What is STRATEGIC MANAGEMENT? What does STRATEGIC MANAGEMENT mean? STRATEGIC MANAGEMENT meaning - STRATEGIC MANAGEMENT definition - STRATEGIC MANAGEMENT explanation. Source: Wikipedia.org article, adapted under https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0/ license. Strategic management involves the formulation and implementation of the major goals and initiatives taken by a company's top management on behalf of owners, based on consideration of resources and an assessment of the internal and external environments in which the organization competes. Strategic management provides overall direction to the enterprise and involves specifying the organization's objectives, developing policies and plans designed to achieve these objectives, and then allocating resources to implement the plans. Academics and practicing managers have developed numerous models and frameworks to assist in strategic decision making in the context of complex environments and competitive dynamics. Strategic management is not static in nature; the models often include a feedback loop to monitor execution and inform the next round of planning. Michael Porter identifies three principles underlying strategy: creating a "unique and valuable position", making trade-offs by choosing "what not to do", and creating "fit" by aligning company activities with one another to support the chosen strategy. Dr. Vladimir Kvint defines strategy as "a system of finding, formulating, and developing a doctrine that will ensure long-term success if followed faithfully." Corporate strategy involves answering a key question from a portfolio perspective: "What business should we be in?" Business strategy involves answering the question: "How shall we compete in this business?" In management theory and practice, a further distinction is often made between strategic management and operational management. Operational management is concerned primarily with improving efficiency and controlling costs within the boundaries set by the organization's strategy. Strategic management involves the formulation and implementation of the major goals and initiatives taken by a company's top management on behalf of owners, based on consideration of resources and an assessment of the internal and external environments in which the organization competes. Strategy is defined as "the determination of the basic long-term goals of an enterprise, and the adoption of courses of action and the allocation of resources necessary for carrying out these goals." Strategies are established to set direction, focus effort, define or clarify the organization, and provide consistency or guidance in response to the environment. Strategic management involves the related concepts of strategic planning and strategic thinking. Strategic planning is analytical in nature and refers to formalized procedures to produce the data and analyses used as inputs for strategic thinking, which synthesizes the data resulting in the strategy. Strategic planning may also refer to control mechanisms used to implement the strategy once it is determined. In other words, strategic planning happens around the strategic thinking or strategy making activity. Strategic management is often described as involving two major processes: formulation and implementation of strategy. While described sequentially below, in practice the two processes are iterative and each provides input for the other.

Is it possible to look ahead without stumbling over what’s in front of you? All too often companies spend precious time laying out long term strategic plans, only to discover that their maps are out of date in a month. Business strategy expert Martin Reeves offers a solution. He advocates transitioning from relying on a single "classical" approach to strategy and moving towards a more tailored approach to strategy and execution, selecting from 5 distinct patterns of success. Martin leads The Strategy Institute, BCG’s vehicle for exploring ideas from beyond the world of business, which have implications for business strategy. Current research themes include meta-strategy, evidence-based transformation, corporate longevity and strategies of sustainability. Martin joined BCG in London in 1989 and later moved to Tokyo, where he led the Japan health care practice for eight years and was responsible for BCG’s business with Western clients. He has led strategy assignments in healthcare, consumer goods, financial services, and industrial goods in Japan, the US, and Europe. He has authored numerous articles on strategy, a book on “Adaptive Advantage” and another – “Your Strategy Needs a Strategy” – will be published by Harvard Business Press in Spring 2015. About the TED Institute: We know that innovative ideas and fresh approaches to challenging problems can be discovered inside visionary companies around the world. The TED Institute helps surface and share these insights. Every year, TED works with a group of select brands to identify internal ideators, inventors, connectors, and creators. Marketing strategies, marketing strategy and marketing plan consultant Brian Tucker helps companies improve marketing and selling strategies to SimplySell®. Subscribe and follow our channel! Visit http://simplysell.com/ for a free consultation. Hi- I'm Brian Tucker with SimplySell and I took some time to create this video because I know every month thousands of corporate executives and established business owners around the world search the internet, looking for answers to questions they have -- about how to come up with a winning marketing strategy -- so they can sell more of their products or services, faster and easier. These days, it's really easy for people to search for answers online and try to figure out what might work before they call on a professional to help 'em out. They're