Business Continuity (BC) Management is often confused with Disaster Recovery (DR) Planning as often BC steps are mentioned as part of a DR handbook. During this talk we will highlight what BC is all about and how to get started with it. Creating a DR Plan for certain key systems is only a small part of BC Management and as an example we will illustrate how a central backup server (using Bareos backup software) plays an important role in DR scenarios of keys systems of your datacenter. We will explain how Relax-and-Recover (rear), a Linux DR tool, can be integrated with Bareos backup software to fill the DR gab and as such using Bareos to restore the system from scratch again. Using the right tools for each task, rear for the bare-metal preparation and Bareos for the restore, is the perfect match.

His leadership resulted in the protection of 25,000 acres of natural and agricultural lands and launched 40,000 acres of conservation projects currently underway. Maria Jaakkola, landscape architect, visual artist and head of Helsinki City Planning Department Environmental Office since 2008, is positioned to be a shaper of her city’s future. The Helsinki Master Plan under development is focused on increasing urban density to accommodate population growth. Jaakkola initiated a Green Areas Strategy to address issues with impact on livability: the balance between built and green, density limits, adaptation to climate change, healthy lifestyles and ecosystem services. She will use her Loeb year to teach and learn, expand professional networks and gather case studies with the potential to influence positive outcomes in Helsinki. As an urban designer for NYC when Hurricane Sandy hit, Thaddeus Pawlowski already had been working to shift the city’s storm focus from evacuation and shelter to building for greater resilience. He was uniquely situated to assist the city’s recovery as planning advisor in the NYC Mayor's Office of Housing Recovery Operations. Months earlier he had convened 80 respected architects to develop design principles for the flood zone and recommend zoning changes that were subsequently adopted. He collaborated on a playbook for deploying post-disaster temporary housing to facilitate consensus-based comprehensive planning. In the coming year, Pawlowski plans to document the lessons he learned, research models from other cities and craft recommendations for improvement.

Nancy Pearson, IBM, at IBM Edge 2013 with John Furrier and Dave Vellante Nancy Pearson, VP Expert Integrated Systems Marketing, IBM, discussed the results of the department she runs and the ecosystem IBM is building with theCube co-hosts Dave Vellante and John Furrier, live at the IBM Edge 2013 conference. "We've just had our first year anniversary," she said, reporting they have sold over 4000 systems globally, and will continue to sell, and "get all kinds of exciting new customers and examples of success." Pearson said that the company is still making progress on building up the ecosystems, aiming to keep adding more business patterns (which partners contribute to the ecosystem) and continue to produce new IBM patterns. By deploying these patterns you are able to accelerate results and the deployment of applications. "A pattern really quantifies experience, knowledge, references," architecture, from partners, a type of collective intelligence. "It takes our clients a tremendous amount of time to get the same knowledge and expertise on their own." She also added that "it's equally important that IBM is creating patterns from our own software and from third party software." The numbers are growing and they will continue to grow. Commenting on the company's open source involvement, Pearson pointed out that "it's what open source is what really about: everyone can contribute. The best ideas are the ones that flourish." On the PureSystems ecosystem, pipeline Explaining what the ecosystem implies, Pearson mentioned a number of partners that sell / provide services and deliver our PureSystems to clients and work with them, ISVs, patterns, application focus, speed of deploying applications. The ecosystem addressed mid to large sized customers, MSPs where there's a very quick adoption, a lot of enterprises, a wide variety of businesses and "a tremendous amount of cloud deployments." Commenting on the company's projects on data management -- disaster recovery, data protection, Pearson said: "We've just announced backup and backup recovery for PureFlex and Flex systems," which "makes them a very solid environment for disaster recovery." "We talked about a number of reference architectures and we'll be delivering around of patterns around SAP. We've just announced the capabilities for the business suite in Hanna. We're talking about an SAP pattern for Pure applications," she added. The company's clients try to deploy applications faster and more efficiently.
