In this video we meet Casey & Natasha, a conscious couple who built a passive solar home near Ottawa, Ontario, Canada. In addition to orienting their house to face south, they installed overhangs that block the sun to keep it cool during summer months and allow the sun to enter and heat the house during winter months. They also installed a 10 kW solar system that sells clean electricity back to the grid through Ontario's MicroFIT Program and the revenue helps cover their own utility bills. The house was built to Passive House standards and is currently pending certification. You can learn more about Passive House here: http://www.passivehouse.ca/fundamentals/ The exterior walls of this house are 20" thick and are insulated using Roxul insulation which is made locally, better for the environment, can get wet, and has less flame retardants than traditional fiberglass insulation, which means cleaner air quality in the home. To maximize the energy efficiency of their home, they installed triple glazed windows, a drain water heat recovery system, an air source heat pump water heater, and a bioethanol fireplace. They also chose sustainable alternatives like concrete countertops instead of granite, and reclaimed pine flooring instead of using new wood. Last but not least, they designed their house to be completely fossil fuel-free which means that they don't use any fossil fuels to power or heat their home. Casey & Natasha are building a conscious group of companies to align their work life with their personal values. Their companies include The Conscious Builder, the Conscious Living podcast and the Conscious Store (coming soon!). http://cgreyconstruction.com http://caseyplusnatasha.com Thanks for watching! If you decide to build a solar-powered house, you can essentially live ‘off the grid, providing yourself with your own food, power, water, sewage treatment, and so on. Just because you want to live in completely self-sustaining home, doesn’t mean it has to be primitive, as if it were separated from the 21st century! Believe it or not, these homes actually have quite a lot of modern amenities you would find in a typical home!

From The Dome Homes to The Solar House in Spain here are 17 Self Sustaining Homes. Would you live in any of these amazing homes? Subscribe to Talltanic http://goo.gl/wgfvrr #8 - The Dome Homes The International Dome Home Co. made a building model that has multiple functions. They can be used as office buildings, as homes, small stores, almost anything you could think of. The shape is the magic key in its design. The dome shape allows the building to be structurally stable, saves energy due to better circulation, and the shape allows the outside to last longer since it dissipates the wind opposed to being gradually eroded by it. Who wouldn’t want to live in one of these, it’s like having your very own green hobbit hole! #7 - The Orchid House A name befitting of its shape, the Orchid house is located on a nature reserve in England. The 2400 square foot home was part of a green home building project called the Lower Mill Estate. The house, which is referred to as the most expensive green home ever sold, cost the new owner a whopping $14.2 million. The best feature in the house, a geothermal heating pump that claims to generate more energy than it uses. #6 - ZeroHouse ZeroHouse is a home that was designed to be completely self-sufficient. The house produces power through solar panels, has reservoirs to collect rainwater, and it even turns your waste into compost. Each one of these functions can be commanded through a smart device such as a phone or tablet. The makers of the ZeroHouse promise that this tricked out model is only just the beginning. You can snatch one up for yourself today for only $350,000. #5 - The Solar House in Spain A $7.7 million dollar villa is up for sale in Mallorca, Spain and the entire thing is powered by solar energy. The house is a whopping 6,450-square-feet and has five bedrooms and five bathrooms. The inside has recently been remodeled, and the previous owners updated the appliances to stainless steel. It may not be as big as some of these other green homes we’ve seen on this list but if you have that kind of cash laying around we’re sure you could at least use it as a vacation getaway, the views alone are gorgeous. #4 - The Wyne Residence In British Columbia, Canada ski patroller Richard Wyne designed and crafted this zero-energy home called the Richard Wyne’s Whistler home. The 2,200 square-foot house cost a little over $1.2 million to create but the three-story home features fiberglass windows, and fiber-cement siding to decrease heat transfers. A 600-foot solar panel array on the roof supplies the house with all the energy the family could possibly use. If those features weren’t green enough for you just know that one of the building materials