http://gacovinolake.com/avelox-cipro-levaquin-side-effects/ Three popular drugs -- Avelox, Cipro and Levaquin -- are super-heavyweights in the fight against serious bacterial diseases that plague humans. These powerful medications belong to a class of antibiotics called fluoroquinolones. They are highly effective in fighting hospital-acquired infections that can be resilient to lower-grade antibiotics. Avelox, Cipro and Levaquin are extremely potent and have become a popular prescription for common ailments such as ear and sinus infections. These drugs are so popular that in 2010, Bayer’s Avelox and Cipro brought in $1 billion in sales while Johnson & Johnson’s Levaquin brought in 1.3 billion. The benefit to thousands of consumers comes at a very steep price. The powerful medications eliminate infection but leave many consumers with a terrible condition known as peripheral neuropathy. Beware of ALL fluoroquinolone antibiotics! The 'cure' is often much, much worse than the disease with this toxic class of drugs. The FDA knows all about the damage these antibiotics are doing to the public, but chooses to look the other way. Protect yourself!

The FDA just announced that it will require more warnings on the label for a class of antibiotics known as fluoroquinolones because the side effects they cause are worse than the actual infections they are commonly prescribed for. Side effects include permanent muscle and nerve damage, when the infections they're prescribed for usually clear up on their own, without the need of any medication. NBC Charlotte 6:09 a.m. EST February 25, 2015 http://www.wcnc.com/story/news/health/2015/02/24/devastating-side-effects-prompt-local-push-to-ban-antibiotic/23977183/ It is a commonly prescribed antibiotic-- doctors offer it for everything from urinary tract infections to sinus infections. But a local mom is pushing to get Levaquin off the shelves after she suffered devastating side effects. And a drug watchdog group is pushing the FDA for tougher warning labels. Shannon Myers is trying to slyly wrap his Valentine's day gift for wife Adrienne. The two are very much in love and very much a team– no matter what. "Every day you push through it, you push through it because you have to," Adrienne says. Adrienne endures grueling physical therapy several times a week; the 36-year-old mother of two struggles to walk. "It's very painful for me, just because my Achilles hurts really bad, so in order for me to not lose strength in my legs, I have to do this. I just have to bear the pain." It started last summer. Adrienne was diagnosed with a sinus infection; doctors prescribed Levaquin, the brand name for a drug called Levofloaxacin. A few days into the prescription she says, "I started having issues with my legs-- my legs hurt, they burn, felt like I walked up hill all day, my feet hurt, I had problems with my eyes, my vision started becoming kind of blurred." It took three months and four doctors to come up with a diagnosis. Dr. Ki Jung, Adrienne's neurologist, says the Levaquin caused tendinopathy and peripheral neuropathy. He says he helped rule other things out and worked on a timeline to figure out what happened. Jung says, "I told Adrienne, let's put a timeline to this and see where we are and then see if we can tease out any correlations; that's really where we were able to get to the notion that this was a Levaquin problem." "So basically the drug attacked her nerves and tendons?" "Correct, in terms of a side effect profile." Adrienne was shocked. "He said unfortunately you have nerve damage from taking Levaquin." Dr. Charles Bennett chairs a drug watchdog agency at the University of South Carolina. He was not at all surprised to hear Adrienne's story. "I'm not surprised. I've been working on this for years. This woman is a story that's replicated in city after city, case after case." He recently petitioned the FDA for new, what's called black box warnings for Levaquin, those are bold warnings meant to grab your attention. The FDA already required black box warnings in 2008, warning of possible tendon rupture and muscle weakness. And in 2013 the FDA required a label change warning of nerve damage. Bennett says the FDA's own stats show 1200 people have died and nearly 100,000 have suffered side effects from Levaquin or Levofloaxcin. "Thankfully it's not life threatening for me. I'm very fortunate that it has not been a life threatening thing for me, so I think about the positive and hopefully my nerves will regenerate themselves and become healthy again," Adrienne says. Her husband Shannon just wishes he could take away her pain. "It makes you wish, just like anybody you love, you could go back and do something about it. Like wish you had more time, researched more, maybe take it off her shoulders a little bit and put it on yours." NBC Charlotte reached out to Levaquin for a statement. They responded Tuesday evening: "LEVAQUIN® (levofloxacin) Tablets is part of an important class of anti-infective prescription medications that have been used for more than 20 years to treat infections, including those that may be serious or life threatening. When used according to the product labeling, LEVAQUIN® has been proven to have a favorable benefit-risk profile." The best advice: ask your doctor and your pharmacist to go over the possible side effects of this drug-- or any other for that matter, and if you have concerns, ask for an alternative.

