The WHO used to recommend that you get no more than 10% of your daily calories from sugar, but now they're considering lowering that to 5%. For an average, healthy adult, that would mean 25 grams, or about six teaspoons of sugar per day ( A single can of Coke has 39 grams of sugar). So what happens if you eat too much sugar? Here's a depressing rundown. 1. Cavities Trust your dentist on this one: Sugar is such an enemy to dental health that one study way back in 1967 called it the "arch criminal" behind cavities. The connection between sugar and cavities is perhaps the best established. Tooth decay occurs when the bacteria that line the teeth feed on simple sugars, creating acid that destroys enamel. 2. Insatiable hunger Leptin is a hormone that lets your body know when you've had enough to eat. In people who develop leptin resistance, this "I'm full" signal is never received, presenting a major obstacle for weight control. Some studies have raised the possibility that leptin resistance may be a side effect of obesity, not a contributing cause. A 2013 review of 68 different studies found "consistent evidence that increasing or decreasing intake of dietary sugars from current levels of intake is associated with corresponding changes in body weight in adults." Want to lose weight? Cutting your sugar intake is a good place to start. 4. Insulin resistance When you eat a lot of high-sugar meals - donuts for breakfast, anyone? - it can increase your body's demand for insulin, a hormone that helps your body convert food into usable energy. When insulin levels are consistently high, your body's sensitivity to the hormone is reduced, and glucose builds up in the blood. Symptoms of insulin resistance can include fatigue, hunger, brain fog, and high blood pressure. It's also associated with extra weight around the middle. Still, most people don't realize they are insulin resistant until it develops into full-blown diabetes - a much more serious diagnosis. 5. Diabetes One study that followed 51,603 women between 1991 and 1999 found an increased risk of diabetes among those who consumed more sugar-sweetened beverages - that's soda, sweetened ice tea, energy drinks, etc. And a massive review of previous research involving 310,819 participants supported this result, concluding that drinking lots of soda was associated not just with weight gain but with the development of type 2 diabetes. 6. Obesity Obesity is one of the most-cited risks of excess sugar consumption. Just one can of soda each day could lead to 15 pounds of weight gain in a single year, and each can of soda increases the odds of becoming obese. Sugar may well raise the risk of obesity directly, but the association could be mediated by diabetes, metabolic syndrome, or other diet and exercise habits associated with high-sugar diets. And it's possible that soda is uniquely pernicious, above and beyond other sugary foods. 7. Liver failure Because of the unique way we metabolize fructose, it creates a stress response in the liver that can exacerbate inflammation. High doses of sugar can make the liver go into overdrive. That's one reason excess fructose is a "key player" in the development of nonalcoholic fatty liver disease, where fat accumulates in the liver in the absence of alcohol abuse. 8. Pancreatic cancer A handful of studies have found that high-sugar diets are associated with a slightly elevated risk of pancreatic cancer, one of the deadliest cancers. The link may be because high-sugar diets are associated with obesity and diabetes, both of which increase the likelihood someone will develop pancreatic cancer. 9. High blood pressure Hypertension is usually associated with salty foods, not desserts - but eating lots of added sugar has indeed been linked to high blood pressure. In one study following 4,528 adults without a history of hypertension, consuming 74 or more grams of sugar each day was strongly associated with an elevated risk of high blood pressure. 10. Heart disease Heart disease may not get as much time in the spotlight as diseases like cancer and AIDS, but it is in fact the number one cause of death in our country.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention2, around 90% of sodium you get comes from salt. Sodium assists in controlling blood volume and blood pressure. The Dietary Guidelines for Americans 2010 recommends you limit salt intake to less than 2,300 milligrams/day. Fruit juices and sugary processed foods and desserts have similar effects. The combination of glycemic carbs and oil is particularly potent at stimulating fat storage hormones. Plus, like other cooked starches, fried foods contain AGEs. 3. Red and processed meats Many diabetics have come to believe that if sugar and refined grains and other high-glycemic foods raise blood sugar and triglycerides, they should avoid them and eat more animal protein to keep their blood glucose levels in check. However, several studies have now confirmed that high intake of meat increases the risk of diabetes. 