A spring-like day in January on the Canal in Columbia, SC. Bike rides are great down there, scenery is beautiful. Canal originally built in 1820 and expanded in 1891 with a diversion dam on the Broad River. The SC State Museum on Gervais St. benefited from this canal when a power plant was built there in 1896, making it the first factory in the world to be powered with electricity.

Plan your Lake Superior Day event for July 20, 2008 celebrate world's largest, cleanest freshwater lake There's nothing like the crystal clear waters of Lake Superior in the summertime. Lake Superior Day 2008 is right around the corner. Make your plans now to celebrate Lake Superior. The world's largest, cleanest freshwater lake will be honored on July 20, 2008 The Chippewa Indian translation, Gichigami, signifies Great Water. According to Native American Ojibwa lore, it is protected by Nanabijou, Spirit of the Deep Sea Water. If you can't come up with an idea on how to celebrate Lake Superior - we can help. Organizers have ideas for anglers, boaters, local governments, American Indian tribes, faith communities, environmental groups, libraries & small/large business. For example, beach cleans ups have been held by the Zen Buddist and other faith communities in northern Michigan. Sitting on the shores of Lake Superior in Marquette, two interfaith organizers reflect on the importance of this superior lake. Individuals, families, churches, kids, communities, clubs, businesses and industries hold events that celebrate Lake Superior Day, held annually on the third Sunday in July. Do something that symbolizes your connection to the lake on July 20. Become part of celebrations that will encircle Lake Superior. Lake Superior Day started in the early 1990s to show how it's vital to the environment & economy. The Lake Superior Binational Forum (LSBF) promotes this basin-wide event. Many events have been held to educate/entertain people about lake issues, special places, & recreational opportunities. You're invited to hold activities/events that celebrate this world-class lake. The lake 's surface covers 31,700 square miles, about the size of South Carolina. The lake is so big it could hold all the water from the other four Great Lakes, plus three more lakes the size of Lake Erie. In 1985, scientists using a submersible vessel descended for the first time to the deepest part, near the Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore. Lake Superior 's deepest point is 1,332 feet, which would almost cover the Sears Tower in Chicago. The lake stretches approx. 350 miles from west to east, & 160 miles north to south. If you could travel the entire Lake Superior shoreline, you 'd go 1,826 miles, the distance from Duluth to San Francisco. This year's theme "Let's Go Fly a Kite" symbolizes clean energy sources. For more info about flying a kite Lake Superior Day: http://www.superiorforum.info/uploads/Kite_Poster.pdf Last year almost 45 groups/communities held special events like dragon boat races, beach clean ups, musical concerts, library displays, church services, and signed proclamations.. On Lake Superior Day 2007, classical musicians from around the Great Lakes debuted the Boreal Chamber Symphony in Marquette, MI sponsored by the Upper Peninsula Earth Keepers. COLUMBIA, SC (WIS) - State Attorney General Henry McMaster is pushing legislators to get rid of parole for South Carolina criminals. McMaster began a two-day trip around the state on Tuesday morning to announce his effort to abolish parole in the state. McMaster first visited North Charleston, and then traveled to Columbia and Greenville. A stop in Horry County was planned for Wednesday. McMaster says abolishing parole for all crimes will help people feel safer by giving them confidence that criminals will stay behind bars until they've completed their sentences. McMaster, long an advocate of abolishing parole, has been studying the possibility of accomplishing that goal for the state's crime victims for over two years. During that time, he has consulted with judges, victim advocates, legislators, state prison officials and officials from the state of Virginia, where the change has produced results. The United States Congress eliminated parole for inmates beginning in 1987, and Virginia did the same in 1994. In Virginia, the result has been an overall reduction in that state's prison population growth. Between 1985 and 1995, Virginia's prison population increased by 154 percent. Between 1995 and 2004, however, the prison population grew by only 31 percent. McMaster explained that the public's confidence in the judicial system is damaged unnecessarily when a judge imposes a sentence on a convicted person, only to have that same convict eligible for release a short time later - after serving as little as 25 percent of their sentence. "The public must have confidence in the criminal justice system, and that confidence is steadily eroded by parole," said McMaster in a written news release. "Abolishing parole would return a judge's power to impose a true and meaningful sentence, and the victims of crime and the public would know what that sentence means." "Today, no one really knows how long a convict will actually be behind bars, and that decision is removed from the judge and placed in the hands of a nearly anonymous parole board," McMaster continued. A second effect of abolishing parole would be that appropriate non-violent offenders would likely receive fewer jail sentences, and would instead receive alternative sentences that would focus on education and job training, a model McMaster has described as a "Middle Court." Currently, a number of counties already divert these kinds of offenders to similar programs through "Drug Courts." A second law would be needed to create this program for the entire state once parole has been abolished. The No Parole bill will be pre-filed in the House by Judiciary Committee Chairman Jim Harrison (Richland), and in the Senate by Senator Larry Martin (Pickens). But the Director of the state Department of Corrections says he'd support a bill -- but only if the state legislature would be willing to pay for all the new measures. "Even under our current truth in sentencing and no parole laws, we need to increase funding to the Department of Corrections or implement changes to our sentencing structure, this year," said Corrections Director Jon Ozmint. "We have a long history of under-funding corrections and we have experienced court-ordered releases in the past. We must be careful not to pass laws with no willingness to pay for the costs of those laws." Ozmint said the state should only adopt new laws if there is a corresponding willingness to pay for the laws.

