Most fatigue problems and adrenal insufficiency come from issues with the adrenal glands. About 80% of the population deals with this common problem. There are several warning signs that indicate you may have adrenal fatigue. If you struggle with fatigue, are stressed, anxious, have trouble with concentration, poor memory, thyroid issues, or gained mysterious weight, you may have adrenal fatigue. There are three steps you will want to take to get rid of adrenal fatigue for good. The first starts with your diet. Foods to get out of your diet are caffeine, sugar, and hydrogenated oils. Foods that are high in vitamin B12 and magnesium are going to support your adrenal glands and blood sugar levels, so you will want to add these foods into your diet. Foods like coconut oil, coconut milk, coconut, olives, olive oil, raw dairy products, grass-fed butter, organic meats, loads of vegetables, and seaweed are all crucial to your diet as well. Secondly, you will want to support your adrenals by taking supplements like adaptogenic herbs (such as ashwagandha, holy basil, and licorice root), which will help your body adapt and deal with stress. Additionally, a vitamin B complex, magnesium, vitamin D, selenium will support the healing of your adrenals. Lastly, you should focus on lowering your stress levels. Try getting 8-10 hours of sleep a night, reflect and address your stressors, add fun activities into your routine, and exercise. B5 is needed to support enzymes for energy metabolism from carbs, protein and especially fat. When you are in keto-adaptation, you need B5. Vitamin B5 helps support the production of melatonin (sleep hormone), acetylcholine to help you feel awake during the day and REM sleep at night and in the production of cortisol (an adrenal hormone). If you are deficient in B5, the main symptom will be fatigue, however, it also may be inflammation, stress and insomnia. Typically B5 is in our foods, but if your gut flora, the friendly bacteria is incomplete, there will be less B-vitamins made. Your gut flora also need vitamin D to function and low D3 will less the microorganisms that are needed to make B5 leading to a deficiency. Today we are going to talk about the importance of Vitamin B5 on Keto and Intermittent Fasting Plan. The name of the vitamins is Pantothenic Acid and it is a cofactor of energy metabolism specifically for the enzymes that help you breakdown fat. When you are converting from sugar burning to ketosis by burning fat, you need vitamin B5 big time. The mitochondria generate energy in your body. Many illness including cancer start with a breakdown of the mitochondria. Fixing the mitochondria will then fix your energy so you're not fatigued or tired. When you go through keto fatigue, you may need to take various B vitamins (B5) and potassium but you could also be tired because your mitochondria need support. Antioxidants can protect the oxidation from free radicals from radiation, chemicals, etc. Cruciferous vegetables, omega 3 fatty acids and certain trace minerals all aid in the repair process and are called antioxidants. It could be CoEnzyme Q10, vitamin C, vitamin E, selenium magnesium, etc. are examples. The main point is to get you to start increasing your quality of food, especially vegetables which includes these antioxidants from the phytonutrients to improve things. I recommend combining kale, parsley, and beet tops in a shake to increase the health of your mitochondria. Intermittent fasting and keto together can also help boost your mitochondria. Cortisol is fine and dandy, it does what it's supposed to do; it elevates our blood pressure, and it gets us prepared for that fight or flight response, that adrenaline response, that noradrenaline response. What happens when your adrenal glands stop working effectively? If you've ever woken up in the morning and feel like you just needed a cup coffee, like you just, coffee is what's going to pull you out of that slump, well, that's what it feels like to have adrenal fatigue. So, let's dive in to what you can do. The first one is what I call an adrenal cocktail. This is one of my favorites that I will tell you as someone that has worked in a corporate setting, and also as an entrepreneur myself I know exactly what it's like to slave a lot of hours and beat yourself up all the way to the point of exhaustion. So, I've used this cocktail specifically when I was going through a period of stress. And what you're going to do is you're going to take about four ounces of orange juice. Now, with that four ounces of orange juice you're going to take a quarter teaspoon of what's called cream or tartar. Now, cream of tartar, you may have used it in cooking, you've seen it on the shelves before and nobody ever really knows what to do with it. Now, there's one more thing you're going to add to that cocktail. You're going to add the Himalayan pink salt. The reason you're going to add the Himalayan pink salt is because when you have adrenal fatigue, what happens is your body starts excreting a lot of the natural sodium that you need through your urine. So, when your adrenals are taxed, your body is less efficient at modulating the potassium, the sodium, and the magnesium that it needs to function. So, by adding Himalayan pink salt, you take some of the stress off of the adrenal gland, off of the kidneys, and give them a chance to recover a little bit. Now, the important thing is that you have this adrenal cocktail first thing in the morning. You see, your cortisol levels are already at their highest in the morning, so if you can combat them with this adrenal cocktail, you're going to get a lot more benefit first thing so your body is receptive to it than you would, say later in the day. In the fast paced world we live in, this is something many are searching for.. and in attempt to support and repair their adrenals, many spend hundreds to thousands of dollars on natural health products. Here at HealYourAdrenalFatigue.com (HYAF.CA), we are big proponents of a holistic approach to recovery. The truth is that though in some cases a major trauma can fatigue the adrenals very quickly, for the majority, the path to burnout has been a slow and steady build over a longer period of time. Of course, we each have a different story, but my point is that when it comes to adrenal recovery-- there is no magic pill and it can take a while for things to come back into balance. THERE IS NO MAGIC PILL. Even though there is no quick fix, supplements can be a wonderful way to help support and nourish a depleted body. They can be a helpful tool to incorporate into your holistic recovery plan. Today, I'm excited to share with you some supplement tips and tricks to optimize their effects and also, to highlight some of the common mistakes I see occurring all the time with our clients in practice. MISTAKE #1: ABSORPTION IS HINDERED BY GUT HEALTH ISSUES I see this all the time, people with all sorts of