usually looking for fast solutions, because they're trying to find that one magic bullet, hoping it will bring them big results, and put more money in the bank, seemingly overnight. A lot of successful people find themselves in this position because they already know what marketing is but don't have the time or resources to do it because they're too busy working in their business. Then there's the group of people who've spent a lot of time and money trying market on their own and failed to see results. Finally, a lot of people don't even know where to start. You see most people think advertising is marketing, but it's not. Then you have the group of people who are frustrated because they've either spent a LOT of time and money with advertising firms that focus more on winning creative awards than bringing business in the door, or they're using overpriced ad campaigns and marketing techniques that just aren't working like they used to. You see in the past, all a business needed was some phone book or radio advertising to start bringing buyers in the door. Nowadays, with Internet search engines — like Google or Yahoo — and social media technology like Facebook and YouTube taking over, most businesses are looking online to supplement and even replace traditional advertising methods including newspapers and tv. Then there's the poor soul who's stuck with an awful looking website, with no visitors and paying big money for the equivalent of a billboard in the middle of a desert. Finally, you have everyone out there claiming to be a search engine optimization expert or SEO guru, telling you that your business needs to be at the "top of Google", leaving you with overpriced, here today gone tomorrow empty promises. And just like these businesses -- chances are you're searching online for answers right now -- because your business is also suffering from some of these same types of problems. Maybe you've already tried to solve a few of these problems, either on your own and it didn't work and you're looking for someone who can help you figure all of this out so you can start winning more sales and bringing in the money you should be earning... Fast. But you don't need just someone, you need someone who also understands marketing, someone who speaks marketing and business fluently, who really understands the business behind marketing and will drive immediate, even overnight changes to the way you market your products or services, so you can focus on growing your business. Well luckily you're still watching, because we help executives and established business owners just like you solve these kinds of problems and make big improvements to the way your company markets your products or services, so you can attract more customers, win more sales without trying so hard and grow without the pain most businesses face. We can help you build a winning marketing strategy that will work for your business -- without half-baked solutions, flashy advertising and techno buzzwords -- and instead tap into real-live systems we're using with similar clients right now, as well as data-backed reports that will show before and after results. Big results, using push-button systems that will start going to work for you on what seem like autopilot and pay you back. We take a very simple approach that focuses only on time-proven strategies that will bring you measureable and long-term results because we understand one thing very well: If you fail to sell more products and services then we've failed too. That's our #1 priority, helping you win more sales so you can ultimately make more money." So, if you're serious about making changes to the way your business approaches marketing, and need someone who can make it happen, you're in luck. Leadership Strategies Head over to: http://www.joniyoung.com/tv07/ and leave your comments we would love to hear from you Today is the day we will cover Strategic Planning, this can apply in your business and life. What is Strategic Planning? Here’s the definition… It is a process initiated by an ENTITY to establish a PLAN for accomplishment of the overall GOALS. Are you bored yet? I know I am. Ok. Let’s break this down and make it more fun and simple. There are 3 main elements to any strategic plan: #1 is YOU. You are the entity, aka the leader. #2 is the PLAN. #3 is the GOAL. So you always want to start with the goal, which in essence, is the BIG PICTURE. What is the end game that you want to achieve? Work on this for as long as it takes until you get clarity. When you are crystal clear on your expected outcome, you will be able to lead yourself and your team while sailing through the ups and downs. Once you come up with a clear big picture, then you reverse engineer it to map out the step by step master plan. Doing this will help you create a path and ensure that you always have a point of FOCUS. It is normal to encounter other enticing opportunities during your success journey. But you got to stay focused on your Big Picture. You and Your team depend on You to get to the end game. In my previous company, we grew very fast when we first started out. We were getting a lot of recognition among the trade and sales kept rolling in. One day, one of the “Big Players” within the industry approached me and proposed to partner up. They were a very well known and respected company within our region, which was California and neighboring states. The benefits seemed very attractive… Our Brand would get immediately recognized as a prestigious name, and They had more distribution centers which would allow us to increase our sales volume instantly. The draw backs were… They also carried hundreds of other brands and we’d become one of the sub-brands under their umbrella; and Their company mission was different from ours. They’ve been a successful regional distributor