St. Helena Island is a magical place on the South Carolina coastline where African American men and women have farmed this land and fished this water for centuries--first as plantation slaves, then as freedmen. It's now one of the last communities on the East Coast that hasn't been swallowed up by development and tourism. But St. Helena's way of life is at a crossroads. Watch and see how farmers and fishermen have adapted to the modern world and whether they would be able to pass this rich heritage to the next generation.

As South Carolina deals with deadly, 1,000-year flooding caused by Hurricane Joaquin this weekend, a strange, grim effect of the deluge is being felt throughout the area: coffins are surfacing and floating in the floodwaters. With the heavy rainfall and floodwaters having completely saturated the soil at the coffins depth, the pressure from the water pushes the coffins through the surface where they can be swept away by flood waters. The floodwaters can spread toxic chemicals used in formaldehyde and other chemicals used for embalming. http://feeds.mashable.com/~r/Mashable/~3/42omKihcG6g/ http://www.wochit.com This video was produced by Wochit using http://wochit.com

https://www.expedia.com/explore/greater-sacramento/lake-tahoe.d180041 Filled with over 39 trillion gallons of pure Sierra snowmelt and pushed a mile into the Californian and Nevada skies, Lake Tahoe is the USA’s largest alpine lake and one of the country’s oldest, year-round vacation playgrounds. Lake Tahoe has forever drawn travellers to its shores, from the Native Americans who call this place Big Water, to the trappers, timber cutters and pioneers who followed. When you’re ready for a little alpine magic, take the four-hour drive from San Francisco to the sunlit shores of Kings Beach. Set on Tahoe’s northern end, this beach was named after local card shark, Joe King, who used his winnings to develop some of the lake’s earliest lodgings. On the lake’s southern shore, is Pope Beach, where you’ll find another Tahoe institution, Camp Richardson. From Pope Beach follow the bike path to the Taylor Creek Visitor Center. An open-air classroom for the entire family, the center features fabulous interpretative walks such as the Rainbow Trail. Nearby, at DL Bliss State Park, follow the spectacular Rubicon Trail into neighboring Emerald Bay State Park. This park is home to the Eagle Falls Trail, a moderate two-mile hike that takes in some of the Sierra high country’s finest views. When the ponderosa pines bend with the season’s first snow, Tahoe transforms into the nation’s favorite winter playground. Whether you’re looking for snow-capped peaks or crystal clear coves, places to bond with loved ones or pockets of pure solitude, The Lake in the Sky has it all.

