Click here to SUBSCRIBE to the official This Old House YouTube channel: http://www.youtube.com/subscription_center?add_user=thisoldhouse Time: 4 hours Cost: $100 Skill Level: Moderate Tools List for Building a Holiday Toy Box: Miter saw Table saw Router and rabbeting bit Pocket screw jig Drill Clamps Palm sander Jigsaw Brad nailer and compressor Shopping List: 1x4” pine boards 1x8” pine boards ½” plywood birch panels Pocket screws Wood glue 80-100 grit sandpaper Brad nails Steps: 1. Cut the 1x4” boards to a desired rough length using a miter saw. 2. Lay out the boards for the front, back, and bottom of one side. Use the fourth piece to determine the angle for the top of the box. Mark the boards at a desired angle and cut it using the miter saw. 3. Repeat this process for the other side of the box. 4. Cut the stiles and rails for the front of the box at the desired length. 5. Using the table saw, cut dados along the perimeters of the side of the stiles receiving the panel and cut rabbets into the ½” plywood for the sides and front of the box. Keep the panel flush with the backs of the stiles and rails. Be careful to not cut the dados all the way through each board. 6. Cut the panels to size. The ones on the side should be at the same angle as the stiles. 7. Use the router to cut the rabbet on all the panels. 8. Assemble the sides using pocket screws and wood glue. Slide the panels in before securing the fourth stile. 9. Fill the pocket holes using plugs and the wood glue. 10. Sand all the pieces of the toy box. 11. Cut a rabbet using the table saw on the back of the two sides of the toy box. 12. Use the router to add a curve to the front edge of both sides of the box. Sand the sides. 13. Add a curve to the front of the box. Do this by putting a nail at the center of the desired arch, hold a scrap piece of wood tight to the bottom front corners, and trace the curve with a pencil. Cut it out using a jigsaw. 14. Add a cleat to the bottom of the front and sides of the box to hold the bottom of the box in place. 15. Cut a dado in the front, back, and bottom of the box to accept a divider. 16. Assemble the rest of the box using more pocket screws and wood glue. 17. Glue the bottom panel for the box onto the cleat, then secure it with brad nails. 18. Repeat the process for the back of the box. 19. Cut the center divider to width. 20. Slide the center divider into the dados in the front and back of the box. 21. Transfer measurements from the sides of the box to the center divider and cut it parallel to the sides using the jigsaw. The height should be slightly shorter than the side panels by about an inch. 22. Nail the center divider to the back of the box. 23. Cut a top shelf for the box to width and length. Round it with the router and sand. Screw it to the top of the box using pocket screws. http://www.homerepairtutor.com/build-a-big-outdoor-storage-bench/ Do you want a big outdoor storage bench. You'll be able to store seat cushions, toys, tools, and even the kitchen sink with the one in this video. Hi Friend, I'm Jeff from Home Repair Tutor and you'll love this outdoor storage bench because it's easy to build. And spacious!! I built it specifically for my patio seat cushions. You don't need a ton of tools for this project. I do show you how to use a Kreg Jig. It's an awesome little carpentry tool that runs about $39 and can be bought at any home center. You'll also need a circular saw or miter saw and drill or impact driver. The entire outdoor storage bench is made from a 2 x 4 foot sheet of oak plywood and 1 x 4 pieces of pine lumber. Make sure the pine lumber isn't warped since it will make up the sides of the bench. You'll stack the 1 x 4s on top of each other and use pocket holes to attach them. Watch the video for all the details. And add your comments if you think you could improve the design!! I'm all ears and love learning new stuff. http://youtu.be/ov2NvqZ0pgA If you think this video would help a friend feel free to share it http://youtu.be/ov2NvqZ0pgA For tips on home repair & improvement make sure you check out more Home Repair Tutor videos on YouTube. In this video i show how i made this round top toy chest based on how-to videos from "whats up Wayne". I created the box of the chest by simply gluing 1x6 pine boards together. Then i joined the sides and bottom with simple butt joints with screws and glue. The top was made by cutting 1.5" strips of 3/4" pine at 2.5" angles on each side of the board. I created a jig for the top glue up. The entire project was challenging and fun! A neighbor friend of mine asked me to build a simple, plywood blanket chest for their cabin. They planned to paint it so they wanted to use cheap, pine plywood from Home Depot. I used my Festool Domino to join the corners but you could easily do glued and screwed butt joints or long splines instead. Box joints would work really well too if you have a box joint jig that will support pieces this large. The final blanket chest was 60" long, 18" deep, and 26" tall. Happy Veterans Day all!!! This video is about my Toy box build- Fighting Cancer. This toy box is very simple to make and is based on the Plans Steve provided. My video is abbreviated due to loss of much of my footage. Not to worry you can watch both of the other gentlemen videos to see how they are built. I used some re-purposed poplar that I had from an old bunkbed. These were the rails to that bed. I used 1/4 inch MDF for the panels. The woodworkers Steve Ramsey and Mark Spagnuolo are conducting a fund raising event for fighting cancer. The idea is for every toy box that we woodworkers out here build and submit a photo to them they will each donate $5 to Cancer research Institute. They have a lengthy list of corporate sponsors who will donate as well. The information for all of this is below: Marc's video: http://youtu.be/T4yMa3LQKQ0 More info, Marc's plans, and how to submit photos of your toy box: http://bit.ly/1rgck9v All funds raised go to http://www.cancerresearch.org http://www.youtube.com/user/TheChrisPineWorkshop http:/thechrispineworkshop.blogspot.com Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/pages/I-Wish-I-was-Home-Productions/176321852397752 https://www.keek.com/dashboard/content http://www.pinterest.com/christopherpine/woodworking-projects/

This is a blanket chest is going to the same person as the loft bed I made. It can be called a blanket chest, hope chest, or a toy chest. Technically, it is going to be a toy box but I like the name blanket chest more ;) I built the entire frame with half laps and a few dados. The project cost was a few cents under $70. Matt's little boy Luca has so many toys! A toy box has been on the to-do list for us to make for a while. However, we wanted to add something different to the design, so we made the front panel reversible that will have a busy board on the back face. This will mean that everything can be tidied away an hidden when Luca's in bed. We also had Matt's wife (Luca's Mummy) paint a cute quote on the front of the reversible panel. The toy box is made out of pine for the legs and 18mm birch plywood for all the panels. The size is roughly 1m x 0.5m x 0.5m. We used a 900mm piano hinge and 2 x 100N gas springs which adds a soft close feature. Stick around until the end for a blooper! Until it was time to install the hinges and has spring there was no metal used in its construction. It was built from tough lumber bought at the lumber yard in raleigh and worked down to individual slats of wood that were measured, cut, and sanded individually and secured by using wooden dowels and glue. This was my first "big" project and was made for the Downing babies.
