Early Math on Khan Academy: Math begins with counting. It's the most important skill we learn in our early years and becomes the foundation for all other math concepts. Once we can count, we can add, subtract, and measure the world around us. Shortly thereafter, we can learn about place values, plots, graphs, time, money, and shapes. These early math skills are presented in this subject's tutorials in a straightforward, understandable, and (dare we say it) fun way!

Exponents might be the toughest topic in Algebra 1 to teach. Students must balance conceptual understanding with procedural efficiency. Just give them a list of rules and worksheets and students will be okay for a little while, but the retention will be non-existent because they don't understand what exponents are.
In this first lesson we just cover the first two properties of exponents, if the bases are the same you add the exponents, and if a power is raised to a power, you multiply those exponents. But we carefully build the information as to why they are true and provide powerful activities to expose misconceptions early on, before things get complicated.

Addition of integers 7th grade math lesson for students. Integers are a series of positive and negative numbers. When adding such numbers students have to pay attention to the sign that precedes the numbers in the equation. Generally, adding a value to a negative value is like subtracting the negative value from the positive one. However, adding two positive numbers follows the same rules of addition seen this far. For a complete lesson on estimating products and quotients, go to http://www.MathHelp.com - 1000+ online math lessons featuring a personal math teacher inside every lesson! In this lesson, students learn to estimate a product or quotient by first rounding each number to one non-zero digit. For example, to estimate 8,291 x 27, first round 8,291 down to 8,000, and round 27 up to 30, then multiply 8,000 x 30 to get 240,000.

Geometry on Khan Academy: We are surrounded by space. And that space contains lots of things. And these things have shapes. In geometry we are concerned with the nature of these shapes, how we define them, and what they teach us about the world at large--from math to architecture to biology to astronomy (and everything in between). Learning geometry is about more than just taking your medicine ("It's good for you!"), it's at the core of everything that exists--including you. Having said all that, some of the specific topics we'll cover include angles, intersecting lines, right triangles, perimeter, area, volume, circles, triangles, quadrilaterals, analytic geometry, and geometric constructions. Wow. That's a lot. To summarize: it's difficult to imagine any area of math that is more widely used than geometry.

My video lesson plan on Unit Conversion for the Breakthrough Collaborative Summer Program. Displayed below is a mock lesson plan and worksheet for the students.
------------------------------------------------------------
Lesson: Unit Conversions
Level: Grade 6
Duration: 45 minutes
Objectives:
• Students will have the ability to convert units within the metric system
• Students will be able to differentiate between the Metric and English systems
• Students will identify the prefixes for metric units
• Students will think about the many ways in which measuring quantities is part of their daily lives
Materials:
• Worksheets
• White board
• Writing tool
• Calculator
Procedures:
• Begin the lesson by referring to the previous lesson the students had on units. “Who can remember what we defined a unit as?”
• Today we are going to be working on unit conversions, meaning taking the given unit and mathematically make its equivalence to a different type of unit. For example, changing meters to centimeters.
• “Can anybody reminded me of that jingle I left us with at in our last class, regarding the metric system?” (k/h/da/bu/d/c/m)
• Let me show you and example of unit conversion before I get more in depth on this topic. (100km to 1m)
• “Do you see how with the metric system you can easily follow this path?”
• Demonstrate to students how to convert units using white board and visual techniques
• Take a step back and ask students how they think these units and methods of conversion can be used in their everyday lives
• Call on students and get responses
• “I am going to pass out a worksheet now with conversions on it but since we are just beginning this topic I will put you with a partner to work on it with. You may use your calculators”
• Walk around as students are working on the problems and intervene if they appear to be struggling
• Come together as a class and review the problems. Have a student come write out their procedure on the board for each problem
• Review the main ideas, have the students ask questions
• Pass out exit slip for students
Accommodation/Modification: If students are having trouble understanding the process of converting units, take this topic slower and break it down the steps multiple. You might need to do the worksheet together as a class and create take home problems. If one or just a few students are having difficulties, have them come to your table to work on the problems together. Make sure to let them do as much of the work on their own as possible.
Assessment/Evaluation:
This class time and assignment will be based off of participation and effort since it was the students first time converting units. While demonstrating the process and while the students are working, observe their behaviors and work ethics. Grade their worksheets based on effort; did they attempt the problems, did they show their work.
Metric Rap:
“Meter, Liters, Grams are the units, the units.
they show us, they show us how to move it, to move it.
King Henry’s Dark Blue Underwear, underwear,
Definitely contain moss, moss.
Because k, h, da, bu, d, c, m, d, c, m
k, h, da, bu, d, c, d, c, m.”
Name: _______________________________________________________ Date: __________________________
Unit Conversions Worksheet
Directions: Using the provided conversions, answer the questions below. Show your work!
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Metric System = k / h / da / bu / d / c / m
100 / 100 / 10 / 1 / .1 / .01 / .001
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
1. 100km = ________dm
2. 8m = _______mm
3. 5.73 m = _______ km
4. 750km = __________hm
5. 65.50mm = __________m
6. 3.50,000m = __________km
7. 400,250Dm = ___________cm

For a complete lesson on expanded notation, go to http://www.MathHelp.com - 1000+ online math lessons featuring a personal math teacher inside every lesson! In this lesson, students learn to use the place value chart to write numbers in a variety of ways. For example, the number 89,234 can be written as the word name eighty-nine thousand, two hundred thirty-four, or in expanded notation as 8 ten thousands + 9 thousands + 2 hundreds + 3 tens + 4 units. Students also learn to find the value of a given digit in a given number. For example, the digit 5 in the number 1,508,346 means 5 hundred thousands.

In this grade 6 or pre-algebra lesson, we continue our study of expressions, this time writing and simplifying expressions for the area of rectangles. This involves multiplying x times x to get x squared.
(See the first part of the lesson, which covers expressions about length and perimeter, at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4TLMt8-5dqo)
For example, the area of a rectangle with sides 4x and 2x becomes 4x(2x) = 8x^2.
After writing the expression for the area of rectangles when the sides are known, we solve the opposite problem: if the area is given in terms of a variable, how long are the sides? For example, the area of a square is 16s^2. How long is its side?
Next, we solve a multi-step algebraic word problem: The perimeter of a square is 8x. What is its area?
This problem requires us to find the length of side of this square, which is 2x. Then it's easy to find the area by multiplying: 2x(2x) = 4x^2.
The last problem involves a rectangular area composed of two rectangles. We find both its perimeter and area.

In this video we will learn how to simplify algebraic expressions. If you have an expression that has the part of it where we can apply distributive property then we solve that part first.
Once we have applied distributive property on part of expression, then next part will be adding or subtracting like terms.