http://democracynow.org - It has been nearly six months since voters in North Carolina elected Democrat Roy Cooper as governor. Republican lawmakers responded by waging what many described as a legislative coup to strip away much of Cooper’s power. Meanwhile, Republicans in North Carolina are attempting to solidify their legislative power by passing a series of new laws to restrict voting rights. This comes despite a report by the Electoral Integrity Project that determined that North Carolina’s democratic institutions are so flawed the state should no longer be considered a functioning democracy. Fall Colors Hika at Kings Mountain South Carolina! Hiked from Kings Mountain National Park in South Carolina to Lake Crawford. The hike is about 6 miles round trip. We wanted to check out some fall colors. Original plan was to head out to Crowders Mountain but ended up here. It was a pretty good hike, not a very difficult one however very scenic. Lake Crawford has a small waterfall / dam built, but only has water falling over it when there has been a lot of rain. During this trip the water was still and waterfall was dry. We got to see some beautiful fall colors. I tried to capture some of the scenic shots. Kings Mountain Drone shots were captured by the Lake Crawford. Hope you enjoyed it! TCLF's latest conference, Leading with Landscape IV: Transforming North Carolina's Research Triangle, was held on April 13, 2018, at the James B. Hunt, Jr., Library at North Carolina State University in Raleigh. Topics explored include the regionally unique coupling of human and natural systems, how the area’s campus landscapes are serving as “incubators” for innovative planning and design solutions, new projects that are re-evaluating the region’s monuments and memorials, two revered public landscapes—Moore Square and Dix Park—and much more. To learn more about the conference: https://tclf.org/sites/default/files/microsites/raleigh2018/index.html Panelist - Panel II: The Research Triangle’s Emerging Public Realm and the Story of The New South Gina Ford, FASLA, Principal, Agency Landscape + Planning The Grove’s Third Century; Sasaki’s Revitalization of Raleigh’s Moore Square As one of three remaining squares from William Christmas’ foundational Plan for Raleigh (1792), Moore Square has a rich and storied history. Visually connected to the Old Market and punctuating Raleigh’s ‘Black Main Street’, Moore Square is a place of memory and culture. Often referred to as ‘The Grove’ – a nod to the majestic oaks that line its edges – the Square had suffered from a shortage of maintenance and various cycles of overuse/abuse from large-scale events. Despite these challenges, it remained central to the identity and image of the city, its revitalization rising to the top of all civic planning, including the recent Downtown Plan. Led by Sasaki and under construction now, Moore Square’s renovation will create a vibrant yet sensitive place in Raleigh’s thriving downtown – an activated public space with activities and amenities to appeal to a broad array of users. The project preserves essential elements of the extant square – its legacy oaks, historic circulation patterns and visual connections to its urban frame – while introducing new features to enhance vitality. A cafe building with restrooms, an interactive water feature, whimsical play elements, a large civic plaza, integrated art elements, extensive seating and large lawn are among the new civic infrastructure to enable the park’s success. As the project’s lead designer – working closely with the City of Raleigh, Sasaki, artist Brad Goldberg, landscape architect Kofi Boone, The Cultural Landscape Foundation, Mary Ruffin Hanbury of Hanbury Preservation Consulting, Bartlett Tree Experts, HR&A Advisors, Fluidity Design and Kimley-Horn - will discuss the process of seeing, understanding and incorporating the Square’s cultural traces in the final design.

https://www.paypal.me/THORnews Category 3 Hurricane Maria is the third Hurricane to make landfall on a US territory this year. She is doing major damage to Puerto Rico right now & then where she goes no one really knows. With hybrid nor-easter Jose set to churn next to the Eastern Seaboard for days, it only gets more complicated. So plan & Prepare now for the worst case scenario. God bless everyone, T https://www.paypal.me/THORnews @newTHOR on twitter https://www.facebook.com/thornewsgo articles on Maria https://www.wunderground.com/cat6/maria-back-over-water-after-devastating-hit-puerto-rico Maria Back Over Water After Devastating Hit to Puerto Rico Forecast for Maria Satellite imagery late Wednesday showed that Maria’s eye was already beginning to clear out after becoming cloud-filled during its path across Puerto Rico. Maria will be traversing very warm sea surface temperatures (SSTs) of around 29°C into the weekend, and there is substantial oceanic heat content along its path that will help keep Maria from churning up cooler water that might dent its strength (see Figure 3 below). Wind shear around Maria will remain less than 10 knots into Thursday, which also suggests restrengthening; also, there are no large masses of dry air that would impede growth. Starting late Friday, wind shear is predicted to increase to the 15 – 20 knot range; this would suppress further strengthening and might eventually weaken Maria. Moreover, at least part of Maria’s circulation will pass over the cold wake left by Jose (see Figure 3), which may also cut into Maria’s strength somewhat. These conditions suggest Maria will become at least a mid-strength Category 3 hurricane with 120 mph winds, and has a shot to regain Category 4 status. Maria will be steered northwest and eventually north over the next five days, around the edge of an upper-level ridge situated to its east. By Monday, Maria is expected to be a strong Category 2 or 3 hurricane positioned several hundred miles southeast of the North Carolina coast, and the Outer Banks of North Carolina are close to being in NHC’s 5-day cone of unceratinty. In the subsequent 5- to 7-day forecast range, there is more uncertainty than usual on how close Maria might get to the U.S. East Coast, since the hurricane’s track will depend upon how fast Jose decays, and where Jose moves. As Tropical Storm Jose weakens (see below), it is possible that the Atlantic ridge could build west and block Maria’s progress, forcing the storm to move toward the north-northwest to a landfall between North Carolina and New Jersey. Alternatively, a trough of low pressure passing to the north of Maria next week, in combination with the remains of Jose, may pull Maria to the east northeast without the storm making landfall along the mid-Atlantic coast. In this case, though, Maria might still be a threat to New England—particularly Southeast Massachusetts—or possibly the Canadian maritime provinces. Maria would most likely be at tropical storm strength in this scenario, due to the cool waters north of North Carolina. Jose spinning down south of New England Downgraded late Tuesday after more than 12 days at hurricane strength, Tropical Storm Jose continued its ever-so-gradual weakening off the coast of New England on Wednesday. At 2 pm EDT, Jose was located about 140 miles south-southeast of Nantucket, Massachusetts. Jose’s top sustained winds were 70 mph, just below hurricane force, but a broad field of tropical-storm-force winds extended more than 200 miles south of Jose’s center. A NOAA buoy about 65 miles southeast of Nantucket notched winds of 40 mph, gusting to 52 mph. Top winds as of 2 pm at Nantucket’s airport were a mere 32 mph, gusting to 43 mph, and just 0.54” of rain had fallen since midnight. Although Jose bears some resemblance to a nor’easter or a hybrid storm on satellite, phase-space diagrams from Florida State University show that it remains a warm-core tropical cyclone. Tropical storm warnings remained in effect Wednesday afternoon for the outermost islands of southeast New England. Most of Jose’s modest rainbands were located west of its large eye, with a few brushing southeastern Massachusetts. Models agree that Jose will continue its slow decline over waters that are too cool to sustain a tropical cyclone. Now moving northeast at 7 mph, Jose is expected to slow down and then begin looping back westward on Thursday. The official NHC forecast holds Jose stationary near 70°W longitude as a weakening post-tropical cyclone from Saturday through Monday. The 12Z run of the European model goes with the stationary solution. However, the GFS, HWRF, and HMON models keep Jose or its remnants heading west, reaching New Jersey late Sunday or Monday with minimal impact other than some breezy showers.

