One of the best ways to improve your health quickly is by learning how to read nutrition labels. The first thing you’ll notice at the top of nutrition facts are the serving size and servings per container. This is simply the “amount” in the package or container. Pretty self explanatory... Next you have the ingredients. Everything inside these black lines is representative of ONE serving. This is important to understand because, next you will see the calories and the calories from fat. This is pretty much the only thing most people ever look at and this is a common mistake… If the package says 200 calories on the bag of chips, but the serving per container says 2.5, that means there is actually 500 calories in the bag… This is a clever little marketing trick that you should pay attention to. Pressing on, you will see the total fat on the package along with a number and a percentage on the right hand side. The number represents the total fat in one serving and percentage represents the percentage based on a 2000 calorie diet. So 8 gram is 12% of a 2000 calorie diet. I should also remind you that fat is not bad for you and there are plenty of healthy foods that are high in fat. What you really want to watch out for is any trans fat. Trans fat is the kind linked to heart disease and all sorts of bad stuff. Avoid this at all costs. Saturated fat should be much less of a concern. This may surprise some of you, so I will link a few studies below that have conclusively proven that saturated fat is fine to eat and not the cause of the many diseases it was wrongly accused for. Think of saturated fat as the middle child of the fat family, he’s got a good heart but is just a little misunderstood. Now, you may be thinking, wait a minute… Why does the total number of saturated fat and trans fat not add up to the total fat at the top… Where’s the other 7 grams? Well this is because not all fats will be listed on the nutrition label. Only the nutrients deemed most important ever make it to the nutrition labels. Don’t worry though. The other fats not listed are generally healthy and should be much less of a concern. Pressing on you will see cholesterol and sodium. Remember, these numbers are based on ONE serving. If the sodium was 25% of your daily intake and the package had 2.5 servings in it. That means the entire package contains 63% of you daily sodium intake. Quite a bit considering this is one snack. Onward, you’ll sees the carbohydrate section. Carbohydrates are the breads, grains, fiber and SUGARS in the food. The first section you’ll see is for dietary fiber. Having a good amount of dietary fiber is a good thing as it helps with digestion and satisfaction from meals. Now the next section is what you need to pay attention to. The total sugars in the food you’re eating are important to watch out for as, like the trans fats, these have been linked to a whole host of diseases and health problems. Also you should be aware of not only the sugar in the food, but what kind of carbohydrates you’re eating. If the food is very high in carbohydrates, but low in dietary fiber, even though the carbs are not labeled as “sugar,” they will operate very similarly in the blood stream. These are called “simple carbs.” This is why you need to watch out for unrefined carbohydrates like white bread and pastas. Next up, you’ll see the label for protein. Knowing that foods high in protein lead to better satisfaction from meals, and promote lean muscle tissue, you will want most of the foods you eat to have a good amount of protein. Finally, we have a few key vitamins at the bottom. It may sound strange, but ignore these. The numbers will be notoriously low and you should be focusing instead on getting in lots of fruits and vegetables every day to meet your vitamin requirements. Leafy greens contain calcium and iron, and fruits contain vitamin c and a. The rest of the nutrition labels facts contain recommendations about how much of each category to get in. They do not change on nutrition labels and are not that important. Finally, on some labels you will see the calories per gram for each macronutrient. Fat contains 9 grams per serving and Carbohydrates and Proteins contain 4. So for every 10 grams of fat, you will have 90 calories. For every 10 grams of protein or carbs you will get 40 calories. Safe to say, you should now have a general understanding of how nutrition labels work. Most importantly, you can stop assuming something is healthy for you based on tricky packaging and start KNOWING the difference.

