A lot of parents have concerns about side effects from steroids. Steroids are present inside all of our bodies but when we use them as a medicine, they can help treat inflammation and swelling, which is a big part of asthma. Steroids come in many different forms, as well as many different doses. When steroids are given by mouth, or through a shot, the dose is a lot higher than what we use when given through an inhaler. An important thing to remember is that the steroids we use in medicine to treat asthma are not the same as anabolic steroids which are used by weight lifters and athletes to make their muscles big and strong. Your child will not develop big muscles by using their inhaler or any of the side effects associated with anabolic steroids. There is a common side effect that can occur if you use inhaled steroids, however. This is called thrush. Thrush is a white coating that can develop inside the mouth or on the tongue. It is very easy to treat if it does occur. However, it is also very easy to prevent. Just make sure that your child brushes their teeth and tongue after they use their inhaler or rinses their mouth. This should be done every time they use their steroid inhaler to help prevent thrush from occurring. Usually when patients have problems with asthma/allergies/sinusitis (especially asthma) the typical conventional response is to give them medications to inhibit their immune system, mainly steroids and prednisone. As a matter of fact, it's the first line treatment that's recommended to treat people with those types of problems. They created Advair (it's a medicine called serevant and prednisone) so you don't necessarily know that there are steroids in that medication. It's a spray that works every twelve hours. What it does is that it dilates your bronchioles, gives you a bunch of steroids that would get systemically absorbed, and over time, you form less of your own steroids (or cortisol) that you would need to fight off allergies. The best way is to get at the cause of the problem, use certain vitamins and nutrients, and you can shut off some of the allergic response, and get people off some of these medications. I was on prednisone - twenty milligrams a day for two and a half years - so I know a lot about prednisone (that was for a type of joint pain and inflammation). The bottom line is: get at the source of the problem, make your body more alkaline/less acidic, and eliminate the foods and chemicals that act as triggers, and you can get people off these medications that cause all sorts of problems down the road. What kinds of problems? Well there are sleep problems. You put someone on steroids, they wind up having insomnia; inability to get REM sleep. They wind up with fatigue; it drops their blood sugar. They wind up with chronic yeast problems. It's immunosuppression. these people wind up getting colds more frequently, needing more and more antibiotics, all of which never gets at the cause of the problem, and then they get stuck on the medicines like I did. There are ways to get at the source of the problem, and pick lower-risk high-gain approaches then pick these steroids that have lots of systemic problems with them; thinning your bone, osteoporosis, and a whole range of other problems. There are many asthma treatment options depending on your child's age and preference. Metered dose inhalers, which are commonly called puffers or inhalers, spray the medicine out so that you can breathe it deep into the lungs. Inhalers deliver medicine very quickly. Inhalers are compact and light so they can be easily taken with you wherever you go. It's very important to use your inhaler the correct way to make sure the medicine gets deposited into the lungs, where it works the best. Incorrect technique can leave some of the particles from the medicine on your tongue or throat, where it won't help at all. A spacer, or holding chamber, is an attachment that should always be used with your inhaler. The spacer holds the medicine in place so you can breathe it in easier. First, remove the cap from the bottom of your inhaler. When you get your new inhaler from the pharmacy, you need to "prime" or "waste" it by spraying the medicine into the air four times. Now, fit your inhaler into the opening at the end of the spacer. Shake the inhaler well for ten seconds. Turn your head to the side and breathe out. Close your mouth around the mouthpiece of the spacer. Push down on the inhaler once. Now the medicine is inside the spacer. Right away, take a slow, deep breath. The goal is to not hear a whistling sound. If you do, this means that you're breathing in too fast. Hold your breath for a count of 10. Now, slowly breathe out. Rinse your mouth out with water or brush teeth after using controller medicines such as inhaled steroids. Many times, the correct dose of your medicine will be to inhale two puffs. If this is what is prescribed for you, then wait one minute after the first puff, and then follow all of the steps again. Remember if you have questions, call your doctor's office, asthma care team or pharmacy. Asthma is a growing concern, especially in athletes. Learn the reasons why athletes have trouble breathing, and what can be done about the problem. Though asthma is a lung symptom it is often not an actual lung cause. Asthma can be a symptom of a variety of causes such as under-functioning adrenal glands, immune system issues, inflammation, poor diet, digestive issues, or emotional stress. Dr. Gangemi explains why it’s important to identify the causes of exercise induced asthma. It’s common to treat the symptoms of exercise induced asthma with corticosteroids like Flovent and Qvar, or an asthma inhaler like Proventil or Albuterol. Other inhaler types include antihistamines, leukotriene modifier inhalers, and anti-inflammatory medications. However, an important problem with asthma medications is that they can further strain the adrenal system. So, as a natural treatment for asthma, it may be important to identify why your body is lacking the natural corticosteroids to begin with. Beyond natural remedies for asthma, Dr. Gangemi is encouraging a more holistic chronic asthma treatment approach. This can provide long-term lasting benefits as an asthma treatment for children, for athletes, or for anyone who needs to take a puff in order to function, play sports, or to exercise.