You can also notify some side effects such as severe watery diarrhea, hives, vomiting, abdominal cramps, white patches on tongue, swallowing of lips and face, shortness of breath and vaginal itching. BUT If you combine the antibiotics, it can be sometimes helpful to treat severe infections. In starting days of problem, when the bacterium's sensitivity to antibiotics is not known it can prove beneficial. Combinations are also important for those infections in which the bacterium rapidly develops resistance to a single antibiotic. Infections caused by more than one bacterium, in which each bacterium is susceptible to a different antibiotic are also treated with a combination of antibiotics. http://www.pharmacyff.com

April 3, 2015 11:34 PM CBS New York http://newyork.cbslocal.com/2015/04/03/seen-at-11-is-the-antibiotic-cipro-a-prescription-for-danger/ Cipro is a common antibiotic that is prescribed for treating a number of bacterial infections, but some say it may be a prescription for danger. “I wanted to be a firefighter since I was a kid,” Chris Jones said. For 9 years Jones has been living that dream, but the last 5 months have been a nightmare. “My life flipped upside down,” he told CBS2’s Dick Brennan. Flipped upside down, he said, because of crippling side effects he experienced after taking the popular antibiotic Ciprofloxacin or Cipro as it is more commonly known. “I went on a walk with my dog after taking the medicine, and it felt like a bomb went off in my body,” he said. It’s pain that continued ever since, especially in his legs. “His story is so, to me, typical of many of the stories I’ve read about and looked through the FDA files on,” Dr. Charles Bennett said. Dr. Bennett is a professor of pharmacy who recently filed a petition asking the FDA to put broader warnings on Cipro. the medication is part of a class of antibiotics called quinolones, along with the drugs Levaquin and Avelox. “Doctors are not aware of the full range of toxicities that are associated with the quinolones,” Bennett said. Critics also charge that the drugs, which are so strong they can kill anthrax, are too freely prescribed for illnesses that could be treated with less powerful medications. “They haven’t done a good enough job warning the public about how dangerous this drug is,” Jones said. The FDA said it’s logged just 4,500 reports of serious side effects, an exceedingly small percentage considering 23-million prescriptions are filled each year. Drug makers already list side effects including the possibility for tendon and nerve damage on the labels. “I just don’t know if I’m going to get better or not, and no one can tell me,” Jones said. Jones is living with the pain and other side effects, which even the FDA acknowledged may be permanent in some people. “The hardest thing is not knowing,” Jones said. The FDA told CBS2 it’s continuing to monitor complaints. Bayer, the maker of Cipro, said in a statement that they encourage patients to speak with their healthcare providers regarding any symptoms that they may experience after taking a prescription product.