Peripheral arterial disease (P.A.D.) occurs when plaque (plak) builds up in the arteries that carry blood to your head, organs, and limbs. Plaque is made up of fat, cholesterol, calcium, fibrous tissue, and other substances in the blood. When plaque builds up in arteries, the condition is called atherosclerosis (ATH-er-o-skler-O-sis). Over time, plaque can harden and narrow the arteries. This limits the flow of oxygen-rich blood to your organs and other parts of your body. P.A.D. usually affects the legs, but also can affect the arteries that carry blood from your heart to your head, arms, kidneys, and stomach. This article focuses on P.A.D. that affects blood flow to the legs. Peripheral artery disease, also known as peripheral arterial disease, is a common circulatory problem in which narrowed arteries reduce blood flow to your limbs. When you develop peripheral artery disease (PAD), your extremities — usually your legs — don't receive enough blood flow to keep up with demand. This causes symptoms, most notably leg pain when walking (intermittent claudication). Peripheral artery disease is also likely to be a sign of widespread accumulation of fatty deposits in your arteries (atherosclerosis). This condition may be reducing blood flow to your heart and brain, as well as your legs. Often, you can successfully treat peripheral artery disease by quitting tobacco if you smoke, exercising and eating a healthy diet. Early diagnosis and treatment can prevent peripheral artery disease from getting worse and also help you reduce your risk of heart disease and stroke.

One is infectious, another is chronic. Infectious diseases are those, which happen because of an external invasion. An external organism invades the system and causes certain trouble which has to be dealt with medication. But chronic ailment, what it means is, our own body is creating the problem. The disease is being manufactured in the system. This is common knowledge that every cell in the body is programmed for health. But why would it cause an ailment? Something very fundamental has gone off balance or there is a certain level of misunderstanding within the system itself, that instead of creating health, it’s creating ill-health. And we may be incubating this misunderstanding in so many different ways. When I say misunderstanding, not misunderstanding or understanding of your mind – on the cellular level, on the elemental level, there is a misunderstanding. So these things can be altered just by bringing about a certain balance in the system, activating a certain level of inner energy and accessing the innermost dimension of who you are, which is the very maker of this body. The very maker of this body is within you. When this is so, if there is a repair job to be done on this body, should you go to the manufacturer or to the local mechanic? Because the problem is being generated from within, it is very important than an inner solution is found for this. The Inner Engineering process is just about this, that you find access to this deepest dimension of intelligence and competence within ourselves, which is capable of generating this body, creating this body – from what kind of material? If you eat a piece of bread, it turns into human system in a few hours’ time. So there is that dimension of intelligence and competence within this, if only you found access to that, health is not even something that you have to struggle with. So finding access to this has many steps to be taken. The simplest step that one needs to take is that one becomes open to the possibility, first of all. Thinking and understanding that, “For all the problems that I have, there is an external cause and there is an external solution” is a very foolish way to approach the whole process. For ailments, chronic ailments like diabetes, hypertension, cardiac ailments, asthma, allergies, obesity, eating disorders and many of these kinds, which are all essentially generated from within – all these things can be quelled from within if only we are willing to pay a certain level of attention to the innermost dimension of who we are. Inner Engineering is a powerful process of approaching the inner core of who you are in a scientific manner and this is definitely a way to create a healthful life. The liver is the biggest organ in the body. It serves hundreds of different roles that are vital for the health of the body. One of the liver’s primary functions is to produce bile. The food must first combine with bile. Without enough bile, the small intestine can't digest fat and calcium from the meal. Poor bile secretion leaves food undigested and subjects them to bacteria. The gallbladder is a small sac located on the right-hand side of the body, on the underside of the liver. A normal, healthy gallbladder holds about two fluid ounces (60 ml) of bile. Its primary function is to store bile from the liver. The liver stores bile in the gallbladder and releases it when needed. Gallbladder stones are a dangerous threat to all these vital tasks of the liver. They reduce the amount of bile that the liver can produce and make it difficult to digest food. Much of the undigested food begins to ferment and putrefy and puts the toxic waste matter in the blood and lymph. Gallstones are soft or hard stones that only form in gall. They consist of cholesterol, salt, or bilirubin. They range in size. Some can be as small as a grain of sand or as large as an apricot. 