It sounds like the title of a disaster movie, but a "Hothouse Earth" is what a group of climate scientists say we could be heading for - even if current carbon reduction targets are met. Researchers from Sweden and Australia predict that in centuries to come global temperatures could increase by up to 5 degrees on the preindustrial average and this would lead to a drastic sea level rise of anything between 10 and 60 metres. Johan Rockström, a professor in environmental sciences at Stockholm University and co-author of the new report, and Tessa Khan, co-director of the Climate Litigation Network, debate. Research and the Sustainable Development Goals Thursday 26 April 2018, 11.00-12.30 DIIS ∙ Danish Institute for International Studies See programme and links below... The Paris climate agreement has been heralded as a major step forward in the attempt to mitigate climate changes. While it has stimulated action around the world, business as usual seems to be very widespread not to speak of the much-discussed American withdrawal from the agreement. Yet, time is of upmost importance if we listen to the scientists. Timely reductions of CO2 emissions will not only be easier and cheaper to undertake compared to later ones. They are also necessary to avoid setting irreversible climate changes in motion that have unpredictable consequences. Professor Kevin Anderson is a central academic voice, who has gained widespread attention by pointing to the potential dangers of tech solutions and highlighting the need for substantial behavioural change in the West. He presents very concrete suggestions to the questions of what to do and where to prioritise action. The seminar is the first part of a whole-day event on Research and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). In addition to its important subject, the seminar will highlight how research may contribute to the achievement of the SDGs. A few of the ways research can make a contribution, is by providing solid data for political decision-making, exploring and suggesting new initiatives directing the world towards the SDGs, and criticising widespread practices and policies inhibiting the SDGs. The second part of the Research and the Sustainable Development Goals event will be in Danish with the caption Forskning og verdensmålene, please follow the link for more information and sign up. A walk-around lunch of sandwiches will be served in between the two seminars. Speakers Kevin Anderson, Professor of Energy & Climate Change, Tyndall Centre for Climate Change Research Lars Thykier, Managing Director, Association of Danish Travel Agents and Tour Operators Peter Birch Sørensen, Professor and Chairman, The Danish Council on Climate Change Kirsten Brosbøl, MP (Soc.) and Chairman, the cross-party network on the SDGs in parliament Lars Engberg-Pedersen, Senior Researcher, DIIS Programme 0:01-03:10 Welcome, Lars Engberg-Pedersen 03:14-44:28 Climate change, CO2 budgets and the need to change behaviour in the West, Kevin Anderson 44:29-1:08:12 Comments by the panellists - Lars Thykier, Peter Birch Sørensen, Kirsten Brosbøl 1:08:12-1:36:29 Q&A with the audience

"Desertification is a fancy word for land that is turning to desert," begins Allan Savory in this quietly powerful talk. And terrifyingly, it's happening to about two-thirds of the world's grasslands, accelerating climate change and causing traditional grazing societies to descend into social chaos. Savory has devoted his life to stopping it. He now believes -- and his work so far shows -- that a surprising factor can protect grasslands and even reclaim degraded land that was once desert. NASA is sounding the alarms about climate change. Again. Will anyone in power listen this time? Cenk Uygur and Ana Kasparian, hosts of The Young Turks, break it down. Tell us what you think in the comment section below. http://tytnetwork.com/join "The planet is warming at a pace not experienced within the past 1,000 years, at least, making it “very unlikely” that the world will stay within a crucial temperature limit agreed by nations just last year, according to Nasa’s top climate scientist. This year has already seen scorching heat around the world, with the average global temperature peaking at 1.38C above levels experienced in the 19th century, perilously close to the 1.5C limit agreed in the landmark Paris climate accord. July was the warmest month since modern record keeping began in 1880, with each month since October 2015 setting a new high mark for heat. “In the last 30 years we’ve really moved into exceptional territory,” Gavin Schmidt, director of Nasa’s Goddard Institute for Space Studies, said. “It’s unprecedented in 1,000 years. There’s no period that has the trend seen in the 20th century in terms of the inclination (of temperatures).””