When consulting a doctor because of illness or other health concerns, it stands to reason that you follow the doctor’s advice and take whatever medicine you are given. It’s what most of us do. But do you know that many prescribed drugs can do more harm than good to your body?In fact, prescription drugs are one of the leading causes of death in the world. This might be news for many, but this is reality. The pharmaceutical industry and prescription drugs have their place in our medically advanced society. It is not possible to treat sickness with a prescribed pill, without dealing with the root cause behind the problem. This is one reason why prescribed drugs are causing some serious side effects, compelling doctors to prescribe more pills to deal with those side effects. It is important to carefully analyze the pros and cons of prescription drugs before making a decision of whether to take them. Here are 10 highly dangerous prescription drugs you should know about. 1. Methotrexate and Other Chemotherapeutic AgentsAnother prescribed drug that can be harmful is methotrexate as well as other chemotherapeutic agents. This drug is used alone or in combination with other medicines to treat different types of cancer, such as breast, head and neck, lung, blood, bone, lymphoma and uterine cancers. Methotrexate is also prescribed by many rheumatologists and other practitioners to treat rheumatoid arthritis. This drug comes as a solution for intravenous (IV) injection, which needs to be injected into a vein. It is also available as an oral tablet. The most common side effects of this drug include mouth sores, nausea, fever, dizziness, stomach pain, tiredness, chills and an increased risk of infections. When taken along with other drugs and for longer durations, methotrexate can cause serious, life-threatening side effects. These serious side effects include bleeding as well as liver, kidney and bone marrow damage. During such a situation, you may suffer from vomit that contains blood, black tarry stools, unusual vaginal bleeding, yellowing of the skin, urinary problems, blisters on the skin, peeling skin and extreme muscle weakness, to name a few.2. AntibioticsAntibiotics are a popular class of prescribed drugs that often restore health and even save lives.Antibiotics are helpful in treating infections caused by bacteria, such as some forms of bronchitis, pneumonia and urinary tract infections. Antibiotics work by killing the bacteria or stopping them from growing and multiplying. But overuse as well as misuse of these drugs can cause long-term health problems. In fact, antibiotics are inappropriately prescribed for conditions that do not even respond to them. Long-term use of such drugs has made many infections more virulent and untreatable. Some of the most harmful antibiotics that are commonly prescribed are Levaquin (levofloxacin), Vancocin (vancomycin hydrochloride), Bactrim (trimethoprim and sulfamethoxazole), Cipro (ciprofloxacin), Avelox (moxifloxacin HCL)

Which antibiotic should you try to avoid taking, if possible…next Side effects of fluoroquinolones far more disabling than other antibiotics, experts say Idelle Davidson writing in the Washington Post reported on the side effects of fluoroquinolones, noting that levofloxacin ranked third “in the number of serious adverse event reports submitted directly to the Food and Drug Administration in 2013,” while ciprofloxacin, another fluoroquinolone, ranked fifth, according to the Institute for Safe Medication Practices. Experts say that fluoroquinolones “can be far more disabling than other antibiotics” because of the life-altering nature of their side effects, which include tendon rupture, disabling peripheral neuropathy or permanent nerve damage to the arms and legs, eye disorders, psychiatric and nervous system disorders, seizures, ringing in the ears, and burning and tingling sensations. Comment: I have seen a number of tendon issues associated with these fluoroquinolone antibiotics.

These Antibiotics Cause Nerve Damage And Lifelong Disability The Fluoroquinolones are a group of antibiotics that are usually prescribed for urinary tract infections and respiratory infections, but these antibiotic can cause serious nerve damage. These antibiotics were given to more than 23 million patients in 2011. Fluoroquinolones include: Ofloxacin (Floxin) Norfloxacin (Noroxin) Moxifloxacin (Avelox) Levofloxacin (Levaquin) Gemifloxacin(Factive) Ciprofloxacin (Cipro) The FDA required an update on the labels of these drugs, their side effects of peripheral neuropathy. Peripheral neuropathy This antibiotic kills the bacteria that cause the illness. But according to new research, the risks of these medications are more than the benefits of it. Peripheral neuropathy is when the nerves which send the information are damaged. This damage disables the connection. People with peripheral neuropathy can feel numbness, burning pain in the legs or the arms and tingling. These medications can cause long-lasting damage to the nerves and this can lead to disability. They can get into the blood-brain barrier and this leads to getting into the brain and damaging the central nervous system. In 2010 Levaquin was the most selling antibiotic and by 2011 had more than 2000 lawsuits from patients. SYMPTOMS AND SIDE EFFECTS You will feel the symptoms after only a few days, and you should contact medical help immediately. The symptoms are: Tingling Numbness Burning Weakness Rupture and tendon damage Shooting pains Confusion Muscle and joint pain Hallucinations NATURAL TREATMENT For sinus infection drink a lot of water and teas. You can prepare a natural remedy with lemon juice and apple cider vinegar. And for UTI you must also drink water and teas and take probiotics like kefir, yogurt, kombucha etc. Watch the video for more information.

