A good lathe stand is heavy, doesn't get in your way and has storage for all the stuff you use at the lathe. I haven't included storage for the lathe cutting tools since I would rather have those up higher. I did put a 45 degree on the top edge of the panel on the front if I change my mind and want to hang a rack on the front. I haven't included plans because the construction is fairly straightforward and you are going to want to adjust the height of the stand for your own height. The lathe spindle should be at about the same height as your elbow.

My dad and I bought a metal working lathe. It weighs about 180kg and needed a good stand that could handle the weight and the vibration from the machine. The one we could have bought was about 400€ more...and made from sheet metal. No option for me, so I built this cabinet stand instead. Solid beech hardwood, birch plywood panels, and everything joined with mortise and tenon joints. There's no metal fastener in the basic structure. The cabinet itself now also weighs about 100kg, but that's good for the application. This stand could also be used as a regular workbench with lots of storage. I think I build another one someday for my workshop. Would you be interested in plans? Let me know. Now the lathe is a Optimum brand. We haven't used it very much yet, so keep that in mind if you ask questions about it. I can't give a review on it and I also don't want to as this is not what my channel is about. And because I know it's a hot topic and I don't want to answer the same question over and over again. The lathe was about 3200€ (without tools or accessories) Interested in a Pantorouter: How it works and where to get one: http://www.hybridpantorouter.jp/ For the US: http://hybridpantorouter.com also because it has been asked very often, the link to the diamond saw blade I used (it's expensive): http://de.feldershop.com/Saegen/Kreissaegeblaetter/Das-Diamant-Universalsaegeblatt-der-Extraklasse.html Enjoy the video!

This is how I built a custom lathe stand out of some spruce beams. I originally made some plans in sketchup, so that way I was able to cut the exact angles for the legs as shown in the plans. The joints did not end up as perfect as I wanted them to be, but having in mind that this was my first attempt in this size of a joinery-project, I am pretty confident with the result. 00:03 I skipped the bit about cutting the pieces or making the loose tenons instead starting with routering a channel for the side panels. 01:00 Dry fitting the side panels. 01:30 Gluing the side panels. 02:19 I am going to secure the side panels to a base piece using carriage screws which I am cutting out. 02:51 Pocket screwing the base, which will be strengthen with a panel glued on top. 03:34 Attaching the bottom section to side panels. 04:23 Cutting sheet material for base and installing. 05:02 Making top section – back angle of stand is 10 degrees. 05:18 I decided to use my V-nail gun to attach the top pieces together. I didn’t have a piece long enough so I also joined these together - trying to use all the scrap from around the workshop. 05:56 Fitting top to side panels. 06:10 I didn’t plane any timber down instead selecting the straightest pieces I could fine and orienting them to they would compensate for any slight warping. 06:30 Top sheet material. 07:01 Routering groove for back panel to slot into. 07:53 Cannibalising the workshop for material. 08:18 The glorious moment it all came together. 08:37 CONCLUSION 08:85 T-Shirts 09:20 But which one? 09:22 Disclaimer from the thumber. DIY, Homemade Vertical wood lathe part 2 - i had a base that was almost scraped from a machine we parted out and it looks like it will be a perfect fit my vertical lathe. i had to rill and tap a few holes and plasma cut a large hole to allow the gearbox to poke through the base and engage my ring gear on the slewing bearing. Are you planning on building a homemade lathe? I have built a few but they were quite technical. i thought it would be interesting to build a lathe where the turning axis is oriented in the vertical plane. the idea initially was suggested by a member of the homemade lathe facebook group (link below). the vertical lathe has been around since the industrial revolution and in fact we have one in our machine shop. however i have never seen one built for wood turning.... until now. i have no idea if this is going to work but since i had the parts already in my shop, i decided to go ahead and build one! the parts are simple: 1- slewing bearing - eBay for 125.00 1- Cadillac ring gear - eBay for 15.00 1- Spur Gear - McMaster Carr for 30.00 1- 1:1 gearbox - eBay for 100.00 4- heavy duty swivel feet - FREE! laying around the shop 1- Heavy duty steel base - FREE! SAVED FROM THE SCRAP PILE obviously the little lathe will be for woodturning and wood turning only. i would not attempt to turn anything other than wood on this "little" lathe. #homemadelathe #lathe #woodlathe #woodturning #verticallathe if you are interested in homemade lathes, please visit our facebook group https://www.facebook.com/groups/homemadelathe/