10 Ways to Treat Asthma 1. Inhalation Corticosteroids These cortisone-like medicines are frequently prescribed by doctors to people struggling with asthma. If they’re used properly, they can significantly reduce the intensity of asthma symptoms, including difficulty breathing and coughing. They’re also designed to help reduce the number and severity of asthma attacks, which can be very dangerous. Of course, inhalation corticosteroids are hardly perfect. According to the Mayo Clinic, corticosteroids won’t stop an asthma attack that has already started – meaning they’re not a great emergency tool. Also, they won’t have a significant impact on asthma symptoms if the patient fails to use them regularly—which in most cases will mean every day (or even several times each day). That can make them problematic for children and people with memory difficulties. 2. Leukotriene Receptor Antagonists Leukotriene receptor antagonists are a non-steroidal oral medication for asthma. Often referred to as LTRAs or anti-inflammatory bronchoconstriction preventors, the Asthma Society of Canada notes that they’re effective because they stop the chemical reaction that can result in significant inflammation of the lungs, thereby making it easier for an asthma patient to breathe. Leukotriene receptor antagonists are rarely the first treatment pursued by doctors following an asthma diagnosis. Typically, physicians will employ an inhaled steroid and, should that fail, may turn to LTRAs. This form of treatment is particularly effective for people who prefer pills over inhalers, which can be difficult to use—particularly for seniors and children. They also have few of the side effects seen with inhaled steroids, though LTRAs are often less effective. 3. Short-Acting Beta Agonists Short-acting beta agonists help reduce tightening of the muscles surrounding the airways by forcing these muscles to relax and widen—resulting in easier breathing for the asthma patient. Currently, there are 2 different kinds of beta agonists on the market: short-acting and long-acting. Short-acting beta agonists can be effective within 5-minutes of being taken, but tend to have an impact for only 4- to 6-hours. Unlike long-acting beta agonists, short-acting beta agonists can be used to have an immediate impact and are ideal for emergencies—like asthma attacks. However, they shouldn’t be used more than once or twice a week 4. Long-Acting Beta Agonists Unlike short-acting beta agonists, Long-acting beta agonists last much longer than 4-to 6-hours—up to 12-hours, in some cases. The American Thoracic Society (ATC) considers long-acting beta agnonists maintenance drugs, which means they must be taken over a longer period in order to be fully effective. Long-acting beta agonists are designed for people with persistent asthma problems—to the point where they are suffering some serious breathing problems on a regular basis and having to use short-acting beta agonists more than a few times each week. Popular long-acting beta agonist products include Advair and Symbicort. Most of these products employ a steroid to help relax the muscles surrounding the airways. 5. Antihistamines Antihistamines can be a useful treatment for asthma. However, it’s important to keep in mind that antihistamines—like Allegra or Benadryl—can come with significant side effects, including drowsiness. In addition, FamilyDoctor.org states that some antihistamines may conflict with other medications, so it’s important every asthma patient consult their doctor before using an antihistamine to treat their condition. Overall, antihistamines are useful when treating infrequent, less intense bouts of asthma. Those people who frequently deal with serious shortness of breath should talk to their physician about a treatment that more directly addresses their condition. 6. Xolair Xolair, which is also known as omalizumab, is an antibody designed to reduce the body’s allergic responses. The drug is most often prescribed to help people deal with severe asthma in adults and children over the age of 12. It won’t help stop an asthma attack and is typically prescribed only after many other medicines have been tried, without success. In other words, Xolair is not for people with mild asthma. In fact, it’s designed for people who have such severe problems with asthma that the condition could be considered life threatening. It’s also important to note that Xolair can have serious side effects. In some cases people have suffered severe allergic reactions right after taking the drug, which is typically injected into the skin and given only once every two to four weeks. Here is Bob getting his meds delivered with the AeroKat. His very first experience with the AeroKat and then again 2 weeks later. You can also see the AeroKat's valve which makes it easy to monitor your cats breathing and ensure proper dosage. Bob started showing signs of asthma in his 7th year. His attacks were mild and bi-weekly, and the vet advised keeping windows shut at night. It was humid where we lived in the Caribbean. His attacks became severe and much more frequent (4 a day) after moving to northern Sweden. Very dry climate there. Initially, he took Prednesol