ABC 10 News 6:12 AM, Nov 24, 2014 http://www.10news.com/news/investigations/patients-experts-popular-antibiotics-could-cause-permanent-damage-11242014 For Jenny Frank, it started with a small white pill she took nearly four years ago. "I was prescribed Levaquin for a strep infection," she said. "I can't compare myself to the person I was in December in 2010." Levaquin is one of the most commonly prescribed antibiotics on the market. Frank said it left her with persistent, painful and long-term side effects that affected her both physically and mentally. She recalls one moment as the scariest of her life. "About three weeks after I had stopped taking it, I started typing on the computer," Frank said. "When I looked at what I had written it wasn't even words." The science teacher said it was "gibberish." So, Frank deleted what she wrote and tried again. "Same thing… it was just random letters and numbers and things," she said. When asked what she was thinking, Frank said, "I can't even put a sentence together. Oh my god. Am I going to lose my job?" New warnings needed? Levaquin is in a class of antibiotics called fluoroquinolones. It is one of the most potent antibiotics approved by the Food and Drug Administration and is prescribed millions of times a year. Experts said that most Americans will take Levaquin in their lifetime. Team 10's investigative partners at ABC 15 in Phoenix spoke to researchers and patients across the country who believe that Levaquin carries more serious side effects than are listed on the label. They have filed a pair of citizen petitions this year asking the FDA to add new warnings to the label for a long list of psychiatric side effects ranging from depression to hallucinations and also something called "mitochondrial toxicity." In simple terms, researchers say that means it could alter and damage the body's cells. Dr. Charles Bennett helped write the citizen petitions filed with the FDA. Bennett, who says he has successfully petitioned the FDA before, is with the South Carolina College of Pharmacy and the Southern Network on Adverse Reactions (SONAR). He said he has been analyzing the effects of Levaquin and other fluoroquinolones for three years. Bennett said thousands of people have reported psychiatric side effects to the FDA. He also pointed to a 2013 FDA review of six different fluoroquinoles, including Levaquin, that raised the possibility of mitochondrial toxicity. Team 10 has also learned that full studies are underway at UC San Diego and the University of Rochester to look into these side effects. Experts: Overuse leads to added risk Frank is part of the fight to add new warnings to the label. "There's no reason why anyone should have to go through this if there are safer antibiotics that could be used," she said. "This should be a last resort. Not a first line of defense." It is a feeling shared by Dr. Ray Woosley, founder of CredibleMeds and a medication safety expert. He believes Levaquin and other fluoroquinolones are overprescribed. "The FDA put out a call two years ago that says don't overuse these drugs, but they continue to be overused," Woosley said. "It's like the wild west out there." Here is an example: During the anthrax mail attacks in 2001, victims were prescribed the fluoroquinolone Ciprofloxacin. "They are very potent antibiotics," Woosley said. "We can't take them off the market. We have got to have them available for whom they are lifesaving." But Woosley said that is also why these antibiotics should not be prescribed for things like sinus infections or prostatitis, like Tony Woods. Woods was prescribed Ciprofloxacin for a possible prostate infection two years ago. "There was no evidence I had an infection," said Woods, "He just wanted to treat me for what he thought was an infection." Woods took the pills for 19 days. "I started having extreme burning in my limbs, sensitivity to light, my eyes, my hearing, everything just felt rearranged," he said. "I couldn't smell or taste." The father of four was bedridden for months. "It's horrible," Woods said. "You go to bed thinking you are going to die … who's going to provide for my family?" Woods' attorney, John Fiske, said his firm, John Gomez Trial Attorneys, has been getting hundreds of calls a week from people who have taken these drugs. Fiske said the maker of Levaquin, Johnson & Johnson, faces a product liability lawsuit over side effects of the drug that allegedly caused peripheral neuropathy for one woman. The complaint was filed in August in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California. Fiske expects more to be filed against the makers of these drugs. "These are some of the most widely prescribed drugs in the world," said Fiske.