adrenal fatigue symptoms taking various supplements in tablet, capsule or soft gel form. I'm not saying that this in itself is a bad thing, but many AF sufferers struggle with the integrity of their intestinal health, hence all the digestive issues we experience. To maximize the bang for your buck, you want to make sure that you're able to breakdown, absorb and metabolize the supplements you are taking. Makes sense right? RECOMMENDATION: ACKNOWLEDGE GUT HEALTH SITUATION AND START THERE FIRST When considering starting a supplement plan, first check-in with your gut health. How has your digestion/elimination been lately? If you suspect this needs attention, then I recommend starting with some gut health focused supplements and dietary tweaks first. Examples: Have a glass of lemon water before meals Focus on chewing food very well to take stress of the digestive process Supplementing L-Glutamine Powder (5 grams mixed with a glass of water before bed) to help with repair of the intestinal lining Digestive Enzymes (take with each meal to help with breakdown and absorption) Try taking a combination powder supplement that helps restore gastrointestinal integrity such as this one. If you are anxious to add some sort of adrenal support to the mix, you could start lightly with some ashawaghanda root powder, which you can add to smoothies, chia puddings, elixirs and more. Repleting low vitamin B12 is best done through sublingual or intramuscular​ injections. 2. Adrenal support - Most thyroid patients also have issues with cortisol dysregulation. If you have advanced adrenal fatigue most patients do better on adrenal glandulars. For more mild disease consider using adrenal adaptogens. If your cortisol is elevated consider using phosphatidylserine. 3. Zinc - Low levels of zinc can cause issues with your skin and issue with hair growth. Adding zinc boosts immune function, T4 to T3 conversion and acts as an anti-inflammatory. Make sure to supplement with zinc bound to picolinic acid. 4. Iron - This is what I consider a "Goldilocks" nutrient in that you don't want TOO much or TOO little. Unfortunately, most doctors look for iron deficiency anemia and don't necessarily jus treat iron deficiency unless anemia accompanies it. Use these optimal levels to supplement with iron. 5. Magnesium - Hypothyroidism alters magnesium and low levels of magnesium can lead to issues like depression, anxiety and other changes like muscle cramps or restless leg syndrome. Replace low levels with magnesium glycinate, magnesium citrate if you have constipation or magnsium threonate if you have neurological issues. 6. Selenium - This nutrient is involved in the thyroid conversion process. Not only that but supplementing has been shown to reduce TPO antibodies and boost the immune system. In addition, using iodine with selenium can help reduce negative side effects. 7. Probiotics - Up to 20% of thyroid conversion happens in the gut and inflammation can reduce this number. Hypothyroidism sets up the gut for imbalances that lead to inflammation. Using probiotics can help improve your GI function. 8. Digestive enzymes - Hypothyroidism leads to low stomach acid which can predispose patients to malabsorption of certain nutrients. Using enzymes can help digest your food, increase nutrient absorption and if taken in between meals may promote the breakdown of immune complexes. 9. Iodine - If used correctly iodine can be helpful in boosting thyroid function. A deficiency in these nutrients can lead to certain health complications that may impact you on a day-to-day basis. This is certainly true for those individuals who suffer from iron deficiency, and are not getting adequate levels of this mineral. Iron deficiency is very common around the world, and is one of the most widespread nutrient deficiencies. When our bodies don’t have enough iron, this can lead to health complications since iron is important to get enough oxygen throughout our body. Iron is also used to make hemoglobin and impacts the red blood cells in our bodies. Lets discuss some other signs and symptoms of iron deficiency. 1. First, one of the most common signs of iron deficiency is fatigue and lack of energy. These fatigue feelings are prevalent even after getting a good nights sleep. This is because iron deficiency may cause less oxygen to reach your tissues, as mentioned previously. When there is this lack of oxygen, our bodies can be deprived of important energy to fuel us during our busy day. Not only will you feel fatigued and tired, but iron deficiency can also bring on symptoms of irritability, weakness and an inability to focus like you once did. 2. Another common iron deficiency sign or symptom is an increase in the paleness of your skin color. As mentioned previously, a deficiency in this nutrient can negatively affect hemoglobin levels in your body. Hemoglobin is responsible for giving your blood its reddish color, which provides your skin with a more rosy hue. Low levels of hemoglobin can affect this, and leave your skin looking more pale. Not just skin tone is affected from this. It can also make your gums, lips and even the bottom of your eyelids less red as well. 3. It is also common for those individuals with iron deficiency to suffer from headaches and head pain. This is because when your are iron deficient, your body will work to prioritize getting important oxygen to your brain, before it will distribute it to the rest of your bodily tissues. Even still, those with an iron deficiency will still get less oxygen in their bodies than it normally would. This lack of oxygen can cause arteries in the brain to swell, resulting in unwanted headaches and pain. 4. Iron deficiency can also negatively affect your hair. This is especially true when this deficiency progresses into iron deficiency anemia, since it can lead to hair loss in both men and women. Again, due to the bodies lack of sufficient levels of oxygen, your body will supply this oxygen to support the most vital functions of the body, which generally does not include keeping the hair healthy, strong and intact. Not only is hair loss possible, but the overall look of your hair can decrease, while becoming brittle and weak. 5. Lastly, iron deficiency can lead to increased feelings of anxiousness and worry more often. Decreased oxygen in the body, along with low levels of iron, can negatively affect your nervous system and increase anxiety. As well, low iron levels can cause your heart to race, which can increase feelings of fight-or-flight. These anxious feelings can come on even when there is nothing particularly to cause you increased anxiousness or stress. Please note, all of the above signs and symptoms should be discussed with your medical practitioner in order to determine their direct cause and and their best treatment for you. As well, you should also discuss your iron levels with your doctor, and adequate intake levels to support your health.
