And an interesting situation came up: right as the student joined my program, her friend got the surgery. But six months later, here's how it panned out: Her friend lost the 70 pounds she wanted (from the surgery). ... And then gained 100 pounds after (and regretted the $10,000 she spent on it). While my student finally got her pre-pregnancy weight back she hadn't seen in 10 years. Having said that - what really ARE the risks of getting weight loss surgery? In today's video we'll talk about them. Here's What The Researchers Found In the first study, 41 patients (93% were female) were included to assess the effects (in this case, also the side effects) of lap band surgery. Out of the patients here, 76% suffered some kind of complication (infections, leaks, etc) and ten wanted their band removed. But here's what's funny: 5 (12%) maintained their weight, but all the others gained weight. Yes, you read that right. After removal of the band, the mean BMI was 36.7 versus 29.4, so the BMI substantially increased (and 36 is very high for a person). 73% would not agree to gastric banding again, and the researchers concluded that in 66% of cases, this was a failure. I don't know about you, but those stats don't sound too good to me. Study #2: Not Enough Weight Lost? In the second study here, 37 patients had lap band surgery, and then they were followed up on for four years. The devices were removed in 15 (41%) patients some time during that period due to complications. The most common reason for removal was inadequate weight loss in the presence of a functioning band. The primary reasons for removal in others were infection, leakage from the inflatable silicone ring causing inadequate weight loss, or band slippage. Overall, only four patients achieved a body-mass index of less than 35 and/or at least a 50% reduction in excess weight. So in this second study, the most common reason for removal was "not enough weight lost" - including the complications you read here. What's Going On Here? So let's look at the facts: - This stuff isn't necessarily as effective as it's supposed to be - There's a VERY high rate of complications - One study even found that inadequate weight loss was a reason for removing the band early - And 3/4 wouldn't ever do it again or recommend it ... Am I missing something here? I know it's human nature for us to want quick fixes, and there are definitely valid medical reasons for wanting this surgery, but hopefully this'll help some people reconsider. If we focus on a QUICK WIN with no work...usually we LOSE quickly too. And what about my student? Well, you be the judge:

Alegent Creighton Health Weight Management Program http://www.alegentcreighton.com/weightmanagement The day was finally here. Tara Gustin was just hours away from finding her old self; the girl who wasn't consumed with weight...the girl who wasn't consumed with food. "I am really ready this has been a long process and I am very ready," Tara said. Tara Gustin's story is like so many others. She would lose a few pounds only to gain a few more. When a doctor told her she was morbidly obese, Tara decided the years of yo-yo dieting would end with laparoscopic gastric bypass surgery. The Alegent Creighton Health Weight Management Center at Immanuel Medical Center helped her get ready -- mentally and physically - for the surgery. "You have to be mentally prepared for it to be a life changing event. It has to be something you can live with from here on out. I don't expect to have the surgery then go back to eating burgers and French fries...that would be pointless. You have to be ready to give up the things that get you to this point," Tara said. Before Tara is wheeled back for surgery, she thinks about how far she's come -- how long she's wanted to do something about her weight. "I was scared to death yesterday. I think I got past that. Today I am ready. I don't think I've ever been this excited to go into surgery," Tara said. Alegent Creighton Health bariatric surgeon Dr. Tom White performed Tara's surgery. Laparoscopic gastric bypass surgery is where the digestive system is rewired -- reducing a stomach the size of a football to something closer to an egg. The surgery doesn't take long and the patient is home within a couple of days. Tara knows it won't be without pain but she's ready for the transformation. "I'm excited - this is a new beginning - the first day of my new life," Tara said.

I wanted to share a bit about my problem with Oral Fixation and the need to constantly be chewing on something, which has causes issues with food. I also believe it to be due to OCD about food. When I was a child, I ate paper and sucked my thumb, and to this day, I still suck my tongue. I chew gum nearly all day everyday. This caused a weight issue that I still battle today even after surgery.