It is my opinion only, that the damage these antibiotics are causing to people's bodies may be partially or fully due to the drug's destruction of crucially important healthy forms of bacteria in the gut. This, along with leaky gut which I believe is epidemic, may cause both a fungal version of yeast called candida to breach the barrier in the gut, and give the immune system a particularly difficult time managing it, as well as oxalate to also permeate the entire body causing a potential double-whammy that if addressed, may reverse the condition. Lots to be pissed off about with this situation. But one biggie is in how people are being told this condition is permanent. Although I believe it can be difficult to reverse, I believe it is entirely possible if approached from the above theoretical standpoint. That is how I approached it, and have had tremendous results. See my programs as well as the free info over at http://MaintenanceMotions.com. If you have some organic expeller-pressed coconut oil...or oil of your choice according to options available via Ayurvedic tradition...I'd give oil pulling a try, sticking with it for a solid few months. I have found it to be incredibly effective for joint/tendon issues, with dietary change, gut health with probiotics, and candida management to offer profound improvements. I need to consistently maintain the effort, but it's a part of my lifestyle regardless. 5/15 10pm - A potent "go-to" antibiotic that doctors prescribe often could be destroying more than your infection, CALL7 Investigators have discovered.

11:38 PM, Mar 26, 2015 WFTS TAMPA BAY A urinary tract infection sent Largo resident Nancy Garlow to a doctor last fall. He prescribed one of the popular antibiotics in a group known as fluoroquinolones. The pain hit on day five. Garlow claims she read the drug insert but only after severe side effects took over and she could barely walk. She said no one mentioned these pills carry a black box warning – the FDA's strongest – regarding "serious nerve damage" and debilitating pain. Seven months later, Galow says she remains too sick to return to work. In Sarasota, Dr. Susan Tannenbaum said she's spent the last 12 months putting her life back together. A bout of bronchitis led to a prescription for another popular fluoroquinolone, levofloxacin, whose brand name is Levaquin. By day seven she was unable to get out of bed. Dr. Tannenbaum describes being in the kind of pain that left her barely able to move and it lasted for months. Dr. Charles Bennett who heads up South Carolina's drug watchdog agency says he’s concerned about the number of people who’ve suffered devastating side effects. FDA documents show they've received 1,200 reported deaths related to Levaquin and its generic levofloxacin between 1997 and 2012. Dr. Bennett said only 1 percent of adverse effects are reported to the FDA. Last summer Dr. Bennett filed a petition with the FDA for stronger warnings about more of Levaquin's side effects, including those on the brain. The FDA upgraded its nerve damage warning in 2013 on all fluoroquinolones. Dr. Tennenbaum said she is proof it is not enough. We asked the FDA about the petition. They responded via email: "The FDA takes concerns raised about safety of approved drugs very seriously and we are considering the matters raised by the petition and giving it our careful attention." Johnson & Johnson, the makers of Levaquin, told us it monitors the safety of all of their medicines and incorporates new data into their labels so doctors and patients can make informed decisions. Here is the company’s statement in full. Statement from Janssen: At Janssen, our first priority is the well-being of the people who use our medicines. We are aware of the Citizen Petition and we are evaluating it. LEVAQUIN® (levofloxacin) is part of the important fluoroquinolone class of anti-infective prescription medications that have been used for more than 20 years to treat infections, including those that may be serious or life threatening. All medicines, including LEVAQUIN®, have both benefits and risks. We continually collect and monitor information on the safety and effectiveness of all our medicines, and, in cooperation with the US FDA and other health authorities, we incorporate new data into our product labels so doctors and patients can make informed decisions. Ever since it was first approved by the FDA in 1996, the LEVAQUIN® label has provided information to physicians on the risks and benefits associated with the medication, including warnings and precautions.

