Asthma Myth: Use of steroids as a treatment option and its side effects

02:08
A lot of parents have concerns about side effects from steroids. Steroids are present inside all of our bodies but when we use them as a medicine, they can help treat inflammation and swelling, which is a big part of asthma. Steroids come in many different forms, as well as many different doses. When steroids are given by mouth, or through a shot, the dose is a lot higher than what we use when given through an inhaler. An important thing to remember is that the steroids we use in medicine to treat asthma are not the same as anabolic steroids which are used by weight lifters and athletes to make their muscles big and strong. Your child will not develop big muscles by using their inhaler or any of the side effects associated with anabolic steroids. There is a common side effect that can occur if you use inhaled steroids, however. This is called thrush. Thrush is a white coating that can develop inside the mouth or on the tongue. It is very easy to treat if it does occur. However, it is also very easy to prevent. Just make sure that your child brushes their teeth and tongue after they use their inhaler or rinses their mouth. This should be done every time they use their steroid inhaler to help prevent thrush from occurring. Side effects and long-term effects of taking Advair/Prednisone/Steroids for Asthma

01:59
Usually when patients have problems with asthma/allergies/sinusitis (especially asthma) the typical conventional response is to give them medications to inhibit their immune system, mainly steroids and prednisone. As a matter of fact, it's the first line treatment that's recommended to treat people with those types of problems. They created Advair (it's a medicine called serevant and prednisone) so you don't necessarily know that there are steroids in that medication. It's a spray that works every twelve hours. What it does is that it dilates your bronchioles, gives you a bunch of steroids that would get systemically absorbed, and over time, you form less of your own steroids (or cortisol) that you would need to fight off allergies. The best way is to get at the cause of the problem, use certain vitamins and nutrients, and you can shut off some of the allergic response, and get people off some of these medications. I was on prednisone - twenty milligrams a day for two and a half years - so I know a lot about prednisone (that was for a type of joint pain and inflammation). The bottom line is: get at the source of the problem, make your body more alkaline/less acidic, and eliminate the foods and chemicals that act as triggers, and you can get people off these medications that cause all sorts of problems down the road. What kinds of problems? Well there are sleep problems. You put someone on steroids, they wind up having insomnia; inability to get REM sleep. They wind up with fatigue; it drops their blood sugar. They wind up with chronic yeast problems. It's immunosuppression. these people wind up getting colds more frequently, needing more and more antibiotics, all of which never gets at the cause of the problem, and then they get stuck on the medicines like I did. There are ways to get at the source of the problem, and pick lower-risk high-gain approaches then pick these steroids that have lots of systemic problems with them; thinning your bone, osteoporosis, and a whole range of other problems. Asthma in Athletes

04:41
Asthma is a growing concern, especially in athletes. Learn the reasons why athletes have trouble breathing, and what can be done about the problem. Though asthma is a lung symptom it is often not an actual lung cause. Asthma can be a symptom of a variety of causes such as under-functioning adrenal glands, immune system issues, inflammation, poor diet, digestive issues, or emotional stress. Dr. Gangemi explains why it’s important to identify the causes of exercise induced asthma. It’s common to treat the symptoms of exercise induced asthma with corticosteroids like Flovent and Qvar, or an asthma inhaler like Proventil or Albuterol. Other inhaler types include antihistamines, leukotriene modifier inhalers, and anti-inflammatory medications. However, an important problem with asthma medications is that they can further strain the adrenal system. So, as a natural treatment for asthma, it may be important to identify why your body is lacking the natural corticosteroids to begin with. Beyond natural remedies for asthma, Dr. Gangemi is encouraging a more holistic chronic asthma treatment approach. This can provide long-term lasting benefits as an asthma treatment for children, for athletes, or for anyone who needs to take a puff in order to function, play sports, or to exercise.

