Candlelight Vigil for Safe RN Staffing at Terence Cardinal Cooke Health Care Center New York City == Community members and the registered nurses of Terence Cardinal Cooke Medical Center (TCC) held a candlelight vigil on Wednesday, Nov. 5, from 6:30 to 8 p.m. to protest proposed cuts in nursing positions. The vigil was held outside the hospital on Central Park East (Fifth Avenue) between 105th and 106th Streets. The facility is planning on eliminating numerous RN positions, leaving very fragile patients with fewer skilled nurses to care for them. TCC plans to replace the RNs with LPNs, who by law cannot assess the condition of patients, develop and adjust nursing care plans, administer certain treatments and medications, or function independently of an RN or other authorized professional. Many TCC patients require the level of care that only a registered nurse can provide, Christina Terranova, RN, New York State Nurses Association (NYSNA) nursing representative We are concerned that this could be the first phase in a long-term plan to replace RNs with LPNs, to the danger of the patients we serve. TCC is a long-term care facility treating patients with Alzheimers, Parkinsons Disease, AIDS, and Huntingtons Disease; and also children and adults with severe developmental disabilities. Saint Thomas Health hosted a free healthcare clinic in McMinnville, Tenn. as part of its commitment to serve the poor and vulnerable in Middle Tennessee. More than 350 residents in and around Warren County showed up to receive care. Saint Thomas Health has hosted more than 30 free healthcare clinics over the years, but this is the first one in Warren County. The event, which was open to the public, was at Warren County High School on 199 Pioneer Lane, Saturday, June 10 from 8am-2pm (see pictures below). Saint Thomas Health, a part of Ascension, the nation’s largest Catholic and non-profit health system, partnered with locally-based agencies to provide medical, dental and vision care for low-income uninsured or underinsured individuals. “It’s a blessing for us to be able to give and we hope a blessing for the patients to have access to care and access to community resources and clinics to receive ongoing care,” said Karen Springer, president and CEO, Saint Thomas Health. A Day of Hope, Health and Healing consisted of more than 200 volunteers from Saint Thomas Health, including physicians, nurse practitioners, nurses, pharmacists, chaplains, senior leadership and other hospital staff, providing healthcare screenings and medical care for those most in need. Pharmacy services, including select prescription medications, were provided by the Dispensary of Hope. Dental services (on-site fillings and extractions) were offered by Hope Smiles, a non-profit organization. Other services included free primary and specialty healthcare services, such as mammograms, vision services, foot and wound care, and behavioral medicine. “It’s a part of who we are and we’ve been called to help those who are poor and vulnerable and when you look at those coming in for care today, they are so appreciative,” said Gordon Ferguson, president of Saint Thomas River Park, Saint Thomas Stones River, Saint Thomas DeKalb and Saint Thomas Highlands. “This is really the hands and feet of our faith-based ministry in action in the community with all of us together helping those who need it most,” said Kathy Ferrell, Manager, Community Health and Benefit, Saint Thomas Rutherford and the Regional Hospitals. The Ascension Medical Mission at Home is part of a national effort by Ascension and its caregivers to host similar events across the country. To date, Medical Mission at Home events have been held in Tennessee, Washington D.C., New York, Alabama, Florida, Connecticut, Indiana and Texas, and plans to expand to other markets in the coming months to meet individual and community health needs. www.sthealth.com/medicalmission www.sthealthbeat.com

Seattle Children's Hospital filed suit against Washington State's Office of the Insurance Commissioner this week, after Obamacare implementation caused the hospital to be cut from four of the six insurance plans offered by the new Washington Health Benefit Exchange. As millions lose their insurance nation wide and are forced into plans with significantly higher premiums, the reality of rationed care, initially denied by adamant supporters of the bill, has now hit the country's most vulnerable, with doctors at Seattle Children's Hospital speaking out. "There becomes a point when if you start denying access to care, that you can hurt children and children's health and that's what we believe is at risk here," said Dr. Sandy Melzer, the hospital's chief strategy officer and senior vice president. Although the hospital was originally included in many of the state's commercial market health plans, Group Health Cooperative and Community Health Plan of Washington will now be the only providers including Seattle Children's Hospital. According to the lawsuit filed in King County Superior Court, the legal obligation to provide access to "essential community providers" has been breached. Struggling Washington families, especially those among the 49.7 million American's in poverty, whose children currently receive care from the hospital, fear they will no longer be able to see their doctor once they are forced into one of the five insurance plans that excludes Seattle Children's. "The notion that a major insurance plan is going to exclude us from their network is truly precedent-setting and represents a new level of degradation in children's access to care," Melzer told the Seattle Times.