tablets. We have recently begun using Flutide aerosol administered using the AeroKat Chamber. This video was posted only two weeks after beginning with Flutide, but it appears that the side affects are much less than with the tablets. Bob is doing much much better now. ASTHMA OVERVIEW Asthma is a chronic disease involving the airways in the lungs. These airways, or bronchial tubes, allow air to come in and out of the lungs. If you have asthma your airways are always inflamed. They become even more swollen and the muscles around the airways can tighten when something triggers your symptoms. This makes it difficult for air to move in and out of the lungs, causing symptoms such as coughing, wheezing, shortness of breath and/or chest tightness. For many asthma sufferers, timing of these symptoms is closely related to physical activity. And, some otherwise healthy people can develop asthma symptoms only when exercising. This is called exercise-induced bronchoconstriction (EIB), or exercise-induced asthma (EIA). Staying active is an important way to stay healthy, so asthma shouldn't keep you on the sidelines. Your physician can develop a management plan to keep your symptoms under control before, during and after physical activity. People with a family history of allergies or asthma are more prone to developing asthma. Many people with asthma also have allergies. This is called allergic asthma. Occupational asthma is caused by inhaling fumes, gases, dust or other potentially harmful substances while on the job. Childhood asthma impacts millions of children and their families. In fact, the majority of children who develop asthma do so before the age of five. There is no cure for asthma, but once it is properly diagnosed and a treatment plan is in place you will be able to manage your condition, and your quality of life will improve. An allergist / immunologist is the best qualified physician in diagnosing and treating asthma. With the help of your allergist, you can take control of your condition and participate in normal activities. ASTHMA SYMPTOMS & DIAGNOSIS Asthma Symptoms According to the leading experts in asthma, the symptoms of asthma and best treatment for you or your child may be quite different than for someone else with asthma. The most common symptom is wheezing. This is a scratchy or whistling sound when you breathe. Other symptoms include: • Shortness of breath • Chest tightness or pain • Chronic coughing • Trouble sleeping due to coughing or wheezing Asthma symptoms, also called asthma flare-ups or asthma attacks, are often caused by allergies and exposure to allergens such as pet dander, dust mites, pollen or mold. Non-allergic triggers include smoke, pollution or cold air or changes in weather. Asthma symptoms may be worse during exercise, when you have a cold or during times of high stress. Children with asthma may show the same symptoms as adults with asthma: coughing, wheezing and shortness of breath. In some children chronic cough may be the only symptom. If your child has one or more of these common symptoms, make an appointment with an allergist / immunologist: • Coughing that is constant or that is made worse by viral infections, happens while your child is asleep, or is triggered by exercise and cold air • Wheezing or whistling sound when your child exhales • Shortness of breath or rapid breathing, which may be associated with exercise • Chest tightness (a young child may say that his chest “hurts” or “feels funny”) • Fatigue (your child may slow down or stop playing) • Problems feeding or grunting during feeding (infants) • Avoiding sports or social activities • Problems sleeping due to coughing or difficulty breathing Patterns in asthma symptoms are important and can help your doctor make a diagnosis. Pay attention to when symptoms occur: • At night or early morning • During or after exercise • During certain seasons • After laughing or crying • When exposed to common asthma triggers Asthma Diagnosis An allergist diagnoses asthma by taking a thorough medical history and performing breathing tests to measure how well your lungs work. One of these tests is called spirometry. You will take a deep breath and blow into a sensor to measure the amount of air your lungs can hold and the speed of the air you inhale or exhale. This test diagnoses asthma severity and measures how well treatment is working. Many people with asthma also have allergies, so your doctor may perform allergy testing. Treating the underlying allergic triggers for your asthma will help you avoid asthma symptoms. ASTHMA TREATMENT & MANAGEMENT There is no cure for asthma, but symptoms can be controlled with effective asthma treatment and management. This involves taking your medications as directed and learning to avoid triggers that cause your asthma symptoms. Your allergist will prescribe the best medications for your condition and provide you with specific instructions for using them. Controller medications are taken daily and include inhaled corticosteroids (fluticasone (Flovent Diskus, Flovent HFA), budesonide (Pulmicort Flexhaler), mometasone (Asmanex), ciclesonide (Alvesco), flunisolide (Aerobid), beclomethasone (Qvar) and others).

