One of the best ways to improve your health quickly is by learning how to read nutrition labels. The first thing you’ll notice at the top of nutrition facts are the serving size and servings per container. This is simply the “amount” in the package or container. Pretty self explanatory... Next you have the ingredients. Everything inside these black lines is representative of ONE serving. This is important to understand because, next you will see the calories and the calories from fat. This is pretty much the only thing most people ever look at and this is a common mistake… If the package says 200 calories on the bag of chips, but the serving per container says 2.5, that means there is actually 500 calories in the bag… This is a clever little marketing trick that you should pay attention to. Pressing on, you will see the total fat on the package along with a number and a percentage on the right hand side. The number represents the total fat in one serving and percentage represents the percentage based on a 2000 calorie diet. So 8 gram is 12% of a 2000 calorie diet. I should also remind you that fat is not bad for you and there are plenty of healthy foods that are high in fat. What you really want to watch out for is any trans fat. Trans fat is the kind linked to heart disease and all sorts of bad stuff. Avoid this at all costs. Saturated fat should be much less of a concern. This may surprise some of you, so I will link a few studies below that have conclusively proven that saturated fat is fine to eat and not the cause of the many diseases it was wrongly accused for. Think of saturated fat as the middle child of the fat family, he’s got a good heart but is just a little misunderstood. Now, you may be thinking, wait a minute… Why does the total number of saturated fat and trans fat not add up to the total fat at the top… Where’s the other 7 grams? Well this is because not all fats will be listed on the nutrition label. Only the nutrients deemed most important ever make it to the nutrition labels. Don’t worry though. The other fats not listed are generally healthy and should be much less of a concern. Pressing on you will see cholesterol and sodium. Remember, these numbers are based on ONE serving. If the sodium was 25% of your daily intake and the package had 2.5 servings in it. That means the entire package contains 63% of you daily sodium intake. Quite a bit considering this is one snack. Onward, you’ll sees the carbohydrate section. Carbohydrates are the breads, grains, fiber and SUGARS in the food. The first section you’ll see is for dietary fiber. Having a good amount of dietary fiber is a good thing as it helps with digestion and satisfaction from meals. Now the next section is what you need to pay attention to. The total sugars in the food you’re eating are important to watch out for as, like the trans fats, these have been linked to a whole host of diseases and health problems. Also you should be aware of not only the sugar in the food, but what kind of carbohydrates you’re eating. If the food is very high in carbohydrates, but low in dietary fiber, even though the carbs are not labeled as “sugar,” they will operate very similarly in the blood stream. These are called “simple carbs.” This is why you need to watch out for unrefined carbohydrates like white bread and pastas. Next up, you’ll see the label for protein. Knowing that foods high in protein lead to better satisfaction from meals, and promote lean muscle tissue, you will want most of the foods you eat to have a good amount of protein. Finally, we have a few key vitamins at the bottom. It may sound strange, but ignore these. The numbers will be notoriously low and you should be focusing instead on getting in lots of fruits and vegetables every day to meet your vitamin requirements. Leafy greens contain calcium and iron, and fruits contain vitamin c and a. The rest of the nutrition labels facts contain recommendations about how much of each category to get in. They do not change on nutrition labels and are not that important. Finally, on some labels you will see the calories per gram for each macronutrient. Fat contains 9 grams per serving and Carbohydrates and Proteins contain 4. So for every 10 grams of fat, you will have 90 calories. For every 10 grams of protein or carbs you will get 40 calories. Safe to say, you should now have a general understanding of how nutrition labels work. Most importantly, you can stop assuming something is healthy for you based on tricky packaging and start KNOWING the difference.

I've seen many, many people go through health crises, get diseases and everything you can imagine all the while being very, very consistent with their exercise. Is a good track record with exercise consistency something to always be proud of? A common denominator I see quite regularly in competitive athletes -- and even everyday people -- is pushing themselves way too hard and not listening to what our body is telling us right here and now. This has a lot to do with our psychic development and belief systems. Where we get our sense of self-value, self-worth and self-esteem from has to do with our peer groups. It has to do with the hierarchy of social rank in our peer groups too. Who's the badass? Who are you emulating? What are you trying to accomplish? These issues of hierarchy pop up over and over again in research on cancer and other diseases. They form typically because of eating the S.A.D. Toxins get backed up in your biliary tube within your liver which prevents bile, toxins, and cholesterol from draining out from the liver. This causes gallbladder disease symptoms like: digestive problems occur only right after eating a high fat meal chronic diarrhea hormonal imbalance headaches skin problems intense pain in the upper right part of the abdomen, shoulder, behind breastbone fever chills nausea vomiting extreme exhaustion Acute, intense pain occurs if a huge gallstone passes through the common bile duct. This is especially true if you eat a high fat meal, which stimulates the flow of bile from the gallbladder. Sometimes a gallstone gets stuck in the bile duct, blocking the flow of bile into the intestine. Symptoms that accompany this are: jaundice (yellowing of the skin) inflammation of the gallbladder dark urine rapid heartbeat and abrupt blood pressure drop feces appears gray-white severe pain in the upper right side of the abdomen fever, chills, nausea, vomiting, severe pain in the upper right abdomen x-rays may not show gallstone formation because some of them may not have calcified (which is how they are detected). Small gallstones can pass through the biliary tubing and bile duct without notice and eventually be expelled from the body. But gallstones that get trapped in the gallbladder or bile tubing and ducts can cause, pain, inflammation, and even infection! Gallstones in the liver and gallbladder absorb toxins and become breeding ground for parasites and bacteria. When gallstones have formed, they continue to get bigger and bigger and can block biliary