With the Cook Islands facing cyclones that are projected to be windier and bring more intense rainfall, government agencies are seeking to better understand the risks as well as plan for how communities can best adapt to the changes. More intense cyclones are just one of the likely consequences of climate change with temperatures, sea levels and ocean acidification all projected to significantly increase within 20 years. The Cook Islands worked with the Australian Government's Pacific Adaptation Strategy Assistance Program (PASAP) to: • Review its climate change and disaster risk management activities • Map likely areas at most risk from climate change • Undertake assessments of vulnerability and adaptation options in outer islands • Develop a Joint National Action Plan for Climate Change and Disaster Risk Reduction • Develop a whole of government climate change policy This video details the country's activities with the Pacific Adaptation Strategy Assistance Program to adapt to climate change. "We felt that climate change was best placed within the Prime Minister's Office because it wasn't an environment issue; it was actually a development issue. So it made sense to bring it under the national framework for development." - Elizabeth Wright-Koteka, Office of the Prime Minister, Cook Islands Government More information can be found at http://climatechange.gov.au/climate-change/grants/international-climate-change-adaptation-initiative/cook-islands-plan-more-intense-cyclones-under-climate-change

A straightforward explanation of Climate Change: the heat from human emissions is roughly equal to exploding 400,000 Hiroshima atomic bombs every day. Historically, every time carbon dioxide levels increase in Earth's atmosphere, the average surface temperature increases, ice melts, and the seas rise. "Desertification is a fancy word for land that is turning to desert," begins Allan Savory in this quietly powerful talk. And terrifyingly, it's happening to about two-thirds of the world's grasslands, accelerating climate change and causing traditional grazing societies to descend into social chaos. Savory has devoted his life to stopping it. He now believes -- and his work so far shows -- that a surprising factor can protect grasslands and even reclaim degraded land that was once desert. NASA is sounding the alarms about climate change. Again. Will anyone in power listen this time? Cenk Uygur and Ana Kasparian, hosts of The Young Turks, break it down. Tell us what you think in the comment section below. http://tytnetwork.com/join "The planet is warming at a pace not experienced within the past 1,000 years, at least, making it “very unlikely” that the world will stay within a crucial temperature limit agreed by nations just last year, according to Nasa’s top climate scientist. This year has already seen scorching heat around the world, with the average global temperature peaking at 1.38C above levels experienced in the 19th century, perilously close to the 1.5C limit agreed in the landmark Paris climate accord. July was the warmest month since modern record keeping began in 1880, with each month since October 2015 setting a new high mark for heat. “In the last 30 years we’ve really moved into exceptional territory,” Gavin Schmidt, director of Nasa’s Goddard Institute for Space Studies, said. “It’s unprecedented in 1,000 years. There’s no period that has the trend seen in the 20th century in terms of the inclination (of temperatures).””* Read more here: https://www.theguardian.com/environment/2016/aug/30/nasa-climate-change-warning-earth-temperature-warming?CMP=share_btn_fb Hosts: Cenk Uygur, Ana Kasparian Cast: Cenk Uygur, Ana Kasparian *** The Largest Online News Show in the World. The world will be watching on September 21, as world leaders from governments, civil society, business and industry converge in New York City for the United Nations Emergency Climate Change Summit. As they gather, so too will millions of people in cities all over the world in an international call for stronger climate action. This global day of action starts with you, right here in Australia. Watch this video now to find out how you can help make history. Get involved: http://www.getup.org.au/global-climate-mobilisation [VARIOUS SPEAKERS] When I talk about power, the fact that having as many people involved as citizens, being able to act as citizens, able to act power. The world as a whole is now trying to figure out how to deal with a very serious threat to the future of human civilization. I have been urging world leaders to agree on the legal binding treaty by 2015. What we need in this fight are citizens who will stand up and speak up and compel us to do what this moment demands. Climate action now! Climate action now! SAM MCLEAN On the 21st of September, world leaders will gather in New York for the