used in this design is a spray foam that is made from recycled plastics and vegetable oil. If that isn’t recycling and reusing I’m not sure what is. #3 - The Finca Bellavista Rainforest Village The treetop community was first designed to preserve the 300 acres of rainforest in Costa Rica. The collection of tree houses runs completely off of sustainable energy and offers a recycling center, a hydroelectric turbine system that gives power to the members of the community, a community garden, and even internet with wifi can be found at the bottom of the trees. What is the best way to get from tree to tree other than swinging on a vine like George of the jungle, zip lines, and this community is outfitted with a network of them dubbed the “Sky Trail.” #2 - The Yannell Residence The Yannell residence was designed for Michael Yannell by Farr Associates and Goldberg General Contracting. The single family home is 2,675-square-feet and is located in Chicago, Illinois. The home cost $1.6 million to build but seems worth it since it produces 40% more energy than it consumes. That being the case, the house scored higher than any other LEED-certified green housing project in history. #1 - A Home on Bird Island Bird Island is an urban renewal project being designed by Graft Lab Architects for the YTL Green Home Competition in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. The home is made from sustainably-sourced silicone glass fabric which makes it a zero energy home. The unique flexibility allows the structure to bend and sway with the wind just like a treetop. Even though there was a total of six green home structures built on Bird Island for the competition we still think that the design of this model beats all.

Researchers have just found two new ways to make solar power more efficient. Could this solve our energy crisis? These Massive Geoengineering Projects Won't Stop Global Warming - https://youtu.be/tKzlYtTjxoU Sign Up For The Seeker Newsletter Here - http://bit.ly/1UO1PxI Read More: The American Solar Industry Had a Historic Year https://www.seeker.com/the-american-solar-industry-had-a-historic-year-2307076151.html "America's solar industry is booming, showing its biggest growth ever in 2016, and it appears set to break additional records in the years ahead, according to a new industry report. The solar sector nearly doubled the amount of solar power installed last year compared to 2015, GTM Research and the Solar Energy Industries Association said in their annual analysis of the US solar sector. Indeed, more solar power was added last year to the nation's electricity grid than any other source of energy - a milestone for the burgeoning industry." Liquid storage of solar energy - more effective than ever before https://phys.org/news/2017-03-liquid-storage-solar-energy-effective.html "Many consider the sun the energy source of the future. But one challenge is that it is difficult to store solar energy and deliver the energy 'on demand". A research team from Chalmers University of Technology in Gothenburg, Sweden, has shown that it is possible to convert the solar energy directly into energy stored in the bonds of a chemical fluid - a so-called molecular solar thermal system. The liquid chemical makes it possible to store and transport the stored solar energy and release it on demand, with full recovery of the storage medium." Make perovskite solar cells stable https://www.nature.com/news/make-perovskite-solar-cells-stable-1.21807 "The hunt is on to find a cheap and safe solar-cell technology. Crystalline silicon is the basis for 90% of commercial photovoltaic devices, which use semiconductors to convert light into electricity. But silicon photovoltaics are still expensive to process, their manufacture produces toxic by-products and they are cumbersome to install. Perovskites could be a game-changer." ____________________ Seeker inspires us to see the world through the lens of science and evokes a sense of curiosity, optimism and adventure. This gorgeous tiny house has a lot a lot of juice, as you'll see in the video. So much so, that it can run completely off of solar energy. Our friend Doug from Timbercraft Tiny Homes in Alabama was kind enough to hook us up with a video tour of his latest build. The tiny house has two bedrooms, one is a loft and the master is a fully standup bedroom with tons of storage, mostly under the bed. What a lovely build! No need to bring hookup electricity, just park this beauty in a sunny spot and generate your energy. One more recurring bill to knock off of bill list! The secret to building an affordable, net-zero home that produces as much energy as it consumes is harvesting passive solar energy. In this video, we meet Connie and Craig from Wind Chasers. They're a retired couple who built themselves a 100% off-grid, passive solar earthship using plans they