PLEASE EXPAND FOR IMPORTANT INFORMATION- This is a documentary about my health, coming out of remission, and living life. There is no cure for my condition, but there is hope. Please read my bio on my YouTube Page-http://www.youtube.com/user/Bonnie90505 Watch-Back On Enbrel-Oct 3, 2009 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=byrmA9Sih5g Watch-Certain Antibiotics Spur Widening Reports of Severe Side Effects http://www.pbs.org/newshour/bb/health/jan-june11/antibiotics_06-16.html I had a "possible" reaction to antibiotic-Leviquin and Avelox From http://www.antibiotics.org The Food and Drug Administration imposed the government's most urgent safety warning on Cipro, Levaquin, Avelox and many other flouroquinolone antibiotics. The FDA orders a prominent "black box" warning and the development of new literature for patients emphasizing the risks. The most prominent risk is tendon rupture causing long term disability, possibly permanent. This is an important first step to ensuring these antibiotics are only used when the patient faces a potential fatal outcome, and only after the use of all other antibiotics have been ruled out. This is not due to the probability of risk, but rather severity. To those who have been affected, prognosis is normally not good. There is no cure. Often repeat exposure through food and water cause a continual never ending cycle of symptoms. Many victims face the fact that their lives have been completely destroyed. Many face loss of job and income, some face breakup of the family. Some have even committed suicide because of the pain inflicted by these drugs. Unfortunately, physicians currently give these prescriptions out like candy. To emphasize the ignorance of physicians, Cipro is often prescribed post-op for tendon repair surgery. The physician will often prescribe a drug known to cause tendon rupture as a preventive to infection after tendon repair surgery. There is an obvious neglect on the part of the physicians who simply do not known the potential dangers of the drugs they prescribe. So where is the breakdown of information? Unfortunately many physicians mistakenly rely on pharmaceutical drug reps to point out any potential side effects rather than investigating it themselves. Further implicating the physicians, they accept gifts from drug companies and in return will prescribe unnecessary and dangerous substances. Drug Reps, paid on commission, find themselves making more sales by not disclosing the dangers, or make light of potential side effects. Making the problem worse, the drug manufactures trivialize and distort the potential risks. A pending U.S. Senate bill would require drug companies to report gifts to doctors of more than $25. New York State's legislature plans to hold hearings this year on the relationship between doctors and drug companies. One congressional critic has even compared the drug industry with the tobacco industry, and Senator John McCain has called drugmakers the "bad guys." Levaquin Side Effects exist and persist for very specific reasons. Yes you took a pill or IV dose, and you quickly had negative side effects. That makes sense to people. But then levaquin symptoms can last for months, years, decades, a lifetime, and rarely will you find a good explanation for that. But there is no mystery to either the immediate side effects of levaquin nor the long lasting (and progressively worsening) symptoms of levaquin even when Levaquin has long been out of the body. When you speak to your doctor and don't get any good answers or solutions, it's time to educate yourself. What causes side effects of levofloxacin, levaquin, avelox, cipro, ciprofloxacin, norfloxacin, etc? Why do levaquin symptoms last so long (months to forever). How do you get rid of symptoms from levaquin? Find out more at https://www.TendonitisExpert.com/levaquin-side-effects.html

https://www.TendonitisExpert.com/levaquin-tendonitis.html Levaquin Tendonitis is NOT regular tendonitis. The Levaquin antibiotic, a member of the fluoroquinolone class of antibiotics (along with Cipro, Avelox, Levofloxacin, etc) attack a person's connective tissue structures and can even cause DNA damage. If you are suffering from Levaquin side effects, you MUST educate yourself about how Levaquin works and how to give your body it's best chance at being able to recover.