Industrial Styled workshop Drawers/ Lathe Cabinet. Made from 75 x 75 mm Steel for the 4 legs, 50 x 50 for the rest of the box structure. I have a heap of 19mm reclaimed plywood so I used that for the top, sides and drawer cases. The Drawer front is reclaimed Pine shelving. I made the drawer bases from old metal signage as I have so many sheets I have to use it some how, rather than buy more ply. (Ply, would be my first preference however). As the Ply was all painted with an industrial finish (Grey) I paint stripped and sanded the paint off, then stained in Walnut. Clear Wipe on Poly and Bee's Wax is used to finish. I made the Drawer runners also to cut down on costs though I would much prefer to use the sliding drawers runners. If this was being built for a customer I would use the roller bearing sliders for the drawers. The Drawer Handles are made from ReBar and Angle. No welding. I machined a slight shoulder on the Rebar ends so once installed that cannot slide out. I love it..........I love it. Oh, it is heavy as all hell too. See how I made a simple miter saw station! Sponsored Promo Code: “make” for $50 off a premium mattress: http://www.casper.com/make Subscribe to my channel: http://bit.ly/1k8msFr Second Channel: http://bit.ly/iltms-2 MORE PROJECTS, POSTS AND EVENTS http://www.iliketomakestuff.com In my old shop, I never really had room for a proper miter station. I dealt with it but also ways to move things out of the way to cut an 8' piece of material and come up with creative (and some times dangerous) stop block situations. In the new shop, I have plenty of space, so it was time to make a dedicated place to use the miter saw. I didn't want to go overboard with storage or complexity and wanted it to still be relatively compact. I also had 2 days to build it in between projects, so it had to be simple. The only real requirements for me were that it had to be cheap, easy, fast and it needed a sliding stop block system. I think I hit all of those points while still getting a solid work surface that has PLENTY of space for future improvement in the form of storage. There is space above and below to add storage and the simply dust collection ports help keep the whole area clean. I own an old Reliant DD-70 Midi Wood Lathe and I purchased it new, back in 1993. It hasn't been used in many years and just sat in storage, collecting dust. With a renewed interest in wood turning, I dug it out, cleaned it up, but had no place to put it where I could operate it. This old wood lathe is very light (made in Taiwan) and has to be bolted down to something solid to reduce vibration. The solution was to design and fabricate a specialized lathe stand or bench that would be very heavy. The result is what you see in this video, using standard, kiln-dried, "2-by" framing lumber, a bunch of wood screws, and lots of wood glue. The paint was left-over stuff I found in the garage and I applied a couple of coats that left me with a surface much easier to clean dust off of. The height of the bench was dependent upon the height of the lathe spindle from the lathe bottom, and the height of my elbow from the ground when standing. This was done to facilitate a comfortable position for me whenever using the lathe. Please "Subscribe," "like," and "share." This is a workbench frame I made of using only 2x6 boards, glue, and screws. The joinery used is fairly simple, but will hold the frame together for a long time. I did not make a top for this frame since this stand will be used for my lathe. The lathe already came mounted on an old steel desktop. I will bolt the steel top to the frame once the lathe refurbishment is completed. After the frame was completed, I added a coat of polyurethane for added protection. The void under the table will eventually be filled with drawers that I will make once some other projects are completed. You can also add doors and shelves if you like. Thanks for watching. I recently upgraded my drill press and I thought this would be a good opportunity to build a lathe as a drill press has a lot of the needed components. This was an extremely fun woodworking project and seems to work really well for a homemade lathe. I uploaded this before but my voice was horrible so I put music over it. I got tired of my lathe taking up my whole workbench so I made a separate stand for it. This was my first time trying to do tenons like that, they came out kinda poor but gets the job done.