80% of gallstones are cholesterol. The other 20% consists of calcium salts and bilirubin. Calcified gallstones in the gallbladder are for the most part made of calcified bilirubin. They can be light brown or black or other colors. Brown stones contain more cholesterol and calcium than black stones. Gallstones form in both the liver’s bile ducts and the gallbladder. Most gallstones start in the liver, and few occur in the gallbladder. Patients with cancer and other chronic illnesses have the most stones in their liver. Causes of gallstones Food high in cholesterol is the primary culprit for the development of gallstones. These foods include animal products like red meats, poultry, fish, and dairy products. We're in fact plant-eaters. The human intestine is long and coiled, much like that of apes, cows, and horses. Our digestion is slow and allows time to break down and absorb the nutrients from plants. The intestine of a carnivore, like a cat, is short, straight, and tubular. Cholesterol exists only in animal foods – no plant contains it. A carnivore's liver has an unlimited capacity to process cholesterol. Humans, like other plant-eating animals, have organs with limited capabilities for cholesterol removal. Processed food is poison for the body and may cause the creation of gallstones. Medicines, drugs and birth control pills increase the risk of developing gallstones. A stressful lifestyle can alter the natural flora of the bile and create gallstones in the liver. Irregular sleep makes your body worse at defending against diseases. This can lead to many disorders like constipation, acid reflux, liver disease and more Other reasons for the creation of gallstones include: Dehydration Rapid weight loss Watching too much tv Overworking A lack of sunshine The Liver And Gallbladder Cleanse is a natural method of removing stones from the liver. Elevated Liver Enzymes What Causes Elevated Liver Enzymes? The goal of this video is to provide answers about what causes elevated liver enzymes and to encourage readers to have regular physical examinations to check for them. Liver problems rarely have symptoms in the early stages, and there can be significant liver damage before any signs or symptoms of trouble begin to appear. A regular physical exam that checks for elevated liver enzymes can be a vital tool in detecting liver disorders and conditions early so they can be treated effectively. What causes elevated liver enzymes? You need to know a little about what liver enzymes are and how the human liver functions. Your liver performs multiple roles related to metabolism and overall health. Some of the most important include synthesizing proteins, storing of glucose and certain vitamins, metabolizing carbohydrates, protein and fats, filtering toxic materials which can damage the body, and producing substances that break fats down. There are literally thousands of enzymes in the liver that help it accomplish its many tasks. When some of these enzymes accumulate at elevated levels, it's a sign that something is wrong. Elevated liver enzymes usually mean the liver isn't functioning properly and is being damaged. There are dozens - possibly hundreds - of causes of elevated liver enzymes. The most common include diabetes and drinking too much alcohol. Diseases like hepatitis and mononucleosis also damage the liver and trigger high levels of liver enzymes. You can also suffer liver damage from certain medications - especially if you take too much or don't follow dosage recommendations. Certain nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, cholesterol-lowering medications, antibiotics and anti-seizure medications lead the list here. Overuse of certain herbal supplements, such as kava, comfrey, pennyroyal and skullcap may all damage liver health. Liver diseases such as liver cancer, hemochromatosis and Wilson's disease trigger elevated liver enzymes, as can autoimmune disorders of the liver and bile ducts. It's not widely known that obesity can cause elevated liver enzymes. Individuals with obesity often have a condition known as fatty liver disease. When you have fatty liver disease, fat deposits accumulate in the liver and eventually cause inflammation and swelling. Inflammation can destroy liver cells and scar liver tissue. This scarring process is called cirrhosis, and if it's not treated, it can lead to fatal liver failure. If you have elevated liver enzymes, you'll usually need specific tests to determine exactly what's wrong. These tests could be an MRI, biopsy, ultrasound, CT scan, and liver blood tests.