bought from Mike Reynolds (the man featured in the Garbage Warrior documentary - check it out if you haven't already!). The couple built the earth ship because they wanted to live an environmentally sustainable lifestyle, but they also wanted to live a financially sustainable lifestyle that would allow them to retire comfortably. Building this home using recycled tires and portland cement cost them a fraction of what a conventional house would have cost, and they got the 1200 recycled tires they needed for free! In addition to the low construction cost, they don't pay any bills to maintain the home. They use solar power instead of being hooked up to hydro. They collect their rain water instead of being hooked up to municipal water. They store energy from the sun in the thermal mass of their home instead of having a furnace. They use a composting toilet instead of paying to install and maintain a septic system. And they treat their own greywater (from the kitchen & shower) on site. There is a fireplace in the home, but the couple says they only use it a few times per year for atmosphere, and they don't depend on it as a heat source. The couple even grow a lot of their own food in their indoor planter, like tomatoes, sweet potatoes, bananas, carrots - you name it! The planter also stores energy from the sun to help maintain a stable temperature in the home. The first earth ships were built in New Mexico by Mike Reynolds, and while many people think they're amazing, they don't believe that earthships can be built in harsher environments (like in Canada for example). This earth ship is built near Lake Erie, in Ontario, Canada. It did take a few years for the home to absorb all of the thermal energy it needed to maintain a stable year-round temperature, but now that it's had time to cure and mature, it's working great. Mat and I were completely blown away when we walked into the house and realized how incredibly well the house was performing without any of the traditional inputs we're used to seeing in a conventional home. We enjoyed the feeling of being outdoors that the house provides with the natural light, curved walls, and luscious greenery. The recycled bottle walls are spectacular, too. Gabriel Parent-Leblanc heats his tiny house with an awesome solar air heater. He built his tiny house to prove it was possible to live in a tiny house year round in a northern climate. Not only did he succeed (he's been living in it for almost 2 years) but he also has one of the smallest heating bills I've ever seen. In the winter of 2014/2015, which was one of the coldest in the last 100 years, he spent only $100 on heat thanks to his solar air heater panel which provided the bulk of his heat during the day. Gabriel built his own tiny house with the help of friends and also started the first tiny house company in Quebec, Canada: Habitations MicroÉvolution: http://www.habitationsmicro.com/ The solar air heater he uses is distributed by EcoSolaris and they're planning to release a new and improved model very soon (we filmed a video about it for you, coming soon!): http://www.ecosolaris.ca/en/products_and_services/solar-air-heating-system.php At night, Gabriel uses an electric heater that is plugged into an energy meter to track how much energy he uses for heat. This isn't the exact meter he used but it was something like this: https://www.amazon.com/UPM-Marketing-EM100-Energy-Display/dp/B000RKVK52 His tiny house design was focussed on creating a spacious and comfortable living room with a massive u-shaped sitting area that has the option to put up a table up to make it a dinette, or put down the table to make it an extra bed. He's also got a galley kitchen, a sleeping loft, storage loft, and small bathroom with a shower and composting toilet. The fact that Gabriel's house is run almost completely on solar power is pretty impressive. He's got 750 Watts on his roof that power the lights, fridge, water pump, and all of his electrical outlets; and his solar air heating panel provides a lot of his heating needs. While he is living almost completely off grid in a suburb of Montreal, one thing Gabriel does find challenging is his small water tank. It only holds 100 litres so he often has to re-fill it with a hose. With his metal roof he could probably install a rainwater catchment system to provide some of his water needs. You can find out more about Gabriel's tiny house business and his workshops here: http://www.habitationsmicro.com/en/produit/tiny-house-workshop-presentations/ You can also follow Gabriel on YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC_ExGqlPYJSdwnsqSuGTnJA For anyone interested in the products Gabriel mentioned in the video (his trailer, the vertical planter, tiny house plans, natural wood oil), check out his store here: http://www.habitationsmicro.com/en/boutique/ Thanks for