4. Trans fats (margarine, shortening, fast food, processed baked goods) Diabetes accelerates cardiovascular disease; because the vast majority of diabetics (more than 80 percent) die from cardiovascular disease, any food that increases cardiovascular risk will be especially problematic for those with diabetes. Trans fat intake is a strong dietary risk factor for heart disease; even a small amount of trans fat intake increases risk. 5. Refined grains (white rice and white flour products) Refined carbohydrates like white rice, white pasta, and white bread are missing the fiber from the original grain, so they raise blood glucose higher and faster than their intact, unprocessed counterparts. In a 6-year study of 65,000 women, those with diets high in refined carbohydrates from white bread, white rice, and pasta were 2.5 times as likely to be diagnosed with type 2 diabetes compared to those who ate lower-GL foods such as intact whole grains and whole wheat bread. An analysis of four prospective studies on white rice consumption and diabetes found that each daily serving of white rice increased the risk of diabetes by 11%. Cancer Causing Foods to Avoid: Cancer is a scary word and we often overlook minor things that can be dangerous and can fetch us this deadly disease. Our diet exhibits how we are and how we will be. Thus, there are certain foods that increase the risk of cancer. So let’s have a look at these cancer promoting foods so we all know not only what to eat, but what NOT to eat (or at least reduce their intake). Number One: Excess alcohol: There is a strong scientific consensus of the link between alcohol drinking and several types of cancer. The more alcohol a person drinks regularly over time—the higher his or her risk of developing an alcohol-associated cancer. Sugar leads to heart disease in a complex way and affects the body's metabolism and the way we handle the intake of food and nutrition. So, a diet high in sugar is usually an unhealthy diet. And you want to stick with the things that are healthier, but we can make healthy choices in regards to sugar intake. If we want to satisfy that sweet tooth, we can always go with something like pure dark chocolate or unprocessed sugary foods.That would be a better way to have sugar in our diet and satisfy our sweet tooth.

Cancer is an abnormal growth of cells with the potential to invade or spread to other parts of the body. There are more than 100 types of cancer, including breast cancer, skin cancer, lung cancer, colon cancer, prostate cancer, and lymphoma. Possible signs and symptoms include a lump, abnormal bleeding, prolonged cough, unexplained weight loss and a change in bowel movements. Many cancers can be prevented by not smoking, maintaining a healthy weight, not drinking too much alcohol, eating plenty of vegetables, fruits and whole grains and by avoiding many cancer causing foods you probably eat every day. Canned Tomatoes - Canned Tomatoes are not good for your health because the cans which is used to pack tomatoes are lined with a product called bisphenol A, BPA, an endocrine disruptor that may mimic or disrupt hormones and increase the risks for breast cancer, prostate cancer, early puberty, metabolic disorders, infertility, and several other problems. Microwave popcorn - Microwave popcorn is one of the most popular snacks in many parts of the world. But there are two safety issues involving the chemicals added into many brands of microwave popcorn. The first stems from the use of diacetyl in artificial butter flavor. Diacetyl appears to damage lungs when it is repeatedly inhaled in vaporized form. The other issue is with the lining of popcorn bags. Genetically modified foods- GMOs are grown using harmful chemicals and, when consumed, can lead to immune system, brain and liver damage. After GMO’s were introduced in 1996, GM vegetables fed to rats caused development of horrifying tumors. Soda Pop - Sodas are loaded with sugar and an empty source of calories that cause weight gain and contribute to the nationwide epidemic of obesity. Drinking large amounts of this rapidly digested sugar causes your blood sugar to spike which can lead to both inflammation and insulin resistance. Hydrogenated oils - Hydrogenated oils are vegetable oils, which cannot be naturally extracted like olive oil, soy or canola oil, they are chemically extracted from vegetables and is again chemically treated