Medications That Cause Weight Gain—And How You Can Fight Back https://youtu.be/Lui2Eb3DItU When your doctor puts you on a prescription medication, reading the list of potential side effects can be daunting. While it may be tempting to ignore that fine print completely—after all, the benefits of being on the medicine will likely outweigh the possible negatives—experts agree it's important to know what you might face. Here are 6 types of medications that tend to cause weight gain, and what to do to try to avoid this side effect. 1) Antidepressants Selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs)—such as Prozac, Zoloft, and Paxil—are some of the biggest weight-gain offenders. Why? SSRIs work by blocking a receptor in the brain that reabsorbs serotonin, which makes more of this "feel-good" chemical available to send messages between nerve cells. While that has a positive effect on mood, it also can affect appetite. What to do: Talk to your doctor about going on an antidepressant that's known to cause the least amount of weight gain. Bupropion (brand name, Wellbutrin) is a good option and may actually prompt weight loss—a nice perk. 2) Birth control Some contraceptives have been shown to cause weight gain, and the birth control shot (Depo-Provera) is chief among them. Other forms of birth control can also cause weight gain, though this is often due to water retention. What to do: The good news is that you have plenty of options when it comes to birth control. Oftentimes, that low-dose estrogen pills or IUDs that don't have hormones have no effect on weight gain. 3) Beta blockers and angiotensin-receptor blockers 4) Steroids 5) Antihistamines 6) Migraine-prevention meds 3 Foods That Could Be Making Your Joints Hurt https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zKLCFz6tc4I 3 Simple Ingredients Strengthen The Immune System And Defend Against Bad bacteria And Viruses https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6zzeta5jDas 5 Bedtime Beverages That Can Help You Lose Weight https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zudKZ5Oyu3Y 5 Best Types Of Breakfasts For Weight Loss https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sSscTGJmI5o 5 High Calorie Foods You Should Never Eat Before Going To Bed https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vHWFiNrXJhc 5 Super Foods For Healthy Heart https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RbRWk3ZPNwc 7 Best Superfoods for Weight Loss https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p-rZxs43i74 subscribe: https://goo.gl/kl04k8 facebook: https://goo.gl/DW2Y2z twitter: https://goo.gl/ycgKkF attention: The materials and the information contained on this channel are provided for general and educational purposes only and do not constitute any legal, medical or other professional advice on any subject matter. I was recently prescribed Lisinopril for high blood pressure. I had a terrible side effect with a bad dry cough. The cough was 24/7. It can persist for weeks even if you stop taking Lisinopril. Stay away from this medicine if possible and ask your doctor for an alternative.

What percentage of hospitalizations do you think are caused by medication issues: 10% maybe 25%? Believe it or not 40%! That's almost half of all hospitalizations which could potentially be avoided! Let's look at just a couple of common pitfalls. Generic Versus Name Brand: Lynda has a history of high blood pressure and her doctor prescribed metoprolol 50 mg twice daily. She went into the hospital for gall bladder surgery and was discharged home with a prescription for Lopressor 50 mg twice daily. Upon returning home, she resumed her metoprolol dose and began taking Lopressor as well. What she did not realize is that metoprolol is the generic version of Lopressor which means she was suddenly taking a double dose of her blood pressure medication. She was back in the hospital only days later because of a fall due to low blood pressure. Solution: Anytime a new medication is prescribed be sure to inform your provider of ALL medications you are currently taking and make sure there are no conflicts or overlapping meds. Don't forget to mention over the counter meds and vitamins too! Timing: If a medication is prescribed more than once per day, the amount of time between doses is very important. Upon returning home from the hospital, the second time, Lynda was now only taking metoprolol twice daily so she thought she was on the right track. She would take her second dose with her supper at 5:00. Her next dose would not be until she woke up the next morning around 8:00. This meant that there were 15 hours between doses! It is no surprise that he was waking up each morning with a headache and high blood pressure. After a particularly stressful morning, she decided she would go to the emergency room. Solution: Make sure to space your medications as evenly apart as possible so there are not big gaps between doses. By simply moving her last dose to bedtime instead of with supper, Lynda was able to wake up feeling great! In Lynda's case, the cost of simple medication errors really added up when you calculate the stress anxiety and financial impact of two avoidable hospitalizations. QUESTION NUMBER 1: The 33-year-old hypertensive client mentions that she thinks she is pregnant. Upon reviewing the client’s list of medications, the nurse takes note of which of medications that can be contraindicated in pregnancy? Select all that apply A. Lisinopril (Prinivil) B. Amlodipine (Norvasc) C. Metoprolol (Lopressor) D. Irbesartan (Avapro) E. Methyldopa (Aldomet) F. Simvastatin (Zocor) It is very important for women to review their medication list with their obstetrician as soon as she discovers that she is pregnant. Women should not use Prinivil if they are pregnant. Studies have proven that it could cause harm to the unborn baby. You might see Norvasc ordered for your pregnant patient. Her doctor may prescribe it when the benefit outweighs the risks. Animal studies have failed to reveal evidence of teratogenicity or fetal toxicity, however there are no controlled studies done on women. Human studies have been done on pregnant women and findings are that Norvasc Metoprolol readily crosses the placenta, but, no teratogenic effects have been reported. The data of its use during pregnancy has no controls. It may be prescribed when the benefit outweighs the risk.as there is no controlled data in human pregnancy. Avapro is in category D by the FDA. Some studies have proved increased incidence of early fetal resorptions and a decrease in live births. This drug acts directly on the renin-angiotensin system and can cause fetal and neonatal morbidity and death when administered to pregnant women so is considered contraindicated. You may find Norvasc ordered for your pregnant patient when the benefits outweigh the risk. It does pass the placenta and it occasionally causes mild hypotension in neonates of treated mothers. However, it has been safely used to treat hypertension during pregnancy and many doctors consider using it as the drug of choice for their pregnant hypertensive patients. The use of zocor during pregnancy is contraindicated. This drug is in the US FDA pregnancy categor X since studies in animals or humans have demonstrated fetal abnormalities. So, the risks involved in using Zocor during pregnancy outweigh the potential benefits. Answer: Ans.: A, D, F are contraindicated in pregnancy. Always look for phrases like “the benefits outweigh the risks” (meaning it may be prescribed) and “’the risk outweighs the benefit”; (meaning it should not be prescribed) and always closely check all drugs ordered for pregnant and lactating women.