Despite outperforming most districts in the state, Horry County Schools (HCS) realized they could do more to raise academic achievement for all students. Education Elements started our work with HCS by developing a personalized learning instructional model and support plan for one pilot middle school. That led to creating a strategy and supporting the design, implementation, and roll-out of personalized learning across the district. His parents came to America from Cuba in 1956 to pursue a better life. His father became a bartender, and his mother became a cashier, a maid and a Kmart stock clerk. Growing up in Las Vegas and Miami, Marco watched how his parents worked hard and sacrificed to give their children a life better than their own. They never made it big, but they were successful. They achieved the American Dream. And that is why he is running for president. For too many people, the American Dream feels impossible. Opportunity and success seems far away. But Marco has worked tirelessly to restore the hope and promise that the American Dream is real and that every American can achieve their own unique version of that dream. As U.S. Senator, Marco has led a bold offensive to institute innovative, conservative ideas to address the fundamental issues our country is facing and to restore hope in the American Dream. His ideas are firmly rooted in this simple truth – the American economy has changed significantly in recent decades and our policies must change with it. He has proposed conservative reforms to our nation’s anti-poverty laws, tax code, regulatory policies, higher education system, vital senior safety net programs and national defense. For Marco, this country has provided him so much -- the chance to graduate from the University of Florida and then the University of Miami’s law school. The chance to marry his wife Jeanette in 1998, with whom he is raising four children: Amanda, Daniella, Anthony and Dominick. And the chance for both of them to give back through public service as a West Miami city commissioner; a Florida state legislator that rose to become majority whip, majority leader and speaker of the house; and since 2011, as a U.S. Senator. For all the opportunities this country has provided Marco and his family, including all that Jeanette has accomplished through her charitable work, he is indebted to this great country. He believes that he owes America for the opportunities that this country has given him and his family. He believes the American Dream is still possible for all Americans. But make no mistake: it will require new leadership and a bold conservative reform agenda built for the 21st century. Join Marco today to reclaim the American Dream and make sure this century becomes a New American Century. NOTE: If you need captions, please click the CC button on the player to turn them on. This video describes the restoration of Long Creek, a small watershed of Casco Bay, in southern Maine, that was impaired because of runoff from impervious surfaces. The watershed is being restored using a collective stormwater permitting approach which was applied to raise revenue for stormwater treatment systems (BMPs). This innovative approach stemmed from results of watershed assessments, and determination by EPA under the residual designation authority of the Clean Water Act. We interview key environmental professionals from various agencies, a facilitator and landowners, to describe the process for getting landowners to work together to develop the Long Creek Watershed Management Plan and participate in this cost effective permitting approach. Landowners describe the efforts to restore the watershed, and the benefits of the project. RnK spend a few days in South Carolina for the Fourth of July and make some time to hit up the rarely explored South Carolina State Hospital Lunatic Asylum. This was risky explore, we came across a homeless persons set up and an entire floor that was locked off, the only floor we could not enter and we can only assume it was some other homeless persons set up. This was a cool adventure especially since I have never been to South Carolina. Founded in 1821, it was one of the first public mental hospitals established in the United States. The hospital had more than 1,000 patients in 1900, but with the transition of mental health facilities to community settings, it is now much smaller, occupying a small portion of its campus, with other parts housing offices and facilities of the state's Department of Mental Health. Most of the facilities have been demolished and other projects are coming into effect know like parks, a baseball stadium (that you see in this vid) and some other community developments I am sure.