to change the smell and taste. This process turns unsaturated fat into a stable solid fat, resulting in trans fatty hydrogenated oil which is considered to be the worst type of fat and is known to cause cancer, heart disease, and immune system problems. Refined sugar and artificial sweeteners - Refined sugar, artificial sweeteners and fructose-rich sweeteners like high-fructose corn syrup are detrimental for your health. These products tend to rapidly spike insulin levels and feed the growth of cancer cells. Farmed salmon - Farmed salmon is nowhere near as healthy as wild salmon, and eating farmed salmon puts you at a higher risk of developing cancer. Farm-raised fish are fed unnatural diets and contaminated with chemicals, antibiotics, pesticides and other known carcinogens found in materials like asbestos. Processed meats or red meat - Processed meats such as ham, sausage and bacon have chemicals and preservatives like sodium nitrates, which make them bad for your health. In addition, processed meat contains excessive salt, which is also not good for you. In a 2008 study published in the Nutrition and Cancer journal, researchers found that processed meat intake might be involved in the etiology of colorectal cancer. Pickled and smoked foods - Pickled and smoked foods are delicious but, at the same time, very harmful to the body. In fact, smoked meats that pick up tar from the smoking process cause extreme harm to your body. Plus, most pickled foods contain nitrates that turn into N-nitroso, which increases your risk of cancer. Alcohol - Drinking too much alcohol is not good for your health and can put you at certain types of developing cancer risks. Regularly drinking a large glass of wine a day can increase the risk of mouth, upper throat, oesophageal also known as food pipe, breast and bowel cancers. When you drink alcohol, it is converted into a toxic chemical called acetaldehyde in your body. This can damage your DNA and stop your cells from repairing that damage, which can lead to various types of cancer.

According to a research conducted in the University of Minnesota, the consumption of sugar-sweetened drinks could increase the risk of endometrial cancer in women. The research showed that women who regularly consumed these drinks faced an increased risk of developing the cancer, compared to those who consumed none. The research also helped to explain why more obese women were diagnosed with endometrial cancer. However, the intake of sugar-free drinks had no connection with the endometrial cancer risk.

Glycemic Index: The “glycemic index” is a term used to describe the blood glucose response to a particular food. The glycemic index is a method of ranking the effects of carb-based foods based on their effects on blood sugar - refers to how quickly sugar reaches the bloodstream after food consumption. High-GI foods pass rapidly through your digestive system and into your bloodstream, driving up your blood glucose levels and causing insulin to spike. Low-GI foods, on the other hand, pass more slowly through the digestive system and enter the bloodstream gradually, which keeps insulin levels low (1,2) Slow Carb: Your gut quickly absorbs high-GI carbs and spikes your blood sugar, resulting in high insulin that can increase storage of belly fat, increases inflammation, raises triglycerides and lowers HDL, raises blood pressure, lowers testosterone in men, and contributes to infertility in women. High-fiber, low-sugar carbs, are slowly digested and don’t lead to blood sugar and insulin spikes. These slow carbs reduce cancer risk and increase your body’s ability to detoxify (3) Blood Glucose and Insulin: When your blood glucose and insulin move up and down rapidly or stay high it disrupts your natural blood glucose balance. This can lead to your body having trouble responding to your blood glucose levels, which may contribute to insulin resistance. Insulin resistance is associated with many health problems - type 2 Diabetes, obesity, high blood pressure, stroke and heart disease (4) Study: A study published in August 2015 in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition analyzed data from about 70,000 postmenopausal women. They found that women who had higher dietary glycemic index intake had increased odds of developing depression within the three-year study. They also found that higher consumption of added sugars was associated with depression risk. On the other hand, women who ate more fiber, fruits, and vegetables (which often have lower glycemic indexes) were shown to have a lower chance of developing depression, per the study’s findings. Researchers suggested that the association may be due to many different mechanisms.