for several decades and were happy to stay that way. Our vision was to build an international distribution and become a reputable brand name. Although the census were equally split during my decision making process, I chose to decline the offer to follow the path that aligned with our Big Picture. Several years later, my company went international. That “Big Player” went out of business. I hope you enjoyed this video. If you did, subscribe to our channel and share with all of your friends. And, awesomeness always happens after you watch the video. So go to JoniYoung.com and leave a comment now. I’d love to hear from you. Cheers to you and Thank you so much for watching. Steve Jobs shares his amazingly different approach to marketing and how he used it to build Apple into one of the largest companies in the world. * Join my BELIEVE newsletter: http://www.evancarmichael.com/newsletter/ Transcript: To me….marketing is about values. This is a very complicated world. It’s a very noisy world. And we’re not going to get a chance to get people to remember much about us. No company is! And so, we have to be really clear on what we want them to know about us. Now Apple, fortunately, is one of half-a-dozen best brands in the whole world. Right up there with Nike, Disney, Coke, Sony — it is one of the greats of the greats. Not just in this country, but all around the globe. But even a great brand needs investment and caring if it’s going to retain its relevance and vitality. And the Apple brand has clearly suffered from neglect in this area in the last few years. And we need to bring it back! The way to do that is NOT to talk about speeds and fees. It’s NOT to talk about bits and mega-hertz. It’s NOT to talk about why we are better than Windows. The dairy industry tried for 20 years to convince you that milk was good for you. It’s a lie, but they tried anyway. And the sales were falling. And then they tried “Got milk” and the sales went up. “Got milk” wasn’t even talking about the product. In fact, it focuses on the absence of the product. But the best example of all, and one of the greatest jobs of marketing that the universe has ever seen, is Nike. Remember, Nike sells a commodity. They sell shoes!!! And yet, when you think of Nike you feel something different than a shoe company. In their ads, as you know, they don’t ever talk about the product. They don’t ever tell you about their air soles and why they are better than Reebok’s air soles. What does Nike do in their advertising? They honor great athletes. And they honor great athletics. That’s who they are, that’s what they are about! Apple spends a fortune on advertising — you’d never know it….you’d never know it! So…when I got here, Apple just fired their agency and there was a competition with 23 agencies that…you know…four years from now we would pick one. And we blew that up and we hired Chiat\Day, the ad agency that I was fortunate enough to work with years ago and created some award winning work including the commercial voted the best ad ever made, 1984 (by Advertising Professionals). And…we started working about eight weeks ago, and the question we asked was, “Our customers want to know who is Apple and what is it that we stand for…where do we fit in this world?” And what we’re about isn’t making boxes for people to get their jobs done — although we do that well. We do that better than almost anybody, in some cases. But Apple is about something more than that! Apple at the core…its core value — is that, we believe that people with passion can change the world for the better. That’s what we believe! And we have had the opportunity to work with people like that. We’ve had the opportunity to work with people like you; with software developers, with customers, who have done it. In some big, and some small ways. And we believe that, in this world, people can change it for the better. And that those people who are crazy enough to think that they can change the world are the ones that actually do! And so, what we’re going to do in our first brand marketing campaign in several years, is to get back to that core value! A lot of things have changed. The market is in a total different place than where it was a decade ago. And Apple is totally different — and Apple’s place in it is totally different. And believe me, the products, and the distribution strategy, and the manufacturing are totally different…and we understand that. But values and core values — those things shouldn’t change. The things that Apple believed in at its core, are the same things Apple really stands for today. How often have you faced issues in effectively communicating a well formulated strategy to the right stakeholders? Understanding organizations’ strategic plan by all who are involved in the execution is as important as optimally creating it. A well-orchestrated process must be in place to facilitate better understanding of the strategy and the specific roles to be played by different teams. Unless the goals are understood clearly, chances are that you end up having a big gap between intended strategy and the realized strategy. So, how do we ensure that you have the right plan and process in place for a successful communication of strategy? It is a well-known fact that majority of strategies fail, a key contributor being poorly designed and executed communication plan. One should be committing adequate resources and time to develop a sound method to overcome this. Develop your communication strategy. Developing a solid communication strategy is not easy, you improve as you learn more from the feedback you get on how well the target groups received and understood the message, as it was intended. This is a continual process and there is no such thing as achieving 100% perfection. Ensure that this two-way process is effectively managed.