STORIES FROM THE HEART is a weekly series on the PIX11 News at 6 presented by Fidelis Care. Go to PIX11.com/Heart to submit your story of someone who has impacted your life and why you want to say thank you -- from one heart to another. ----- Sister Margaret Smyth is a welcomed face at St. John the Evangelist in Riverhead. She gets food to families who need it. "It’s much more of a challenge if you don’t have access to insurance," she said while speaking to a woman. "God gave the gift of getting the Fidelis insurance." She also gets people medical attention with the help of Fidelis Care. "Fidelis Care provides healthcare to more than 1.3 million people in New York and we have programs for children all the way through folks with Medicare," Lori Vavrinec, Fidelis Care Marketing Director. "Our focus has always been on finding people the care that they need in a caring and compassionate way. We're really mission-based company so our focus is really on the individual, taking the time to sit down with them, understand what their needs are and finding a plan that works best for them." Lori Vavrinec is the Fidelis Care Marketing Director and we caught up with her in one of their community offices in Queens. "Its all about being in the community, we have offices throughout New York, in fact we have 16 offices throughout New York state and each office is staffed with representatives that speak the language that are predominant in that community." "One of our biggest things is health and we get a lot of immigrants and immigrants back in their countries had little access to healthcare," Sister Margaret Smyth said. "It takes time to build trust and you build trust when you're able to relate to the person so to be able to come here and meet with representatives from Fidleis who can speak to people in their own language creates an immediate bonding." And why they can be found in so many communities...? "We really want to be able to talk to the people in a language that they understand and we want to be able to connect them to resources in the community to help them and we really focus in on the individual regardless of age or income," Vavrinec explained. "We want to make sure everyone is treated in a caring compassionate way, and that really is the mission."

ALBANY -- A controversial provision of the Affordable Care Act is on hold -- at least for now. Today would have been the day some religious organizations were required to offer free contraception coverage to employees. But a Supreme Court justice put a halt on it -- after receiving a request from an order of nuns in Colorado. At the eleventh hour -- the nation's highest court bought a little more time for faith-based employers fighting against something they fundamentally disagreed with. Some of them would have had to offer birth control for employees under provisions of the Affordable Care Act.No government mandate should force, should compel, religious employers to violate their own mission statements, said Kathy Gallagher, Director of Pro-Life Activities for the New York State Catholic Conference. The Conference calls the stay on the requirement, made by Supreme Court justice Sonia Sotomayor, good, and decided with common sense. If the law went through today as planned, and employers didn't comply, they could have been forced to pay thousands of dollars in fines. This is a grave violation of religious liberty here, Gallagher said. The First Amendment -- the first and foremost right of American citizens is being violated by this mandate. But Family Planning Advocates of New York State takes the position that an organization's business is not the private health of its workers. To allow bosses to say what healthcare coverage you're entitled to under your health insurance is just the wrong direction, said Tracey Brooks, President of the organization.Brooks says birth control medication is more than preventing pregnancy. It's a basic healthcare that women rely on for many reasons, whether it's to be able to economically support their families to the greatest, finish education, plan their pregnancies or utilize it for a medical purpose, she said. The impact may be far-reaching away from Catholic organizations as well, one that the catholic conference says some business owners in the Capital Region are considering.Gallagher said, does a private employer forfeit their religious beliefs when they decide to open up a shop in America? It's a fundamental question.Hobby Lobby stores are testing that aspect of the Affordable Care Act. The company is arguing against providing birth control to employees because it conflicts with company owners beliefs. The Justice Department has until Friday to respond to Justice Sotomayor's decision.