* Read more here: https://www.theguardian.com/environment/2016/aug/30/nasa-climate-change-warning-earth-temperature-warming?CMP=share_btn_fb Hosts: Cenk Uygur, Ana Kasparian Cast: Cenk Uygur, Ana Kasparian *** The Largest Online News Show in the World. DemocracyNow.org - As the U.N. Climate Change Conference opened in Durban last week, the Least Developed Countries group and the Alliance of Small Island States presented proposals saying a climate deal that covers all countries must be reached within a year. The drafts received support from the European Union, but not from other developed countries — including the United States — or from larger developing countries like India, China and Brazil. The 48-country Least Developed Countries bloc (LDCs) includes drought-prone states such as Ethiopia and Mali, countries with vulnerable coastal zones including Bangladesh and Tanzania, and countries especially vulnerable to melting glaciers as a result of global warming, like Himalayan mountain states Bhutan and Nepal. The Alliance of Small Island States or AOSIS has 39 members including many Pacific and Caribbean islands, some of which are very low-lying and heavily impacted by sea level rise. Democracy Now! speaks to Dessima Williams, chair of the Alliance of Small Island States, and to Pa Ousman Jarju, chair of the Least Developed Countries group. "The importance of this COP is that the agreements that have been reached in 2007 have not yet been fulfilled," says Williams. "The most import negotiation that must be concluded here, if we are to remain true to what we did in the past, is the second commitment of the Kyoto Protocol, which encompasses rules and levels of greenhouse gas reduction for the major emitters historically ... The impacts on our countries and our Island States in particular, is intolerable. For water supply, food, health, the sea level rising will swallow up more of our islands." How will global warming affect New England in the 21st century and how is the region preparing for the coming changes? Global climate models all predict that the Northeastern United States may be particularly vulnerable to both short- and long-term effects of global warming. Some of these effects such as higher average temperature and sea level, along with more intense and more frequent storms and droughts are already being felt in the New England area. As we learned from Hurricane Irene, Superstorm Sandy and winter storm Nemo, isolated weather extremes riding on gradual trends can be extraordinarily damaging. A 2011 report by the American Security Project estimated that failure to mitigate or plan for what is likely to become the new normal could result in the loss of 100,000 jobs and $22 billion from the regional economy between 2010 and 2050. While coarse global models can indicate the overall direction of change, much more detailed regional climate, economic and land-use models are needed to assess how global warming will affect New England, county by county, in the 21st century and to create prudent and effective policies and plans for dealing with the coming changes.

The Hi-5 Action Plan is based on 5 high priorty methods of climate change mitigation; 1 stopping deforestation, 2 use of solar power, 3 geoengineering, 4 carbon capture and storage, and 5 reforestation. I also included some facts about global warming following the outline of my climate change action plan. The world will be watching on September 21, as world leaders from governments, civil society, business and industry converge in New York City for the United Nations Emergency Climate Change Summit. As they gather, so too will millions of people in cities all over the world in an international call for stronger climate action. This global day of action starts with you, right here in Australia. Watch this video now to find out how you can help make history. Get involved: http://www.getup.org.au/global-climate-mobilisation [VARIOUS SPEAKERS] When I talk about power, the fact that having as many people involved as citizens, being able to act as citizens, able to act power. The world as a whole is now trying to figure out how to deal with a very serious threat to the future of human civilization. I have been urging world leaders to agree on the legal binding treaty by 2015. What we need in this fight are citizens who will stand up and speak up and compel us to do what this moment demands. Climate action now! Climate action now! SAM MCLEAN On the 21st of September, world leaders will gather in New York for the global United Nations emergency climate change summit. As these leaders gather, so will millions of people across the world in a massive global day of marches calling for action on climate change before it’s too late. It’s more than likely that Tony Abbott won’t show up at the UN’s emergency climate change summit, so we need to show up instead. If we’re successful, instead of reporting that the Australian leader didn’t show up, global media will report that Australian’s did in their thousands. On September 21st we can show with actions, not words, that Australian’s want a clean energy future, that we want climate action to be on the agenda at the G20 that we’ll be hosting in November. So here’s the plan. On September 21st tens of thousands of Australian's will gather across the country in localized grassroots events and the main events, the people’s march, in Melbourne. We’ll join millions of people across the planet in a global, synchronized day of people power. But that’s just the beginning. We’ll also launch an ongoing campaign that puts real climate action back into