global United Nations emergency climate change summit. As these leaders gather, so will millions of people across the world in a massive global day of marches calling for action on climate change before it’s too late. It’s more than likely that Tony Abbott won’t show up at the UN’s emergency climate change summit, so we need to show up instead. If we’re successful, instead of reporting that the Australian leader didn’t show up, global media will report that Australian’s did in their thousands. On September 21st we can show with actions, not words, that Australian’s want a clean energy future, that we want climate action to be on the agenda at the G20 that we’ll be hosting in November. So here’s the plan. On September 21st tens of thousands of Australian's will gather across the country in localized grassroots events and the main events, the people’s march, in Melbourne. We’ll join millions of people across the planet in a global, synchronized day of people power. But that’s just the beginning. We’ll also launch an ongoing campaign that puts real climate action back into our homes, our communities, and our parliament. KELSEY COOKE It all starts right here in Victoria. First with a huge march, but then with what could be a political game changer. We’ve already hired field organisers to help GetUp members make a huge difference in the upcoming state election. They’ll be knocking on thousands of doors in marginal seats taking this critical conversation directly to the homes of the voters who matter, and we won’t stop there. We’ll continue these key conversations all around the country, before the New South Wales and Queensland elections and right up until the next Federal election. SAM MCLEAN Then GetUp members will put our money where our mouths are, working together to switch our homes and our businesses from energy companies who invest in dirty coal and switch to cleaner, cheaper, better energy. With your help, we can kickstart all of this on September 21st. We can show power, build power and reclaim power in the fight for climate action. KELSEY COOKE This is an ambitious plan, but it has the ability to actually shift the conversation, ignite action and get our country back on track. That’s why I’m asking you to chip in to make this happen. Your donation will not only help fund marches, rallies and actions around the country, it will also fund our ongoing, on the ground efforts. We’ll not only need a stage, P.A. system, insurance, promotional materials, first aid and entertainment for the main event in Melbourne, we’ll also need t-shirts for volunteers, clipboards, organisers paid to train our best volunteers, venues for key trainings and meetings, and people working the phones at key moments before and after the state election. Your donation will go towards all these critical hard costs and more. SAM MCLEAN Can you chip in $40 right now to make this plan happen? [VARIOUS SPEAKERS] This is about our community. This is about our children. We cannot leave a matter as important as climate change to the politicians. We must stand up and be counted. We need bodies, we need creativity, we need spirit. A new Chamber of Commerce study says one in 20 businesses plan to leave Ontario or just shut down, because power prices are too high. Ezra Levant of TheRebel.media says this is no surprise. Energy prices have already driven out big names like Kellog's and Heinz. Why? Because raising energy prices for the next 20 years is the official policy of Kathleen Wynne's Liberal provincial government, with its expensive "green" energy subsidies and schemes. Fracking has brought failed manufacturing giant Pennsylvania back from the brink, with 200,000 new jobs in that sector alone. They now produce more natural gas than Texas! And without spending a dime of public money. Why isn't Ontario following that model instead? Joe Lassiter is a deep thinker and straight talker focused on developing clean, secure and carbon-neutral supplies of reliable, low-cost energy. His analysis of the world's energy realities puts a powerful lens on the stubbornly touchy issue of nuclear power, including new designs for plants that can compete economically with fossil fuels. We have the potential to make nuclear safer and cheaper than it's been in the past, Lassiter says. Now we have to make the choice to pursue it. FOR CLEAN VERSION SEE STORY NUMBER: 2024079 A day after over 100,000 people marched to warn that climate change is destroying the Earth, more than 1,000 activists blocked parts of Broadway in Manhattan's financial district in a sit-in to protest what they see as corporate and economic institutions' role in the climate crisis. Monday's demonstration was planned as a more confrontational sequel to Sunday's march, with many participants Monday deliberately risking arrest by obstructing traffic in the heart of