watching! Twenty years ago Andrew Michler bought a $60,000 solar shack in the Colorado mountains that “immediately fell apart” and inspired two decades of experiments in off-grid living. Today, he and his wife live in the reconfigured shack and he has turned a former shed on the property into an ultra low-consuming Passive House (Passivhaus). “Passive House is an international building standard that focuses on how to reduce energy consumption in building by about 90% and they did it by physics really it wasn’t developed by builders it was developed by physicists,” explains Michler. “Everything how a building interacts with its environment, the thermal dynamics of how heat transfers through materials, the way that energy is produced in the building, how solar gains come into the building or are avoided in a building so this entire building is basically designed in a spreadsheet.” The home is shaped in a wedge which helps with passive solar orientation and also helps avoid unnecessary surface area and heat loss. The wedge also contributes to an unconventional open plan interior which includes a hanging net bed. Green Home Design - Learn about Passive House Design - Best Sustainable Home Design Ideas IN this video your will learn about how to build a passive house (PassivHaus). The term passive house (Passivhaus in German) refers to a rigorous, voluntary standard for energy efficiency in a building, reducing its ecological footprint. It results in ultra-low energy buildings that require little energy for space heating or cooling. The design of a green home based on a passive house concept is based on a number of key sustainable design principles. The design should be based on a passive solar design and landscape, use superinsulation for maximum energy efficiency, have advanced window technology to prevent thermal bridges, it should be airtight, make extensive use of passive ventilation strategies, use waste heat from appliances in the home to provide space heating, and utilise energy efficient appliances. This sustainable green home demonstrates a number of important design aspects required for efficient and comfortable living including sustainable architecture, green home planning, insulation in walls and roofs, energy efficient appliances, energy efficient lighting, passive heating and cooling of the home, solar hot water, rain water harvesting, and water recycling all combine to create a green home that is comfortable all year round with an abundance of fresh air and natural lighting - it is the essence of sustainable living. On the desert mesa of New Mexico, miles from the nearest town of Taos (pop. 5,700), Star-Wars-like shelters rise from the earth, half-buried and covered in adobe. Called “Earthships” - brainchild of architect Mike Reynolds in the 1970s- they’re nearly completely self-sufficient homes: no electrical grid, no water lines, no sewer. The Greater World Earthship Community, about 70 passive solar homes built from earth and trash on 633 acres, had a rough start; they were shut down as an illegal subdivision in 1997 and it took them 7 years to come to compliance. Though today, the county fully cooperates with Reynolds and his Earthship Biotecture operation to turn trash (tires, cans, glass bottles) into shelters and has even given them 2 acres to experiment with housing in anyway they like (they also provide their recycling). Sixteen years ago, Tom Duke had just finished over a decade on the pro volleyball circuit when he bought a bit of land here with his wife and began to build a tiny Earthship the size of a storage shed. When their first son was born they built their dream house on the property, a two bedroom that, like other Earthships, collects rainwater, uses its water four times (the plants in the indoor greenhouse filter the greywater) and even processes its own sewage. In this video, Tom takes us on a tour of his home, his original “Earthship survival pod”, the “nest” ($50,000 studio apartment), the “Simple Survival Earthship” (aimed mainly at the developing world), a custom home designed to feed a family of four (including a tilapia pond in the greenhouse) and the “BMW of Earthships”, the “Global" (aimed at the typical American family). Get more info here about the research conducted in the Sustainable Energy Planning Group at Aalborg University: http://www.EnergyPLAN.eu -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Smart Energy Systems: 100% Renewable Energy at a National Level (Full Version) Denmark has decided to become independent from fossil fuels. For the sake of the climate, the economy, and in order to ensure security of energy supply. This film shows how this will happen based on research conducted at Aalborg University (http://www.smartenergysystems.eu). At present wind and solar energy already delivers a good share of Denmark's energy, but renewable