Learn important information on Lisinopril at http://www.lisinopril.us/ Lisinopril is a medication that is generally used for high blood pressure and congestive heart failure. It can also be prescribed after a heart attack. It comes from a group of drugs called ace inhibitors. It is usually taken once a day and can be taken with or without food. If you are using this medication you should keep a daily log of your blood pressure. Take this to your doctor, so they can review this information and adjust your medication accordingly. If you are just beginning to use this medication, be careful when you wake up in the morning. Don't get up out of bed to quickly, you may find yourself getting dizzy and could faint. Get up slowly and in steps, this will allow your body to adjust. The main side effect of this medication is dizziness. This is caused by hypotension, which means that your blood pressure is too low. If you find yourself becoming dizzy, contact your doctor so they can adjust your medication. You could experience nausea, vomiting and even diarrhea, when you begin using lisinopril. These symptoms are not uncommon, as your body adjusts to the new medication. If they persist, you should contact your physician. Some of the potential side effects of this medication are an increase in potassium. Supplements that have potassium in them should be avoided, unless recommended by your doctor. If your potassium levels become too high, it can cause arrhythmia. Read the labels of all the foods that you eat and look for potassium. For example, some salt substitutes use potassium and that could be problematic. If you are taking this medication and you become pregnant, you should switch to another blood pressure medication immediately. The use of this medication in the second or third trimester can damage or kill your unborn child. See your doctor and have them find a new medication for your high blood pressure. A rare, but serious side effect of this mediation is angioedema. This reaction can happen at any time, even after years of successfully taking lisinopril. You can recognize this reaction by a buildup of fluid in your face, throat and lips. It could be life threatening. If this should happen, call 911 or immediately go to an emergency room. This reaction is quite rare; however anyone using this medication should be aware of this reaction, in case it should happen to them. This information is purely for educational purposes only. Do not make any changes to your medication without consulting your physician. For more information on lisinopril, go to www.lisinopril.us http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LpICMP9ps9g

Don't let this title fool you. This problem not only effects the elderly, but anyone young or old, who takes these chemical cocktails that are handed like sweets. The advice is to go to your GP (who gave you the cocktail in the first place) so that they can review your medication. Now consider the GP's bonus for each drug prescribed and ask yourself if your GP is the right person to do this re-evaluation. Combinations of common prescription drugs used to treat routine illnesses conditions such as heart disease, inflammation, pain, depression and allergies are speeding up dementia and even death in many elderly patients. The report, from Dundee University, analysed the records of almost 140,000 patients who were at risk of suffering bad reactions to drugs. They found about one in seven, more than 19,000 people, had been prescribed drugs which could harm them. Well-known brands of hay fever tablets, painkillers and sleeping pills pose a previously unknown threat to people's health when taken together, British scientists claim. The drugs, including common allergy treatments Piriton and Zantac, as well as Seroxat, an anti-depressant, are thought to be used by half of the 10 million over-65s in Britain. Many of the drugs, when taken in combination, were found to more than treble an elderly patient's chance of dying within two years. Common bladder medications, heart drugs, eye drops and asthma treatments were also among those found to pose a risk. The most dangerous included the antihistamines chlorphenamine (used in the brand Piriton) and promethazine (used in Phenergan), the anti-depressant paroxetine (used in Seroxat) and the incontinence drug oxybutynin (used in Ditropan). The heartburn drug ranitidine (used in Zantac), beta blocker Atenolol, the painkiller codeine and some eye drops were among the drugs in the mildest category. Low-risk drugs were graded one point while high-risk drugs were graded three. The study found that patients who took a combination of drugs that added up to four points or more — such as a high-risk antihistamine combined with low-risk eye drops — had a 20 per cent chance of dying within two years, compared with just seven per cent for over-65s who did not take anything. original video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=07YqYACgBRI BBC article: http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/health-13880553 Telegraph: http://www.telegraph.co.uk/health/healthnews/8594677/Fatal-cocktail-of-common-drugs-putting-elderly-at-risk.html Daily Mail: http://www.dailymail.co.uk/health/article-206506/Drugs-danger-care-homes.html
