Dr. Berg talks about the importance of vitamin B5 (pantothenic acid) on a keto and intermittent fasting plan. B5 is needed to support enzymes for energy metabolism from carbs, protein and especially fat. When you are in keto-adaptation, you need B5. Vitamin B5 helps support the production of melatonin (sleep hormone), acetylcholine to help you feel awake during the day and REM sleep at night and in the production of cortisol (an adrenal hormone). If you are deficient in B5, the main symptom will be fatigue, however, it also may be inflammation, stress and insomnia. Typically B5 is in our foods, but if your gut flora, the friendly bacteria is incomplete, there will be less B-vitamins made. Your gut flora also need vitamin D to function and low D3 will less the microorganisms that are needed to make B5 leading to a deficiency. Today we are going to talk about the importance of Vitamin B5 on Keto and Intermittent Fasting Plan. The name of the vitamins is Pantothenic Acid and it is a cofactor of energy metabolism specifically for the enzymes that help you breakdown fat. When you are converting from sugar burning to ketosis by burning fat, you need vitamin B5 big time. The Greek word for this vitamin is “Pantothen” which means “from all quarters” indicating that it is very easy to get from all your foods. Most fatigue problems and adrenal insufficiency come from issues with the adrenal glands. About 80% of the population deals with this common problem. There are several warning signs that indicate you may have adrenal fatigue. If you struggle with fatigue, are stressed, anxious, have trouble with concentration, poor memory, thyroid issues, or gained mysterious weight, you may have adrenal fatigue. There are three steps you will want to take to get rid of adrenal fatigue for good. The first starts with your diet. Foods to get out of your diet are caffeine, sugar, and hydrogenated oils. Foods that are high in vitamin B12 and magnesium are going to support your adrenal glands and blood sugar levels, so you will want to add these foods into your diet. Foods like coconut oil, coconut milk, coconut, olives, olive oil, raw dairy products, grass-fed butter, organic meats, loads of vegetables, and seaweed are all crucial to your diet as well. Cortisol is fine and dandy, it does what it's supposed to do; it elevates our blood pressure, and it gets us prepared for that fight or flight response, that adrenaline response, that noradrenaline response. What happens when your adrenal glands stop working effectively? If you've ever woken up in the morning and feel like you just needed a cup coffee, like you just, coffee is what's going to pull you out of that slump, well, that's what it feels like to have adrenal fatigue. So, let's dive in to what you can do. The first one is what I call an adrenal cocktail. This is one of my favorites that I will tell you as someone that has worked in a corporate setting, and also as an entrepreneur myself I know exactly what it's like to slave a lot of hours and beat yourself up all the way to the point of exhaustion. So, I've used this cocktail specifically when I was going through a period of stress. And what you're going to do is you're going to take about four ounces of orange juice. Now, with that four ounces of orange juice you're going to take a quarter teaspoon of what's called cream or tartar. Now, cream of tartar, you may have used it in cooking, you've seen it on the shelves before and nobody ever really knows what to do with it. Now, there's one more thing you're going to add to that cocktail. You're going to add the Himalayan pink salt. The reason you're going to add the Himalayan pink salt is because when you have adrenal fatigue, what happens is your body starts excreting a lot of the natural sodium that you need through your urine. So, when your adrenals are taxed, your body is less efficient at modulating the potassium, the sodium, and the magnesium that it needs to function. So, by adding Himalayan pink salt, you take some of the stress off of the adrenal gland, off of the kidneys, and give them a chance to recover a little bit. Now, the important thing is that you have this adrenal cocktail first thing in the morning. You see, your cortisol levels are already at their highest in the morning, so if you can combat them with this adrenal cocktail, you're going to get a lot more benefit first thing so your body is receptive to it than you would, say later in the day. In this video, I cover the exact choices I make when it comes to the supplements I use to help me build muscle and stay lean year round. From the vitamins and minerals I take to the workout protein powders and formulas, everything I take in a day is covered and explained. For me, my morning starts with my essential fatty acids. I take both an omega-6 fatty acid in the form of evening primrose oil, as well as a high grade pharmaceutical omega-3 fish oil. The primrose is something I take because I tend to eat a very clean diet almost devoid of the highly processed foods that commonly are in abundance in the average diet. That combined with the fact that I carry a low body fat percentage year round, tends to make my essential omega-6’s that much more essential. I also have Reynaud’s, which is a form of impaired circulation to the hands and feet, that primrose oil has been shown to be helpful in treating. The omega-3’s are taken once in the morning, and again at lunch and at dinner. The grade of the oils is of prime importance when choosing an omega-3. Like prescription grade lovaza, Dr. C’s Omega-3’s are an incredibly potent form of essential fatty acids that have been shown to not only promote overall health and well being but also speed up muscle recovery by helping you recover from muscle inflammation. I take 1500mg of vitamin C, 1000 iu of vitamin E, CoQ10 and green tea extract to meet these needs here. As I point out in the video, I do get adequate levels of both C and E in y diet, however I still take these as an insurance policy and investment in my own health. Just be sure that you don’t take too much vitamin E as it is a fat soluble vitamin that can be taken in excess and not easily removed from the body. Green tea extract provides additional blood sugar stabilizing effects via it’s impact on insulin sensitivity and therefore finds it’s way into my daily supplement regime every morning. Each of the above vitamins are taken once with breakfast as described in the video. Next I take the ultimate insurance policy, a multivitamin. I believe again that while we tend to get the majority of our major vitamins from food, we do not necessarily address all of our micronutrient needs (especially if we tend to follow somewhat restrictive eating plans or styles) so I feel more comfortable taking a multi as a backup. One of the most important areas of late for me has been joint recovery supplementation.