This is something that I've wanted to do forever, I just hadn't had the courage to do it, but I feel in my heart, someone needs to see this to make a change in their life. I'm not necessarily talking weight wise, I was depressed but mostly I had severe anxiety that even though I was talking with a psychiatrist, wasn't going anywhere. I'm not saying that loosing weight made it go away, in fact, there are still days that I cannot get out of my car and into a grocery store because of my anxiety, and I'm definitely not saying that my method of weight-loss is the right way or only way, all I am trying to get across is that, there is hope and they're ways of getting help. Sometimes we think things will get better on their own without realizing we are only adding fuel to the fire with the time we're letting run. If I can give any advice at all, PLEASE DO NOT DO THIS. I wouldn't wish this on ANYONE. I am in pain every single day. Some days it's tolerable pain, some days I want to knock myself out so I don't feel the pain anymore. Every day is painful. Losing weight is not worth the absolute HELL I am living everyday. Immediately after my surgery in Tijuana, I had to go to San Diego for treatment in the US, with English speaking doctors since no one in Mexico would tell me what was wrong with me. I said I wanted to stay at the clinic, they said I'd be fine at a hotel and took me to a hotel. In the middle of the night, I felt like I was literally dying. I tried calling the doctors several times and no one answered. I called a taxi to take me to the USA border. I crossed over into San Diego and went to the emergency room. They did an X-ray and a CT scan and said, "You have to have surgery immediately. You are leaking stomach content into your abdomen. I'm not going to give you false hope, this could be fatal. You need to call you friends and family before going into surgery just in case." And I had to call my friends, my family, MY SON and tell them all I might not make it out of surgery. After the surgery, I was in the hospital for 2 and a half weeks. I had a nasal tube down my nose to my stomach draining out stomach acid for the first week... I will never forget how that smelled... if I smell anything remotely similar I gag. I missed my son's choir concert, his Halloween, his birthday, lost my job, etc. THIS IS NOT WORTH THE HELL IT HAS CAUSED IN MY LIFE.

We are committed to going above and beyond to provide exceptional patient care and our Bariatric & Metabolic Surgical Services program is designed to do just that. Led by Peter Kwon, M.D., Medical Director of Bariatric & Metabolic Surgical Services, Catskill Regional offers three minimally-invasive weight-loss procedures: Gastric Bypass, Gastric Banding and Sleeve Gastrectomy. In this video today, Peter Kwon, along with Karen McKoy, Program Manager, and Janice Kadan, a patient of CRMC. “I’m Peter Kwon and I’m currently the Medical Director of Bariatric Surgery Services here at Catskill Regional Medical Center. Bariatric surgery is not just about losing weight but it’s also addressing a host of medical conditions that come with severe obesity.” – Peter Kwon, Medical Director, Bariatric & Metabolic Surgical Services “This program is designed for people who have struggled with chronic weight issues. It’s not for the patients that want to lose 15-20 pounds. These are patients that have struggled with being heavy for their whole life. They have often undergone multiple programs, they’ve had a certain degree of success but they haven’t been able to maintain it. They generally struggle with cardiac disease, hypertension, diabetes, sometimes joint pain from their excess weight – and it leads them unable to live to lives that they want. They can’t play with their children. They can’t walk stairs. They can’t go hiking. They can’t enjoy their lives the way that they should be able to.” – Karen McKoy, RN, BSN, Program Manager, Bariatric & Metabolic Surgical Services “I’m Janice and I’m 53 years old and I’m one of the newest patients at Catskill Regional Medical Center – where I was one of the first to have Bariatric Surgery. I decided to go for Bariatric Surgery because I’m in the middle of my life, 53 years old, and I have a few issues with my health like arthritis and pains in the joints and I knew I was because of my weight.” – Janice Kadan, Patient “We’re very pleased to offer all services that the patients will need as they go through their pre-screening process. They are able to see a dietitian and get their weight loss counseling. They are able to see a social worker or psychiatrist who assists with modification of any eating issues that they might have. Then they can have their surgery right here in the hospital. They can recover right in the hospital. They can see us in the office in the hospital for all their post-operative care.” – Karen McKoy “So the patients that enter our program, we try to education them and try to help them make those changes in their diet and lifestyle that will help them in the long term.” - Peter Kwon “I love the team process because they want to help you so much to achieve the goals that I want for myself. Like I said, it’s more like going in to see best friends because they really make you feel special.” – Janice Kadan “We did an entire hospital assessment of ‘are we able to treat the patients that we see in our community appropriately – based on their health care needs?’ ‘Are things the right height? Are things the right width?’ ‘Are they comfortable to be able to get in and out of different pieces of equipment?’ It helps with the recovery to feel like this chair is made comfortable for me. I can get myself in and out of the chair easily.” - Karen McKoy “The patients of Sullivan County have not wanted to travel really outside and so they would like to use Catskill Regional, if they could. So therefore, here we are! To try to bring this service, which is very valuable, closer to home for all the residents of Sullivan County. The most rewarding part of my job is to see people successfully losing the weight, keeping it off, but more importantly than just the weight, is if we’ve helped them get rid of all their diabetes medications, or get rid of their sleep apnea machines, or they could walk now when they couldn’t because of pain in their hips, knees. These are the things that make it worthwhile for us and the field of Bariatric Surgery. To continue to do what we do, and to continue to try to help more people.” – Peter Kwon “It is a team approach and yet it feels personal too. You know, everybody gets to know you and you get to know them, and you really want to shine for them. I would never take back my decision to do this. It was the best decision I’ve made in my life.” Janice Kadan Learn more about the Bariatric Services at Catskill Regional Medical Center, here: www.crmcny.org/bariatrics
