PPL | Lesson #15 | 15-09-2016 | Precautionary Low Level Circuits

53:50
The title of this lesson should have been ‘Local Area Solo #1’…. Except the weather and visibility had other ideas. However, it presented the perfect opportunity to do some precautionary low level circuits, AKA bad weather circuits. Before we taxied out, my instructor fed me another little ‘nugget’, this time to do with the back-up radio. He demonstrated what to do if the main radio fails at 1:58. To check the secondary radio or ‘box’ we requested a radio check on box 2. However, my instructor failed to inform me of how they would respond, which led to quite an amusing moment of me transmitting something I had no idea of the meaning. This was “5’s also” which is apparently a scale from 1-5 with reference to the quality of radio transmission. What I clearly missed was that the response to my radio check was “5’s on box 2” which then made a lot more sense once explained :). This turned out to be one of the more fun lessons I’ve had. Not that they’re not all fun, but there’s only so much enjoyment to be had from standard circuits :). This would be used if for example the weather deteriorated badly or the cloud base dropped to below the standard 1000ft circuit height. The general theory, if the time permits, is to fly a circuit at 70kts with 25 degree flaps at 500ft to check for suitability of the landing area, then another circuit at 100ft to inspect the landing surface suitability, then another circuit to finally land. The final approach should be done at 60kts with full flaps, using power all the way down to 10ft. To demonstrate a short field landing, as soon as we touched down, the brakes were applied to achieve as short as possible landing distance. I guestimate that we were stopping within around 300m of the start of the runway. We realised that on my last couple of landings I was attempting these short field technique whilst a slight tail wind had developed! At the end of the lesson we did a couple more grass landings. There’s something much more satisfying about landing smoothly on the shorter grass runway. Something I’m looking forward to pursuing post-PPL is farm strip flying 1) to increase my confidence to fly into shorter strips and 2) for the challenge of landing at shorter strips. Highlights 01:58 – “5’s on box 2” 08:03 – Take off #1 15:30 – 500ft go-around (landing area inspection) 18:50 – 100ft go-around (surface inspection) 22:25 – Landing #1 (short field technique demo’d by instructor) 24:20 – Take off #2 (short field technique) 29:15 – 100ft go-around (surface inspection) 33:10 – Landing #2 (short field technique) 34:30 – Take off #3 (short field technique) 39:00 – Landing #3 (short field technique) 40:45 – Take off #4 44:25 – Landing #4 (grass with go-around) 49:25 – Landing #5 (grass) My next lesson is booked for Tuesday 20th September, with fingers crossed for some better weather for my first Local Area Solo! I’m filming using a GoPro Hero4 with suction mount and a special adaptor to capture the headset and ATC audio. If anyone would like any more info on the set up – just drop me a comment below! PPL | Lesson #7 | 06-08-16 | Circuits and First Solo!