energy is a major challenge for an energy system that is built upon fossil fuels. Energy production from wind and solar fluctuates - it fluctuates as the wind blows. So what renewables are reliable when there is no sun or wind energy available? Another challenge is the transport sector. How do we create an energy system of renewable energy, where also cars, ships and planes can operate on fossil-free energy? A great example of an energy system that will ensure Denmark a 100% renewable energy system is called: Smart Energy Systems - a coherent, fossil-free energy system that will create lots of new jobs and green energy for the Danes, both in terms of electricity, heat and transport. Techstyle Haus was one of the innovative entries in the recently concluded Solar Decathlon Europe 2014. The small house was created by a team of students from the Rhode Island School of Design, Brown University and the University of Applied Sciences Erfurt. Wanting to try something different, the team decided to build a passive house using a textile roof. The tent-like appearance might give the impression that the roof is thin and flimsy, but it actually consists of several layers including nearly 12 inches of mineral wool insulation. The outer covering is a Teflon-coated fiberglass membrane typically used for sports stadiums and designed to resist high winds. The thick blanket of insulation along with triple-paned windows, air-tight construction, and design elements such as the generous overhang shading the south windows all work together to reduce the home’s heating and cooling requirements by 90 percent compared to typical construction, meeting the Passivhaus standard. Topping the roof are a high-efficiency photovoltaic system and solar water heater, which together collect more energy than the house uses. The roof is stretched over five curved steel ribs that span the house without any intermediate supporting posts or walls. That left the 76.7 m2 (825 ft2) interior wide open, providing flexibility in how the space is used. The Techstyle Haus team opted for an open one-bedroom plus loft floor plan, concentrating the mechanical components into a technical core containing the kitchen, bathroom and laundry. The gently curved surfaces give the interior an attractive organic appearance. The success of any off grid homestead starts with the design of your home! Part 2 addresses further this concept. Today Starry talks about HEATING the house and the beauty of the thermal mass and their woodstove! AND not only the heating, but FREE air conditioning!!! A Passive solar design takes advantage of a building’s site, climate, and materials to minimize energy use. A well-designed passive solar home first reduces heating and cooling loads through energy-efficiency strategies and then meets those reduced loads in whole or part with solar energy. Passive design is practiced throughout the world and has been shown to produce buildings with low energy costs, reduced maintenance, and superior comfort. DO not overlook this key point when going off the grid. IF YOU have the opportunity to design and build your own home...THINK before you build. Earthships are AMAZING simple living houses!! They are intuitive, sustainable, and efficient in providing a comfortable habitat for human living. The technology of an earthship house is both sophisticated and simple. Here are some of an Earthship's amazing abilities: 1. It's practical use of energy and natural resources. The Earthship's need for water, electricity, or other (potential fossil fuel energy) is greatly reduced by it brilliant ability to optimize everything from the environment it's in. This includes harvesting electricity from wind turbines and solar panels to provide all electric needs for basic machinery such as water pumps and venting systems. 2. The use of solar energy radiant heat. 3. The ability to harvest, clean, recycle, and process all of it's fresh water and waste water needs. 4. The use of Earth's mass to aid in providing its heating and cooling needs. 5. It's ability to create an oasis of plant growth from it's creative use of waste water, even in harsh environments such as a desert. 6. It's ability to produce food by it's creative use of fresh water fish tanks and greenhouse garden planters. Like these design videos? See the basics of solar greenhouse design. At CERES we design and build year-round greenhouses that save energy and water. These combine passive solar design with some active elements like ground to air heat transfer (GAHT) system which allows the greenhouse to provide it's own source of heating and cooling. Our greenhouses use highly insulated walls and a polycarbonate roof for maximum energy-efficiency. The result is an incredibly durable greenhouse that is durable, automated, self-sustaining, and naturally abundant (ie no heating costs) year-round.