Go to http://lynda.com/april to get a free 10 day trial! A big thanks to Nick Ferry for doing the special effect at the end. ; ) For a written tutorial check out my blog at http://wilkerdos.com/2015/12/building-a-2x4-workbench/ My dad really needed a workbench for his garage and asked if it was something I wanted to build. : ) Of course I said yes. So here I show you how to build a very simple but sturdy eight foot workbench out of only 2x4s and plywood. I added pegboard only at the top because my dad wanted to have a space where he could reach the workbench surface from either side. However, you could very easily add a full sheet of pegboard instead and have it go all the way down to the workbench surface. I continued woodworking through high school, and started woodturning after seeing a turned project in a friends shop. Shortly after YouTube started, I was looking for a howto video for duck calls, with no results I decided to make my own video. Some of my fondest memories are working with my grandfather in his wood shop. Being able to share our passion for woodworking, ties it all together. -~-~~-~~~-~~-~- Please watch: "Wood Turning" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ig3HuD2qcds -~-~~-~~~-~~-~-

Welcome to part 1 of this 2-part series where I turn this 4” ¼” wall steel tubing scrap into a lathe stand for my Atlas Quick Change 54 Lathe that I received for free. In this picture, you will note that it was bolted to a folding table and the bird poop was also included for free. The first step was to cut 28” pieces into 14” pieces. I split them in half at 30 degrees for the top of each leg. I then cut the bottom of each leg at 15 degrees. This goofy yellow angle/measuring contraption actually came in kind of handy, I set an angle of 150 degrees at 8” and 25/32, this would give me the intersection of the 2 legs when they’re standing on the ground. Here I’m setting up a jig to weld the 2 legs together. So, I turn on my welder and all of the sudden my camera decides to quit. So here I’m cutting the uprights for each leg, and they were 24” long with a 45 from center. Here I’m cutting 3” flat bar at 4” for the pads of each foot. I tacked the 4 pieces of flat bar together to allow me to drill just 1 hole. Here you will see me welding ½-13 nuts to each of those flat bar pieces to accommodate an adjustable foot There you can the adjustable foot with a rubber pad on it and I began to weld the flat bar pieces to the legs Now that the foots pads are welded in place, I weld the uprights for each leg. Fit up was fairly poor considering I was using a chop saw, so I wanted to clamp it all together to make sure I had everything lined up. And the last step for part 1 will be welding this 41” crossmember in between the legs. Thanks for watching part 1, in part 2 I will be adding the mounting plate and motor mount. It has already proven to be useful in- and outside the shop. Also the first time I could use the metal lathe. By the way, this was no cheap project. All materials together cost about 200€, but still totally worth the investment! Link to the metal hardware: http://cncshop.at/index.php?s=3 Enjoy the video!

this is a short (just kidding its quite long) video of my home built bowl lathe. i made this video because over the past year i have received a huge amount of requests for information on the lathe, its construction, specifications and plans. i built the lathe from sketches based on the components i could find at a reasonable expense. this is my third home built lathe and definitely the heaviest duty. if you have any questions pleas put them in the comments and i WILL get to them.

A full step by step is posted on my written tutorial here: http://wilkerdos.com/2014/02/diy-rolling-drill-press-stand/ For a similiar set of plans click here: http://wilkerdos.com/product/mobile-shop-stand-plans/ I was sick of having to lift my drill press up from the floor to a work bench every time I wanted to use it, so I spent a few hours and made a dedicated stand for it. this bench (I hope) will be used to hold my grizzly lathe. which is currently resting on a wood bench, which isn't sturdy so the lathe wobbles. I've placed wheels on bottom so the bench can be moved around the garage. There are 3/8 inch bolts on the bottom of the bench which will allow me to level the lathe. the steel is 3inch x 3inch angle. its come from a large building and was not required for the construction, so I convinced the owner I would remove it for free from his property as it was an eye sore. I don't remember how long it was but I needed to cut it into 4 lengths to fit on the back of my truck.

In this video I build two rolling workbenches that can be used as assembly tables, lathe tables, basic workbenches, or for rolling tool storage. These tables easily roll under other work benches to maximize space in your shop or garage. ORDER PLANS HERE: https://tommytompkins.com/product/tompkins-miter-saw-station-with-rolling-workbench