Enso joined our household last spring, one year prior to this video. We first assumed his coughing was hairballs, but by September he was diagnosed with asthma. Oral Prednisone cleared up his symptoms quickly, but long-term use of prednisone can have serious side effects, so we wanted to treat him with inhaled medication instead. The aerokat videos online were helpful. However, the cats in these videos all seemed very sweet and passive, and reportedly only required a week or two of training. I feared our chances of success with Enso were slim. He is a young, active, and very independent indoor/outdoor cat. But we decided to try. It took a full two months of daily practice before he would breath into the mask for the required 7 to 10 breaths. I started with just placing the mask over his face for a second, then giving him a treat, and lots of praise and petting, of course, too. I also coordinated his sessions with mealtimes. So he gets a little treat after each session, and then it's time for breakfast or dinner. Even after two months of practice, he was still resistant. But now that he's been receiving his medication twice daily for the past four months, you can see that he accepts the routine. Some days he squirms more than others; it depends on his energy level. But he gets the medication he needs. So if your cat is willful and resistant, don't give up! Persevere, and eventually, if your patient and gentle, and consistent with the rewards, your cat will find it's easier just to go along with procedure. It might take two months or even longer, but you'll get there. And it is so much healthier for your cat to have the medication delivered just to the lungs, were it's needed, rather than saturate his or her entire body via oral prednisone.

Pharmacology nursing NCLEX review question on bronchodilators and corticosteroid administration for a patient with asthma. This NCLEX pharmacology review question will test your nursing knowledge about how to properly administer a bronchodilator and corticosteroid metered-dose inhaler. To answer this question correctly, you must know the mechanism of action of both the bronchodilator (Albuterol) and corticosteroid (Fluticasone). What is Albuterol? It is a short-acting bronchodilator. A bronchodilator (just as its name says) opens the bronchi and bronchioles of the lungs. When this happens more air is able to flow through the lungs. This is vital for the patient who has asthma because they experience bronchoconstriction. What is a Fluticasone? It is a corticosteroid used to prevent symptoms in patients with asthma. It will work by decreasing inflammation in the small airways. To administer these medications, the bronchodilator will be administered FIRST and then 5 minutes later the corticosteroids will be administered. The bronchodilator will open the airway first so when the corticosteroids are inhaled they can do their job within the lungs. It is important to remember that AFTER administering inhaled corticosteroids, the patient must gargle and rinse the mouth with water and spit (or a spacer can be used). The reason for this is because corticosteroids can cause thrush. Flixotide inhaler: https://www.inhousepharmacy.vu/search.aspx?searchterm=Flixotide Aerokat chamber: http://www.vetrxdirect.com/product/view/aerokat-feline-asthma-chamber?gclid=CjwKEAiA58a1BRDw6Jan_PLapw8SJABJz-ZWxy9Vpjyxx--qeXY6gkdftDGsS7oh1GGjYj6A1Mbr6BoCSdXw_wcB If your cat has asthma it's important to change your air filter's and keep dust at a minimum. I also changed her diet to a gluten-free Blue Buffalo Salmon: http://bluebuffalo.com/for-cats/ Also I recommend this litter: https://www.worldsbestcatlitter.com This video shows how I give my cat, Chloe, her inhaler for feline asthma. She took Prednisone multiple times a day prior to this and had many bad side effects including; dry brittle hair, drank excessive water and had excessive urination, generally seemed depressed and more aggressive and the asthma symptoms never fully went away it just lessened the attacks. With the inhaler shes never had another single symptom since her first puff with zero side effects. Use the Aerokat dispenser and use 4cornerspharmacy.com to buy your flixotide 120 inhalers.