Venerable Fulton John Sheen (born Peter John Sheen, May 8, 1895 – December 9, 1979) was an American bishop (later archbishop) of the Catholic Church known for his preaching and especially his work on television and radio. The cause for his canonization as a saint was officially opened in 2002. In June 2012, Pope Benedict XVI officially recognized a decree from the Congregation for the Causes of Saints stating that he lived a life of "heroic virtues" – a major step towards beatification – so he is now referred to as "Venerable." Ordained a priest of the Diocese of Peoria in 1919, Sheen quickly became a renowned theologian, earning the Cardinal Mercier Prize for International Philosophy in 1923. He went on to teach theology and philosophy at the Catholic University of America as well as acting as a parish priest before being appointed Auxiliary Bishop of the Archdiocese of New York in 1951. He held this position until 1966 when he was made the Bishop of Rochester from October 21, 1966, to October 6, 1969, when he resigned and was made the Archbishop of the titular see of Newport, Wales. For 20 years as Father Sheen, later Monsignor, he hosted the night-time radio program The Catholic Hour on NBC (1930–1950) before moving to television and presenting Life Is Worth Living (1951–1957). Sheen's final presenting role was on the syndicated The Fulton Sheen Program (1961–1968) with a format very similar to that of the earlier Life is Worth Living show. For this work, Sheen twice won an Emmy Award for Most Outstanding Television Personality, and was featured on the cover of Time Magazine. Starting in 2009, his shows were being re-broadcast on the EWTN and the Trinity Broadcasting Network's Church Channel cable networks. Due to his contribution to televised preaching Sheen is often referred to as one of the first televangelists. The Catholic Church, also known as the Roman Catholic Church, is the largest Christian church, with more than 1.29 billion members worldwide. As one of the oldest religious institutions in the world, it has played a prominent role in the history and development of Western civilisation. Headed by the Bishop of Rome, known as the Pope, the church's doctrines are summarised in the Nicene Creed. Its central administration, the Holy See, is in the Vatican City, an enclave within Rome, Italy. The Catholic Church teaches that it is the One, Holy, Catholic and Apostolic church founded by Jesus Christ,[note 1] that its bishops are the successors of Christ's apostles, and that the Pope is the successor to Saint Peter to whom primacy was conferred by Jesus Christ. It maintains that it practises the original Christian faith, reserving infallibility, passed down by sacred tradition. The Latin Church, the Eastern Catholic Churches, and institutes such as mendicant orders and enclosed monastic orders reflect a variety of theological and spiritual emphases in the Church. Of its seven sacraments the Eucharist is the principal one, celebrated liturgically in the Mass. The church teaches that through consecration by a priest the sacrificial bread and wine become the body and blood of Christ. The Virgin Mary is venerated in the Catholic Church as Mother of God and Queen of Heaven, honoured in dogmas and devotions. Its teaching includes sanctification through faith and evangelisation of the Gospel and Catholic social teaching, which emphasises support for the sick, the poor, and the afflicted through the corporal and spiritual works of mercy. The Catholic Church is the largest non-government provider of education and health care in the world.

Recorded February 27, 2018 What do Catholics think of Pope Francis’s changes to the Catholic Church? Ross Douthat explores that question in his new book, To Change the Church: Pope Francis and the Future of Catholicism. Douthat joins Peter Robinson on Uncommon Knowledge to discuss his new book, his thoughts and critiques of Pope Francis, and the changing conception of divorce under Pope Francis’s ambiguous teachings. Douthat and Robinson spend a large portion of the episode discussing the Catholic teachings surrounding marriage, divorce, and communion. They examine the history of Catholicism and divorce, going back so far as to understand the lessons of the New Testament on divorce and how those lessons were radically conservative for the time. They talk about how problematic the terms “conservative” and “liberal” are when used in the context of the Church as the political leanings do not necessarily correlate with moral leanings of religion. They go on to discuss the future of the Catholic Church under Pope Francis and how the Bishops can handle all of the changes. About the Guest Ross Douthat is an author and New York Times Op-Ed columnist. He received his bachelor’s degree from Harvard University in 2002. He is the author of several books including, Privilege, Grand New Party, Bad Religion, and most recently, To Change the Church. Sherry Glied, Dean of New York University's Robert F Wagner Graduate School of Public Service, and former assistant secretary for planning and evaluation at the Department of Health and Human Services, explains some of the issues in the Obamacare exchanges and how the Trump administration may have contributed to what they call a "death spiral." Following is a transcript of the video. DR. SHERRY GLIED: When you think about whether Obamacare is collapsing, I think you really have to sort of think about the current situation and the counterfactual. Would it naturally collapse? Or is it collapsing in part because the administration is causing it to collapse? Premiums last year – that is, coming into this year's cycle – increased quite a lot. There are a couple of things the administration has done that may be contributing to weak performances of the exchanges. The first thing is that almost the first thing that President Trump did when