implement them correctly and that you do the right form to strengthen your quads, your hamstrings, and your glutes. We'll start with a lunge. So, today we're just going to use this bench, but you could use a chair. So you're going to hold on to the chair or this bench and just do the lunge with the knee coming all the way down to the ground, stepping up. We're going to have you do ten on one side and then you'll switch and do ten on the other side. Great, the next exercise will be just a squat. Now you can take a chair right behind you. We'll use this bench again and you're going to make sure your feet are shoulder width apart and you're going to go ahead and sit down in that chair and come up. Now really focus on the muscle that your working right now, which would be my quadriceps and my glute muscles. Make sure you squeeze those and your out of your knees. You're not using your knees. She's also keeping her chest up and not bending over, but sitting back. Again, we'll go for ten reps and you can do that three times. Great, and our last exercise is.. Calf raises. .Calf raises. We can do both feet at the same time, or single legged calf raise. So we're going to squeeze at the top, slowly release it, and we're going to do that for 10 reps, three times. Okay, so those are three lower body exercises you can implement to really start to strengthen those major muscle groups. It's really important to really secure those joints. Gail Conwell, an elementary school teacher, was having constant knee pain and was told she needed to have both knees replaced.