7. Why can't I take tablets to control my asthma?

01:33
The most effective way of taking most asthma treatments is to inhale the medicine by using your inhaler so it gets straight into your lungs. Most preventer treatments contain steroids and taking them by inhaler means that a much lower dose of the steroid can be used. Because the inhaled medicine goes straight down to the airways where it is needed, very little is absorbed into the rest of the body. When steroids are taken in tablet form the dose is much higher and most of it will be absorbed into the rest of the body, not just your lungs. Using steroid tablets regularly or for long periods of time (months or years) can have serious side effects including brittle bones (osteoporosis), bruising easily, diabetes, cataracts, increased hunger, heartburn and indigestion. They may make you feel depressed, or have mood swings or develop a fattened face. A small number of people need daily steroid tablets as well as their other inhalers. Remember: - occasional short courses of tablets (anything from 3-14 days) are very unlikely to give you any long-term side effects - if you do not take your inhaler as often as your doctor or asthma nurse has prescribed you will be more likely to need steroid tablets - if you find you need more than one or two short courses of tablets a year you should have an asthma review with your doctor or asthma nurse. https://www.asthma.org.uk/sign-up/ Like us on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/AsthmaUK/ Follow us on Twitter: https://twitter.com/asthmauk

Asthma how-to: How to use an inhaler with a spacer and mouthpiece

02:24
There are many asthma treatment options depending on your child's age and preference. Metered dose inhalers, which are commonly called puffers or inhalers, spray the medicine out so that you can breathe it deep into the lungs. Inhalers deliver medicine very quickly. Inhalers are compact and light so they can be easily taken with you wherever you go. It's very important to use your inhaler the correct way to make sure the medicine gets deposited into the lungs, where it works the best. Incorrect technique can leave some of the particles from the medicine on your tongue or throat, where it won't help at all. A spacer, or holding chamber, is an attachment that should always be used with your inhaler. The spacer holds the medicine in place so you can breathe it in easier. First, remove the cap from the bottom of your inhaler. When you get your new inhaler from the pharmacy, you need to "prime" or "waste" it by spraying the medicine into the air four times. Now, fit your inhaler into the opening at the end of the spacer. Shake the inhaler well for ten seconds. Turn your head to the side and breathe out. Close your mouth around the mouthpiece of the spacer. Push down on the inhaler once. Now the medicine is inside the spacer. Right away, take a slow, deep breath. The goal is to not hear a whistling sound. If you do, this means that you're breathing in too fast. Hold your breath for a count of 10. Now, slowly breathe out. Rinse your mouth out with water or brush teeth after using controller medicines such as inhaled steroids. Many times, the correct dose of your medicine will be to inhale two puffs. If this is what is prescribed for you, then wait one minute after the first puff, and then follow all of the steps again. Remember if you have questions, call your doctor's office, asthma care team or pharmacy. ASTHMA SYMPTOMS , DIAGNOSIS