the nation's financial capital. Over 100 people, including a person wearing a white polar bear suit, were arrested Monday night after they refused to leave the intersection of Broad and Wall streets, police said. Most of the arrests were for disorderly conduct. Earlier, the protest took a tense turn as the demonstrators tried to push past police barricades at Wall Street, sparking a brief clash with officers. In an attempt to quell the chaos, police dispersed pepper spray among the crowd, obstructing the sight of some, including Associated Press freelance photographer John Minchillo. The organizers of #FloodWallStreet said the sit-in aimed to disrupt business in the financial district by targeting "corporate polluters and those profiting from the fossil fuel industry."The protest took a tense turn when demonstrators, after several hours of sitting and chanting near the bull statue, decided to march up Broadway and onto Wall Street itself. And for today′s top international headlines，... we now turn to Lee Sun－ho at the News Center. Today′s focus： President Obama reveals his Clean Power Plan，... firefighters battle blazes in Northern California，... and U.S. airline companies ban shipments of animal trophies. Sun－ho， let′s start off in Washington.... What were the reactions to Obama′s big speech？ Well， after President Obama announced his plans to tackle climate change，... environmental groups rejoiced， saying this was the first time the U.S. has placed any restrictions on carbon pollution from power plants. But of course... not everyone was happy， as coal lobbyists have threatened to sue the administration， while Republicans said they will do all they can to halt the measures. Our Sohn Jung－in has the details. Glaciers worldwide are melting at a faster rate than ever before. According to a new study by the World Glacier Monitoring Service， glaciers are currently losing between 50 to 100 centimeters of thickness every year. That means they are melting two to three times quicker than the corresponding average recorded during the 20th century. The study，... published on Monday，... is based on data collected from more than 30 countries over the past 120 years. Coincidentally， on the same day the worrying statistics were released， U.S. President Barack Obama unveiled his Clean Power Plan， one of the key pillars of his administration′s plans to tackle man－made climate change. Under the plan， the United States will reduce carbon pollution from power plants by 32 percent from 2005 levels by 2030. Speaking at the White House on Monday， a few months before international climate talks in Paris，... Obama said the world may not be able to reverse global warming if aggressive action to stop it is not taken. Reuters Edit No：1246 － soundbite ″... I′m convinced that no challenge poses a great threat to our future and future generations than a changing climate， and that′s what brings us here today.″ Obama rejected criticism that the plan would cost jobs and squeeze the poor by increasing energy bills. However， his plan is already facing stiff opposition from the Republicans. They′ve announced that they will sue the government immediately， and will ask the courts to put the plan on hold while their legal challenges play out. Sohn Jung－in， Arirang News.

Brazil's Amazon Juma reserve is home to a pioneering scheme. It could play a key role in reducing deforestation emissions and become an example for other nations at the upcoming Copenhagen climate change summit. Families in this tiny settlement are paid about $30 dollars a month to act as guardians of the forest, the only project of its kind in Brazil. The monthly stipend is funded by contributions from the Marriott Hotels chain, Coca Cola and Brazilian bank Bradesco. Amazonas state Governor Eduardo Braga has more than doubled the protected forest in the state since 2003 to an area the size of Kuwait. [Eduardo Braga, Amazonas state Governor]: "What the world needs to understand is that we have done our house cleaning, valued the forest as much as we can, tested good practice and now we need a response or the people will end up pressuring the forest for survival. The program could be expanded to 60,000 families by 2014 or about half the population living in the state's vast forest. In Amazonas, however, not everyone sees Juma as a model to follow. Brazilian critics say it risks making high levels of Amazon deforestation acceptable. Brazil's government this month trumpeted the lowest deforestation rate in two decades, but the 7,000 square km (2,700 sq miles) cut down in the year to August was still equivalent to six New York cities. Despite falling deforestation rates, scientists say the forest is still headed for a "tipping point" as early as mid-century. At that point its possible that climate change could turn large parts of it into savannah.