Omega-3 and Omega-6 Ratio- Why Does it Matter? Lipids (commonly called ‘Fats’) are a diverse group of molecules- learn more about how our ratio of various types of fats are important to maintaining health. Since lipids (fats) are the primary component of the membrane that surrounds each cell in our bodies, it’s no wonder that the intake of healthy fats helps our bodies remain healthy. The focus of this video is the category of lipids called Polyunsaturated Fatty Acids (PUFAs). PUFAs can be split into several categories and in this video we explore the difference in Omega 3 fats and Omega 6 fats. Omega 6 Fats: This type of PUFA can be anti-inflammatory but when consumed in excess it quickly becomes pro-inflammatory (causing inflammation and oxidation in the body). Chronic inflammation has been shown in research to elevate risk of health problems like heart disease, metabolic syndrome, diabetes, arthritis, Alzheimer’s disease, and certain types of cancer. Omega 3 Fats: Omega-3 fatty acids are a sub-category of PUFAs as well and are generally considered to be anti-inflammatory in our bodies. There are three main types of Omega-3 fatty acids in our bodies that have known health implications: ALA, EPA, and DHA. Alpha-linolenic acid (ALA) is the shortest of the Omega-3s and can be used to build EPA. Unfortunately, the conversion rate of ALA to EPA is very poor with an estimated 1-10% being converted, depending on what research you’re looking at. This is also the primary source of intake of Omega-3s for most Americans with dietary sources including flaxseed oil, canola oil, chia, hemp, English Walnuts, and soybean oil. Eicasapnetenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) come mainly from fish so they are sometimes referred to as marine omega-3s. EPA is highly anti-inflammatory in the body and can also be used to make DHA, which is found in high concentrations in your brain and in your retina. A few health benefits of EPA/DHA found in research include healthier/stronger bones, improved mood regulation, reduced risk of Parkinson’s disease, reducing symptoms of Lupus and other autoimmune diseases including Multiple Sclerosis. Omega-3 fatty acid deficiencies in general have been linked to increased inflammation, depression, weight gain and diabetes, allergies and eczema, and memory problems and dyslexia. Ratio of Omega-3 to Omega-6 Fatty Acids: Most researchers agree that a 1:1 ratio or a 5:1 ratio of Omega-6s to Omega-3s is ideal for health. Currently, many Americans are consuming a ratio that is closer to 20:1 due to the rise in the consumption of processed vegetable oils in cooking and in packaged foods. Examples of sources of Omega-6 Fatty acids includes corn oil, canola oil, soybean oil, hydrogenated or partially hydrogenated fats, cottonseed oil, margarine, and shortening . Signs and symptoms that your Omega-6 to Omega-3 ratio may be out of balance include fatigue, poor wound healing, problems learning, cracked skin on heels or fingertips, lowered immunity and frequent infections, and dry/flaky skin. How do you improve your Omega-6 to Omega-3 Ratio in your food choices? 1. Start eliminating processed foods and processed oils that have been refined and heated such as margarine, corn oil, safflower, sunflower, soy oil, and hydrogenated oils. 2. Your body does need some omega-6 fatty acids so obtain these from free range or grass fed meats that are higher in omega-6 like CLA. REMEMBER: The ideal ratio is a 1:1 ratio, not a 0:1 ratio! 3. Consume unprocessed oils such as extra virgin olive oil, coconut oil, and avocado oil. 4. Consume raw nuts and seeds such as organic flax seeds, chia seeds, sunflower seeds, sesame seeds, pumpkin seeds, almonds, and English walnuts. 5. Consume egg yolks from pastured hens which are rich in omega-3s Please remember that increasing Omega-3 fatty acids alone is not enough to achieve the full health benefits of Omega-3 fatty acids- we also have to decrease the Omega-6 intake using the tips above. Omega-3 supplementation should be implemented as a part of a total nutrition plan which should include eliminating refined/processed foods and excess sugar and focus on whole foods including fresh produce and organic meats. Is coconut oil good for you? Vegetable oil consumers will answer 'no' because coconut oil contains saturated fats and is bad for your heart. The world has been told saturated fats such as those found in coconut oil will increase our cholesterol and therefore poses high risk of heart disease. The truth about coconut oil began in the 60s and 70s. Back then research findings revealed selected types of saturated fats increase blood cholesterol. Together with the concept of higher cholesterol increases risk of heart disease, saturated oils were labelled as bad food stuff. The world was told to reduce intake of coconut oil. During the 80s the ASA (American Soybean Association) capitalized on the public fear of saturated fats and their link to heart problems. It tapped into this fear to attack tropical oils. The aim was to conquer the oil market by booting out