our homes, our communities, and our parliament. KELSEY COOKE It all starts right here in Victoria. First with a huge march, but then with what could be a political game changer. We’ve already hired field organisers to help GetUp members make a huge difference in the upcoming state election. They’ll be knocking on thousands of doors in marginal seats taking this critical conversation directly to the homes of the voters who matter, and we won’t stop there. We’ll continue these key conversations all around the country, before the New South Wales and Queensland elections and right up until the next Federal election. SAM MCLEAN Then GetUp members will put our money where our mouths are, working together to switch our homes and our businesses from energy companies who invest in dirty coal and switch to cleaner, cheaper, better energy. With your help, we can kickstart all of this on September 21st. We can show power, build power and reclaim power in the fight for climate action. KELSEY COOKE This is an ambitious plan, but it has the ability to actually shift the conversation, ignite action and get our country back on track. That’s why I’m asking you to chip in to make this happen. Your donation will not only help fund marches, rallies and actions around the country, it will also fund our ongoing, on the ground efforts. We’ll not only need a stage, P.A. system, insurance, promotional materials, first aid and entertainment for the main event in Melbourne, we’ll also need t-shirts for volunteers, clipboards, organisers paid to train our best volunteers, venues for key trainings and meetings, and people working the phones at key moments before and after the state election. Your donation will go towards all these critical hard costs and more. SAM MCLEAN Can you chip in $40 right now to make this plan happen? [VARIOUS SPEAKERS] This is about our community. This is about our children. We cannot leave a matter as important as climate change to the politicians. We must stand up and be counted. We need bodies, we need creativity, we need spirit. A new analysis by the Centre for Science and Environment has indicated that India is warming at a much faster rate than thought previously. The analysis looks at temperature trends in the country – both annual and seasonal – from 1901 till recent years. And it finds that the country has been getting warmer continuously, consistently and rapidly. CSE researchers have plotted this rise in temperature on an animated spiral – the first such

NASA cancels the launch of a satellite designed to reveal details about climate change, after a failure in the launch pad water flow. Full Story: NASA on Tuesday cancelled the launch of a satellite, which was expected to reveal details about where carbon dioxide, a greenhouse gas tied to climate change, is being released into the Earth's atmosphere on a global scale. The countdown was stopped at 46 seconds, because of a failure in the launch pad water flow, NASA said on Twitter. The two-year, $465 million project, known as the Orbiting Carbon Observatory, or OCO, will also be able to pinpoint where the planet's forests and ocean are reabsorbing atmospheric carbon, a cycle that is key to Earth's temperature. More than 50 years of measurements show that about half the amount of carbon dioxide put into the atmosphere - by natural processes and human activities - end up being reabsorbed. The proportion has remained fairly constant even as the total amount of atmospheric carbon has climbed from concentrations of 315 parts per million in the 1950s to 400 parts per million today, studies by the U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration and the Scripps Institution of Oceanography show. The observatory will eventually be positioned 438 miles above the planet and inclined so that it passes over the same point on Earth at the same time every 16 days, giving scientists insight into how levels of carbon dioxide change over weeks, months and years. Because the observatory's target areas will be small - about 1 square mile - scientists expect to be able to pinpoint top carbon emitters, though monitoring is not among the mission's goals. NASA hoped to have OCO flying in 2009, but a launch accident claimed the satellite. Congress agreed to fund a replacement, OCO-2, which was scheduled for launch from Vandenberg Air Force Base in California at 5:56 a.m. EDT on Tuesday aboard a United Launch Alliance Delta 2 rocket. The satellite was built by Orbital Sciences Corp. For more news and videos visit ☛ http://ntd.tv Follow us on Twitter ☛ http://twitter.com/NTDTelevision Add us on Facebook ☛ http://on.fb.me/s5KV2C

Agriculture in most parts in Africa including Cameroon is regulated by rainfall. But climate change today has made it difficult for farmers to predict rainfall as it was the case before. Some Farmers in Southwest Cameroon say they were deceived into planting in February when early rains fell. But the sun that followed thereafter caused their seedlings to get rot and now they are forced to plant for the second time. They say climate change is threatening food security. A report by Environmental Journalist, Regina Fonjia Leke first aired on canal 2 English Television.