Plans: https://permies.com/t/74059f7/Solar-Dehydrator-Plans The first solar dehydrator is shown by robert and marina at dell artimus farm. The solar heat comes from a heated panel at the bottom, and there is a black chimney at the top that creates a draw. They use a stainless steel screen. The dryer is a year and a half old. They have dried beans, flowers, cherries, grapes (raisins), kale, walnuts and apples. They tried some tomatoes, but those ended up as pig food. Matt at feral farm shows a "down draft solar dehydrator." The solar heat enters at the top and then goes down. Because as it gathers moisture, the solar heated air gets heavier. He has nettles in there. Mark Vander Meer, of wildland conservation service in Missoula, Montana shows off his solar food dehydrator still loaded with dried plums. Those plums have been in there all fall, winter and most of the spring. He talks about trying to dry fruit with electric food dehydrators and how expensive that was. This solar dehydrator also uses the down draft technique. He says plums take three days and apples take a day and a half. These are all passive systems. In this video, we tour a mini earth ship style cabin at the Terra Perma community (http://terraperma.ca/en) to learn how the building is designed to produce heat, water, and power; all while being 100% off-grid. The interior design of the tiny house is not only functional, but incredibly beautiful as well: It features relief cob sculptures on the interior walls, a dazzling recycled bottle wall, and floor to ceiling south facing windows. The tiny home away from home was built using over 200 recycled tires that were filled with earth and stacked in a semi circle to create the main wall of the cabin. This wall was then covered (backfilled) with a mound of earth to create a thermal mass that will store energy from the sun and help keep the home at a stable temperature year-round. To mitigate temperature fluctuations, there is a wood stove and radiant in-floor heating for cold months, and when it's warm out, there's a low-tech air conditioning system that cools indoor air by circulating it through a pipe that is buried under the mound of earth at the back of the house, and bringing it back into the house at a cooler temperature. The metal roof is built on an angle to optimize rainwater collection (their rainwater ducts had not yet been installed when we were there), and the overhang at the front provides shade to the structure during the summer to avoid overheating. To power the in-floor heating system, the air pump, the lights, and the electrical outlets, there is a 1000 Watt solar power system installed behind the cabin. You'll notice that there is no toilet or shower inside the earthship. To keep things simple they built an outhouse toilet, and a communal shower block for all of the eco-lodges (kind of like what you'd find at a campground). Terrasol is one of several miniature green building structures at Terra Perma that are rented to the public as vacation rentals. They're also a great way for people to experience living in different types of sustainable, hand built structures to see what living off grid is like. In addition to the earthship, they have a mini cob and straw bale house, 2 yurts, a tiny house, and a mini cordwood cabin. Terra Perma has property lots for sale for anyone who wishes to live in the permaculture community, and they also have cooperative business opportunities for eco-entrepreneurs. Mat and I met Elan from Terra Perma during the tiny house festival in Lantier, Quebec in July 2016 and adjusted our filming schedule to stop by and check out the super cool buildings he was helping to put up in Harrington, Quebec, Canada. We camped in our van at Terra Perma for 2 nights and had fun exploring their mini sustainable buildings, swimming in their private lake, and tasting their homemade maple syrup! On a steep lot that was initially considered to be unbuildable, a dedicated team of design professionals produced the first LEED-certified-Platinum home in Marin County, California. Nice trick. But how did they do it? http://www.us.kohler.com/built-green/index.jsp Like good magicians, the team took care to keep the backstage machinery well out of the spotlight. As builder Michael McDonald says, "We try to make the sustainability aspect of it disappear." That artfully hidden green technology includes in-floor hydronic heating, a solar array that provides 60% of the home's electricity, LED lighting, cabinetry and floors made from sustainably harvested woods -even the roof is made of recycled metals. Take a revealing look behind the scenes at a home that stands at the very apex of sustainable design.