Please do not take fluoroquinolone antibiotics unless they are a last resort. Fluoroquinolones should never be prescribed as a first line antibiotic for minor infections, but this is a widespread practise. Physicians and pharmacists must be educated on the dangers of these drugs! Please note: I'm not advocating the use of marijuana for others, just sharing something that has helped me in the past to overcome the damaging emotional and psychological effects of Cipro. Marijuana should be used only in certain cases and for a limited amount of time, just until symptoms have cleared. Marijuana can also have damaging effects on the system (especially with long-term or daily use) and should be researched before trying. My point is that it is generally a safer form of medicine that pharmaceuticals and can be used in place of them if they are being used for things like sleeplessness, nausea, headaches, anxiety, etc. However, the best case scenario is that we do not need any medicines to be healthy and to feel good living on Planet Earth, including marijuana! :-) Correction: Fluoroquinolone antibiotics have been infused with fluorine, rather than fluoride. I believe it is all similar in chemical structure. I was poisoned by Cipro, produced by Bayer, in December 2009. These are some of the things that have helped me in my recovery process. CBS Los Angeles March 4, 2015 11:16 PM losangeles.cbslocal.com/2015/03/04/southland-firefighter-says-popular-antibiotic-stripped-him-of-his-career/ A Southland firefighter wants to warn others about a prescription drug that he says poisoned him and stripped him of the ability to do what he loves. Chino resident Chris Jones was taking a powerful antibiotic called ciproflaxacin, more commonly known by the brand name “Cipro.” It’s taken by millions of Americans every year. Cipro belongs to a class of antibiotics called fluoroquinolones, which are so strong they can kill anthrax. They’re used to kill a wide variety of bacteria responsible for many common infections. Jones’ ordeal started in October with a bout of groin pain, which he thought was a hernia. His doctor suspected it was an infection and prescribed him Cipro, but Jones took the generic. Two days after starting the medication, Jones called his doctor about soreness he was feeling in his legs. The doctor said to keep taking the medication. Jones went to a specialist and told him about disturbing side effects patients were reporting online. He said the new doctor didn’t believe ciproflaxacin caused those problems: “He told me to stay off the Internet, and he wrote me another prescription.” A day after starting his third bottle, Jones starting feeling excruciating pain from his hips down: “I went on a walk with my dog and it felt like an explosion went off in my body.” Jones says he hasn’t been the same ever since. And no one missed the “old Chris” more than his twin brother, Jeremy: “We used to go to the gym together, hiking together.” They used to work at the same fire station, but Chris hasn’t worn his uniform for five months. That’s because he says he can’t climb ladders, can’t lift gurneys, and he can’t even lift his own children. “I was poisoned,” Chris Jones said. Some experts say fluoroquinolones are prescribed too freely for illnesses that could be treated with less powerful medications. “Doctors are not aware of the full range of toxicities that are associated with the quinolones,” said Charles Bennett, a professor of pharmacy at the University of South Carolina. Bennett has filed a citizen’s petition asking the federal Drug and Administration for broader warning for fluoroquinolones. He says Chris Jones is far from alone: “His story is typical of many of the stories I’ve read about and looked through the FDA files on.” The FDA has logged more than 4,500 reports of debilitating side effects linked to fluoroquinolones. Drug makers and the FDA are open about many of these drugs’ dangers, including damage to the tendons and nerves, which are listed on the label. But with up to 23 million prescriptions of fluoroquinolones being filled in a year, Jones believes they haven’t done a sufficient job of warning the public of the medications’ dangers. Jones says the FDA acknowledges that some side effects could be permanent: “I just don’t know if I’m going to get better or not. And no one can tell me.” The FDA told CBS2 it is continuing to monitor complaints and that petitions to update warning labels remain under consideration.