passageways in the liver. This shuts off the flow of bile to the gallbladder and to the intestines. These large gallstones can also block the biliary tubing which causes the liver to make less bile. This decreases your ability to digest your foods, because without bile, you can't break down fats and oils. Then your cholesterol increases! You liver begins to deteriorate! Gallstones provide a breeding ground for microorganisms, which can lead to infections and slows down liver function even more. Fats have been a key part of the human diet for countless generations. They are a critical nutrient, and it's recommended that you get between 20 and 35 percent of your daily calories from fats. In our attempts to understand how fats affect nutrition, some misconceptions have come about. In particular, saturated fats have sometimes been criticized as being "unhealthy". However, research has shown that this is not necessarily the case because not all foods containing saturated fats are nutritionally the same. Saturated fats tend to be solid at room temperature and occur naturally in foods like meats and dairy products, and in baked or fried foods, which also contain dietary cholesterol. Saturated fats are different from unsaturated fats, which tend to be liquid at room temperature. Foods containing unsaturated fats include canola oil and olive oil. Saturated fats and trans fats, a special type of unsaturated fats, and are so-called "bad fats" because they can raise cholesterol levels in your blood and increase your risk of heart disease and stroke. Other unsaturated fats, namely monounsaturated and polyunsaturated, can help lower blood cholesterol levels and may lower the risk of developing heart disease. These "better" fats are found in nuts, seafood, and a variety of vegetable oils including canola, olive, peanut, sunflower, and palm oils. Additionally, each type of food has its own "fat profile". Many contain a mixture of saturated and unsaturated fats, and these fats can themselves be comprised of different fatty acids. For that reason, it is not correct to simply lump all foods with saturated fats together. They're not all alike, and some are simply better for your health than others. Many focus on how eating saturated fats affects LDL (or "bad") cholesterol levels in the body. And while some saturated fats can make LDL levels worse, others have no such negative effect on them. Palm oil is one such food. In fact, in one study, those using palm oil actually saw an 11% increase in "good" cholesterol levels. Palm oil contains about 40% saturated fat and 60% unsaturated fat, and it is used the world over for cooking and baking. Palm oil comes from the reddish fruit pulp of the oil palm tree, and is quite different from other oils that are considered alternatives to it. You might be surprised to hear that palm oil has 45 percent less saturated fat than coconut oil, 17 percent less than cocoa butter, and even has 7 percent less saturated fat than dairy butter. Indeed, the European Food Information Council has confirmed that there is no nutritional need to switch from palm oil to an alternative. Palm oil can be a good source of the fats your body needs as part of a balanced, varied diet. As with all foods, moderation is the key to health.

Although fats are often seen as a bad nutrient option and something we should stay away from, healthy fats are also very important for our bodies. Saturated and trans fats should be limited, but our bodies do need healthy fats for overall health. This makes olive oil a tremendous source of healthy fats that can promote our overall health and provide many different health benefits. Lets discuss some of the incredible health benefits that consuming olive oil consistently can provide. 1. First, olive oil is a great source of monounsaturated fats that can benefit our body. It contains high levels of a monounsaturated fat known as oleic acid, which is very healthy and provides many health benefits. It can help to reduce inflammation through out our entire bodies, benefit our heart and can even have benefits for some types of cancer. As well, olive oil contains smaller amounts of omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids. 2. Consuming olive oil can also help to reduce inflammation throughout the entire body. This is because olive oil is packed with healthy antioxidants that work to reduce inflammation when consumed. It contains a powerful and potent antioxidant known as oleocanthal that has been found to specifically reduce inflammation and treat other symptoms associated with it, such as stiffness and pain. Also, the important fatty acid in olive oil known as oleic acid can also help to reduce inflammation. 3. Olive oil can also improve the overall health of our heart while protecting us against certain heart ailments and diseases. As mentioned previously, olive oil is great for reducing inflammation, which can be one of the risk factors for heart disease. Perhaps even more important for the overall health of our heart, it can also lower the risk of “bad” LDL cholesterol oxidation, prevent unwanted blood clotting and even improve the health of our blood vessels. If that wasn’t enough, studies have also shown that olive oil can help to lower high blood pressure. 4. Since olive oil is high in fats, you would think it would easily cause weight gain. If over consumed, this can certainly be a possibility due to the high amount of calories it contains. If we consume olive oil in moderation, studies have demonstrated that it can actually help with weight loss. These studies have found that olive oil can have favourable effects on both body weight and weight loss. This is because the monounsaturated fats found in olive oil are stored and used differently by our bodies then fats such as saturated and trans fats. 5. It can also have positive effects for our skin and help to delay the signs of premature aging. This is because olive oil is so rich in skin healthy antioxidants that can work to reduce free radicals in the body leading to oxidative stress which can hurt and damage our skin. Extra virgin olive oil contains almost 40 different antioxidant chemicals alone, which makes it such an amazing antioxidant source. Also, since it can help to reduce inflammation so effectively, this will help the skin look more radiant and healthy. 6. Lastly, consuming olive oil regularly may also be able to help those individuals who are at risk of developing type 2 diabetes or who are already suffering with this disease. Regular consumption of olive oil may actually help to protect against developing diabetes along with other changes in diet. It can have beneficial effects on both blood sugar and insulin sensitivity. As well, olive oil is low on the glycemic index and has important vitamins, minerals and nutrients to promote our overall health. Discuss with your medical practitioner other prevention and treatment measures related to diabetes. Again, try not to over consume olive oil and to eat it regularly, but in moderation.