55:21
Everything just came together today – perfect weather, last minute cancellation, close family available, and G-BORK (I had been scheduled tomorrow to be in another PA28 which I hadn’t flown before). All that was standing in front of me and going solo today were a few perfect circuits to prove to my instructor I can fly a plane. However, it wasn’t going to be made easy for me… Circuit 1 – all was fine, there was lots of thermals today so my circuit height varied by + - 100ft but nothing too horrendous. Circuit 2 is where things got interesting. On final, another plane announced they were on base leg (Issue #1 – they used the wrong call sign and had to be corrected, although I’m sure this is easily done). Since we were doing a touch and go this wasn’t an issue as we should be clear of the runway well before they wanted to land. On climbing out, the same plane announced that they were going around (obviously something had gone wrong with their landing, but I was conscious this had now reduced our already small amount of separation). On turning downwind, just before calling downwind ourselves, the same plan announces they are already on downwind and we had no visual whatsoever! Both my instructor and I were frantically looking out of the windows to get visual, before my instructor had to radio them to confirm their position. I was concerned that they may be climbing underneath us and since were in a PA28 (low-wing) we may not see them! Eventually we get visual and since they’d had to go around, they decided that they were going to use the ‘inner circuit’!? Whatever that was, my instructor let them know how he felt then we carried on, somewhat a little distracted. Distracted so much so that we hadn’t seen a glider coming straight at us around 1-200ft above! I only spotted it as it was directly overhead. It can be seen approaching just above the d of ‘affected’ at 22:20 in the video. When reflecting on this lesson – it just shows how constantly alert you have to be, even during the slightest distraction. Despite all the distraction on this circuit, I managed to pull off my first ‘greaser’ as they are affectionately known. Basically, a landing that you barely feel when you transition from air to ground. A quick check in my log book tells me I’ve personally landed 14 times before I achieved this. Circuit 3 - just to really test me, on climbing out of this touch and go, my instructor gave me an Engine Failure After Take Off (EFATO) and then just before landing to let him out gave me a practice balloon. Just to finish off the 3 circuits perfectly, I pulled out another greaser whilst recovering from the balloon – I couldn’t have been more chuffed. At this point, my instructor asked me to pull over for him to get out. After a quick brief to do one circuit and land, he left the cockpit and it was all down to me! Overall it went well. On take-off, I didn’t really acknowledge the fact that I had a perfect crosswind so forgot to aim the ailerons into wind on take-off, luckily the wind wasn’t too bad. The circuit and approach weren’t perfect, but satisfactory given the situation. Just as I was about to touch down it began to drift to the right, my brain seemingly not telling me to correct by applying left rudder, perhaps thinking I was too low. Just as I contemplated applying full power to go around, there was a firm touchdown on the main wheels and I was down. Slightly disappointed it hadn’t been like the previous 2 ‘greasers’ but happy I’d just completed my first solo! In all the excitement I left my annotated checklist behind in the plane. Nothing a quick text to my instructor couldn’t solve who helpfully removed it from G-BORK and popped it in my training file. A look in my log book tells me that, since starting my PPL ‘properly’ at the start of July, I have done 6 lessons and 5.7 hours prior to my first solo! I have 9 hours total in my log book, just over 3 hours of which were from a few experience flights over 6 years ago – I vaguely remember chasing Virgin Pendolino’s down the West Coast Main Line! My instructor commented that I’d been the lowest hours student he has sent solo in over 40 years of training. I felt honoured. Highlights 12:00 – Take off 18:25 – Touch & Go #1 19:50 – Start of issues… 21:38 – Turning downwind… 22:20 – GLIDER!! (Can be seen approaching just above the d of ‘affected’ at 22:20) 25:10 – Touch & Go #2 26:20 – First ‘Greaser’ 27:33 – EFATO practice 33:12 – Landing for instructor to vacate… 34:10 – Practice balloon 35:17 – First solo brief 39:15 – First solo taxi 43:53 – First solo take off 50:08 – First solo landing My next lesson is booked for Saturday 13th August where I’ll be doing more circuits and hopefully more solo! Thanks for reading and watching. All comments are welcome. If you’d like to see more please like and subscribe ✈

In the series, I'll be using X-plane 11 but you can for that matter use any flight simulator of choice. To make the series I've got assistance from flight instructor Cameron AKA Voidhawk9 from the X-plane.org forums! It will be a step-to-step guide, much the same way you would learn to fly a real aircraft if you were taking private pilot flight lessons! The series assumes little or no knowledge of flying, so it is suitable for beginners, useful to those with a bit more experience in furthering their skills or as a training aid for those taking real flying lessons! The first part will be the VFR part and will contain a number of lessons about the flight controls, flying straight and level, turns, circuits and so on! The second part will be the IFR or instrument flight rules part containing a number of lessons about the flight instruments, radio navigation, holding patterns, ILs, flight planning etc! I hope you'll enjoy the series and find the tutorials useful ;-) Wanna help me create more high-quality content and support me? This procedure is tedious, but it requires very little fancy math and it's conceptually beautiful. You ought to be able to look at the finished product and explain WHY the values of voltage drops and currents for each resistor and combination of resistors have the relationships they do. Yay! You can now simplify any circuit with just one battery and a bunch of resistors...or can you? Those in the know call this finding the Thevenin Equivalent circuit, 'cause the method was proven by Thevenin long ago. Want more? A simple guide to electronic components.

38:06
By request:- A basic guide to identifying components and their functions for those who are new to electronics. This is a work in progress, and I welcome feedback from you guys on whether I should break it down into more manageable chunks. I've kept the maths to a minimum, since it can be off-putting to someone just getting started in electronics. The idea of this video is to slot in some more of the jigsaw pieces involved in learning electronics, when you start to recognise components, but aren't quite sure what they are or what they do. It's tricky to squeeze even the basics into a single video, and I've just realised how long this one is (and why it took all night to upload). Resistors In Series

05:12
Resistors in Series Two resistors are connected in series, which implies the tail of first resistor is connected to the head of second resistor. When the resistors are connected in series current flows through each resistor in the same direction as indicated in the diagram. The direction of the current is shown as I. From the above diagram we learn that I = I_1 = I_2 Total Voltage supplied by the battery is V. Let us suppose the voltage drop at the two resistors is V_1 and V_2 respectively. Total Voltage supplied by the battery (V_supplied) = Voltage drop at resistor_1 (V_1) + Voltage drop at resistor_2 (V_2) From Ohm's law V=IR Then Vsupplied = I_1R_1 + I_2R_2 Checkout for more information: https://www.tutorvista.com/content/science/science-ii/electricity/law-combination-resistors-series.php Follow us at: https://www.facebook.com/tutorvista https://twitter.com/TutorVista