02:19
ASTHMA OVERVIEW Asthma is a chronic disease involving the airways in the lungs. These airways, or bronchial tubes, allow air to come in and out of the lungs. If you have asthma your airways are always inflamed. They become even more swollen and the muscles around the airways can tighten when something triggers your symptoms. This makes it difficult for air to move in and out of the lungs, causing symptoms such as coughing, wheezing, shortness of breath and/or chest tightness. For many asthma sufferers, timing of these symptoms is closely related to physical activity. And, some otherwise healthy people can develop asthma symptoms only when exercising. This is called exercise-induced bronchoconstriction (EIB), or exercise-induced asthma (EIA). Staying active is an important way to stay healthy, so asthma shouldn't keep you on the sidelines. Your physician can develop a management plan to keep your symptoms under control before, during and after physical activity. People with a family history of allergies or asthma are more prone to developing asthma. Many people with asthma also have allergies. This is called allergic asthma. Occupational asthma is caused by inhaling fumes, gases, dust or other potentially harmful substances while on the job. Childhood asthma impacts millions of children and their families. In fact, the majority of children who develop asthma do so before the age of five. There is no cure for asthma, but once it is properly diagnosed and a treatment plan is in place you will be able to manage your condition, and your quality of life will improve. An allergist / immunologist is the best qualified physician in diagnosing and treating asthma. With the help of your allergist, you can take control of your condition and participate in normal activities. ASTHMA SYMPTOMS & DIAGNOSIS Asthma Symptoms According to the leading experts in asthma, the symptoms of asthma and best treatment for you or your child may be quite different than for someone else with asthma. The most common symptom is wheezing. This is a scratchy or whistling sound when you breathe. Other symptoms include: •    Shortness of breath •    Chest tightness or pain •    Chronic coughing •    Trouble sleeping due to coughing or wheezing Asthma symptoms, also called asthma flare-ups or asthma attacks, are often caused by allergies and exposure to allergens such as pet dander, dust mites, pollen or mold. Non-allergic triggers include smoke, pollution or cold air or changes in weather. Asthma symptoms may be worse during exercise, when you have a cold or during times of high stress. Children with asthma may show the same symptoms as adults with asthma: coughing, wheezing and shortness of breath. In some children chronic cough may be the only symptom. If your child has one or more of these common symptoms, make an appointment with an allergist / immunologist: •    Coughing that is constant or that is made worse by viral infections, happens while your child is asleep, or is triggered by exercise and cold air •    Wheezing or whistling sound when your child exhales •    Shortness of breath or rapid breathing, which may be associated with exercise •    Chest tightness (a young child may say that his chest “hurts” or “feels funny”) •    Fatigue (your child may slow down or stop playing) •    Problems feeding or grunting during feeding (infants) •    Avoiding sports or social activities •    Problems sleeping due to coughing or difficulty breathing Patterns in asthma symptoms are important and can help your doctor make a diagnosis. Pay attention to when symptoms occur: •    At night or early morning •    During or after exercise •    During certain seasons •    After laughing or crying •    When exposed to common asthma triggers Asthma Diagnosis An allergist diagnoses asthma by taking a thorough medical history and performing breathing tests to measure how well your lungs work. One of these tests is called spirometry. You will take a deep breath and blow into a sensor to measure the amount of air your lungs can hold and the speed of the air you inhale or exhale. This test diagnoses asthma severity and measures how well treatment is working. Many people with asthma also have allergies, so your doctor may perform allergy testing. Treating the underlying allergic triggers for your asthma will help you avoid asthma symptoms. ASTHMA TREATMENT & MANAGEMENT There is no cure for asthma, but symptoms can be controlled with effective asthma treatment and management. This involves taking your medications as directed and learning to avoid triggers that cause your asthma symptoms. Your allergist will prescribe the best medications for your condition and provide you with specific instructions for using them. Controller medications are taken daily and include inhaled corticosteroids (fluticasone (Flovent Diskus, Flovent HFA), budesonide (Pulmicort Flexhaler), mometasone (Asmanex), ciclesonide (Alvesco), flunisolide (Aerobid), beclomethasone (Qvar) and others).

Asthma how-to: How to use an inhaler with a spacer and mask

02:17
There are many treatment options for children with asthma, largely depending on the age and preference of the child. Metered dose inhalers, which are also commonly called puffers or inhalers, spray the medicine out so that you can breathe it deep into the lungs. Inhalers deliver medicine very quickly and are compact and light so they can easily be taken with you wherever you go. It's very important to use your inhaler the correct way to make sure the medicine gets deposited in the lungs, where it works the best. Incorrect technique can leave some of the particles from the medicine on your tongue or throat, where it won't help at all. A spacer, or holding chamber, is an attachment that should always be used with your inhaler. The spacer holds the medicine in place so you can breathe it in easier. Spacers with a mask on one end are used for smaller kids and babies. First, remove the cap from the bottom of your inhaler. When you get your new inhaler from the pharmacy, you need to "prime" or "waste" it by spraying the medicine into the air four times. Now, fit your inhaler into the opening at the end of the spacer. Shake the inhaler well for 10 seconds. Place mask tightly over the nose and mouth, then push down on the inhaler once. Now the medicine is inside the spacer. Breathe in and out six times through the mask. Rinse your mouth out with water or brush your teeth after using controller medicines such as inhaled steroids. Many times, the correct dose of your medicine will be to inhale two puffs. If this is what is prescribed for you, then wait one minute after the first puff, and then follow all of the steps again Clean the plastic holder of the inhaler each week. Clean the spacer and mask each week by soaking in warm soapy water for 15 minutes and run water through it, shake off water and set overnight to dry. Remember if you have questions, call your doctor's office, asthma care team or pharmacy. Bob using AeroKat