he entered office is to put out an executive order saying that they would not be strenuously enforcing the individual mandate. So, that likely led to some reduction in signups. They also turned off the marketing spigot a little bit earlier this year than had been done in prior years. But, the most important concern, I think, in terms of the stability and future of these markets is that they are supposed to have a stream of money come in to pay for reductions in the cost sharing for low-income subscribers. So, the way that the Affordable Care Act is set up, if you're a low-income person and you buy a health plan, that health plan gets an extra subsidy so that your deductibles, your cost sharing, what you have to pay when you go to the doctor, isn't too high. There's been an argument between the Republican Congress and President Obama, when he was still in office, about whether the money that was flowing under that piece of the legislation had correctly followed Congressional rules. But, President Trump has not been clear about whether he will let those payments flow or not. If the payments don't flow, insurers will be responsible for giving better coverage to low-income people, but they won't be subsidized for that. And they're building that into their premiums, and raising them accordingly. -------------------------------------------------- Follow BI Video on Twitter: http://bit.ly/1oS68Zs Follow BI on Facebook: http://bit.ly/1W9Lk0n Read more: http://www.businessinsider.com/ -------------------------------------------------- Business Insider is the fastest growing business news site in the US. The Obama regime recently decreed through the recently passed Obamacare (national healthcare legislation) that Catholic institutions would to have to pay for birth control, contraceptives, and other medical procedures that run against Catholic doctrine, Catholic teaching. What happened to "separation of church and state?" To liberals and Democrats that means religion should stay out of the state's business however the state is allowed to insert itself into church business. What is more amazing is the Catholic Church's response to this unconstitutional infringement by President Obama (Democrat). After a national uproar President Obama changed the decree, decreeing the institutions would not have to pay however the health insurance companies will have to pay for the services. Huh? Is it constitutional for a President to tell institutions what services they must provide and pay for? No. Is it constitutional for a President to tell insurance companies what services they must pay for? No. The president has no such authority and violated the Constitution and his oath of office. Is it impeachment time? What a joke, not with this spineless Congress. The president's supporters are saying his decrees fall under Obamacare as "preventative care." Meaning having a baby is a disease to these mindless drones. All Hail his Royal Highness President Barack Obama who did not and does not need to be constrained by the United States Constitution. - Also in the 2008 presidential election, 54% of Catholics who voted, voted for President Barack Obama -- Democrat, pro-abortionist. - Daniel Hannon a British member of the European Parliament warns the USA at a CPAC meeting in Washington, DC: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k2OOtQs0A8k Paul A. Saint Thomas Health, a part of Ascension, the nation’s largest Catholic and non-profit health system, partnered with more than 30 locally-based agencies to provide care for more than 300 low-income uninsured or underinsured individuals in Rutherford County. A Day of Hope, Health and Healing consisted of more than 200 volunteers from Saint Thomas Health, including physicians, nurse practitioners, nurses, pharmacists, chaplains, senior leadership and other hospital staff, providing healthcare screenings and medical care for those most in need. Pharmacy services, including select prescription medications were provided by the Dispensary of Hope. Dental services (on-site fillings and extractions) were offered by Hope Smiles, a non-profit organization. Other services included free primary and specialty healthcare services, such as mammograms, vision services, foot and wound care, and behavioral medicine. “Our hope is one day we won’t have to host a medical mission ever again, but until everyone has healthcare, we’ll be here for them,” said Saint Thomas Health President & CEO Karen Springer. “Having all the right resources here for those who need it most and them leaving here with a smile on their face because we’ve been able to help them in some way is truly a gift.” Since the first Ascension Medical Mission at Home in 2008 for Saint Thomas Health, the event has provided more than 20,000 patient encounters for Middle Tennessee families. The Ascension Medical Mission at Home is part of a national effort by Ascension and its caregivers to host similar events across the country. AAPS Capitol Hill Briefing: March 27, 2014 Currently there is a lot of discussion regarding health care exchanges and access to insurance. However, insurance is not care. Even if the exchanges are eventually fixed, they cannot assure access to care. Well before Obamacare the government had forced its way into the patient-physician relationship. Now, the government is looking to dominate the relationship. AAPS members have long fought this invasion and taken their stand for patients' freedom of choice. We invite you to listen to three doctors and hear about their daily interactions with the government from three different points of view: a teaching hospital, a family practice (and charity clinic), and an internal medicine practice that is fully independent of all government programs and third party payers. The patient-physician relationship needs to be a top priority no matter what side of the aisle you are on.