the tropical oils. ASA borrowed the power of the media to spread bad publicity of tropical oils as a new health threat. Stern warnings for the public centered around the message that coconut oil being a saturated oil would lead to heart attacks. ASA took extreme measures to accomplish its ends. It designed a special kit and made it available to all soybean farmers. The soybean growers used this kit to press the government bodies and food producers to discard coconut oil and palm oil. This led to a massive lobbying for replacement of coconut oil with soybean oils. The ASA also managed to form ally with a nonprofit consumer group known as Center for Science in the Public Interest (CSPI). The CSPI became a powerful ally to the insidious scheme of ASA. CSPI gave ASA's agenda a powerful impact as it was a nonprofit organization. The CSPI launched a massive attack and went all out to kill tropical oils as though they were the most evil thing human ever encountered. The CSPI came out with a pamphlet Saturated Fat Attack and used it to publicize the evils of tropical oils while promoting the goods of soybean oils. This pamphlet was criticised by a nutritional biochemist named Dr Mary G. Enig as full of mistakes and wrongly informed the public about oils and fats. Sadly, the ignorance and unprofessionalism of CSPI made them a fool and puppet for the ASA. The CSPI failed in their duty to provide truthful information to the public. The public sentiment towards tropical oils was so strong that people regarded anything with coconut or palm oil as unhealthy. Food makers and restaurants ceased using coconut oil and changed to soybean or other vegetable oils. Movie theaters started making popcorns in soybean oil. The ASA won the Oil War! By the 1990s, the tropical oils market almost vanished because of the attack by ASA. Is coconut oil good for you? Not to the ASA and the CSPI. Because of this oil war, the influence went virtually around the globe. The price of such greedy propaganda is a proliferation of health problems wherever vegetable oils are used instead of tropical oils. This is the saddest reality stemming out of a battle triggered by greed and money. When you want to express something, correct phrases and sentences just come to you. Most of this process is unconscious. Stephen Krashen, a professor at the University of Southern California and a linguistics expert, has developed a hypothesis to explain how this is possible. He used his Input Hypothesis to design what he calls a “natural approach” to learning a language. Krashen uses “input” in this context to describe the words and sentences that you read and listen to. If you understand these sentences, they are stored in your brain. More specifically, they are stored in the part of your brain that is responsible for language. Krashen uses his hypothesis to explain how a child learns his or her native language. The child listens to his or her parents and other people. As the child’s brain collects these words and sentences, he or she gets better and better at producing sentences on his or her own. By age 5, the child can already speak quite fluently. According to Krashen’s theory, the way to learn and improve is to feed your brain with a lot of input – correct and understandable sentences, written or spoken. ★What is it the important to learn vocabulary words? If you only master a little words in your English vocabulary, you cannot understand others express or ideas, and lacking of vocabulary also has a bad effect on your reading and writing skills. These are the most important problem when you are an English leaner. Because the main goal when you learn English that you can communicate globally. On the other hand, learning vocabulary is a crucial thing by these reasons: Vocabulary is the key to communication When you learn English, the ultimate goal is to be able to communicate all over the world. But if you don’t have to much words, you can not express your own ideas or understand others. The more words you know, the more you will learn When you read books or magazines, you will use context to understanding the other words that you don’t know their meaning. But you must have a significant vocabulary to be able to learn new words from the context in which they appear. However, you can overcome this problem when you have significant words by improving your vocabulary. ★How to Improve and Expand Your Vocabulary? Read, read, and read The more you read the more words you will learn. When reading, you can uncover new words and understand their meaning from the context of the paragraph as well as from looking up the meaning in a dictionary. Learn a word a day This is a positive technique that many English learners use to learn vocabulary, but you can learn more than one word a day. It is possible that you should learn five or ten words a day as well as you are able to do it, and you can use some methods like software, English lessons, or English videos to practice your vocabulary.. Play games This technique helps you discover new meanings and new words in a fun way.
