A new study found that diabetes patients who took metformin had a lower risk of developing open-angle glaucoma. "Should these findings be confirmed in other populations in prospective clinical trial, they may lead to novel treatments for this sight-threatening disease and offer new opportunities to reduce other risks of aging," wrote lead study author Julia E. Richards, PhD, of the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, and colleagues. Dr. Richards and team looked at patients with diabetes who took metformin (brand names Glumetza, Fortamet, Glucophage and Riomet). Open-angle glaucoma (OAG) is one of several types of glaucoma. In glaucoma, pressure inside the eye increases because fluid doesn't drain from the eye. This eventually impairs vision and may cause blindness. Glaucoma is usually painless. Diabetes is a metabolic disease in which the body’s inability to produce any or enough insulin (a hormone made by the pancreas) causes blood glucose (blood sugar) levels to rise. Patients with diabetes often must take medications to help keep their blood sugar under control. There are many possible complications of high blood sugar, including heart disease, nerve pain and vision problems. Glaucoma is not caused by diabetes. However, diabetes and glaucoma often coexist — especially in older patients. Past research found that medications like metformin may help reduce the risk of diabetic complications — but this is the first study to look at age-associated eye diseases like glaucoma, according to researchers.

It helps to keep joints patent and healthy. It helps to keep blood sugar stable. It’s credited with helping to boost your mental health and your mood.You may think daily exercise will also help with weight loss BUT a new study suggests otherwise. According to researchers at Loyola University Chicago Stritch School of Medicine, physical activity helps with overall health and it also helps you to maintain a certain level of fitness, however, there is limited evidence to suggest that it can “blunt the surge in obesity.” Researchers Drs. Cook and Luke have been studying the impact of fitness on obesity for years. Their expectation was to find that physical activity is a key tool in achieving meaningful weight loss. The preponderance of evidence suggests that the assumption may have some problems. If you are more active during the day, and especially if you engage with vigorous exercise, you will be hungrier. So the researchers point to the fact that calories consumed daily is key to losing or maintaining weight. And whether you move more or less, you have to monitor your total daily calories. What exercise I recommend (and do and love): HIIT (Hight Intensity Interval Training) Strong heart, strong lung make you live longer and 10x more weight loss High-intensity interval training (HIIT) describes any workout that alternates between intense bursts of activity and fixed periods of less-intense activity or even complete rest. For example, a good starter workout is running as fast as you can for 1 minute and then walking for 2 minutes. Repeat that 3-minute interval five times for a 15-minute, fat-blasting workout. It sounds too simple to be effective, but science doesn't stretch the truth. Read on for eight proven benefits of HIIT. I personally love and enjoy the TABATA style HIIT training, the basics are 8 repetitions, 20 second exercise as fast as you can, 10 seconds recovery and then repeat 8 times 8 benefits of HIIT Efficient - take between 4 to 30 minutes to get done Burn more fat - the fat burning benefits last longer that a long run in less time Build healthier heart - this type of exercise take the lung and the heart to the limits, very important for longevity No equipment - you only need your body You lose weight, no muscle - that's the goal Increase your metabolism - One of the reason you lose weight/fat Can be done anywhere It's challenging (and awesome) Weight Lifting exercise (a dose of metabolism boosting exercise) There is actually a long list of why you should include strength training in your program. These current numbers reflect readings after having had my medication (Metformin) dose cut in half.” He continued by saying, “I have lost 40 pounds.” Two other stories I’ve published came from two women who were pre-diabetic and taking Metformin (an anti-diabetes medication). A reader from Utah named Cara was able to cut back on Metformin. She shared her transformation with me: “I have lost 32 pounds since last June. My blood sugar numbers have gone down and my A1C is now 5.4, well within normal range. My diabetes counselor has halved my Metformin dose.” Trisha was also on Metformin. She wrote to me saying that: “My bloodwork has improved dramatically. My triglycerides went from 109 to 42. My fasting glucose dropped to 91. My insulin was at 19, and now it is at 5. I no longer take Metformin…I lost 70 pounds. I went from a size 20 to a size 6 or 8.” And then there’s Hilda’s story. Her fasting glucose went from 169 (high) to 94 (normal). This is what she wrote: “I have shed 40 pounds so far. My blood sugar dropped from 169 to 94. It's important though, to stay away from the unhealthy choices and eat fruits or vegetables, or another complex carbohydrate. You want to avoid overcooking your pasta if you have diabetes. When your pasta is overcooked, it loses its form and releases glucose easier, which will elevate your blood sugar. You should aim to cook the pasta until it is fit to eat, but do not cook it anymore than that. Diabetes can strike you no matter who you are. What's important now is that you take the steps necessary to prevent it from getting worse if you have the disease. Once those complications arise from diabetes, there is no turning back. Work toward your ultimate health by using the tips above.

Vitamin B12 deficiency or hypocobalaminemia typically features a low blood level of vitamin B12 however functional B12 deficiency can occur at any serum level; with or without anaemia and/or macrocytosis. The deficiency is common to all age groups and is sometimes diagnosed late due to the lack of a gold standard assay and its complex aetiology. Neuropsychiatric symptoms can precede hematologic signs and are often the presenting manifestation of B12 deficiency. B12 deficiency can cause permanent damage to nervous tissue if left untreated longer than 6 months. B12 assays may be vulnerable to interference resulting in normal values despite severe B12 deficiency. The standard CBLA B12 test Vitamin B12 itself was discovered through investigation of pernicious anemia, which is an autoimmune disease that destroys parietal cells in the stomach that secrete intrinsic factor. Pernicious anemia and b12 deficiency, if left untreated, can be fatal. Once identified, however, the blood level can be raised very easily but the nerve deterioration can continue if the medication is not of the requisite dosage. It cannot be cured and ongoing treatment is required. Humans obtain almost all of their vitamin B12 from dietary means. Pernicious anemia is usually the result of insufficient secretion of intrinsic factor within the stomach. Other more subtle types of vitamin B12 deficiency have been elucidated, including the biochemical effects, over the course of time in significant numbers. This video targeted to blind users. Malnutrition can affect every function of the human body, from the cells to the most complex body functions, including: immune response; wound healing; muscle strength including respiratory muscles renal capacity and depletion leading to water and electrolyte disturbances thermoregulation and menstruation. In addition, malnutrition can lead to vitamin and other deficiencies and to inactivity, which in turn may pre-dispose to other problems, such as pressure sores. Unintentional weight loss can be the characteristic leading to diagnosis of diseases such as cancer and type 1 diabetes. In the UK, up to 5% of the general population is underweight, but more than 10% of those with lung or gastrointestinal diseases and who have recently had surgery. According to data in the UK using the Malnutrition Universal Screening Tool 'MUST', which incorporates unintentional weight loss, more than 10% of the population over the age of 65 is at risk of malnutrition. A high proportion 10-60% of hospital patients are also at risk, along with a similar proportion in care homes.