02:20
Here is Bob getting his meds delivered with the AeroKat. His very first experience with the AeroKat and then again 2 weeks later. You can also see the AeroKat's valve which makes it easy to monitor your cats breathing and ensure proper dosage. Bob started showing signs of asthma in his 7th year. His attacks were mild and bi-weekly, and the vet advised keeping windows shut at night. It was humid where we lived in the Caribbean. His attacks became severe and much more frequent (4 a day) after moving to northern Sweden. Very dry climate there. Initially, he took Prednesol tablets. We have recently begun using Flutide aerosol administered using the AeroKat Chamber. This video was posted only two weeks after beginning with Flutide, but it appears that the side affects are much less than with the tablets. Bob is doing much much better now. Asthma is the result of inflammation and constriction of the bronchial tubes. Allergens, environmental irritants and even stress can cause symptoms of asthma. If untreated, asthma can start with mild symptoms such as a cough or wheezing, and then escalate into an asthma attack. Severe asthma attacks make it very hard or even impossible for the asthma sufferer to breathe, depriving him of oxygen. Although there is no cure for asthma, there are steps you can take to treat or eliminate symptoms. Step 1. Use an inhaled medication. Albuterol is a short-acting beta-2 agonist that temporarily relaxes airway muscles to help you control your breathing. Atrovent is an inhaled anticholinergic that can help to provide immediate relief. Atrovent works similarly to albuterol. Albuterol is used as a quick treatment for acute symptoms. Chronic symptoms are usually treated with a Flovent Diskus, which must be prescribed by your doctor. Step 2. Take an oral prescription medication such as Theophylline. Theophylline is taken daily and is used as a long-term treatment to suppress asthma symptoms. Theophylline relaxes the muscles around airways, making it easier to breathe. Prednisone is a prescription medication is also used for long-term treatment to treat more severe asthma symptoms. Prednisone is only taken when needed. Step 3. Exercise and maintain a healthy weight. Exercising daily not only helps to keep your weight down, it also strengthens your lungs. Strengthening your lungs reduces the pressure they feel when it’s difficult for you to breathe. Exercising doesn’t necessarily mean working out at a gym. Try taking a walk during your lunch break. Aim for 15 to 20 minutes of continuous, moderate activity per day. Eating healthy foods such as fruits and vegetables allow your body to use the food you eat as energy helping you to maintain a healthier weight. Step 4 Use an air conditioner to reduce humidity and cleanse inside air. Clean the filters in your air conditioner and furnace regularly. Keeping the air in your home or office clean reduces the presence of allergens and can prevent coughs. Step 5. Wear a face mask or cover your mouth with a clean scarf if cold, dry air aggravates your asthma. Step 6. Control your stress and remain calm. Asthma can produce bouts of coughing lasting for a few seconds up to several minutes. Because these coughs can cause an attack, it is common for an asthma sufferer to become anxious or fearful. Breathe deeply or drink some water to calm the cough. Learning breathing exercises is a proactive way to learn how to calm yourself down when you become stressed. Step 7. Drink water regularly to keep the bronchial tubes moist. https://www.google.com.vn https://www.pexels.com/ https://commons.wikimedia.org/ https://en.wikipedia.org/ http://www.freestockphotos.biz/ https://pixabay.com/ https://www.flickr.com/

How To Treat A Cat With Asthma

06:54
Inflammation of the lungs due to inhaling allergens leads to the symptoms of asthma in cats. This inflammation occurs when a cat inhales an allergen (dust, pollen) that triggers the immune system, starting an allergic reaction that tightens the airways and leads to mucus buildup. Asthma symptoms can range from a mild cough or squeaky wheeze to a full-blown asthma attack, like in people. Although feline asthma has no cure, it can be effectively managed with various medications and avoidance strategies. Work with your veterinarian to create a treatment plan for your cat. How to Get Rid of Asthma | 7 Simple Steps to Get Rid of Asthma What is Asthma ? Asthma (AZ-ma) is a chronic (long-term) lung disease that inflames and narrows the airways. Asthma causes recurring periods of wheezing (a whistling sound when you breathe), chest tightness, shortness of breath, and coughing. The coughing often occurs at night or early in the morning.