Developing a Sales and Marketing Strategy Plan http://www.edwindearborn.com When developing and sales and marketing strategy/plan there are two types of sales approaches. One is the mindset of the hunter and the other is that of the farmer. The Hunter. The mindset of the hunter is to “Track, Kill & Move On.” Hunters are quick, restless and nomadic. The rapidly assess opportunities and discover rapid solutions to generate sustenance. In sales and marketing this would involve outbound phone calls, networking, and generally canvassing one’s territory for relatively immediate sales. The Farmer. The mindset and habits of a farmer is to stay in a one location, large or small, and to cultivate over a longer period of time. Farmers are very attune to the weather, the soil and many other factors, any of which could aversely affect his crops in the upcoming months or even years. When times get tough, they have a hard time moving on to new lands like the hunter. But their advantage is that they can feed hundreds of people for months and months when they do their job right and consistently. When developing a complete sales and marketing strategy plan it is important to factor in both types of personalities and tactics. One needs the hunters to find and bring home immediate sales. But it is also important that you have farmers who are tending to those who require nurturing. By doing so, future “crops” of leads will bear fruit. The Biggest Mistake The biggest mistake that any small business, start-up or corporation could make it to believe that all you need are more hunters to get in more sales. And likewise, one could pendulum swing and concentrate so much on nurturing that no immediate sales are generated, thus causing financial hardship for the enterprise. It is important to have both a Hunter and a Farmer strategy for your sales and marketing plan. Please subscribe to my YouTube channel.

Do not fall for overly complicated planning processes. All you need to do is answer these six questions. Most entrepreneurs agree that the ability to consistently execute is a key factor in surviving the start-up phase and ultimately winning. That said you could not make a pig fly, no matter how much you stick with it. In other words, a crummy plan executed well still gets you crummy results. So start with a solid strategy. A sound plan and a simple plan are not mutually exclusive. If you are going to work on a plan, your plan should work for you. Management journals, books, blogs and articles are filled with countless approaches to strategic planning. The definitions for the various components of a strategic plan can be debated endlessly: a vision versus a mission, initiatives versus tactics, and goals versus objectives. Whatever the terms you prefer, cut through the clutter by answering six simple questions about your business: Why do we exist? Where are we going? How will we conduct ourselves? What will we do? How will we measure our success? What improvements or changes must we make? Answering these questions will get you started with a solid plan you can execute. In addition, a final note of caution: Do not be deceived by the simplicity of the questions. Identify Mission and Objectives. The mission statement should include a founding principle upon which the company was created, and remains the foundation for all that the company does. Do some Environmental Scanning. Essentially, the environmental scan includes an internal evaluation of the company, an analysis of the industry (including market trends), and evaluation of the competition. This step will allow you to see how your company measures up in the marketing place, and where improvement or focus is needed. Formulate a Strategy. There are many factors to consider in the formulation of your strategy, including: competitive position in the market; marketing budget; marketing strategies; public relations strategies (if pertinent for your industry; includes goodwill activities); distribution channels; sales process; brand strategy; pricing strategy; new product rollout; etc. Implement the Strategy. Plan your work and work your plan. Strategy implementation begins with a viable action plan. Implementation of the strategy would also include: Budget creation; Policies and procedures; Organizing the company's resources; Keeping staff on task. Evaluate and control. This includes: Measurement -- what and how to measure, benchmarks, and tracking; Desired Targets -- know what specific targets you are aiming to hit; Comparison -- compare your actual results to what was predicted or anticipated in the strategy; Adjustment -- adjust your action steps as necessary to ensure that all objectives and targets are met.
